It’s possible that Chris Raven is the only person in the UK making baroque flutes (长笛). But far from having a lifetime of making instruments behind him, he started out at 70, after decades working in IT. He turns 80 in a month. Yet, in childhood, he loved woodwork. As he says: “You can plant a seed in a child’s mind. And the seed stays.”
Raven grew up in a musical household, in Chelmsford, Essex. Raven played the flute until he lost interest as a teenager. But he rediscovered his love of the instrument in his 40s when he won lessons at his daughter’s school fundraiser. Twenty years ago, he founded a flute choir.
It was after his mother died that he found his old school reports in his parents’ desk. But when he read his old reports he was taken aback: “The two subjects that I did consistently well at-which nobody seemed to spot at the time-were music and woodwork.” he says. “I made stuff as a child and I was good at it.” Rather than feeling minded to look back and wonder if he might have made different career decisions, Raven’s discovery was more a case of him noticing his gift, he says.
About 10 years ago, Raven signed up for an Irish flute-making workshop, followed by a baroque flute-making workshop. He cleared out the garage of the home, and equipped it with various tools to make flutes. His childhood passion “was revived” in baroque flutes and flute boxes.
“It’s been all-consuming,” he says. He spends at least four days a week “on my own in the workshop”. “Flute making, and box making, is not a living so much as a hobby,” says Raven. “I feel real passion and more creation about a new design.”
4. How long has Raven been a flute maker?
A. For his whole life. B. Since ten years ago.
C. Since his childhood. D. For several decades.
5. How did Raven’s old school reports influence him?
A. They awoke his hidden talent. B. They led him to a wrong career.
C. They brought back old memories. D. They made him feel Mom’s love.
6. What can be inferred about Raven from the last two paragraphs?
A. He feels stuck in his career. B. He works for an Irish workshop.
C. He gets some helpers in his work. D. He unites his two passions after 70.
7. Which can be the best title for the text?
A. A Popular Flute Maker B. Raven’s Lifelong Hobbies
C. A New Start after Retirement D. Music-Raven’s Childhood Love
【答案】4. B 5. A 6. D 7. C

C
A team of researchers at the University of Cambridge have created an innovative floating device that uses solar power to transform polluted water or seawater into clean hydrogen (氢气) fuel and purified water.
This device is particularly beneficial for areas with limited resources or without access to the electricity, as it can operate with any open water source and does not rely on external power sources.
It takes its inspiration from photosynthesis, the process by which plants turn sunlight into food. However, unlike earlier versions of the “artificial leaf”, which could produce green hydrogen fuel from clean water sources, this new device operates from polluted or seawater sources and can produce clean drinking water-at the same time.
“In remote or developing regions, where clean water is relatively scarce and the basic facilities necessary for water purification are not readily available, water splitting (分解) is extremely difficult,” said Ariffin Mohamad Annuar, a member of the research team. “The device that could work using polluted water could solve two problems at once: it could split water to make clean fuel, and it could make clean drinking water.”
The device that can make clean fuel and clean water at once using solar power alone could help address the energy and the water crises facing so many parts of the world. For example, the indoor air pollution caused by cooking with “dirty” fuels, such as kerosene, is responsible for more than three million deaths annually, according to the World Health Organization. Cooking with green hydrogen instead could help reduce that number significantly.
“It’s such a simple design as well: in just a few steps, we can build a device that works well on water from a wide variety of sources,” said Ariffin Mohamad Annuar. “In addition, the new device uses more of the sun’s energy. The light-driven process for making solar fuels only uses a small portion of the solar spectrum (光谱) — there’s a whole lot of the spectrum that goes unused.”
8. What do we know about the new device?
A. It can hardly produce clean hydrogen fuel.
B It needs a lot of power to function properly.
C. It is not as convenient as the “artificial leaf”.
D. It can turn polluted water into purified water.
9. What does the underlined word “scarce” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. Insufficient. B. Cheap. C. Available. D. Useless.
10. Which word can best describe the new device?
A. Costly. B. Environmentally-friendly.
C. Outdated. D. Complex.
11. Why does the author mention the example in paragraph 5?
A. To stress the harm of air pollution to human beings.
B. To predict how many people will buy the new device.
C. To show the potential impact of the new device on the world.
D. To explain the skills of selling the new device to the poor people.
【答案】8. D 9. A 10. B 11. C

【8题详解】
细节理解题。根据第一段“A team of researchers at the University of Cambridge have created an innovative floating device that uses solar power to transform polluted water or seawater into clean hydrogen (氢气) fuel and purified water.(剑桥大学的一组研究人员发明了一种创新的浮动装置,该装置利用太阳能将受污染的水或海水转化为清洁的氢燃料和纯净水)”可知,这个新装置可以把污染的水变成纯净水。故选D。
【9题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第四段第一句中的“and the basic facilities necessary for water purification are not readily available, water splitting (分解) is extremely difficult(而且水净化所必需的基本设施并不容易获得,水的分解非常困难)”可知,此处是指干净的水相对稀缺,所以scarce意为“稀缺的”。故选A。
【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据第五段“The device that can make clean fuel and clean water at once using solar power alone could help address the energy and the water crises facing so many parts of the world. For example, the indoor air pollution caused by cooking with “dirty” fuels, such as kerosene, is responsible for more than three million deaths annually, according to the World Health Organization. Cooking with green hydrogen instead could help reduce that number significantly.(该装置可以利用太阳能同时制造清洁燃料和清洁水,可以帮助解决世界许多地区面临的能源和水危机。例如,根据世界卫生组织的数据,用煤油等“肮脏”燃料做饭造成的室内空气污染,每年造成300多万人死亡。用绿色氢烹饪可以帮助显著减少这一数字)”可推知,这款新装置是环境友好型的。故选B。
【11题详解】
推理判断题。根据第五段第一句“The device that can make clean fuel and clean water at once using solar power alone could help address the energy and the water crises facing so many parts of the world.(该装置可以利用太阳能同时制造清洁燃料和清洁水,可以帮助解决世界许多地区面临的能源和水危机)”可推知,作者在第5段提到这个例子是为了展示新设备对世界的潜在影响。故选C。

Artists everywhere are getting “understandably nervous” about recent advances in artificial intelligence. Last month, a winner of an art prize at the Colorado State Fair “sparked a violent protest” when he posted the news and explained that he’d created his image using an AI program. Critics quickly accused 39-year-old Lance Allen of cheating. To be fair, Allen had won in the digital art category and made no secret of how the image had been produced. But the rules of art making are clearly changing.
Allen’s creative process, to be clear, “was not a push-button operation, ”said Jason Blain in Forbes. He claims to have spent 80 hours on his entry, first on fine-tuning his text prompts (提示), then by touching up the final image using Photoshop and similar tools, then arranging to print the image on canvas. He made the finished product using AI much as a photographer creates an image using a camera.
But Allen, a tabletop game developer, is awed by AI’s capabilities and urges artists and illustrators to welcome the technology rather than fight it. “Art is dead,” he says. “AI won. Humans lost.” A more inspiring lesson to take from his victory, though, is that image generators are likely to “expand the appreciation for and creation of art” by opening the field to people, like him, who could never draw anything as detailed as his award-winning image. “If anything, we will have more artists,” and as the technology progresses, “we might see the emergence of art styles that none have seen before.”
You can’t blame traditional artists if they’re unhappy. Image generators work their magic, after all, by analyzing the aesthetics (美学) of millions of pre-existing images. One of the most complicated image generators “makes crystal clear just how destructive this technology will be,” said Loz Eliot in New Atlas. Given a specific prompt, it can produce an image of just about anything you can imagine and even follow the style of a favorite artist’s work. Its arrival marks “an incredible popularization of visual creativity” while aiming “a knife to the heart of anyone who’s spent decades improving their artistic techniques hoping to make a living from them.”
12. Why are artists getting nervous about AI recently?
A. A winner of an art prize used AI. B. Lance Allen cheated in the art competition.
C. The digital art will soon dominate. D. There will be great changes in art creation.
13. What does the author intend to tell us in paragraph 2?
A. It was no easy work for Allen even with Al. B. Allen worked as a photographer creating an image.
C. AI played a key role in Allen’s art creation. D. Although with AI, Allen’s creation counted a lot.
14. What lesson can we draw from Allen’s winning?
A. Human has been beaten by AI. B. AI will make art more popular.
C. Greater artists and new art styles will appear. D. AI enables amateurs to win art competitions.
15. Why does Loz Eliot say the new technology will be destructive?
A. It works by analyzing images created by human.
B. It can produce images beyond people’s imagination.
C. It makes artists’ long-time effort meaningless.
D. It makes it impossible for artists to make a living.
【答案】12. D 13. A 14. B 15. C

细节理解题。根据文章第一段“Artists everywhere are getting “understandably nervous” about recent advances in artificial intelligence. Last month, a winner of an art prize at the Colorado State Fair “sparked a violent protest” when he posted the news and explained that he’d created his image using an AI program. 【13题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第二段“Allen’s creative process, to be clear, “was not a push-button operation, ”said Jason Blain in Forbes. He claims to have spent 80 hours on his entry (Jason Blain在《福布斯》上提到,Allen的创作过程并不是一个按钮式的操作。他声称自己花了80个小时在参赛作品上)”可知,这一段主要介绍Allen的AI创作不是一个按钮就解决的,而是通过80个小时的精心制作而成的,故选A。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章倒数第二段“A more inspiring lesson to take from his victory, though, is that image generators are likely to “expand the appreciation for and creation of art” by opening the field to people, like him, who could never draw anything as detailed as his award-winning image. “If anything, we will have more artists,” and as the technology progresses, “we might see the emergence of art styles that none have seen before.”(从他的胜利中我们可以学到一个鼓舞人心的教训,图像生成器可能会“扩大对艺术的欣赏和创作”,向像他这种无法绘制出他获奖图像那样详细的东西的人开放这一领域。“如果有什么不同的话,那就是我们会有更多的艺术家”,随着技术的进步,“我们可能会看到前所未有的艺术风格的出现。”)”可知,从Allen获奖我们可以得出的教训就是,这会让艺术向更多的人开放,并出现前所未有的艺术风格,故这都能让艺术变得更加流行,普遍,故选B。
【15题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章最后一段“One of the most complicated image generators “makes crystal clear just how destructive this technology will be,” said Loz Eliot in New Atlas. Given a specific prompt, it can produce an image of just about anything you can imagine and even follow the style of a favorite artist’s work. Its arrival marks “an incredible popularization of visual creativity” while aiming “a knife to the heart of anyone who’s spent decades improving their artistic techniques hoping to make a living from them.”(Loz Eliot在《新地图集》中国说道,最复杂的图像生成器之一“清楚地表明了这项技术的破坏性”。
The philosophy that can help you keep your home organized
How can we clean up our space and keep it that way? That’s a question that Star Hansen thinks a lot about. She’s a professional organizer who teaches classes on home organizing. She believes that keeping your home neat and tidy is a continual process. ____16____. Here are her tidying philosophy strategies to clean up your messes.
Understand your chaos
Hansen says everyone’s chaos tells a personal story. What becomes chaos and where your chaos build up can say a lot about what’s going on with you. If you have unwanted piles of stuff around your house, ask yourself: What’s making it hard to throw them away? For example, a uniform that hasn’t fit for years. ____17____. When you understand the reasons behind your chaos, it’s a lot easier to know what to keep and what to throw away.
Start small
When it comes to organizing, don’t bite off more than you can chew. If you start with too big a goal, you might get discouraged if the job takes too long. So don’t try to clean your entire garage in one afternoon. ____18____. For example, you can tidy your cupboard first and save more complicated items, like your garage, for last. Setting realistic goals can help keep you invested in the process.
____19____
It’s easy to be organized the day after tidying. But what happens when you come home from a trip and are too tired to unpack your luggage? Or when you get the flu and are too sick to clean up? The key to staying organized is to create practices that can be easily maintained. Make a system that works for you even when you’ve got a cold. For example, label storage containers on all four sides so they’re easier to spot. ____20____ .
A. Make it easy to stay organized
B Abandon the fancy storage boxes
C. Instead, start with something less challenging
D. Maybe it reveals a longing for your former profession
E. That attitude can help you let go of things you don’t need
F. You have to take the time to create systems that work for you
G. Make sure your most used items are always the easiest to reach
【答案】16. E 17. D 18. C 19. A 20. G

It was a sunny Friday afternoon. My assignment was to record the 400-meter race in the sports meet. All the students in our class were sitting anxiously except one, a tall handsome boy named Tommy who was considered the one most likely to win the race. Even, unlike other competitors, he was quite relaxed, standing beside the track and stretching himself.
“Tommy! I bet you’ll win.” I yelled at him. “Just wait and see!” A big smile spread across his face.
“May I have your attention, please? All the athletes are requested to proceed to the registration office.” A gentle voice caught our attention.
“Tommy, your show time!” I shouted and gave him a thumb-up.
Then, I saw all the athletes went to register, preparing for the game. Soon they were all on the starting line. Taking the best recording location, I raised my smartphone, ready to shoot.
With the loud sound of the starting gun, all the competitors threw themselves forwards from the starting line like arrows. Tommy quickly took the lead with his excellent explosive power from long-term training. But there was one problem for me-I had to spare every effort to control my excitement in order to keep my shooting picture stable.
“Come on, Tommy!” Still, I could hear the cheers of our classmates higher and higher. It seemed that Tommy had heard the powerful shouts and became full of strength. He kept adjusting his breath, maintaining a steady rhythm, and approaching the finish line step by step.
Finally, with the cheers of the audience, Tommy crossed the finish line almost at the same time with the second-place finisher. How I wish I could rush to him and give him a big bear hug! But I could not. I had to finish recording the whole race, so I waited until the last competitor crossed the finish line. Suddenly, I noticed there was an unusual noise from the crowd.

【答案】范文
Tommy was ranked second on the scoreboard. Feeling puzzled, Tommy immediately found the judge and pointed out this mistake politely. However, the second-place finisher insisted he was the winner. No one could tell exactly what had happened. Tommy was at a loss what to do, feeling frustrated. Then it suddenly occurred to me that I had recorded the whole process. Rushing to the judge, I showed him the video, which clarified the fact that it was Tommy who first arrived.
The judge admitted the error and announced Tommy was the real champion. After learning the truth, the audience broke into thunderous applause. Tommy shouldered his way through the crowd, gate ring me in his arms with a proud smile on his face. We both knew this was not just a victory of a race, but also a victory of sticking to the truth and daring to fight for it in the face of injustice.

C Since his childhood. D. For several decades.
5. How did Raven’s old school reports influence him?

B. It needs a lot of power to function properly.
D
12 Why are artists getting nervous about AI recently?

B. Abandon the fancy storage boxes
C. Instead, start with something less challenging
D. Maybe it reveals a longing for your former profession
E. That attitude can help you let go of things you don’t need
F. You have to take the time to create systems that work for you
G. Make sure your most used items are always the easiest to reach

注意:
1. 续写词数应为 150 左右:
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
