By law, employers (雇主) and people in charge of business and other buildings must take steps to reduce the risks caused by fire. A fire safety policy is a simple way to make sure that you have all of this information recorded in one place. B For decades, parents and teachers have always encouraged children across ages to read books by international authors like Enid Blyton and J. K Rowling. Gwen Lee, Singaporean-born, US-based author of eight children’s books always felt something was missing. “I grew up wondering why I never saw my own life in books,” she said. Instead of cakes and tea, Lee wanted stories with tropical (热带的) storms and coffee! In 2015 she published (出版) Jack and Jill at Bukit Timah Hill, her first children’s book with a Singaporean background. There are many gifted Singaporean authors like Gwen Lee. Adan Jimenez and Felicia Low-Jimenez co-authored Sherlock Sam, a story about the Singapore’s greatest kid detective (侦探).Ruth Wan-Lau’s Timmy and Tammy series follow two Singaporean children as they explore the country’s landmarks such as Changi Airport, the Mass Rapid Transits (MRT). “Research has shown that stories related to traditional culture help kids read better. For example, Elven and The Puzzle Box was set in a made-up country near Singapore and Malaysia. When my readers in Asia discuss its themes, they connect these to their own backgrounds and family histories,” says Lee. Dr. Rudine Sims Bishop, an expert on children’s books, describes books as “windows” into others’ world and “mirrors” reflecting our own lives. In Singapore, schools encourage local literature, though bookstores still consider Western books first, narrowing space for Asian books. Singapore’s National Arts Council (NAC) encourages authors through writing competitions where local writers can gain recognition and publishing deals. In fact, Lee got her start through NAC’s Beyond Words contest. “Winning that contest allowed me to published my first children’s picture book, Little Cloud Wants Snow,” Lee shares. The Singapore Book Council, together with local publishers, bookstores and writers, is promoting Singaporean literature through Go Local—Read our World movement. This movement attracts readers through activities like book readings, stage plays based on titles and many more programs. 4. Various competitions in Singapore. B. Singapore’s efforts to popularize local literature. C. The rise of Singaporean children’s literature. D. Award-winning Singaporean children’s books. C A non-profit group in Greece uses mini horses to provide pet treatment to sick and disabled (残疾的) people. The animals are brought to hospitals and care centers to give joy to the sick or those suffering physical limits (限制). The horses are raised as tiny animals and stand about 72 centimeters tall. They are specially trained to provide comfort to disabled children, sick people, or older adults. The horses must complete at least two years of training. They are taught how to work in limited environments with children and adults with special health needs. Caregivers say the horses provide a form of pet treatment that offers valuable social interactions and new learning experiences. But the leader of the Greek organization says her group has been struggling with money difficulty in recent years. The organization is run by 68-year-old Mina Karagianni. She now performs most of the group's duties herself. Karagianni also provides money for the group and cares for the nine tiny horses, mostly by herself. Karagianni learned about the Florida-based organization over the Internet while she was searching for information on a short horse she had rescued. After learning about its activities, she got the idea to start her own operation. “I was touched and said, ‘OK, we have to bring this to Greece,’” Karagianni said. So, she decided to make changes to her land to be able to care for the horses. She said she turned her land into what she called a “Magic Garden.” She has everything that is needed to care for the horses. She also runs a small restaurant and party area. Karagianni created her Greek group in 2014. She said the organization has served about12,000 children. Karagianni said she had contacted businesses and charities (慈善机构) about money help but has not been successful. She plans to continue to seek help. She added she would keep going because she saw the great benefits the children and adults receive from the animals. 8. What is the problem with the Greek organization? A. It is short of money. B. It is in need of mini horses. C. It has limited areas to train horses. D. It has little attraction for patients. 9. What inspired Karagianni to start the organization? A. An organization's activities. B. A rescued short horse. C. Her dream of keeping horses. D. Her hope of making full use of her land. 10. What has Karagianni done for her organization? A. She has spread the benefits of mini horses. B. She has tried her best to get support. C. She has opened a restaurant for children. D. She has changed her land into a party area. 11. Which of the following can be the best title for the text? A. Animals Live Peacefully with Humans B. Charities Need Strong Support from Society C. Hospitals Use Animals for Extra Treatment D. Mini Horses Bring Joy to the Sick and Disabled D Assistive (辅助的) technology contains special equipment and computer software that is meant to help people with disabilities. The latest assistive technology is being powered by artificial intelligence (AI), which might help many students who have difficulty in speaking, reading, writing, and working with language. Although many schools are struggling with how and where to use AI, some are welcoming AI applications for students with disabilities. However, there is concern about how to make sure that students using assistive technology are still learning. Students can use AI to organize thoughts into an outline (概要), summarize challenging reading materials, or even translate the works of William Shakespeare into today’s English. A computer can read materials aloud for students who have sight and reading problems. More and more, those voices produced by machine sound closer to human voices. Ben Snyder is a 14-year-old freshman from Larchmont, New York, who was recently told he has a learning disability. Since then, he has been using AI to help with homework. He sometimes uses AI to explain math problems. He likes a program called Question AI. One day, he asked the program to help him write an outline for a book report. He finished the work in 15 minutes. Usually, it would take him an hour and a half to create the same outline. But he said he would not use AI to write the report. “That’ s just fraudulent,” Ben said. Paul Sanft is the director of a Minnesota-based center and in it families can use assistive technology tools and borrow devices (设备). He knows some people will use the technology to do the work they should be doing by themselves. “That’s always going to happen,” Sanft said. “But I don’ t think that’ s the biggest concern for people with disabilities, who are just trying to do something that they couldn’t do before.” 12. Why do people worry about using assistive technology? A. It may leave teaching useless. B. It may discourage students. C. It may make students lazy. D. It may bring trouble to teachers. 13. What do we know about Ben Snyder? A. He is against the use of AI. B. He uses AI in his studies wisely. C. He depends on AI to read books. D. He mainly uses AI to write outlines. 14. What does the underlined word “fraudulent” in paragraph 6 mean? A. Cheating. B. Stressful. C. Exciting. D. Convenient. 15. What does Sanft think of assistive technology? A. It is harmful though easy to use. B. It is suitable for specific groups. C. It is challenging for the disabled. D. It should be kept away from students. As the new year begins, some people see an opportunity for change and improvement. I had to prepare some necessities for daily use in advance. The store is three miles from my house. Right when I was about to turn on the road, my car said overheating, my engine locked up and the car shut off. My husband and I got out of the car, trying to push the car into a nearby repair shop. But it was too hard for us to push the car. At first three different people asked us if we were okay and when we said no, they just drove off. It was like they just wanted to know if we needed help but not actually help. Finally, a man calling himself David stopped his car and helped us push our car into the nearby repair shop. And then he asked if we were going to the store because he had to go into the store and at least inside we could get warm. We agreed, because we were going to the store, and so he took us to the store. When we got inside the store, I realized this man was walking with a stick but it didn’t stop him from offering to help strangers, like us, trying to push a car through snow. We were so moved by his kind act that we helped him with his shopping, considering that he was disabled. We also bought what we needed. After that, we went to the checkouts together, and I paid the bill for David. He was very thankful. David knew that our car broke down and that we couldn’t drive, so he offered to drive us home. Soon, we arrived at our house. We thanked David again. Then he drove away. When I wanted to check the bill, I realized I had left my wallet in David’s car. _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ The next morning, I heard a knock on our door. _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 2024—2025学年(下)安徽高一3月调研考试 英语 考生注意: 1. How much is the shirt? The photo captures a moment when a runner from our class crossed the finish line first in the 1000-meter race, with his face showing extreme joy and pride. His classmates are cheering for him. I chose this photo because it vividly shows the spirit of perseverance and teamwork in our school sports meeting. It also reflects the beautiful campus scenery in spring. I believe it can inspire more students to participate in campus activities. One possible version: When I wanted to check the bill, I realized I had left my wallet in David’s car. I burst into tears at the thought of so many important documents in my wallet. Worse still, I didn’t have David’s contact information. My husband and children were also very worried, and they suggested that I turn to the Internet for help. But I didn’t think it was going to work. I thought the only solution was to re-apply for various documents, such as bank cards, ID cards and so on. But I wanted to wait. I was hoping for a wonder. The next morning, I heard a knock on our door. I hurried to open the door. To my great joy, there stood David, with my wallet in his hand. When he handed it to me, tears welled up in my eyes. I invited him in. He explained that when he got home, he found my wallet. He didn’t have my phone number, so he came to send it to me in person. I treated him to a big meal and we have become good friends ever since. That day, I realized there are always people who decide to help someone out, just like David did for us.
