Reading is always a popular indoor activity to do by the fire on a cool autumn day. Here're a few options of good reads for you to choose from. Whale Day By Billy Collins Collins has a very special style of writing that is often regarded as funny and light, which makes it easy to get into and keep reading. This book is his most recent collection of poems that is meant to take readers on a journey that will force them to use their imagination. The themes of life and death are threaded throughout the novel, and Collins hopes readers can enjoy the fantastic nature of the poems. The Book of Two Ways By Jodi Picoult Picoult is a New York Times bestselling author, and her most recent novel has been reviewed as the perfect read to enjoy while drinking your morning coffee. The story follows Dawn Edelstein who's in the middle of a flight when she has to prepare for a crash landing. She ends up surviving the crash only to realize that when her life flashes before her eyes she isn't nearly as satisfied with what she's done so far, so she makes some major changes and aims to find the man she fell in love with 15years ago. The Thursday Murder Club By Richard Osman Now that it's October and spooky(阴森森的)season is officially here, it's time to break out some horror stories. This novel is the first by author Richard Osmand and tells the story of four friends in a retirement village who meet up weekly to talk about unsolved crimes. As the story develops, the group of friends notice more local crimes are taking place, and it's up to the Thursday Murder Club to solve the cases. The Little Ghost Who Was a Quilt By Riel Nason This book is perfect for younger children who love Halloween. There are ghosts but not scary at all, with a bit of light and fun. This novel follows a little ghost who stands out when compared to his ghost friends. All of his other friends have classic white sheets to disguise themselves while the little ghost is left with a quilt, making it hard to fly as fast as the others. B Catherine Sevcenko spends her spare time taking in and rescuing injured birds in Alexandria. And there’s something constant in the past 12 years: Each crow (乌鸦) that appears at her door is covered in shiny black feathers. Sevcenko could hardly believe it when a rare crow she named Hope showed up last month. “I’d never seen a white crow before,” said Sevcenko, who runs Diva Crows rehab center with the goal of freeing the birds back into the wild. The Wildlife Rescue League of Falls Church, Va., contacted Sevcenko and asked if she could take in a rare white crow that had been brought in by a man last month. The man had rescued the bird in Manassas, Va. after he saw a group of adult crows attack the rare bird. The juvenile crow hadn’t developed enough strength in her wings to fly away. The bird was only a few months old and was a little underweight, but didn’t appear to have any injuries. “I told them, ‘Of course, I’ll take the bird,’” said Sevcenko, who has spent her spare time helping birds in need since 2012. With help from volunteers, she estimates that Diva Crows has rescued more than 2,000 birds. In 2023, Sevcenko took in a two-foot-tall bird that had been shot with a gun. Although the bird could no longer fly and couldn’t be freed to the wild after he had been cured, she found a home for him at the Cayuga Nature Center in Ithaca, N.Y. Sevcenko and her volunteers briefly put Hope in a cage with some rescued young black crows and there weren’t any issues. Then they put Hope in with an adult crow. Things did not go well. Everyone who spends time with Hope is delighted by her personality. “She loves bird baths, and when I change her cage, she’ll sit on top and talk to me like she’s a little person,” Tijona Owens, a Diva Crows volunteer, says. “She’s a very interesting bird. She loves exploring, and she’ll stay on your arm. She enjoys hanging out in the center to see what’s going on.” 4. How did Sevcenko feel when she first saw Hope? A. Disappointed. B. Moved. C. Surprised. D. Stressed. 5. What does the underlined word “juvenile” in paragraph 3 mean? A. Black. B. Big. C. Injured. D. Young. 6. What does the author want to show by mentioning the two-foot-tall bird? A. How Sevcenko became a volunteer. B. What Sevcenko did for bird protection. C. The process of saving wounded birds. D. The problem of finding a home for birds. 7. What does Tijona say about Hope? A. She is comfortable with her. B. She likes to talk with little kids. C. She will be sent to the wild soon. D. She gets on well with adult crows. C This year marks the 50th anniversary (周年纪念) of the Rubik’s Cube (魔方). More than 450million have been sold since its invention, making it one of the bestselling toys in history. The Rubik’s Cube was named Toy of the Year in 1980 and was selected into the National Toy Hall of Fame in 2014. Beyond Rubik’s Cube, a traveling exhibit that was held on the toy’s 40th anniversary in 2014, traveled internationally for seven years. The “Rubik” in Rubik’s Cube is Hungarian professor of architecture Erno Rubik, who first created his puzzle to teach his students concepts of three-dimensional (三维的) movement. Rubik called it the Magic Cube. After it became popular around campus, Rubik decided to apply for a patent (专利). After the cube was released in the United States, books on how to solve it soon followed. In 1981, You Can Do the Cube, written by 13-year-old Patrick Bossert, sold more than 750,000 copies in short order, making him the youngest author to hit the New York Times bestseller list. For some, simply solving the Rubik’s Cube isn’t enough. “Speedcubers” race to solve it as quickly as possible. More than 200,000 people have participated in competitions permitted by the World Cubing Association, the governing body that establishes rules and maintains official records. Solvers at these events race under a variety of limitations, such as using only one hand or even being blindfolded. The first cubing world championship was hosted in Rubik’s native Budapest in 1982. The fastest solving time then was 22.95 seconds, held by Vietnamese American Minh Thai. But since then, the record has been broken many times, most recently in 2023 by Max Park, who solved it in just 3.13 seconds! Quite the pop culture icon, the Rubik’s Cube has made many cameos in films and TV shows including Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and The Big Bang Theory. It’s also part of the permanent collection at New York’s Museum of Modern Art and has been the subject of numerous exhibitions. 8 When was the Rubik’s Cube invented? A. In 2014. B. In 1982. C. In 1980. D. In 1974. 9. Why did Erno Rubik invent the Rubik’s Cube? A As a teaching tool. B. For a birthday gift. C. To make more money. D. To become a toy producer. 10. What can be learnt from paragraph 3? A. People preferred books to newspapers. B. The Rubik’s Cube was widely welcomed. C. Patrick Bossert was the youngest professor. D. There were many famous writers in the 1980s. 11. What is the best title for the text? A. Advances in the Toy Industry B. Erno Rubik: A Creative Teacher C. The Most Influential Rubik’s Cube Competitions D. The Rubik’s Cube: the Past and the Development D Mothers often say that pregnancy (怀孕) is a time unlike any other — both the body and the brain change in new and sometimes scary ways. And a new study has tried to find out exactly how much of a change women’s brains experience during pregnancy and the early stages of motherhood. According to an international research team, 94% of pregnant people’s gray matter experiences a reduction in volume of up to 5%. “Pregnancy transforms the brain,” the study’s senior author Oscar Vilarroya said. Gray matter is found throughout our central nervous system, which is in the brain and in the spinal cord (脊髓). The Cleveland Clinic says gray matter plays a significant role in all aspects of human functioning, adding that it is essential for controlling movement, memory and emotions. To explore the changes in gray matter during pregnancy, the researchers looked at 127 first-time mothers in Spain. They were tracked from before they became pregnant to six months after giving birth, and had five MRI scans to look at their brain structure at different stages of pregnancy and motherhood. Their hormone (激素) levels were also measured, and they completed questionnaires about their wellbeing. The study found that gray matter volume changes in a U-shaped pattern. So volumes decreased by 2.7% during the second three-month period of pregnancy, and 5% just before birth, but began to increase again in the six months after giving birth. Variations in hormone levels were identified as the likely cause for the changes in gray matter. The recovery in gray matter volume after giving birth was associated with greater mother-baby attachment, Vilarroya said, although the volume didn’t recover to pre-pregnancy level. This recovery along with the level of attachment to the baby is also influenced by the state of the mother’s mental health, the study found. The researchers said that understanding more about the way women’s brains change during pregnancy is crucial, because it allows experts to better support new mothers. 12. What can be concluded about gray matter from the text? A. It only exists in the brain. B. Its volume is fixed in our body. C. It is important for human functions. D. Its main role is to adjust hormone levels. 13. How did the researchers conduct the study? A. By tracking women at different stages. B. By analyzing questionnaires from fathers. C. By observing the color of the babies’ eyes. D. By testing pregnant women and their babies. 14. After giving birth, the gray matter of new mothers ________. A. continues to reduce B. starts to increase C. remains the same as at birth D. returns to pre-pregnancy volume 15. What might happen if a new mother has poor mental health? A. Her baby may get sick easily. B. Her memory may suffer a sharp decrease. C. Her attachment to the baby may be weak. D. Her hormone levels will rise quickly. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2. 5分,满分12. 5分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 How to Overcome Procrastination (拖延) Procrastination, which is when you put off tasks that you should be focusing on, can stop even the most promising career in its tracks. All I wanted growing up was to fit in. So I wore a wig (假发). However, my classmates still found out my secret. They made fun of me, saying, “Lindsay has no hair.” Sports became my escape, and I was fortunate to have inborn athletic ability. I would race home every day and play basketball in my backyard for hours. I never thought about my bald (光秃的) head during these moments, but rather who I wanted to become and what I wanted to achieve. I started to gain recognition from others. I became known as the girl who was good at basketball, not just as the girl who didn’t have hair. I was still laughed at by some classmates, but it began to bother me less. I put all my time and energy into basketball and becoming the best player I could be. I had a great high-school career, breaking countless school records, and received a scholarship to play in college. It was a dream come true. However, I still wasn’t okay with my alopecia and rarely talked about it. I continued to wear my wig all the time, no matter the weather or what I was doing. It was my security and way to hide from the world. College is a huge transition. I remember the first time when I built up the courage to tell an amazing friend in college about my alopecia. She was called Jennifer, who was good at running. When I told her about my alopecia, she comforted me that even without hair, I was a great girl. It was the first time that I had felt accepted by a person of my age. After that, we supported each other and often ran together. She offered me some advice on running. With her guidance and help, I wanted to realize my dream of running marathons. I trained hard and made great progress. Jennifer advised me to run my first marathon without a wig. I wanted to do this but I was hesitant. 注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右; 2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 Two weeks later I started my first marathon. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ When the crowd saw two bald girls competing, they screamed(尖叫)in surprise. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 洛阳强基联盟高二3月联考 英语 考生注意: 1. 1. On the day of the competition, I saw Jennifer wearing a hat. When I approached her, I found that she had already shaved off her hair. I was surprised and moved. I knew she was encouraging me in this way. I hugged her, with tears welling up in my eyes. At the beginning of the competition, she took off her hat and I took off my wig. We smiled at each other and ran towards the finish line. When the crowd saw two bald girls competing, they screamed(尖叫)in surprise. We ignored the voices of others and just strove to run forward. As I crossed the finish line, I threw myself at Jennifer to express my gratitude. “You did it!” she congratulated me. Meanwhile, the audience at the finish line gave us warm applause.
