Unit 2 Out of this world 【单元话题词汇】 Period Ⅰ Welcome to the unit & Reading—Comprehending Life on a space station Living in space is every would-be astronaut①'s dream. My six-month stay on a space station has come to an end②, and it has been a challenging③ but magical④ adventure⑤.I bet you'd love to know what daily life is like up in space and how it differs from⑥ that on the Earth—the low gravity⑦ definitely⑧ makes ordinary things strange! 该句为复合句。 you'd love to know... ①astronaut /'æstrənɔːt/n.宇航员,航天员 ②come to an end 结束 bring/put...to an end/put an end to... The strangeness⑨ of living in space is apparent⑩ from the moment we sleep.Due to⑪ the near absence⑫ of gravity in space, we have to attach⑬ ourselves so that we don't float⑭ around.We usually sleep in private quarters, which are more like large cupboards⑮,or in sleeping bags attached to the walls or the ceiling⑯. It's strange that we try to sleep with no pressure⑰ against our back, but the unusual beds don't bother⑱ us any more.After about eight hours of sleep, we start our day of work. which在句中引导非限制性定语从句,attached to the walls or the ceiling为过去分词短语作定语。 ⑨strangeness n. 显然地 ⑪due to 由于;因为 ⑫absence /'æbsəns/n. The routine tasks that occupy⑲ most of the day are demanding⑳, but they can also be extremely rewarding㉑. Our main mission㉒ is to conduct㉓ scientific research. We need to evaluate㉔ the effects of low gravity on animals and plants.Creatures㉕ such as mice, fish and mosquitoes㉖ have also been sent to the station! In a low-gravity environment, we can learn more about changes in cells and microorganisms under the microscope㉗.As well as㉘ doing these biological experiments, we carry out㉙ experiments in other research fields. I have been working on㉚ one experiment which locates and tracks lightning over large regions of the Earth. Hopefully, it will cast new light on㉛ the Earth's climate and lead to㉜ better lightning protection. With so much going on, the space station needs a lot of maintenance㉝, so we constantly check support systems and do some cleaning. 该句为复合句。 The most challenging work takes place㉞ when we need to perform㉟ tasks outside the space station, such as testing new equipment㊱, monitoring㊲ scientific experiments or repairing the space station. In the circumstances㊳, it's time for a spacewalk.First, we put on our spacesuits, which allow us to breathe in space and protect us from㊴ exposure㊵ to the cold and radiation㊶. 10 Then we head out, and sometimes perform tasks for hours at a time, with the beautiful Earth visible㊷ below.Splendid as the view of the Earth is, spacewalking is not as exciting as you might think. 11 It's probably the most dangerous work, with potential㊸ risks such as electric shocks. That's why every spacewalk is carefully planned. In view of㊹ the low-gravity environment, eating is also different in space. Most food is dried or freeze-dried.It's a luxury㊺ to eat fresh food, because fresh produce such as fruit and vegetables can only be delivered㊻ to the space station from the Earth every couple of months. 13 Salt and pepper are only in liquid form, so that they will not float away and block the air pipes. 14 However, liquids can't be easily controlled㊼ in space. We must drink water or any other liquids out of a bag through a thin tube㊽ of plastic.Furthermore㊾, to keep our body healthy, we must ensure㊿ a balanced 51 supply 52 of nutrients by taking pills 53. it为形式主语,to eat fresh food为不定式作真正的主语,because引导原因状语从句。 ㊹in view of鉴于;考虑到 ㊺luxury n. Spending some time in the gym is of vital 54 importance to astronauts' health.Did you know that in just five months, astronauts could lose a significant amount of muscle and bone mass?Considering 55 these negative effects low gravity has on the human body, we discipline 56 ourselves to do at least 57 two hours of exercise every day.15 Exercise in space is not your average workout. We have to be tied onto specially designed 58 exercise equipment to stop ourselves from 59 floating around. low gravity has on the human body为省略了关系代词that或which的定语从句。 54 vital /'vaItl/adj. 极重要的;维持生命所必需的 be of vital importance至关重要(=be very important) 55 considering prep. During our leisure 60 time, there's nothing we like more than to sit back with the rest of the crew 61 and watch our remarkable 62 planet go by 63 ,taking pictures 64 for our family and friends back home. 16 As the space station travels at a speed of 65 about 17,500 miles per hour,we get to see the sunrise every 90 minutes. 17 In these precious 66 moments, all the challenges of life in space seem worth 67 it. 16该句为复合句。we like为定语从句,taking pictures for our family and friends back home为现在分词短语作伴随状语。 60 leisure /'leʒə(r)/n. 谈论 remark on 就…… The researchers at Nanjing University showed that the lunar sample brought back by China's Chang'e-5 contains active compounds (化合物) that can change carbon dioxide into oxygen and fuel.Initially, they hoped to design a system that took advantage of lunar soil and solar radiation, the two rich resources on the moon, according to a study published on Thursday in the journal Joule. After analyzing the Chang'e-5's lunar soil, the team found the sample contained metal-rich substances, which could work as a catalyst (催化剂) to make oxygen using sunlight and carbon dioxide. The team proposed a strategy using lunar soil to electrolyze water from the moon and the astronauts' life support system into oxygen and hydrogen. The process was powered by sunlight. The carbon dioxide breathed out by moon inhabitants can be collected and combined with hydrogen to produce the fuel, also catalyzed by the lunar soil, according to the study. The researchers said with this method, no external energy apart from sunlight would be used to produce oxygen and fuel to support life on a moon base. “We use the environmental resources to minimize rocket payload, and our strategy provides a scenario for a sustainable and affordable living environment for life out of the Earth,” said the paper's first author Yao Yingfang from Nanjing University, expressing his assumption. “The challenge lies in the fact that catalytic efficiency of lunar soil is lower than catalysts on the Earth,” said the researchers. They are testing different approaches in order to improve the design. The team is looking for an opportunity to test the system in space with China's future manned lunar missions. 2 3 1 4 1.What is the main implication of Chinese scientists' discovery of the moon's soil? That's the go-to answer for incoming space objects like asteroids (小行星) and comets, as far as Hollywood is concerned. Movies like Deep Impact and Armageddon rely on nuclear weapons to save the world and deliver the drama. But planetary defense experts say in reality, if astronomers spotted a dangerous incoming space rock, the safest and best answer might be something more subtle, like simply pushing it off course by crashing it with a small spacecraft. That's just what NASA did on Monday evening, when a spacecraft headed straight into an asteroid called Dimorphos, which is around 7 million miles away and poses no threat to Earth. It's about 525 feet across and orbits another larger asteroid. In images streamed as the impact neared, the egg-shaped asteroid grew in size from a little spot on screen to have its full rocky surface come quickly into focus before the signal went dead as the craft hit right on target. Events happened exactly as engineers had planned, they said, with nothing going wrong. “As far as we can tell, our first planetary defense test was a success,” said Elena Adams, the mission systems engineer, who added that scientists looked on with “both terror and joy” as the spacecraft neared its final destination. The impact was the peak of NASA's Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART), a 7-year and more than $300 million effort which launched a space vehicle in November of 2021 to perform humanity's first ever test of planetary defense technology. It will be about two months, scientists said, before they will be able to determine if the impact was enough to drive the asteroid slightly off course, probably shortening its original orbit. NASA plans to launch an asteroid-hunting space telescope named NEO Surveyor in 2026. “We've tracked lots of space rocks, especially the larger ones that could cause extinction-level events. Thankfully, none currently threatens Earth. But many asteroids the size of Dimorphos haven't yet been discovered, and those could potentially take out a city if they came crashing down,” explains Lindley Johnson, NASA's Planetary Defense Officer. 5 6 7 8 5.How did scientists know the craft hit the asteroid successfully? A.The signal from the craft was lost as it hit the target. B.They recorded the whole process with a telescope. C.The little spot on the screen suddenly disappeared. D.They monitored the craft with satellites in space. 根据第四段中的“the signal went dead as the craft hit right on target”可知,飞行器成功击中目标后,飞行器的信号消失。故选A项。 5 6 7 8 6.What is the purpose of launching the spacecraft? A.To search for evidence of alien life. B.To end the asteroid's threat to Earth. C.To save the world and deliver a drama. D.To test technology for defending Earth. 5 6 7 8 7.What can be inferred about Dimorphos? A.It is a dangerous incoming space rock. B.It is an egg-shaped asteroid around Earth. C.It may orbit the same asteroid after the hit. D.It is expected to blow up after the impact. 5 6 7 8 8.Which statement will Lindley Johnson probably agree with? A.Asteroids are equally destructive whatever the size. B.NEO Surveyor is expected to track smaller asteroids. C.Larger asteroids will no longer threaten Earth. D.NASA is responsible for the safety of Earth. 5 6 7 8 C Salad is good for you, generally speaking, so growing fresh greens in orbit seems like a winning way for space workers to stay healthy.New research suggests that as nutritious as space salad might be, it could pose something of a risk to astronauts. The problem is growing leafy plants like lettuce (生菜) in space can come with a side dish of bacteria (细菌), according to a new study from a team at the University of Delaware. In tests on plants grown in modeled micro-gravity, they were shown to actually be more sensitive than normal to the Salmonella enterica (SE)(沙门氏菌). We know that the International Space Station (ISS) is home to a lot of aggressive bacteria, and if these space viruses were to cause widespread sickness in an astronaut crew, it would mean lives were at risk.“You don't want the whole mission to fail just because of a food safety outbreak,” says plant biologist Harsh Bais from the University of Delaware. Bais and his colleagues used a device to perform some clever rotation tricks in the lab, putting lettuce plants into a similar state as they would be in micro-gravity.They then added SE bacteria to the leaves. What was interesting—and surprising—was that the tiny stomata (气孔) in the lettuce opened up to allow the bacteria to get in.Ordinarily, the job of the stomata is to keep dangerous attackers out, while at the same time helping the plant to breathe. The researchers then added a more helpful species of bacteria, one that typically protects plants from external stressors.Again, the defense didn't work in microgravity—suggesting there's something about this state that disables the chemical reactions that the lettuce would normally use to keep itself safe. Add in what we know about space bacteria being particularly tricky, and this is a potential problem. The team behind the study wants to see a lot more research into making sure our foodstuffs are safe outside of orbit. 9.Why can't lettuce be grown in ISS? A.Its leaves take up too much space. B.It brings in illness-causing bacteria.
