Alice Brown, head teacher at Falmont Primary School, was teaching when the floor began to shake.[2] Her students’ reaction⑤ was quick and correct-they moved under their desks, head first, and held on to the legs of the desks. At the same time,Miss Brown quickly
opened the classroom door,in case it became damaged during the shaking and could not open. There were loud crashes⑥ of glass breaking and things falling to the ground, but the students remained still and waited calmly and quietly.
[2]句中含有“sb.be doing sth.when...”
⑤reaction /riˈækʃn/ n.
⑥crash /kræʃ/ n.
The moment the shaking stopped,Miss Brown sensed it was the best time for the class to make their escape.[3] She signalled⑦ to her students to exit⑧ the classroom in an orderly⑨ line covering their heads with their hands[4].Within one minute and twenty seconds, the whole class went down the stairs⑩ and rushed to the playground.Soon students from other classes arrived too. After a roll⑪ call confirmed⑫ that all were safe and sound⑬,they relaxed, laughing, crying and hugging⑭ each other.[5]
[4]句中现在分词短语covering their heads with their hands在句中作方式状语。

“We practise earthquake safety procedures⑮ twice a year,” said Miss Brown,“so the kids were calm enough to protect themselves during the earthquake.”
⑮procedure /prəˈsiːdʒə(r)/ n.
Girl saves 100 from tsunami
By Jessie Cable
21 December
NEWDALE—On 20 December,a series of huge waves caused by an undersea earthquake raced across the ocean near Goldshore and left thousands dead.[6] Goldshore Beach was the only local beach to survive the disaster without any loss of life.[7] A 10-year-old girl,
Sabrina Andron, helped around 100 people escape danger with her knowledge of tsunamis⑯.
[6]句中caused by...
⑯tsunami /tsuːˈnɑːmi/ n.
The day began like any other on Goldshore Beach.People were walking, running or simply sitting on the sandy beach, enjoying the warm sea air and the soft wind that brushed their hair.Sabrina was one of the happy tourists until she noticed something odd⑰.“The water was like the bubbles⑱ on the top of a beer,” she later explained.
“It wasn’t calm and it wasn’t going in and then out.It was just coming in and in and in.” Sabrina had just learnt about tsunamis
in a Geography lesson. It immediately occurred⑲ to her that these were signs of an approaching tsunami.[8]
[8]it为形式主语,代替that引导的真正的主语从句;it occurred to sb.that...
⑰odd /ɒd/ adj.
⑱bubble /ˈbʌbl/ n.
⑲occur /əˈkɜː(r)/ vi.
Sabrina was frightened, but she soon kept her head⑳.She warned her parents of the danger, though at first they just thought she was joking.[9] However,Sabrina was certain that a terrible disaster was on its way and kept asking her parents to talk to a safety officer. To her great relief㉑,the officer immediately realized the coming danger. The beach was rapidly cleared of people, just before the huge waves crashed into the coast.
㉑relief /rɪˈliːf/ n.

A
Elephant Conservation
Country:Thailand
This is a working vacation at a wildlife centre.Anyone can become a volunteer if he/she agrees to help the elephant keepers with tasks.
Daily tasks
Collect the elephants at 6:30 a.m. Take them to look for food in the forest. Clean the enclosure. Swim with the elephants in the lake in the afternoon. If volunteers want to relax after work, they can watch satellite television.
How this vacation helps
If these elephants hadn’t been rescued, they would still be living on the streets of Bangkok. A rural environment is much better for them than an urban environment where there is lots of pollution.
Gorilla Safari
Countries:Kenya,Rwanda,Uganda
Departures:August-December,2-3 departures per month
Extras:gorilla permit £220
If you’re lucky, you’ll see lions, elephants and rhinos on safari. The highlight of the trip is the opportunity to see gorillas in the mountain forests. However, you must be in good health-if a gorilla caught a cold,it would be extremely harmful to its whole family.
How this vacation helps
There are only about 600 mountain gorillas left in the world as human activity has reduced the area where they can live. When you buy a permit, this will pay for the protection of the national park.
Polar Bear Watching
Country:Canada
Departures:sixty trips between October 1-November 19
Every October and November, groups of polar bears gather in Hudson Bay. As they are normally lonely creatures, this is unusual. The bears wait for the ocean to freeze so they can hunt seals,so this is the perfect opportunity to see them.
How this vacation helps
If the Arctic ice cap melts due to global warming, polar bears will be in danger. We give a share of our profits to the Polar Bears Alive Charity.
Your comment
These awesome bears get all the liquid they need from their food.

Rescuers in Jersey said Sunday after an all-night search that there was no hope of survivors from an explosion that flattened a three-story apartment block. At least three people were confirmed killed in the accident early Saturday in the Channel Islands’ port capital St. Helier, following a suspected gas leak.
“We have three confirmed deaths and it’s fair to say we expect to find more,” police chief Robin Smith told a news conference, saying that around 12 residents remained unaccounted for. “It is with sadness that I am confirming that the search-and-rescue operation has been moved to a recovery operation,” he said.
The phase involved a “painstaking search of the debris (残骸)” which could take weeks,Smith said, adding that a gas leak was the “likely” cause. Aided by sniffer dogs and experts from southern England,Jersey emergency workers had searched the rubble (瓦砾) overnight.
Fire chief Paul Brown confirmed that firefighters were called out to investigate the smell of gas on Friday evening, more than seven hours before the explosion. But in vain. He admitted that something had gone “horribly wrong”,considering the subsequent disaster, but insisted that Jersey islanders could still have confidence in his service.
Jersey’s gas supplier,Island Energy, said it was working with the fire service to understand what happened.
Like many others in St. Helier,Jersey’s Chief Minister Kristina Moore said she was awoken by the explosion. “Across the island you could hear this extraordinary sound,” she told the BBC. “It’s unthinkable news,so we’re all absolutely shocked and really worried about the people who are involved and about those whose lives have been lost.”
The incident capped a tragic week for Jersey, whose economy relies on banking, tourism and fishing.
“We must call on the collective strength of the island community,” Moore said.

On May 7th,1902,on the island of Martinique,Ludgar Sylbaris, the town’s drunk and troublemaker, got thrown into prison. However,it turned out to be the luckiest day of his life.
Saint Pierre on Martinique was at the time known as the Paris of Caribbean. It had a big population of 30,000 people and was a cultural centre.Martinique is home to Mount Pelee, one of the most active volcanoes in the world.
In the weeks before Ludgar Sylbaris was thrown into prison, the volcano on the island of Martinique was showing signs of volcanic activity.Without modern Volcanology, people still sensed that something was going to happen, but they didn’t have a really good sense of how big or how dangerous the threat was.Thousands of people left the countryside and came to the city of Saint Pierre because they thought it would be safer there. That was a terrible mistake.
The day after Ludgar Sylbaris went into that prison cell,Mount Pelee exploded. And in an instant 3,000 people were killed.A pressure wave flattened every single building.Anyone who was unlucky enough to be outside was instantly burned to death. Those who were in shelter found themselves choking as their lungs were burned from the inside out. There was really no escape except for one person,Ludgar Sylbaris.
The cell he was in had been built as an armory (军械库).So it had been built within the thick walls and it happened that the only opening in it faced away from the eruption.Even so,super-hot air began to force its way underneath the door. And as his cell heated to extremely high temperatures,he was forced to take off his clothes, push them underneath the door and he peed (小便) on the clothes just to try to keep the hot air from entering. He was still badly burned and wasn’t found until four days later when rescuers heard his cries.

The number of people dying in natural disasters is lower today than it was in the past. 1 However,if you can keep your head and find the right place to stay when the ground starts shaking, you might be able to survive.
2 The biggest danger is falling pieces.Since earthquakes happen suddenly without warning, you have to think quickly to stay safe.If you are indoors during an earthquake, remember:“drop, cover and hold on.”
Drop:When you feel the ground shaking or something crashing, get down on your hands and knees. 3 Quickly crawl (缓慢行进) under a strong desk or table nearby.Don’t try to run downstairs or walk to a safer place because you might fall.If you are in bed, stay there and cover your head with a pillow until the shaking stops.
Cover:Use one hand to cover your neck and head. 4 If not, move towards a wall inside the building, not the outside walls with windows.Stay on your hands and knees, keeping your hand over your neck for protection.
Hold on:Hold onto your desk or table with one hand while keeping the other over your neck and head.Be ready to move with the desk or table. 5
However,if you are outside, driving or at the beach, trying to find something to hide under may not be an option.
A. This keeps you from falling over.
B. If it is not strong enough, turn to another one.
C. Earthquakes can still be destructive, though.
D. Then crawl under a desk or table if there’s one close by.
E.Advanced technology provides many ways for us to stay safer.
F.Remember, don’t try to move until the shaking has completely stopped.
G.The safest place during an earthquake is likely an open field with no trees around.
2.答案:G
解析:根据下文“The biggest danger...‘drop,cover and hold on.’”
3.答案:A
解析:上文“When you feel...your hands and knees.” 故选A。
4.答案:D
解析:根据下文“If not,move...walls with windows.” 时的做法; D项里面的if从句与下文的“if not”照应,该项中的“crawl under a desk or table”与上一段中“Quickly crawl under a strong desk or table nearby.” 故选D。
5.答案:F
解析:根据上文“Hold on:Hold onto...the desk or table.”
