Text 10
My cousin Sandy lives on a farm, working for her father,my uncle. The farm, which is nearly one hundred kilometers from the city, has been owned by my uncle for twenty-five years, ever since my father gave it to him.He raises a large number of animals, including cows, chickens, sheep and ducks.Sandy thinks life on a farm is very different from that in a big city. She doesn't always have to worry about her work, and doesn't have many difficult things to do there.“Most of
the time,I'm my own boss,so I don't have to ask anybody else before I decide to do something. And the most important point is that I never have to hurry to do anything,” Sandy tells me.What's more, she loves not only the fresh air,but also the sweet song of the birds. But she does agree that she sometimes feels bored, since every morning she has to get up very early, and go milking the cows at about half past four.So she goes to bed early every evening,at around nine o'clock.

War and love should never be mixed together, but when it does, some stories are made during its experience. Here are some books about love stories which are set in wartime.
War Bonds by Cindy Hval
The idea to write this book was suggested to the author by her husband. It's a compilation (汇编) of love stories that took place during the war when men and women who made lifelong commitments without knowing what the future would bring. Each story shares a lesson to inspire every heart.
Eve of a Hundred Midnights by Bill Lascher
Bill Lascher had always wanted to be a reporter, and soon discovered his cousin had lived the life he dreamed of living.A month after his grandmother gifted him with his cousin's typewriter used during World War Ⅱ, he slowly uncovered the story told in this book.
Just as World War Ⅱ broke out, Melville and Annalee Jacoby, both war reporters, were faced with a life-and-death decision.Having been married for just a month, the couple had to run for their lives to escape being caught by their enemies.
GI Brides:The Wartime Girls Who Crossed the Atlantic for Love by Duncan Barrett and Nuala Calvi
This book tells the stories of the women in England who married American soldiers. Each GI Bride has her own unique hopes and fears during a time of war when their ever happy dreams are redefined (重新定义) by war, cultural differences, countries, and an uncertain future.
Love Stories of World War Ⅱ by Larry King
Each love story in this book is unique in its own way, but they all share a common topic:love overcomes all. Each couple interviewed shares how they met, how they fell in love, the difficulties they faced and how their love grew stronger leading to marriages that lasted a lifetime.

A valuable sketch (素描) from World War I has turned up in a garage sale in Perth. It's a sketch of soldiers playing soccer with a tin can during an unofficial truce (停战期) between German and Allied soldiers on the Western Front in 1914.The artwork was drawn by an unnamed German soldier during the war on the Western Front.
The artwork was given to Private Jack Shelley, a British soldier, when he was defending the town of Frelinghien, France. The sketch is an important historical document, as it provides evidence that the tales of both sides at war socializing together are true. But for Jack's family it has even greater value, since it was his prized possession.
Jessie Shelley, Jack's great-granddaughter, has fond memories of the old man sharing stories about his experiences in the war.The family lost track of the artwork after Jack's possessions were moved during the sale of his house when he died in 1984.“Great-grandpa had a tobacco tin with a dozen or so buttons from the uniforms of men from both sides. He told us all the details of every one of those buttons. To my great-grandpa they represented real people he had known, some of whom hadn't come home from the war.He had at least two buttons from German uniforms that he told us were exchanged between the men involved in the truce,” Jessie Shelley said.
On the day of the truce in 1914,the soldiers came out of their trenches (战壕) into the no-man's-land and shared food, drinks and cigarettes. Some even exchanged small gifts. The men even played football games together.Later, this spirit of cooperation continued in unofficial agreements between the sides to stop shooting at mealtimes and even at times when soldiers were working in the open.
This fascinating image of peace and humanity during the war has continued through the years. The sketch is a symbol of the potential for humanity, hope and kindness to exist in even the most violent circumstances.

The flight of butterflies has so far been somewhat of a secret to researchers, given their unusually large and broad wings relative to their body size.Researchers at Lund University in Sweden have studied the aerodynamics (空气动力) of butterflies in a wind tunnel (风洞).The results suggest that butterflies use a highly helpful flap(拍打) technique, therefore making use of their unique wings. This helps them rapidly take off when escaping natural enemies.
The researchers studied the wingbeats of freely flying butterflies during takeoff in a wind tunnel.During the upward process, the wings cup, creating an air-filled pocket between them. When the wings strike each other, the air is forced out, resulting in a backward strong stream of air that pushes the butterflies forward. The downward wingbeat has another function: the butterflies stay in the air and do not fall to the ground.
The wings' striking was described by researchers almost 50 years ago, but it is only in this study that the theory has been tested on real butterflies in free flight.Until now, it has been generally believed that butterfly wings are aerodynamically inefficient. However, the researchers suggest that the opposite is actually true.
“That the wings are cupped when butterflies flap them together, makes the wing flap much more effective. It is an elegant mechanism that is far more advanced than we imagined, and it is fascinating,”says biology researcher Per Henningsson, who studied the butterflies' aerodynamics.“The results of the study could help inspire improved performance and flight technology in small unmanned aircraft,”he continues.
In addition to studying the butterflies, the researchers designed mechanical wings that are modeled on real ones. The shape and flexibility of the mechanical wings as they are cupped and folded confirm the efficiency.Their measurements show that the pushing force created by the flexible wings is 22 percent higher and the efficiency 28 percent better compared to rigid wings.

Imagine driving behind a huge truck shooting clouds of smoke into the air while your new fully electric vehicle cleans up its carbon emissions (排放物). This dream may soon be a reality. A team of students in the Netherlands has created an electric car that not only doesn't produce carbon dioxide when driving, but actually pulls it out of the air.
The two-seater sports car was designed and built in less than a year by a team of 32 students at Eindhoven University of Technology. Called “ZEM”, which stands for “zero emission mobility”, the car is equipped with special devices that remove carbon dioxide from the air as it drives. The team says if ZEM is driven about 32,000 kilometers, it can remove 2 kilograms of carbon dioxide from the air. That's not a huge amount. The team calculates that 10 ZEM cars on the road for a year would remove as much carbon dioxide as a typical tree does during that time. However, they also point out that there are over a billion passenger cars in the world that could be using this technology. And if a billion cars were removing carbon dioxide instead of producing it, the result would be huge.
ZEM also has several other innovations that help to make it more capable of being sustained: The car's frame and panels (面板) are 3D printed to reduce waste; it was built using recycled and recyclable materials;it can be easily taken apart so that many of its parts can be reused. ZEM's battery is also reusable, and has another handy feature: It can be charged with solar panels on the car's roof, and can even be used to provide power to your house when the car isn't on the road.
According to the statistics, transportation was responsible for over 20% of global carbon dioxide emissions in 2020, and of those emissions, cars were responsible for 41%. The Eindhoven team says its goal is to challenge the electric car industry : If 32 students can build a car like this in less than a year, then surely car manufacturers (生产商) are expected to adopt these innovations, too.

Most people have a hero in their hearts. For me, Yuan Longping, a great Chinese agricultural scientist, is the hero in my heart.
In the 1960s, China experienced famine and Yuan Longping came up with an idea for hybridizing rice.He developed a new way of growing rice and hence new rice was developed. With the development of new rice, gone are the days when Chinese people suffer from terrible starvation, and more countries in the world are able to grow more rice to feed the growing population.

One night, Ryder saw his mother crying and learned she could no longer afford her next chemotherapy (化疗).He broke his piggy bank and offered her all his savings.Although it touched Annie's heart, she told him it wasn't enough.Ryder was so disappointed and hurried to the washroom to cry alone. It hurt him terribly to see his mother, who had long hair, and was now bald (秃头的).
In an attempt to emotionally support her, Ryder shaved his head.“Oh, Ryder!” Annie cried after seeing him.She was moved by what her son had done by sacrificing his hair.“Mom, I am with you in this way.And you are not alone,” Ryder cried along, hardly knowing he would be laughed at by his best friends the next day.
A school fair had been organized in the playground, and many people, including parents, were gathering around the stalls (摊位).“Hey, look, someone in our class has lost all his hair!” Ryder's friends laughed when he emerged.
Ryder shyly covered his head in a hat.He carried two bags stuffed with some of his favorite toys, books, and recycled craft items he intended to sell at the fair.
As time passed, things were quickly getting sold in all the other stalls except Ryder's.He didn't find time to put up a fancy display or banner (横幅) to attract buyers. But he was determined to make a sale for his mother. So he took out a pen and a giant piece of paper and decided to create a sign that read: Help My Mom Fight Cancer.
“Please help me.I shaved my head to support my mother. But all are making fun of me without understanding me.And I have to sell these items and help her with some money. Please don't let me down,” he shouted. The fair was about to end, and fortunately Ryder had managed to successfully sell most of his items.
