My parents are out so I’m staying in to take care of my little brother. Text 2 M:What’s Sara doing in that shop? W:She’s buying some postcards to send to her family. M:Really? I prefer to make phone calls. W:I like neither postcards nor phone calls. I usually keep in touch with my family through the Internet. Text 3 W:I’m thirsty after that race. M:This green tea is really good. I bought it over there in the café. W:Is there orange juice? M:I don’t think so,but they’ve got hot chocolate if you prefer that. Text 4 W:James,I have to put all of these boxes into the car. Any chance you could help me? M:Can you give me a minute? I just need to make a quick phone call. Text 5 M:Hello,I think I have the flu. I feel awful. I’d like to see a doctor. W:Could you come tomorrow afternoon at one o’clock? M:OK,see you tomorrow. W:And remember to take your ID card and insurance card with you. Text 6 W:What can I do for you? M:My name is Gordon Baker from Room 1604. Could you check to see if anything has been delivered for me? W:Ah,yes,an envelope was dropped off for you. Here you are. M:I’ve been expecting that, thank you. It contains some papers I need to send to my office. Do you happen to have a fax machine I could use now? W:Certainly. There’s one on the second floor. You’ll need to cross the hall and go upstairs to get there. M:Thanks very much. Text 7 M:This is Andrew Brown. What can I do for you? W:Mr. Brown,I may have your mobile phone. M:Oh,yes. I thought I had lost it somewhere on the underground this morning. W:Actually I found it under a table at a restaurant and I thought I should call the work number I found in its directory. M:Thank you very much. I appreciate you calling me. It is such a relief! I just thought I needed to buy a new one as soon as possible. W:I thought it was the right thing to do. I work in TC Bank on Roosevelt Street and I leave at about five,so please come to pick it up before then. M:OK. See you then and thanks again. Text 8 M:Amanda, could you make a call to the cinema to see if there are still some seats left for the movie this afternoon? W:I’ve already booked tickets online for the two o’clock movie. I’m thinking of picking them up from the ticket office on the way to the restaurant. What do you think? M:OK. Well, the Smiths want to move our appointment forward by a half hour earlier. That means we should be there at 11:30. W:Then we don’t have enough time. We’d better get moving. Oh,before I forget, can you remind me to stop by the bookstore on the way back home? I have to order a book there. M:OK. Text 9 M:Gina,Gina...Gina? What are you doing? W:Oh,I was just thinking about our conversation with Lucy the other night. I hope Lucy can find someplace to take flying lessons. M:I was surprised. I had no idea that Lucy was interested in learning how to fly. W:Yeah. And did you know she wanted to leave her job and go back to school? She says she doesn’t have enough responsibility as a nurse. She wants to be a doctor. I hope her dream comes true. M:Me too. By the way,are you still thinking about opening an Italian restaurant? W:I wish I could. But I can’t do that unless I have a lot of money. M:I know. Sometimes I wish we’d win a lot of money. But we need to be more realistic. Why don’t you consider teaching an Italian cooking class? You’re a great cook and you could do it here at home. W:Gee,Frank, that’s not a bad idea. I could get more experience and build a reputation. And then, eventually,I might be able to teach an evening class at one of the community colleges. M:See? Aren’t you glad you married me? I have good ideas sometimes. Text 10 W:Hello, everyone. Today I’ll talk about how to improve your pronunciation. Language researchers say pronunciation and fluency are the biggest barriers, followed by grammar,in effective spoken English. However, most people don’t regard pronunciation as a very important part of communication skills. They’re more focused on vocabulary. One reason is that most people are not even aware of their mispronunciations. So it’s important to first find out the words you mispronounce. You should listen to experts.By experts,I mean those who are less likely to make pronunciation mistakes. When listening to them, pay attention to words that sound strange.Strange, because you pronounce the same words differently. When you come across such words, check a dictionary to confirm their exact pronunciations. You can also search for difficult-to-pronounce words and names, and make a list of them. The last suggestion is to read aloud. Now you’ve got the correct pronunciations of the words,it’s time to practice reading them every day. A Instead of paying to ship the items you don’t need to your new home, why not donate them?Your old household goods like furniture will go to a new home where they will be appreciated. Here are some charities that might help. I volunteered to go to Guatemala with an eyeglass team from International Relief Teams—an organization I have supported in other ways for many years. Our team went to a small town in Guatemala. We set up our tables and packages of pre-made glasses in the dirty courtyard of a clinic, put up the Snellen chart (an eye chart) on a wall, and began our work. Young and old people came from many of the surrounding towns. Most had never received an eye exam before. They waited for hours patiently in the sun, never complaining. If we could help them out, their thankfulness for a simple pair of glasses was overwhelming. Some only left with eye drops or sunglasses, and even these people expressed their gratitude sincerely. All of them were very generous with blessings and smiles. We heard over and over from people who knew their eyes needed help but they had not gone to a doctor because it was too expensive,or had not got the glasses they needed for the same reason. It’s so easy to overlook how much difference the volunteers’ small actions can make to the lives of people in Guatemala. The glasses in my country are so easily available, but to people in Guatemala, they are not. As those who could give them a hand,we watched their lives change. What a gift sight is—and what a difference being able to see clearly makes! Here, we’d like you to join us and take action to help people in need. And every day, those actions change lives. No action is too small;no action is ever wasted. 24.What do we know about the volunteers in the eyeglass team? A.Their working environment is simple. B.They are medical experts nationwide. C.Their initial preparation is inadequate. D.They have served people in Guatemala for years. 由第二段中的“We set up our tables and packages of pre-made glasses in the dirty courtyard...and began our work.” 故选A项。 24 25 26 27 25.Which of the following words can be used to describe most people in Guatemala? A.Kind and helpful. B.Poor but grateful. C.Considerate and patient. D.Knowledgeable but unhealthy. 由第三段中的“Some only left with eye drops or sunglasses, and even these people expressed their gratitude sincerely.”可推知,危地马拉人是感恩的;由第三段中的“they had not gone to a doctor because it was too expensive, or had not got the glasses they needed for the same reason”可推知,危地马拉人很贫穷。故选B项。 26.What can we infer from paragraph 4? A.Rome was not built in a day. B.Actions speak louder than words. C.Don’t look down upon those less fortunate. D.Don’t take what you have today for granted. 24 25 26 27 27.What is the author’s purpose in writing the text? A.To urge people to protect their eyes. B.To ask people to volunteer in Guatemala. C.To call on people to do good deeds in daily life. D.To show the difficult life of people in Guatemala. 由最后一段中的“Here,we’d like you to join us and take action to help people in need.” C Despite many public health campaigns to highlight various problems with sugary drinks,we drink them a lot. But,not everyone consumes them. Two new studies shed light on the fact that some of us easily fall victim to the harms of sugary drinks than others. Though sugary drinks are everywhere, some people find them harder to resist and the first study, conducted by professor Joshua McGreen at Flinders University, sought to understand why. For the research,128 young adults of 17 to 25 completed a computer test evaluating their attitudes to soft drinks, measured against their soft drink consumption. The study showed that the more unconscious positive judgments individuals had of soft drink advertising, the more soft drink they consumed. It also found that a lack of inhibitory control, which is the cognitive process that allows us to control our desires—say, to buy a nice-tasting soft drink even though we know it’s unhealthy—was also a factor in increased consumption. The second study provides clues about who is more easily influenced by the marketing strategies. The study found that soft drink companies have multibillion dollar advertising and marketing budgets aimed to “create, maintain and increase consumer demand around benefits related to happiness, social status etc.”. These campaigns are increasingly being directed at disadvantaged groups, including children and adolescents generally, and people living in disadvantaged neighborhoods. Soft drinks, even “zero-sugar” ones, are typically high in calories, but of little nutritional benefit. Placing a tax on sweet drinks may be one strategy to reduce people’s consumption. McGreen also suggests that people develop strong self-control of soft drink consumption. It’s something he wants to research further. He adds,“I would also like to ban advertisements for soft drinks for sports or programs that appeal to children. It is specially important for sports people to stop being walking billboards for junk food and drinks.” 28 29 30 31 28.What do the two new studies focus on? A.The harm of sugary drinks. B.The popularity of sugary drinks. C.The consumers of sugary drinks. D.The profit made by sugary drinks. 根据第一段中的“Two new studies shed light on the fact that some of us easily fall victim to the harms of sugary drinks than others.” 28 29 30 31 29.Who are most likely to buy sugary drinks according to McGreen? A.Those who have a good spending habit. B.Those who can control their desires well. C.Those who have a good impression of soft drinks. D.Those who have no interest in soft drink advertising. 根据第二段中的“The study showed that the more unconscious positive judgments individuals had of soft drink advertising, the more soft drink they consumed.” 30.What is the last paragraph mainly about? A.The warning against the consumption of soft drinks. B.Suggestions on reducing the consumption of soft drinks. C.The importance of sports stars in advertising soft drinks. D.Plans to research into self-control of soft drink consumption. 28 29 30 31 31.In which section of a newspaper may this text appear? A.Entertainment. B.Health. C.Education. D.Sports. D Chances are you talk to yourself throughout the day whether you’re aware of it or not—everything from “I’m going to be late” to “I love this dress” has likely crossed your mind pretty often. But have you ever said such phrases out loud? “Expressing some inner thoughts out loud can actually help you better deal with the present and future and is something we all should start doing,” says psychotherapist Lisa Ferentz.Ferentz employs this practice most often when it comes to helping her patients develop a positive attitude to themselves and the day ahead. She says, “There’s nothing more important than the way we talk to ourselves because inner thoughts tell us about all our later thoughts, emotional states, and behavioral choices.” A good way to have a healthy mental state is to write down what you’re grateful for and what you’re good at, and then say those things out loud.“Like anything else, once you practice and approach it from a positive place, you discover it’s quite easy to do.It guides our life whether we notice it or not,” says Ferentz. Ferentz also advises people to whisper aloud pep talks before heading into a possibly stressful situation.“When we whisper positively to ourselves it gives us more strength and courage so we can meet a challenging situation head-on,” she says. That agrees with research that found athletes are often fans of self-talk ahead of competitions.  Of course, there’s also a place for negative self-talk if you approach it the right way.“It’s important to understand what you’re feeling whether it’s positive or negative.Saying negative thoughts out loud can be very profitable,” says Ferentz.“Bringing the negative thing you’re thinking and feeling to the surface gives you the opportunity to reconsider it.” So next time you hold a little two-way conversation with yourself, don’t worry;it’s perfectly OK! 32.How does Ferentz keep her patients mentally healthy? A.Have them open up to others. B.Adjust practice based on their behavior. C.Help them manage their emotional state. D.Let them say their own thoughts out loud. 32 33 34 35 33.What does the underlined part “pep talks” in paragraph 4 probably mean? A.Encouraging words. B.Straight dialogues. C.Popular speeches. D.Easy topics. 根据下文中的“When we whisper...a challenging situation head-on”可知,当我们乐观积极地自言自语时,就能直面具有挑战性的局面。 32 33 34 35 34.What does Ferentz indicate in the last paragraph? A.People prefer positive self-talk. B.A two-way conversation is necessary. C.Negative self-talk can come in useful. D.Think before speaking out negative self-talk. come in useful“用得着,派得上用场”。 32 33 34 35 35.Which is the best title for the text? A.What’s Your Self-talk Telling You? B.Is Talking to Yourself a Good Thing? C.Do You Really Need to Talk to Yourself? D.How do Your Inner Thoughts Benefit You? 纵观全文,尤其是根据第二段中的“Expressing some inner thoughts out loud can actually help you”可知,本文主要介绍了大声表达出自己的内心想法是有益的,故B项适合作为本文标题。 Ageing can be a difficult time for many people: They may feel lonely, and have financial stress or medical issues. 36 But some elderly people may need the help of people who volunteer their time and assist them with basic tasks. Considering you want to help the elderly, here are the ways to find rewarding volunteer opportunities.  36 37 38 39 40 36 37 38 39 40 A.Speak with local authorities. B.Join a group or an organization. C.Many seniors rely on the help of family and friends as they get older. D.These are also great places to volunteer your time to help the elderly. E.An excellent way to do this is to donate money to an organization that helps seniors. F.These often need volunteers to help with the elderly in your community and beyond. G.This is to ensure the safety of the elderly from persons who may try to take advantage of them. 答案:C 36 37 38 39 40 根据下文表示转折的连词but可知,本空应与下文的“some elderly people may need the help of people who volunteer their time and assist them...with basic tasks”构成转折关系,C选项描述的是不需要志愿者服务的老年人,与下文构成转折关系,符合语境。 37 Your community likely has elderly people who could need things such as a simple conversation, buying them groceries, or taking them to clinics. Asking local authorities such as community service centers, medical professionals, or departments of ageing can make you find volunteer opportunities. 根据下文中的“Asking local authorities”可知,此处应选A项“Speak with local authorities (与地方当局谈话)”,与之呼应。 36 37 38 39 40 36 37 38 39 40 Work at a local senior living community. Your local area probably has senior living communities such as assisted living and nursing facilities. 38 Contact the local senior living community’s staff to ask how you can volunteer to help the elderly in their facilities.  36 37 38 39 40 A.Speak with local authorities. D项中的these指代的是上文中的“senior living communities such as assisted living and nursing facilities”。本空易误选F项,虽然F选项也有代词these,但F项中的“help with the elderly in your community and beyond(帮助在你的社区以内或以外的老年人)”与本段主题句“Work at a local senior living community.(在当地的老年人生活社区工作)”不符。 36 37 38 39 40 36 37 38 39 40 Go through the application process. Thanks for your listening. [参考范文] Hello, everyone. Today, I’m going to introduce the person I adore most—Yuan Longping, a great Chinese agricultural scientist.  Yuan studied agriculture at college and began experimenting with crop breeding. He concluded the only way to feed people was to produce a new type of rice which could give a higher yield. After several years of hard work, he successfully made a breakthrough, making China’s total rice output rise from 56.9 million tons in 1950 to 194.7 million tons in 2017. Yuan’s rice has been exported to other countries to increase their rice production, too. Undoubtedly, Yuan will be remembered and respected forever for his great contributions to the whole world. That’s all. Thanks for your listening. White puffs were lined up in front of me, with the sea of mayonnaise (蛋黄酱) spread over them. How many times had I done this? How many more times would I be forced to do it? My dad would soon be leaving to feed the homeless. My father and several volunteers gathered every day in the park to feed the hungry.Luckily,I didn’t have to go there.I had enough trouble getting everything ready. I really didn’t understand why my father bothered with it. I couldn’t wait for him to leave. I looked forward to a whole Saturday of my own.I planned to watch some television programmes, talk with my friends on the phone, and maybe do some shopping during the afternoon. It didn’t take long for my plans to change and my happiness to disappear. Dad came in while I was doing the packing and stood behind me. “I’m going to need your help today. Some of the volunteers that usually help me won’t be able to make it.”“Dad, I can’t help you today,”I said.“I have plans.”He just gave me the you-should-be-ashamed-of-yourself look. “Fine,” I said angrily. I finished packing the sandwiches and followed Dad out to the van. I wanted to cry. This was going to be the worst day ever. My dad always drove the van, which also contained clothes, shoes and small bags filled with personal items. When we arrived at the park, people were already gathered under a tree waiting for us. We opened the back of the van and pulled out a long cafeteria table and some chairs. I put the table on one side of the van with the food on it, while my dad lined up chairs on the other side for them to sit in. I couldn’t believe so many people were there and all of them were homeless. I was surprised to learn my dad knew most of them by name. He also seemed to know what each one needed, what they had suffered and what landed them in trouble. Then,a girl about my age caught my attention. _____________ ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ When everyone was gone,we loaded things back into the van. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ [参考范文] Then,a girl about my age caught my attention. There was dirt on her face and hair. Much to my surprise, she didn’t wear shoes. She walked to me and asked in a low voice whether I had some shoes that fit her. Staring into her blue eyes, I was unable to believe someone in this world could live such a poor life. “Let me have a check,” I replied gently. Looking back into the van, to my excitement, I found a pair of shoes that were the right size for her. Then I handed her the shoes. “Thank you!” she cried happily, with a big smile spreading across her face. After thanking me, she put them on and ran back to the street. I felt warm inside as I watched her leave.  $$
