M:I’d be glad to. Text 5 W:My hobby is sightseeing. What’s yours,Peter? M:Photography is one of my favorites. W:Why do you like it? M:Because he suffers from anxiety. He lacks confidence. His brain is so active and he thinks too much. When it comes to exams, his intelligence actually works against him. W:I wish we could help him.It seems so unfair that a person’s future can be determined by how well they perform on one particular day. M:It is unfair—but life is unfair. We must try to help him by showing him how to keep calm in stressful situations. W:How do we do that? I can’t say that I’m exactly an expert at dealing with stress, although I am better at it than I used to be. W:Anything except English.I have a hard time with your language. M:But your English is excellent. You sound almost like a native. W:Thank you.I’ve had to study hard, and I practice a lot because everybody in my family speaks it. M:Funny. So does everybody in mine. Text 10 W:People appear to be born to compute. The counting skills of children develop so fast that it is easy to imagine an inside clock of computing guiding their growth. Not long after learning to walk and talk, children can set the table with impressive accuracy:one knife, one spoon and one fork for each of the five chairs.Soon they are capable of doing something that requires them to place five knives, five spoons and five forks on the table.Of course, the truth is not so simple. This century, the work of psychologists has explained the forms of daily learning on which mental progress depends.Children were observed as they slowly grasped concepts that adults take for granted.Such as,quantity is not changed as water pours from a short fat glass into a tall thin one.Psychologists have shown that young children, when asked to count the pencils in a pile, readily report the number of blue or red pencils, but must be guided to find the total number.Such studies have suggested that the introduction of mathematics is mastered gradually, and with effort. The studies have also suggested that the concept of abstract numbers is not something born with. A After Impressionism: Inventing Modern Art 25 March-13 August Rooms 1 to 8 Explore a period of great change when artists broke with established tradition and laid the foundations for the art of the 20th and the 21st centuries. The decades between 1880 and the outbreak of the First World War in 1914 were a complex, energetic period of artistic questioning, searching, risk-taking and innovation. The exhibition celebrates the achievements of three giants of the period: Paul Cézanne, Vincent van Gogh and Paul Gauguin and follows the influences they had on younger generations of French artists and on wider circles of artists across Europe. With over a hundred works by artists ranging from Picasso to Mondrian and a selection of sculptures by artists including Rodin and Camille Claudel, the exhibition follows the creation of a new, modern art, free of convention, taking in Expressionism and Abstraction. The exhibition includes some of the most famous works of art created during these decades. Important loans come to the exhibition from institutions and private collections worldwide. Ticket prices Free for members Priority booking open for members. Join today to get early access to tickets, plus enjoy the exhibition in advance on 24 March. Ryan and his 10-year-old daughter, Keira, recently showed their artistic gifts at a Beck Center exhibit. “Side by Side: The Art of Ryan and Keira Finley” includes the pair’s artistic expression of the same things. I first met the Finleys when I was a student in Ryan’s class. Keira, now a fourth grader, has been creating art since she was a young child. “She was always next to me, lying on the ground drawing,” Ryan remembered. Keira’s love for art continued, and she became a student in Ryan’s class at Beck Center. Keira said, “The best part of Side by Side was having friends and classmates come to see the exhibit. I loved walking around with my dad and talking to everybody.” Keira told local news media that she’d love art even if her dad had a different job. “If my dad wasn’t an artist,” she said, “I’d still probably be doing this.” Ryan’s interest in art also began in childhood. “I’d always be drawing when I wasn’t supposed to be,” he said. “I’d get notes all the time saying, ’You need to focus more on your work.’” That interest never left him. “In high school, I took every art class I could possibly take,” he said. When asked what he liked best about his job, Ryan was quite certain. “Surely the art show I just had with Keira,” he said. “It’s hard to even put into words. It’s pretty touching.” Ryan also loves working with students. “I do my best to make sure that they’re having fun with what they’re doing,” he said. “My favorite part is seeing the growth of students.” 24.What do we know about the Beck Center exhibit? Henri Murger proved that. He was born the son of a doorman in France. Living in Paris, he was surrounded by creative geniuses and dreamed of joining them, but he grew upset with his failure to earn money. In 1847, Murger published a book. It’s a collection of stories about poverty, which launched the concept of the “Starving Artists” into the public’s understanding as the model for a creative life. To this day, it endures as the model for what we imagine when we think of the word “artist”. Today, what we forget is that the story of the “Starving Artist” is a myth. In fact, it is really just an imaginary story. Due to the power of this myth in Murger’s book, many of us just want to become lawyers instead of writers, bankers instead of poets, and doctors instead of painters. Nobody wants to struggle ultimately. Thus, we just keep our passion a hobby instead of a career. In the early Renaissance, artists did not have reputations for being diligent workers. They were considered manual laborers, receiving small amounts of money for their work. Michelangelo Buonarroti, however, changed all that. He was not only a master sculptor but also the most affluent artist of his time. After him, every artist began to see a “new pattern of doing things”, in the words of Bill Wallace, professor of art history at Washington University. Michelangelo established the idea that an artist could become a new figure in society and have a higher social status, and also that he could become financially successful. Michelangelo did not need to starve for his creations, and neither do you. When we hear the tales and warnings about what it means to be an artist, we must understand an important truth—you don’t have to starve and you might as well make a living from your creative talents. 28.What concept is presented in Henri Murger’s story collection? A.Artists are not easy to become well known. B.Being creative is not a really good thing sometimes. C.Artists usually experience financial difficulties. D.One has to be a very creative genius to be an artist. 28 29 30 31 29.What is described in paragraph 3? A.People’s imagination of artists. B.People’s various comments on being artists. C.Murger’s understanding of artists. D.The influence of Murger’s book. 28 29 30 31 30.What does the underlined word “affluent” in paragraph 4 probably mean? A.Wealthy. B.Controversial. C.Starving. D.Humorous. 根据第四段中的“They were considered manual laborers, receiving small amounts of money for their work. Michelangelo Buonarroti, however, changed all that. (他们被认为是体力劳动者,工作收入很少。然而,Michelangelo Buonarroti改变了那一切)”中的however表示转折可知,上文说的是收入很低, 而Michelangelo Buonarroti 改变了那一切后,工作收入变得很高,由此可推断出,画线词的含义为“富有的”,故选A项。 28 29 30 31 31.What’s the main purpose of the last paragraph? A.To ask people to read more tales. B.To advise people to make use of their talents. C.To encourage people to lead a rich life. D.To tell successful artists an important truth. 根据最后一段中的“you don’t have to starve and you might as well make a living from your creative talents(你不必挨饿, 说不定你还能利用你创造性的天分去谋生)”可知,最后一段的目的是劝说人们要充分利用他们的才能,故选B项。 28 29 30 31 D Pieter Bruegel the Elder’s 1565 realistic painting The Harvesters hangs at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. “The work describes farmers cutting wheat nearly as tall as they are,” Ghent University biologist Ive De Smet says. “Nowadays, if you walk through a wheat field, you basically see wheat is about knee-high, which is a result of selective breeding (培育) from the second half of the 20th century.” De Smet says he’s teaming up with art historian David Vergauwen of Amarant to look at things where they can spot differences in shape, in color, and in size. Wheat is just one example of how a historical artwork can help track the transformation of food crops over time. Friends since childhood, they took an interest in plants in artworks and began with a visit to the Hermitage Museum in Russia—where they noticed an odd-looking watermelon in an early-17th-century painting by Flemish artist Frans Snyders. “So if you think of a watermelon, you cut it through, and it should be dark red on the inside. But that one appeared to be pale and white.” De Smet assumed the painter had done a poor job. But Vergauwen said, “This is one of the best painters ever from that era. So if he paints it like that, that’s the way it must have been.” Other paintings showed that both red and white watermelons were raised during the 17th century. The team hopes to set up an online research database of historical plant artworks. They create a social media hashtag (标签) for it. Anyone could send pictures of relevant artworks and details of plants when they visit a museum or exhibition through the hashtag. But, they add, the sources need to be realistic. “If you’re going to use, for example, Picasso to understand how a pear looked, you might be misled.” 32 33 34 35 32.What can we learn from De Smet’s words in paragraph 1? A.Humans have mainly fed on wheat since 1565. B.Wheat has gone through great changes in height. C.The scene in The Harvesters may be unbelievable. D.Selective breeding affects agricultural structure. 根据第一段中“The work describes farmers cutting wheat nearly as tall as they are”和“Nowadays, if you walk through a wheat field, you basically see wheat is about knee-high”可知,小麦的高度由几乎和人一样高变成齐膝高,在高度上经历了很大的变化。故选B。 32 33 34 35 33.What is Vergauwen’s attitude to the watermelon painted by Frans Snyders? A.Doubtful. B.Disapproving. C.Favorable. D.Curious. 根据第三段中Vergauwen说的话“This is one of the best painters ever from that era. So if he paints it like that, that’s the way it must have been.” C。 32 33 34 35 34.Why is the social media hashtag created? A.To encourage people to focus on art. B.To collect more paintings for their database. C.To advertise their research database. D.To share some historical plant artworks. B。 32 33 34 35 35.What is the text mainly about? A.Ancient paintings focus on food crops. B.Two men create a database of plant artworks. C.Plants today are different from their ancestors. D.Old art reveals agricultural information. What Makes Art Valuable? Why do people buy art? An even bigger question is, why do people pay tens of millions of dollars to own art? Is it for status, prestige (威望), and approval from peers? One thing to remember is that value isn’t only linked to its artistic quality. 36 Provenance (出处) In the art world, an artwork’s value can be the result of provenance. In other words, who has owned the painting in the past. 37 The masterpiece went from a value of less than $10, 000 when David Rockefeller first owned it, to upwards of $72 million when it was later sold by Sotheby’s. The Thrill of Auction (拍卖) The salerooms at Christie’s or Sotheby’s are full of billionaires—or better yet, their advisors. 38 They know when to bump up a lot and when to slightly tip the scales. They’re running the show and it’s their job to make sure the highest bidder (出价者) has a shot and that values soar. Historical Significance Historical significance works in a couple of ways when it comes to determining the value of art. Firstly, you can consider the piece in terms of its importance to art history in its genre. For example, a painting by Claude Monet is worth more than other more recent impressionist works since Monet changed the standard of art history and impressionism as a whole. 39 After all, art is often a reflection of the culture of its time and as it became a product, art was affected by political and historical changes. 40 Whether in a perfect storm of passion and desire or a calculated risk of business deals and rewards, art collectors continue to spend millions upon millions each year at art auctions. What makes art valuable beyond the cost of supplies and labor? We may never truly understand. A.World history also affects the value of art. B.It’s interesting to explore what makes art valuable. C.It seems as though all of these factors combine to determine the value of art. D.Auctioneers are skilled salesmen who help raise those prices up and up and up. E.It’s obvious that changes in politics have a historical effect on the value of art to different people. She didn’t know why she just wasn’t any good at drawing, painting, or cutting. Ms. Clay, the art teacher, stood at the front of the room. “Class, next Friday our school is going to have an art competition,” she announced. Ms.Clay was a great teacher, and Risha liked her a lot. But this announcement made Risha nervous.“Everyone in the school will create a piece of artwork to show in the library. You can use different types of artwork we have been studying.” Ms. Clay was quite excited when she spoke while Risha found herself sinking lower into her chair. Risha had the whole weekend to work on her project, but she could not think of anything to do. On Monday, Risha felt frightened, so after school Risha asked Ms.Clay if she could write an article about art instead of doing an art project. “I understand this project scared you, Risha,” Ms. Clay said.“Just remember, you can create any kind of art you want,” Ms. Clay smiled at her. “ Art is a person’s way of expressing his or her feelings—it isn’t always painting, drawing, or cutting. I know you will think of something very creative, and I can’t wait to see it.” When Risha arrived home, she took out a piece of paper and a pencil. She remembered Ms.Clay’s words. “Art is a person’s way of expressing his or her feelings.” Risha wrote the word “terrified” on a piece of paper. She crumpled (弄皱) the paper and threw it to the side of her desk. Risha stared at the crumpled ball, which reminded her of a snowball._____________________________________________________________________________________________________________ On Friday, Risha carried her snowman-themed project into the library._______________________________________________________________________________________________________________ [参考范文] Risha stared at the crumpled ball, which reminded her of a snowball. Suddenly an idea struck her. Why not create a winter wonderland out of crumpled paper? Risha didn’t have to draw or paint or even cut. Risha made many paper balls, glued them all together, and placed them on a big piece of hard paper to form a snowman. The snowman wore a hat made of black paper and a scarf made of red paper. Her finished project was really incredible. On Friday, Risha carried her snowman-themed project into the library. She noticed the smiles and the nods from teachers and other students as she put her work on a table. Ms. Clay came up to Risha. “You have created a creative piece of artwork. I am so proud of you!” Ms. Clay said. Risha was proud of herself too. Her pride grew when Ms. Clay placed a first-place star on her artwork. “Perhaps I can be a good artist,” Risha thought. $$
