vi. HABITS FOR A HEALTHY LIFESTYLE As teenagers grow up①, they become more independent and start making their own decisions②.However,during this period,it can be easy for some of them to form bad habits.These bad habits,if left unchecked,could lead to③ more serious ones when they become adults. For example, some of them may become involved in④ tobacco⑤ or alcohol⑥ abuse⑦,which can lead to physical and mental health problems.To prevent harmful habits like these from⑧ dominating⑨ a teenager's life is essential. They must learn to recognise bad habits early and make appropriate changes. it为形式主语,不定式to form bad habits是真正的主语。 ①grow up 成长,长大 ②make one's own decisions 做出自己的决定 ③lead to 导致;通向(to为介词) ④become/be involved in 被卷入……;陷入…… ⑤tobacco /tə'bækəʊ/ n. 滥用;虐待;辱骂 ⑧prevent...from doing sth. To change bad habits is never easy,even with many attempts⑩.There is a famous saying based on the philosophy of Aristotle:“We are what we repeatedly do.” In many ways, our lifestyle is the sum of choices we have made.We make a choice to do something⑪, and then we repeat it over and over again⑫.Soon that choice becomes automatic and forms a habit that is much harder to change. The good news is that we can change,if we understand how habits work. 句中based on... ⑩with many attempts 尝试很多次 ⑪make a choice to do sth. =choose to do sth. According to modern psychology⑬, we must first learn about the “habit cycle”, which works like this: ⑬psychology /saɪ'kɒlədʒi/ n.心理学;心理;心理影响 根据现代心理学,我们必须首先了解“习惯周期”,它是这样运作的: ·Firstly, there is a “cue”, an action, event,or situation that acts as⑭ a signal to do something. ·Secondly, there is a “routine”, the regular action you take in response to⑮ the cue. ⑮in response to 响应;回答;对…… ·Thirdly, there is the “reward⑯”, the good thing or feeling we get from the routine. ⑯reward /rɪ'wɔːd/ n. For example, when we feel unhappy (cue),we eat lots of unhealthy snacks (routine),which makes us feel happy (reward). The reward makes us much more likely to⑰ continue the cycle, and the bad habit of relying on⑱ unhealthy snacks is formed. ⑰make sb. much more likely to do sth. To facilitate⑲ a positive change in our bad habits,we must first examine⑳ our bad habit cycles and then try to adapt them.We can do this by combining the information from our habit cycles with㉑ our own positive ideas. For example,we could try to replace a negative㉒ routine with㉓ something more positive. So,when we feel unhappy again (cue),rather than㉔ eat snacks,we could listen to some of our favourite music instead (routine),which will make us feel relaxed (reward).Aside from㉕ changing bad habits,we can also use the habit cycle to create good habits. For example, when we come to an escalator (cue),our normal routine is to ride it,but we could change this routine into㉖ something more positive by taking the stairs instead. ⑲facilitate /fə'sɪlɪteɪt/ vt. 以外 ㉖change...into... Many of us try to change bad habits quickly, and if we are not successful straight away㉗,we often become pessimistic㉘ and give up㉙.In fact, the most successful way to change is not suddenly, but over a period of time.As the Chinese philosopher Laozi wrote,“A journey of a thousand miles begins with㉚ a single step.” One step seems small, but it is essential. To reach the goal of change,a person must show some discipline㉛ and repeatedly take many small steps. After all㉜,it is not easy to break bad habits. not...but... 悲观的;悲观主义的 ㉙give up 放弃 ㉚begin with 以…… ㉛discipline /'dɪsəplɪn/ n. For young people, there is plenty of time to change bad habits. However, there is no “magic pill㉝” or delete㉞ button that will help you;you have to think about your bad habits and decide on㉟ some changes. You have the power to build㊱ a happy and healthy life full of good habits! ㉝pill /pɪl/ n.药丸;药片 ㉞delete /dɪ'liːt/ v.删去;删除 ㉟decide on 决定;选定 ㊱have the power to do sth. A case in point is the misunderstood overlap (交叠) between strength-based science and the research on narcissism (自恋). There is now convincing evidence to show that narcissism is on the rise, especially in our youth. Some researchers say that about 25% of young people show symptoms of narcissism. We are correct to be concerned about this phenomenon, but our fear that all kids are potential narcissists has caused an unhelpful reaction against approaches that seek to make our children and teens feel good about themselves. In my own research on strength-based parenting, it is common for people to wrongly think this approach to be the cause of narcissism. Their argument seems to be that a child who knows their strengths will automatically view themselves as better than everyone else. It is argued that the self-assurance that comes with identifying and using their positive qualities will make a child selfish and uncaring. Why does this occur? It's partly because more is known about narcissism than strengths. While strengths psychology has largely stayed within the limit of academic journals, research on narcissism has made its way into the mass media and our daily life. The New York Times noted that narcissism is a favored topic and that people everywhere are diagnosing others with it. The fear that a strength-based approach will cause narcissism also occurs because of our binary (非此即彼的) thinking. We mistakenly believe that one cannot be both confident and humble. Without confidence in their strengths, Gandhi and Mother Teresa couldn't have achieved so much, and yet modesty and selflessness are their qualities. When we assume that strength-focus is the same as self-focus, we fail to make the idea clear that people who know their strengths are, actually, more likely to be pro-social and ready to help others. It's easy to conclude that every young person is at risk of becoming a narcissist but I'd like to stand up for the thousands of young kids I have worked with who are caring, thoughtful and humble—even when they use their strengths. 2 3 1 4 1.Which of the following opinions may the writer agree with? A.To state all kids are potential narcissists is overstating the case. B.Strength-based parenting results in narcissism. C.It's unhelpful for us to make our children feel good about themselves. D.Children knowing their strengths tend to be more selfish and uncaring. 根据第三段中的“but our fear that all kids are potential narcissists has caused an unhelpful reaction”可以推知,作者认为不是所有的孩子都有成为自恋狂的可能,这样的说法是夸大其词。故选A项。 2 3 1 4 2.Why are teenagers' strengths often thought of as narcissism? A.Many people are diagnosed with narcissism by doctors. B.There is a shortage of narcissism in our common sense. C.Academic journals report more on narcissism. D.The general public has fewer approaches to strengths psychology. 2 3 1 4 3.What's the author's attitude toward young kids' strength-based approaches? A.Tolerant. B.Neutral. C.Supportive. D.Doubtful. 根据倒数第二段中的“we fail to make the idea clear that people who know their strengths are, actually, more likely to be pro-social and ready to help others”以及最后一段的内容可知,知道自己长处的孩子有很多优势,由此可推知,作者对基于优势的教育方式是支持的。故选C项。 2 3 1 4 4.What is a suitable title for the text? A.Teens' Narcissism Diagnosis B.Teens' Misunderstood Confidence C.Teens' Strength-Based Approach D.Teens' Psychology Research 答案:B 2 3 1 4 标题归纳题。 2 3 1 4 B For most people, the thought of having to watch themselves work out is not an attractive one.Yet as any gym-goer knows, there are always some people who like to enjoy their reflection in the floor-length mirrors. It is perhaps these particular keep-fit lovers who are most excited about the latest trend in home exercise—smart fitness mirrors. These are 180 cm or so tall, high-tech mirrors that have a computer which is connected to the Internet, and also work as a video screen. The idea is that people contact an online trainer, who then appears in the mirror along with their reflection. On the more advanced devices the mirror is equipped with cameras, speakers and numerous sensors (传感器) connected to AI, so the trainer can watch people's movements, and provide improvements and changes. On the simpler mirrors the video and sound are just one-way—people can see and hear the trainer, but not the other way around.Lessons are typically not live; instead, people just get into a library of online workout videos. But is there any actual advantage in being able to watch yourself work out? Colleen Logan, the US owner of both Nordic Track and ProForm, says, “Seeing themselves in the mirror allows the users to correct their form or position, so they get the best possible benefits of strength exercises and reduce mistakes that could lead to injuries.” However, Dr.Anthony Papathomas, a sports and fitness psychologist says there is value to this argument, but that he also has some concerns. He said,“How people who are not confident about their body image feel about the mirror gets me in a fret.It may be a problem for those new to exercise and looking to make a lifestyle change.Even for regular exercisers, there are many who experience body dysmorphia (变形) or eating disorders, and for them, seeing a reflection throughout their exercise might be troubling.” 5 6 7 8 5.What does paragraph 2 mainly tell us about smart fitness mirrors? A.Their target users. B.Their wide popularity. C.Their basic functions. D.Their complex structure. C。 5 6 7 8 6.What can be the benefit for exercisers from simpler fitness mirrors? A.Having live workout lessons. B.Exercising with other partners. C.Taking advantage of workout videos. D.Learning from some trainers at once. 根据第三段中“On the simpler mirrors the video and sound are just one-way—people can see and hear the trainer, but not the other way around.Lessons are typically not live; instead, people just get into a library of online workout videos.” C。 5 6 7 8 7.What does Logan think of the mirror? A.It makes mistakes sometimes. B.It could bring injuries to its users. C.It is necessary for strength exercises. D.It helps users exercise more properly. 根据第四段中Logan说的话“Seeing themselves in the mirror allows the users to correct their form or position, so they get the best possible benefits of strength exercises and reduce mistakes that could lead to injuries.” D。 5 6 7 8 8.Which of the following best explains the underlined phrase “in a fret” in the last paragraph? A.Excited. B.Worried. C.Satisfied. D.Shocked. 根据画线短语下文“It may be a problem for those new to exercise...seeing a reflection throughout their exercise might be troubling.” 1 2 3 4 Keeping your heart healthy is simple when you do enough exercise, stress less, monitor your weight and so on. 1 How can you put them into daily practice?
