But Clora Bryant played the trumpet, and reputation came slowly. Bryant, a barrier breaker who stood firm in her determination to be a respected jazz trumpet player despite the open sexism (性别歧视) that shadowed her, died on August 25, in 2019, in Los Angeles, when she was 92. Life as a jazz trumpeter was an uphill battle, said her son Darrin. “It was a man's world, and that made it hard for her. But that only fueled her fire, and made her more resolved.” Bryant played the trumpet with such passion and she became a mainstay in the growing jazz scene in the 1940s. Dizzy Gillespie once told The Times jazz critic Leonard Feather that Bryant was the most underrated (低估) trumpet player in L.A. But by 1992, she was living on social security, staying at a son's Long Beach, in California, apartment, and two of her trumpets were in a pawnshop (当铺). “A lot of clubs have closed,” she told The Times. “And how many female trumpet players do you see working?” Bryant and her brothers were raised by their father, a patient man who encouraged his children to think big. She wanted to be in the high school marching band, but Charles Bryant warned his daughter she'd likely face resistance. “But anything you want to do, I'm behind you,” she recalled. It was her father who encouraged her to do whatever she wanted to do that made her stronger and stronger. 2 3 1 4 1.What does the underlined word “resolved” in paragraph 1 probably mean? A.Adventurous. B.Unique. C.Emotional. D.Determined. 根据第一段中的“Bryant, a barrier breaker who stood firm in her determination to be a respected jazz trumpet player despite the open sexism that shadowed her”可知,虽然Bryant一辈子都被公然的性别歧视所困扰,但她决心成为一名受尊敬的爵士小号手。结合“It was a man's world, and that made it hard for her. But that only fueled her fire, and made her more resolved.” 2 3 1 4 2.Why is “social security” mentioned in paragraph 3? A.To show people's acts of kindness. B.To prove Bryant's struggle through life. C.To explain how Bryant earned her living. D.To stress the importance of the pawnshop. 根据第三段中的“But by 1992, she was living on social security, staying at a son's Long Beach, in California, apartment, and two of her trumpets were in a pawnshop.” 2 3 1 4 3.What's the key reason for Bryant's being underrated? A.The open sexism from society. B.The poor family background. C.The terrible financial situation. D.The mental pressure from colleagues. 根据第一段中的“Bryant, a barrier breaker who stood firm in her determination to be a respected jazz trumpet player despite the open sexism that shadowed her, died on August 25, in 2019, in Los Angeles, when she was 92. Life as a jazz trumpeter was an uphill battle, said her son Darrin. ‘It was a man's world, and that made it hard for her. But that only fueled her fire, and made her more resolved.’” 2 3 1 4 4.What played an important role for Bryant to stick to her dream? A.Her son's support. B.Her brothers' company. C.Her strict family education. D.Her father's encouragement. 根据最后一段中的“It was her father who encouraged her to do whatever she wanted to do that made her stronger and stronger.” 2 3 1 4 B In the summer of 1885, nine-year-old Joseph was very ill. He had been wounded by a sick dog that had rabies (狂犬病), a very dangerous disease. His parents were told that there was probably only one man who could save Joseph's life—Louis Pasteur. When Pasteur was a young boy in France, he spent many hours every day with the chemist (药剂师) who lived in his small town. At that time, the chemist had to make all the medicines himself. Young Louis enjoyed watching the chemist as he worked and helped those people who came to him each day. As a school boy, Pasteur worked slowly and carefully. At first, his teachers thought that young Louis might be a slow learner. Through elementary school, high school and college, Pasteur worked in the same thoughtful way. Then he became a college professor and a scientist, and he continued to work very carefully. Pasteur was studying about the germs (细菌) that cause rabies when Joseph became ill. In fact, Pasteur believed he had a medical treatment for rabies, but he had never given it to a person before. At first, Pasteur was afraid to treat Joseph, but the poor child was dying. Pasteur gave Joseph an inoculation (预防接种) every day for ten days. Slowly, the child became better. During his lifetime, Pasteur studied germs and learned how they cause diseases in animals and people. He developed vaccinations (疫苗) that prevent many of these diseases. On September 28, 1895, Louis Pasteur passed away at the age of 72. The work of this great man has been of great help to modern medicine.
