Part 1
Up until the 1980s, people in many countries regularly followed in their parents' footsteps① by working in the family business or joining the same profession② as them. You'd follow your father to sea, onto the farm or into the workshop③. You'd follow your mother into the kitchen or sewing room. In your grandparents' time, there was the prospect④ of doing the same job from graduation until retirement⑤. How times have changed! Most people now have no intention of⑥ following in their parents' footsteps or even staying at one job for very long.
①footstep/'fʊtstep/n.
follow in one's footsteps
②profession/prə'feʃən/n.
③workshop/'wɜːkʃɒp/n.
④prospect/'prɒspekt/n.
⑤retirement/rI'taIəmənt/n.
⑥have no intention of doing sth.
In fact⑦, planning to work in the same field or industry for your entire working life just isn't practical anymore⑧. One reason for this is technology. The skills you have now are unlikely to⑨ remain relevant⑩ and be enough to help you through your entire career. In fact, they will probably be out of date⑪ very soon. And then what will you do? Work hard? Win the lottery⑫? Hope for the best? You might be lucky. These strategies might bring you a nice, comfortable life: working at a job you like, earning a decent⑬ salary⑭ and retiring while you're still young and healthy. But most of us today have to look beyond the little box called “career”.
此句中you have now 是the skills的定语从句,省略了关系词that或which,关系词在从句中作have的宾语。
⑦in fact 事实上
⑧not...anymore 不再
⑨be unlikely to do sth.
⑩relevant /'reləvənt/adj.
⑪out of date 过时的
⑫lottery/'lɒtəri/n.
⑬decent/'diːsənt/adj.
⑭salary/'sæləri/n.
If you think you can work eight hours a day and build a career, think again. You might be able to keep your job if you finish what you are asked to do, but this is hardly a recipe⑮ for great career success. Instead, you'd better keep looking for smarter ways to do⑯ your work. You'll need to be a risk taker, an innovator⑰, a problem solver, and a hard worker. Keep doing this, and you can become an expert or a specialist⑱ in something one day. You have a chance to choose to build a career, rather than⑲ being told to stay or to go.
rather than...
⑮recipe n.
⑯the way to do sth.
⑰innovator /'InəveItə/n.
⑱specialist /'speʃəlIst/n.专家
⑲rather than 而不是
Jobs and occupations⑳ come and go at an amazing pace㉑ these days. If you think you can't be replaced by software, or your job can't be outsourced㉒ to some robots on the moon, you are wrong. What if your job disappears after working for 10 years in the field? You may have to go back㉓ to the classroom and be retrained㉔ in order to qualify㉕ to work in another field. In fact, in all likelihood㉖, you will have to do this multiple㉗ times. But you can be prepared for developments and changes before you are thrown out of a career. It is entirely your choice to learn, or to be forced to learn.
what if...
⑳occupation/ˌɒkjə'peIʃən/n.
㉑pace/peIs/n.
at an amazing pace以惊人的速度
㉒outsource /'aʊtsɔːs/vt.
㉓go back 回到
㉔retrain/ˌriː'treIn/vt.
㉕qualify/'kwɒlIfaI/vi.& vt.
qualify to do sth.
㉖likelihood /'laIklihʊd/n.
㉗multiple /'mʌltəpəl/adj.
In short㉘, if you want to succeed in㉙ a 21st century career, you will have to develop new essential㉚ skills. Lifetime security㉛ from one employer㉜ is no longer certain or even likely. The truth is that you are the boss of your career, and it is up to you to decide what you can do and how well you can do it.Are you ready for this?
前面的分句中含有that引导的表语从句;后面的分句中含有“it is up to sb. to do sth.”句型,意为“由某人决定做某事”;what you can do and how well you can do it是what引导的宾语从句,作decide的宾语,连接词what 在从句中作宾语,how 在从句中作状语。
㉚essential/I'senʃəl/adj.
㉛security/sI'kjʊərəti/n.
㉜employer/Im'plɔIə/n.

A
Career education is instruction intended to help young people identify, choose, and prepare for a career. Such instruction may focus on a person's role in work, leisure, or family life. Career education differs from vocational education, which is designed to teach specific occupational skills.
Career education includes the formal and informal learning that occurs in the family, in the community, and in schools. In schools, career education consists of instructive activities included in many courses. These activities are designed to improve the attitudes, knowledge, and skills important for work roles. Career education helps students develop self-understanding and use it to plan their education and working life.
A complete career education program in school begins in kindergarten and continues at least through high school. Many colleges and universities also offer career education through their counseling (咨询) programs. In kindergartens and elementary schools, youngsters learn about different types of work. In middle schools or junior high schools, children begin to explore the occupations and leisure activities that interest them most. In high schools, students get more specific information about occupations and life styles. They may be in classrooms, small groups, or individual sessions where they learn how to
make career decisions. They also should obtain the skills they need for further study or for a job after graduation. Counselors provide information on such matters as how to locate and apply for jobs and how to be successful in interviews. Teachers and counselors use a variety of methods to provide career education, including films about occupations or industries. Children may invite parents or other adults to come to school and describe their jobs. A student may accompany a worker on the job. Cooperative education combines classroom study with practical work experience.

The literary world has a new star.Novelist Abdulrazak Gurnah is this year's winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature in recognition of his “compassionate penetration (洞察力) of the effects of colonialism (殖民主义) and the fate of the refugee(难民)”.
Gurnah grew up in Zanzibar,an island off the coast of Tanzania. In 1964,Gurnah was forced to leave for England as a refugee, where he began to reflect on his experiences in a diary and then through stories.Through the years,he wrote 10 novels and stories that explore the suffering caused by war and colonialism.“The thing that motivated the whole experience of writing for me was this idea of losing your place in the world,” Gurnah told The New York Times.
His 1994 novel Paradise, which tells the story of a boy growing up in early 20th century Tanzania, marked his breakthrough as a novelist and won the Booker Prize.Afterlives, his most recent work, continues the narrative of Paradise and takes place during the period of German colonialism in Tanzania.
Before he retired,Gurnah,73,was a professor of English and Postcolonial Literatures at the University of Kent in England.Although Gurnah's first language is Swahili,he adopted English as his literary language. His writing often contains traces of Arabic,Swahili and German,as well.
Anders Olsson, the chair of the Nobel committee, said that Gurnah “is widely recognized as one of the world's more preeminent postcolonial writers”.
Ethiopian-American novelist Maaza Mengiste described Gurnah's writings as being “like a gentle blade (刀刃) slowly moving in”.“He has written works that are absolutely unfearing and yet at the same time completely compassionate and full of heart for people of East Africa,” Mengiste said.“He is writing stories that are often quiet stories of people who aren't heard, but there's an insistence there that we listen.”
