Most people are aware that alcohol affects the brain, can damage the liver and can affect a pregnant woman’s developing baby. But that’s not all the trouble it can cause.
“Because alcohol is water-soluble and spreads throughout the body, there’s not a single organ that’s not affected by heavy alcohol use,” says Dr. Attia. Regular drinking over time raises the risk of multiple cancers like head and neck cancer, liver cancer and breast cancer. These detrimental effects are just a sampling of how alcohol can harm the body. Actually, alcohol can contribute to 200-plus health conditions.
“One thing that most people don’t connect with alcohol is mental health,” says Dr. Attia. “People use alcohol to self-treat depression and anxiety symptoms. In the short term, it seems helpful. In the long term, it’s worsening the problem.” Alcohol can also counteract the effect of medications designed to treat anxiety and depression, she adds.
But wait, haven’t you read that alcohol, especially red wine, has some positive health benefits? “There’s a polyphenol (a type of plant compound) called resveratrol (白藜芦醇) in red wine that is beneficial,” says Dr. Attia. “It decreases inflammation in the epithelial cells that line the blood vessels. It penetrates the blood/ brain barrier and has protective effects. It reduces platelet aggregation and can prevent the formation of blood clots.”
But before you grab that bottle of cabernet, consider this: “These polyphenols can be found in other substances, like grapes, raspberries and peanuts, or by taking supplements,” says Dr. Attia. “So even if there is a benefit to red wine, you don’t need to drink red wine to get this benefit. Eat the grapes instead!”
As for the safe amount of alcohol, some guidelines suggest less is better, while the WHO claims there’s no safe amount. Dr. Attia agrees that any drinking is hazardous.
December can be a difficult time to suddenly stop drinking alcohol. In fact, overindulging over the holidays is one reason for the Dry January movement, which encourages people to give up alcohol for the entire month. But you don’t have to wait until January. You can change your drinking habits now!
4. What is implied in the first paragraph?
A. The known effects of alcohol are not very serious.
B. People are aware of all the harm alcohol can cause.
C Alcohol has more negative impacts than commonly known.
D. Alcohol’s harm to the brain and liver is overemphasized.
5. What does the underlined word “counteract” in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. replace B. strengthen C. remove D. reduce
6. What is the main function of resveratrol mentioned in the passage?
A To protect the blood/ brain barrier.
B. To prevent the appearance of blood clots.
C. To worsen the symptoms of depression.
D. To decrease the lining of blood vessels.
7. What will be talked about in the following part?
A. Ways to regulate drinking behaviour.
B. Reasons for a dry January movement.
C. Alcohol’s effects on social relationships.
D. Approaches to holding holiday celebrations.
C 5. D 6. B 7. A
由文章第一段“Most people are aware that alcohol affects the brain, can damage the liver and can affect a pregnant woman’s developing baby. But that’s not all the trouble it can cause. (大多数人都知道酒精会影响大脑,会损害肝脏,还会影响孕妇腹中胎儿的发育。但这还不是它所能造成的全部麻烦。)”可知,酒精的负面影响比通常所知的要多。故选C。
5题详解】
词句猜测题。由文章第三段中““People use alcohol to self-treat depression and anxiety symptoms. In the short term, it seems helpful. In the long term, it’s worsening the problem.” Alcohol can also counteract the effect of medications designed to treat anxiety and depression, she adds.
由文章第四段中““There’s a polyphenol (a type of plant compound) called resveratrol (白藜芦醇) in red wine that is beneficial,” says Dr. Attia. “It decreases inflammation in the epithelial cells that line the blood vessels. It penetrates the blood/ brain barrier and has protective effects. It reduces platelet aggregation and can prevent the formation of blood clots.” (“红葡萄酒中含有一种叫做白藜芦醇的多酚类物质(一种植物化合物),它是有益的,”Attia博士说。“它能减少血管内壁上皮细胞中的炎症。它能穿透血脑屏障,具有保护作用。它能减少血小板聚集,并可以防止血栓形成。”)”可知,白藜芦醇的主要作用是防止血栓的形成。故选B。
【7题详解】
推理判断题。由文章最后一段“December can be a difficult time to suddenly stop drinking alcohol. In fact, overindulging over the holidays is one reason for the Dry January movement, which encourages people to give up alcohol for the entire month. But you don’t have to wait until January. You can change your drinking habits now! (12月可能是一个很难突然戒酒的时间段。事实上,假期过度饮酒是“Dry January”运动兴起的原因之一,该运动鼓励人们在整个一月份戒酒。但你不必等到一月份。你现在就可以改变自己的饮酒习惯!)”可知,接下来会讨论调节饮酒行为的方法。故选A。
C
As China’s animated film blockbuster Ne Zha 2 breaks box office records and receives critical praise, it has been revealed that the voice of its villain is China’s so-called coolest grandpa. Actor and model Wang Deshun, 89, who plays Wuliang Xianweng in the hit animated production, is seen by many as a perfect match for the character, who initially appears amiable (和蔼可亲的) but is later revealed to be cruel and ambitious.
Born in Shenyang, in northeastern China’s Liaoning province, Wang worked as a tram conductor and factory worker before becoming a theatre actor aged 24. A quarter of a century later, he felt his acting career had hit a bottleneck, so he resigned and moved to Beijing with his wife and two children. He began working out so he could achieve accurate bodily expressions on the stage. At 65, Wang learned how to ride a horse. In 2015, at the age of 79, Wang walked the runaway shirtless during China Fashion Week, wowing many people online. When he reached 80, he received training from his daughter and became an amateur DJ. At 85, the veteran actor became China’s oldest person to receive a pilot’s licence.
Wang played roles in many classic Chinese films and TV dramas such as Chuang Guandong in 2008, Reign of Assassins in 2010, and 20 Once Again in 2015. Wang said it took him three days to dub the character Wuliang Xianweng in June 2022. The production team only provided the lines he needed to perform, and he dubbed the character without knowing any of the plot lines.
Despite being the voice for the antagonist (敌手) in Ne Zha 2, Wang was seen by some to be the main character Ne Zha. The brave and resilient character refused to submit to his fate, fighting stereotypes and injustice in the two films. Likewise, in real life, Wang has refused to be bound by social norms. “I do whatever I want to do. It is never too late,” he said.
8. Why is Wang Deshun called “China’s coolest grandpa”?
A. Because he played the villain in Ne Zha 2 in an outstanding way.
B. Because he kept challenging himself through diverse achievements.
C. Because he walked the runaway shirtless during China Fashion Week.
D. Because he became China’s oldest person to receive a pilot’s license.
9. Which of the following can best describe Wang Deshun’s personality?
A. Adventurous and curious. B. Amiable and ambitious.
C. Cautious and disciplined. D. Cruel and dedicated.
10. Why is Wang compared to the character Ne Zha?
A. Both show their ambition to break rules. B. Both are known for playing villain roles.
C. Both determine to submit to social norms. D. Both refuse to accept various stereotypes.
11. What can be a suitable title for the passage?
A. Ne Zha 2: A Villain Voiced by an 89-Year-Old Actor
B. A legendary life: From a Tram Conductor to a Theatre actor
C. Breaking Boundaries: The Unconventional Journey of Wang Deshun
D. Behind the scenes: The Voice Acting Journey of Ne Zha 2’s Antagonist

Before she goes to bed each night, Holly Wang logs on to DeepSeek for “therapy sessions”. Ever since January, when the amazing Chinese AI app was launched, the 28-year-old has brought her dilemmas and sorrows, including the recent death of her grandmother, to the chatbot. Its responses have resonated so deeply they have at times brought her to tears. “DeepSeek has been such an amazing counsellor. It has helped me look at things from different perspectives and does a better job than the paid counselling services I have tried,” says Holly.
From writing reports and Excel formulas to planning trips, workouts and learning new skills, AI apps have found their way into many people’s lives across the world. In China, though, young people like Holly have been looking to AI for something not typically expected of computing and algorithms — emotional support.
The first time she used DeepSeek, Holly asked it to write a tribute to her late grandmother. The app took all of five seconds to come up with a response, and it was so beautifully composed, stunning her. DeepSeek then gave a poetic explanation: “Remember that all these words that make you shiver merely echo those that have long existed in your soul. I am but the occasional valley you’ve passed through, and that allows you to hear the weight of your own voice.”
Reflecting on this exchange on Chinese social media app RedNote, Holly tells the BBC: “I don’t know why I teared up reading this. Perhaps because it’s been a long, long time since I received such comfort in real life. I have been so weighed down by distant dreams and the endlessness of work that I have long forgotten my own voice and soul. Thank you, AI.”
Holly rarely uses the other Chinese AI apps, “as they are not that great. DeepSeek can definitely outperform these apps in generating literary and creative content,” she says.
Nan Jia, who co-authored a paper on AI’s potential in offering emotional support, suggests that these chatbots can “help people feel heard” in ways fellow humans may not. “Friends and family may be quick to offer practical solutions or advice when people just want to feel heard and understood. AI appears to be better able to empathize than human experts also because they ‘hear’ everything we share, unlike humans to whom we sometimes ask, ‘Are you actually hearing me?’” adds Nan.
12. What is the main purpose of the passage?
A. To analyze the economic impact of DeepSeek’s success.
B. To show AI’s effectiveness in providing emotional support.
C. To criticize traditional counseling services’ shortcomings.
D. To compare various Chinese AI apps’ technical capabilities.
13. What did Holly initially ask DeepSeek to do?
A. Develop new creative writing skills.
B. Analyze her career development plan.
C. Help her tackle overwhelming work pressure.
D. Create a speech in memory of her grandmother.
14. What is the purpose of Holly using the RedNote according to the passage?
A. To share users’ emotional interactions with AI
B. To compare different AI applications’ performance
C. To showcase DeepSeek’s technical advantages
D. To promote DeepSeek’s counseling services
15. According to Nan Jia, why might AI be superior to humans in emotional support?
A. It provides faster and more practical solutions.
B. It records all user interactions more systematically.
C. It excels in identifying with humans by lending an ear.
D. It processes language more poetically and creatively.
B 13. D 14. A 15. C

On the other hand, hiring a virtual receptionist can reduce these costs as receptionists often work on a contract or freelance basis, offering payment flexibility.(传统的接待员通常伴随着与现场员工相关的工资、福利和开销成本。

故填with。
fresh willow branches,fireworks,firecrackers和other items是并列关系,应用连词and连接。故填and。
take turns doing sth. 故填using。
故填a。
故填when。
故填was included。

Recently our class had a heated discussion on whether it is worthwhile to explore the unknown. Some students think it is a waste of time and resources as the unknown may bring risks and uncertainties. However, others believe that exploring the unknown can lead to new discoveries, expand our knowledge, and bring about technological advancements.

Last week, frozen cookie dough (生面团) saved me from myself.
It all started when the new neighbor across the street backed a U-Haul truck up to his house, walked a Ping-Pong table down the ramp and left it on his front lawn. He is a college student, and if you live in a college town, you understand that a Ping-Pong table on a front lawn is not just a Ping-Pong table. It’s a beer-pong table.
I wouldn’t know the first thing about it if I hadn’t spent years living on the other side of town, closer to the university, where beer-pong tables could be seen here and there in the front yards. At the time, my husband and I shared a property line with 27 students, the sounds of beer pong extending late into the night and early into the morning. These students embraced beer pong as a lifestyle.
The best we could do was move to a quieter part of town, which we did at great expense. And now, here was this guy, leaving a new beer-pong table within full view of my new kitchen window.
I come from a long line of angry folks, and I have always hoped that I’d be the one to change. I have tried various means, which have helped soften the rage (怒火) I inherited, but it’s still in there, like lava bubbling inside a dormant (休眠的) volcano.
Occasionally, the lava boils over and I say something I regret. The best way I know to repair the damage is with food. I’ve seen the way as a simple gift, such as a loaf of banana bread, can open the door of a heart that’s hurt, even if only a little.
I walked right up to the student’s house, past that stupid table, knocked on the door and told him that it had to go. I expected him to feel sorry, apologize and agree. Instead, he returned my rage in kind.
“Who the hell are you?” he asked. “And what gives you the right to make such a ridiculous demand?”
I felt a pull on my arm: my husband. He’d seen the U-Haul and the table, and had predicted I’d be on the war path. As he pulled me away, I shouted at the kid and told him this wasn’t over.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
I was full of rage the rest of the day, but the next morning, I awoke, full of shame.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
The student opened the door and looked down at the cookies on the plate.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
I was full of rage the rest of the day, but the next morning, I awoke, full of shame. I realized I had overreacted. Remembering that food could be a way to mend fences, I decided to bake some cookies. I made the cookie dough from the frozen one I had, shaping it into little balls and putting them in the oven. When they were done, the sweet smell filled the kitchen. Then I knocked on the neighbor’s door.
The student opened the door and looked down at the cookies on the plate. His eyes widened in surprise. I took a deep breath and said, “I’m sorry for my outburst yesterday. I hope you can accept these cookies as a peace offering.” He was a bit taken aback at first, but then a smile spread across his face. “No, I should be the one to apologize. I was rude too,” he replied. We chatted for a while, and he told me he didn’t even know how to play beer-pong. In the end, he agreed to move the table to the backyard, and we parted as friends.

C. Alcohol has more negative impacts than commonly known.

A Adventurous and curious.

13 What did Holly initially ask DeepSeek to do?
A. Develop new creative writing skills.
B. Analyze her career development plan.
C. Help her tackle overwhelming work pressure.
D. Create a speech in memory of her grandmother.
14. What is the purpose of Holly using the RedNote according to the passage?
A. To share users’ emotional interactions with AI
B. To compare different AI applications’ performance
C. To showcase DeepSeek’s technical advantages
D. To promote DeepSeek’s counseling services
15. According to Nan Jia, why might AI be superior to humans in emotional support?
A. It provides faster and more practical solutions.
B. It records all user interactions more systematically.
C. It excels in identifying with humans by lending an ear.
D. It processes language more poetically and creatively.

注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
I was full of rage the rest of the day, but the next morning, I awoke, full of shame.
