The last time a female British scientist won the Nobel Prize for chemistry was in1964. Her name was Dorothy Crowfoot Hodgkin. 21 her, only two women had won the Chemistry prize: Marie Curie in 1911, and her daughter Irene Joliot-Curie in 1935.
Hodgkin was born in Cairo, Egypt in 1910, as the eldest of four daughters of John Crowfoot and his wife Molly. The girls were sent back to England when the First World War broke out. By the time she was 11 years old, Dorothy’s schooling had been a bit hit and miss. But she had spent a term 22 (learn) to grow crystals (晶体), and chemistry had enthralled her. At the Sir John Leman School, she had to fight to be allowed to take chemistry, which was seen as a “boys’ subject.” But she did well, and in 1928 she entered Somerville College, Oxford Universiy, to do a chemistry degree.
At every stage her parents, particularly her mother, encouraged her ambitions. No one ever said to her, as they did to other clever girls at the time, that 23 she was too brainy she’d never get a husband. It was in a book her mother gave her 24 Dorothy learned about the technique of X-ray crystallography (X射线晶体学). It’s a way of working out 25 a complex molecule is arranged in three dimensions. She immediately decided that was 26 she wanted to do.
Hodgkin was the most important leader and innovator in her field. The impact of her work led to her becoming the only female British scientist 27 (win) a Nobel Prize so far. The 1964 award recognised her work in discovering the 3D shapes of penicillin (盘尼西林) and vitamin B12.
Accurate knowledge of the shape of penicillin was very important in understanding how it 28 overcome bacterial infections. Her work is still of great significance in the development of new antibiotics. They are currently badly needed as some bacteria 29 (develop) resistance to existing drugs.
Hodgkin’s work also had a huge impact on the treatment of diabetes. In 1969, after 35 years of hard work, she figured out the 3D shape of the insulin (胰岛素) molecule. Insulin is an important hormone (激素) used by the body to process sugars in food. Understanding 30 structure is significant for human diabetes control.
Hodgkin was not only an exceptional scientist but also was, and continues to be, an inspirational role model to generations of researchers, both male and female.

The most difficult part of a Western-Chinese marriage is the cultural differences. The traditional Chinese culture is established on the Confucian philosophy, while the western culture is based on ancient Greek 31 . Cultural differences exist in almost every aspect and therefore 32 also on relationships and marriage.
From the traditional Chinese point of view, marriage is a relationship 33 many aspects such as family, friends and relatives, while from the Western point of view, marriage is a 34 signed between two people that is based on trust and love. Furthermore, Westerners’ marriages 35 more the independence and privacy of the couple.
That is why Westerners sometimes cannot understand why we Chinese need to our relatives if we are asked to do so. Chinese need to maintain their “face” and “relations”. Even in relationship, we are somehow still 36 to our family and relatives. Our partner has to understand it and at least does not 37 it.
It is not easy to maintain Chinese-Western relationship. Cultural differences may result in 38 . Young Asian ladies are fond of western men because they believe they are more gentlemanly and in addition their appearances are more 39 . Western men may think Chinese ladies are gentler and more feminine.
My suggestion for the cross-culture relationship is always trying to put yourself in other’s shoes: accepting rather than changing; always respecting your partner but clarifying your own red lines; showing your interest in his/her different culture and carefully commenting on it and so on.
There are more and more cross-culture marriages 40 recently. I would like to take this chance to sincerely wish them the very best in their love journeys.
III. Reading Comprehension (45分)
Section A
Directions: For each blank in the following passage there are four words or phrases marked A. B.C and D. Fill in each blank with the word or phrase that best fits the context
People often say that “failure is the mother of success.” This cliché (陈词滥调) might have some truth to it, but it 41 tells us how to actually turn a loss into a win, says Emmanuel Manalo, a professor of educational psychology at Kyoto University in Japan. As a result, he says, “we know we shouldn’t give up when we fail—but 42 , we do.”
Manalo and Manu Kapur, a professor of learning sciences at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich, put together a special issue of the journal Thinking Skills and Creativity last December on 43 failure. The issue’s 15 studies provide teachers and educational researchers with a guide for 44 success. One study reported, for example, that the sooner and more often students fail at a task, such as building a robot, the sooner they can 45 and improve. Another confirmed that feedback on failures is most 46 when the giver comes across as caring, and the receiver is prepared to weather negative emotions.
Manalo and his co-authors also contributed their own study focused on overcoming one fundamental, everyday form of failure: not 47 a task. They asked 131 undergraduates to write an essay about their school experiences. Half of the students received 48 for structuring their writing, and half were left to their own devices. All, however, were 49 prior to finishing. Afterward the researchers found that those in the structured group were more motivated to complete their essays, compared with those who lacked guidance—even if the latter were 50 to being done. Knowing how to finish, 51 , was more important than being close to finishing.
The researchers dubbed this finding “the Hemingway effect,” for the author’s self-reported 52 to stop writing only when he knew what would happen next in the story—so as to avoid writer’s block when he returned to the page. Manalo believes that learning how to fail temporarily can help people avoid becoming 53 failures at many tasks, such as completing an essay, learning a language or inventing a new technology.
Demystifying failure and teaching students not to 54 it make goals more attainable, says Stephanie Couch, executive director of the Lemelson-MIT Program, a nonprofit organization dedicated to developing and supporting inventors. Couch, whose work was also featured in the special issue, 55 that we “should really be thinking of failure as part of a process of going forward toward success.”

My aunt Edith was a widow of 50, working as a secretary, when doctors discovered she had got what was then thought to be a very serious heart illness.
Aunt Edith didn’t accept defeat easily. She began studying medical reports in library and found an article in a magazine about a well-known heart doctor, Dr. Michael Debakey, of Houston, Texas. He had saved the life of someone with the same illness. The article said Dr. Debakey’s fees were very high; Aunt Edith couldn’t possibly pay them. But could he tell her of someone whose fee she could pay?
So Aunt Edith wrote to him. She simply listed her reasons for wanting to live: her three children, who would be on their own in three or four years and among them a little girl who always dreamed of traveling and seeing the world. There wasn’t a word of self-pity -- only warmth and humor and the joy of living. She mailed the letter, not really expecting an answer.
A few days later, my doorbell rang. Aunt Edith didn’t wait to come in; she stood in the hall and read aloud:
Your beautiful letter moved me very deeply. If you can come to Houston, there will be no charge for either the hospital or the operation.
Signed: Michael Debakey
That was seven years ago. Since then, Aunt Edith has been around the world. Her three children are happily married. For her age, she is one of the youngest, most alive people I know.

Each one of us shares this planet with seven billion other individuals. And we all need transportation. The majority of cars, motorcycles, boats and planes cause pollution. They are also noisy. This is a serious problem in many cities. So inventors are coming up with innovative ideas to try to reduce the pollution and noise.
By Land
In many cities around the world, motorcycles are becoming increasingly popular. Currently, Vietnam has around 33 million motorcycles. China has almost 120 million. The convenience of these motorcycles comes at a cost. Air pollution is a growing problem. In large cities, people often complain it is difficult to breathe. They also complain about the noise.
To solve these problems, a U.S. company designed an environmentally friendly motorcycle. It uses electricity as fuel. You can drive it for 40 miles (64 kilometers) before recharging the battery. It is also quiet and fast-60 miles (96 kilometers) per hour. This makes it a good choice for getting around a city.
By Water
The Italian city of Venice is a city with only a few roads. There are no cars in the city center. Instead of cars, water taxis and buses carry people along the city’s canals. The engines of these boats are simple and cheap. However, they cause pollution, particularly to the water. This causes damage to the city’s buildings.
English mechanics Dick Strawbridge and Jem Stans designed a solar-powered water taxi. The solar panels charge three electric batteries. These, in turn, provide power to the engine. The water taxi can carry six passengers. It can run for a day. In the future, solar taxis could be an alternative to Venice’s current taxis.
By Air
Designing an environmentally friendly airplane is a real challenge. Planes use an enormous amount of jet fuel. This means they cause significant air pollution, and they are very noisy. Some major airplane manufacturers have started to address the problems. They are using cleaner fuels, for example. However, Swiss engineers have gone one step further. They developed a solar airplane — the Solar Impulse. Solar panels cover its wings. These panels provide power to four electric motors and batteries. The batteries allow the plane to fly at night. This plane holds the world record for the longest solar-powered flight — 985 miles (1541 kilometers) from Arizona to Texas in the United States.
60.What do the three innovative ideas proposed have in common?
A.They aim to solve traffic problems in big cities.
B.They use cleaner energy and cause less pollution.
C.They aim to change traditional way of transporting goods.
D.They are good will of developed countries to help developing countries.
61.Which of the following statements is TRUE?
A.China owns the largest number of motorcycles.
B.There are no cars in the center of Venice city.
C.Solar-powered water taxi can run for a day with one battery at work.
D.The newly designed motorcycle can drive 60 miles after being charged.
62.According to the passage, the distinguished merit of Solar Impulse is ________.
A.lighter wings B.less noise
C.powerful batteries D.longest solar panels
C
We are the sum of our actions. I believe that the actions you take determine who you are. But, you say, had an abusive father/mother, I was poor growing up, just wasn’t born smart, I have a disease... All of these things do not make you who you are. They only broaden your knowledge or experience. They are things that happen to you, circumstances. You are not the sum of your circumstances, but of your “action” to them.
This is why rich kids become drug addicts or wife beaters; kids from ghetto (贫民窟) become doctors or loving fathers, and everything in between. All walks of life produce all walks of life. So, it is all about your own choices/reactions/actions/behavior, Every human being has within them a mechanism that guides their actions. The more you rebel against your inner guide, the more you tune your selective hearing to the “me” channel, the father down the “bad” side of the scale you will slide. On the other hand, if you not only listen to but act upon, the “universal” channel, the farther up the “good” side of the scale you will fly.
Even psychiatrists have in recent years discovered that in order to change thinking, a person must frst change behavior. At first thought, it would seem the opposite is true, it is not. We all have the same range of human emotions. When we feel slighted (被看轻), it sounds in our heads like: “I want to slap them, curse them, get even, and cause them the same pain they caused me. Acting upon these thoughts perpetuates (使继续) cycles of abuse, addiction, and pain. It’s when you choose not to act upon these thoughts, and instead, forgive and heal, that your thoughts and perceptions will start to change also. You change because right actions produce right results. You are choosing to heal properly by forgiving, and accepting life and mankind as it is, and in turn yourself as you are, which is the only way to have peace, joy, and true happiness.
I will admit that if you have a parent who accepts you as a whole person, inclusive of “good and bad”, you may have an edge or jumpstart (快速启动) on understanding life, yourself, and others. If you don’t, it may just take you longer to understand, accept, and act on it. Either way, who you are is determined by you, and you are determined by your actions. So, tune in everybody, to that universal channel, and act right!
63.The author argues that an abusive parent a person once had ________.
A.affects the reaction he will take in different circumstances
B.prevents him from understanding life
C.has little to do with what kind of person he is
D.determines the tough circumstances he lives in
64.By saying “All walks of life produce all walks of life”, the author means that ________.
A.poor children are more likely to succeed in their work
B.the occupation a person engages in affects his personality
C.wealthy children tend to be spoiled by their parents
D.circumstances contribute little to a person’s future success
65.The example of what we think and do when we feel slighted is given to show that ________.
A.our behavior is guided by our thought B.human beings share similar emotions
C.we have to cultivate our behavior first D.it’s wrong to act upon your thoughts
66.The passage is intended to show us that ________.
A.we should accept life and mankind as it is
B.everyone is determined by what he does
C.understanding life promotes right action
D.it is better to have a parent who accepts both your “good and bad”

Herbal medicine (草药), which has been used for medicinal purposes, is the use of plants to treat diseases. Many herbalists use the entire plant, from the flowers, stems, leaves, and roots, in the form of everything from teas to pills. These plants contain natural, chemical things that can treat the body for a variety of diseases— such as allergies, asthma, rheumatoid arthritis, migraine, chronic fatigue, and cancer, among others.
Nowadays an increasing number of people prefer to adopt these plants to treat their diseases because compared with chemical medicine, herbal medicine has its own advantages. Herbal medicine and remedies (治疗) are more effective than chemical medicine for certain diseases. The chemical medicine given by a chemist could have certain negative side effects. However, many of the herbal medicine and remedies do not have negative side effects. If any, they are softer than chemical medicine. Obesity is the cause of many of the health problems. Herbal medicine can help weight-loss more effectively and improve overall health.
However, the cure using herbal medicine and supplements (营养品) would take some time, and therefore people are supposed to possess enough patience. Worse still, herbal medicine contains a variety of ingredients (成分) and people have to be sure that their body agrees with the ingredients and that it is not allergic (过敏的).
When used correctly and directed by doctors, herbs can help treat a variety of diseases. But keep in mind that the herbal medicine industry is not regulated, so herbal products are often misleading and may contain additives (添加剂) and that are not listed on the label (标签). Some herbs may cause allergic reactions or interact with other drugs, and some are poisonous if used improperly or at high doses (剂量). Taking herbs on your own increases your risk.

M: Why? It is a hot major, isn’t it? China is in great need of this kind of talents. And your daughter is studying in such a famous university. She is sure to find a good job with her excellent education background.
W: You know the world is under the economy crisis, commerce is not hot any more. I’d rather she majored in medicine or education and could become a doctor or a teacher.
M: These sorts of work do provide a guarantee, but don’t you think they are too boring for young people? Every day is the same, the people around you are similar, and you will not have any chance to experience a new and active life style.

II. Grammar and Vocabulary (20分)
Section A
Directions: After reading the passage below, fill in the blanks to make the passage coherent and grammatically correct. For the blanks with a given word, fill in each blank with the proper form of the given word; for the other
blanks, use one word that best fits each blank.

A. undoubtedly无疑地;B. vividly生动地;C. hardly几乎不;D. intentionally故意地。
A. in reality事实上;B. by contrast相比之下;C. with question带着疑问;D. after all毕竟。 故选A。
A. running into撞上、遭遇;B. accounting for解释、占比;C. contributing to有助于;D. benefiting from受益于。根据下文“The issue’s 15 studies provide teachers and educational researchers with a guide(该问题的15项研究为教师和教育研究人员提供了指南)”并结合上文“how to actually turn a loss into a win”可知,这个特刊是从失败中“受益”的特刊,所以此处在介词on后用benefiting from表示“受益于”符合语境。故选D。
A. celebrating庆祝;B. evaluating评估;C. achieving实现;D. predicting预测。
A. move forward前进、进步;B. stand by袖手旁观;C. dash backward落后;D. run away跑开、逃走。 故选A。

Directions: Read the following three passages. Each passage is followed by several questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. Choose the one that fits best according to the information given in the passage you have just read.
A
My aunt Edith was a widow of 50, working as a secretary, when doctors discovered she had got what was then thought to be a very serious heart illness.

B.she didn’t know the way to Houston
C.she didn’t believe in him
D.she wanted to get some help from him
58.In fact, Aunt Edith’s letter to Dr. Debakey was full of .
A.courage B.illness
C.pity D.sadness
59.After reading Dr. Debakey’s letter, Aunt Edith felt .

B
根据第一段“And we all need transportation. The majority of cars, motorcycles, boats and planes cause pollution. They are also noisy. This is a serious problem in many cities. So inventors are coming up with innovative ideas to try to reduce the pollution and noise.(我们都需要交通工具。大多数汽车、摩托车、船和飞机造成污染。它们也很吵。这在许多城市都是一个严重的问题。因此,发明家们想出了创新的想法,试图减少污染和噪音)”,By Land下第二段的“It uses electricity as fuel. (它使用电力作为燃料)”,By Water下第二段的“The solar panels charge three electric batteries. These, in turn, provide power to the engine.(太阳能电池板为三个电池充电。这些反过来又为发动机提供动力)”和By Air下的“Some major airplane manufacturers have started to address the problems. They are using cleaner fuels, for example. (一些主要的飞机制造商已经开始着手解决这些问题。例如,他们正在使用更清洁的燃料)”可知,提出的三个创新想法,它们使用更清洁的能源,造成更少的污染。故选B项。
61.细节理解题。根据小标题By Water下第一段的“The Italian city of Venice is a city with only a few roads. There are no cars in the city center.(意大利城市威尼斯是一个只有几条道路的城市。市中心没有汽车)”可知,威尼斯市中心没有汽车,B项正确。故选B项。
62.推理判断题。根据最后一段“They developed a solar airplane — the Solar Impulse. Solar panels cover its wings. These panels provide power to four electric motors and batteries. The batteries allow the plane to fly at night. This plane holds the world record for the longest solar-powered flight—985 miles (1541 kilometers) from Arizona to Texas in the United States.(他们开发了一架太阳能飞机——“阳光动力号”。太阳能电池板覆盖着它的翅膀。这些面板为四个电动机和电池提供电力。电池使飞机能在夜间飞行。这架飞机保持着最长太阳能飞行的世界纪录——从美国亚利桑那州到德克萨斯州,飞行了985英里(1541公里))”可推知,阳光动力号的电池使飞机能在夜间飞行一整夜,所以它有强大的电池。故选C项。
根据第一段“But, you say, had an abusive father/mother, I was poor growing up, just wasn’t born smart, I have a disease... All of these things do not make you who you are. They only broaden your knowledge or experience. They are things that happen to you, circumstances. You are not the sum of your circumstances, but of your “action” to them.(但是,你说,我有一个虐待我的父亲/母亲,我很穷,只是不是天生聪明,我有疾病……所有这些都不能决定你是谁。它们只会拓宽你的知识和经验。它们是发生在你身上的事情,环境。你不是环境的总和,而是你对环境的“行动”的总和)”可知,作者认为,一个人曾经的虐待父母与他是什么样的人没有什么关系。故选C。
64.句意猜测题。根据划线词上文“This is why rich kids become drug addicts or wife beaters; kids from ghetto (贫民窟) become doctors or loving fathers, and everything in between.”
根据倒数第二段“When we feel slighted (被看轻), it sounds in our heads like: “I want to slap them, curse them, get even, and cause them the same pain they caused me. Acting upon these thoughts perpetuates (使继续) cycles of abuse, addiction, and pain. It’s when you choose not to act upon these thoughts, and instead, forgive and heal, that your thoughts and perceptions will start to change also. You change because right actions produce right results. You are choosing to heal properly by forgiving, and accepting life and mankind as it is, and in turn yourself as you are, which is the only way to have peace, joy, and true happiness.(当我们感到被轻视时,我们的脑海里就会响起这样的声音:“我想扇他们一巴掌,诅咒他们,报复他们,让他们尝尝他们给我带来的痛苦。”
根据第一段“We are the sum of our actions. I believe that the actions you take determine who you are.(我们是我们行动的总和。我相信你的行为决定了你是谁)”结合文章主要论述了人的行为决定自己是一个怎样的人,而不是周围的环境,要改变思维,一个人必须首先改变行为。可知,文章目的是告诉我们,每个人都是由他的行为决定的。故选B。

71.Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main point(s) of the passage in NO MORE THAN 60 WORDS. Use your own words as far as possible.

Please don’t hesitate to contact us if you need more/further information about the application process。

The system is easy to operate and fit for various occasions such as lectures and presentations.
表示“这个系统”名词短语为the system,作主语;表示“这个系统操作简便”用固定句式“主语+be adj. to do”,表达为the system is easy to operate;表示“适用于……”可用固定搭配be fit for…;“各种场合”为名词短语various occasions;表示“讲座,推介会等”为介词短语such as lectures and presentations。 The system is easy to operate and fit for various occasions such as lectures and presentations。
(inform)
Mark, a scientist with a growing reputation, was invited to deliver a speech to the freshmen of our school, aiming to inform young people better about the rapidly changing world.
分析所给中文句子,Mark为本句主语,“一位名声越来越大的科学家”作插入语,译为“a scientist with a growing reputation”,“受邀”作谓语,用动词invite,和主语为被动关系,描述已发生的事,用一般过去时,译为“was invited”,“给我校新生发表演说”为主语补足语,译为“to deliver a speech to the freshmen of our school”,“旨在”用动词短语aim to,和逻辑主语之间是现在分词形式,译为“aiming to”,“帮助年轻人更了解日新月异的世界”,“了解”根据题干要求用inform,所以译为“inform young people better about the rapidly changing world”。 Mark, a scientist with a growing reputation, was invited to deliver a speech to the freshmen of our school, aiming to inform young people better about the rapidly changing world.

Dear Mr. Li,
I’m Li Hua, a junior student in our school. Hearing our school decides to hold the annual Sports Festival, I’m so thrilled. Here are some suggestions.
First, I suggest including a variety of sports events that cater to different interests and skill levels. This would encourage more students to participate and enjoy the festival. Additionally, I propose that we organize workshops or seminars on sports safety and health, as these are crucial aspects of sports participation that are often overlooked.
The reasons for these suggestions are as follows. For one thing, by offering a diverse range of sports events, we can ensure that every student has the chance to do their preferred sport and feel included. For another, emphasizing sports safety and health will help create a safer environment for all participants and prevent potential injuries.
Thank you for considering my suggestions.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua
