Q: Hemingway was trying to create a heroic character based on his life in The Old Man and Sea. Then why would he give Santiago so many negative feelings which are “not so hero”?
1. The author tends to tell us how bad the situation was.
2. Despite all those negative feelings (fear, regret, doubt) and the desperate conditions, the old man still moved forward and struggled to fight against the destiny. What he did, instead of what thought, made him a hero.
3. the old man has all those negative feelings like a normal person, so everyone has the potential to be a hero.
