There’s an old saying that an elephant never forgets. And there is a lot of truth in that. Facts show that elephants remember watering holes that they have visited years ago and even other elephants that they have not seen in a long time. A new study shows that elephants can remember the scent (气味) of their previous caregivers.
The study aimed to see if elephants would be able to recall these humans that they interacted with. The study was conducted at Lower Saxony’s Serengeti Park in Hodenhagen, Germany. The subjects, Bibi and Panya, two female Asian elephants, had moved to the wildlife park from a zoo in Berlin about 13 years before the study. They had no contact with their previous zoo keepers. The researchers contacted the elephant’s three previous male zoo keepers in the Berlin zoo and asked them to participate by wearing T-shirts for eight hours, which would be used for scent stimulus (刺激). In addition, the men were recorded saying short sentences and they were photographed.
In the experiment, the researchers set up two pieces of equipment that were next to each other outside the enclosure (围场). On one piece of equipment, stimulus was presented from a previous caregiver and on the other, stimulus from an unknown person was shown. The elephants could not reach the equipment with their trunks but they repeatedly tried to. The behavior of the elephants was filmed. The researchers believed that Bibi and Panya would reach out more often to the stimuli of their previous keepers.
While more research is needed with a larger number of test subjects to confirm the results, this is still a very important study for zoos around the world. A stable relationship (关系) between elephants and humans is important for the health of elephants.
28. What can we know about elephants from paragraph 1?
A. They have strong feelings. B. They have a special sense of smell.
C. They have sharp sight. D. They have a very good memory.
29. What were the previous zoo keepers asked to do?
A. Visit the two elephants often. B. Wear T-shirts for eight hours.
C. Talk about the two elephants. D. Offer pictures with elephants.
30. What did the elephants reach with their trunks in the experiment?
A. The T-shirt from an unknown person. B. The researchers taking pictures.
C. The T-shirt from a previous zoo keeper. D. The former zoo keeper standing by.
31. What can be inferred about the study from the last paragraph?
A. It is limiting. B. It is challenging. C. It is creative. D. It is accessible.

People are less likely to yawn (打哈欠) when others do as they get older, a study has found. Contagious (传染的) yawning is related more closely to a person’s age than tiredness and energy levels, US-based scientists said. Researchers are now looking at whether to catch yawns from other people is a born ability, with the hope of helping treat some mental health disorders.
People with some mental illnesses are reportedly less able to catch yawns, researchers said, so understanding the genes that are connected with contagious yawning could open new paths for treatment. In the study, published in the journal Plos One, 328 participants were shown a three-minute video showing other people yawning. Each participant had to click a button every time they yawned. Overall, 68 percent of the participants yawned. Of those, 82 percent of people aged under 25 yawned, compared with 60 percent of people aged between 25 and 49, and 41 percent of people aged over 50.
Dr Elizabeth Cirulli, assistant professor of medicine at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina, led the study. She said, “This is the first study to look at a large number of factors. It is the largest study, when it comes to the number of people participating, till now.” She said she did not know why contagious yawning reduced with age.
Dr Cirulli added that although age was the most important predictor(预测器) of contagious yawning, only 8% of the change in whether or not a participant yawned was explained by their age.“Most of change in the contagious yawning reaction was just not explained,” said Dr Cirulli.
Robert R Provine, professor of psychology at the University of Maryland in Baltimore County, said the study was “special” as it was the first time a link between ageing and contagious yawning had been shown. Prof Provine said the findings could help to understand why laughing and coughing were so contagious. He added, “Contagious acts such as yawning and laughing remind us that we are often mindless to control our behaviour.”
32. Why do the researchers carry out studies on yawning?
A. To stop yawning from spreading. B. To find out yawning is a born activity.
C. To deal with some mental illnesses. D. To help prevent people from yawning.
33. What can we learn from the study on yawning?
A. The study lasted for 3 minutes.
B. Age has the most important influence on contagious yawning.
C. People with mental disease are more likely to yawn when others do.
D. A 15-year-old boy is more likely to yawn than a 50-year-old man.
34. Which of the following is Professor Provine’s opinion?
A The study is so far the largest one as for the number of people participating.
B. Aging and contagious yawning are closely related.
C. People are often influenced by contagious acts without knowing it.
D. Factors besides age also have an effect on contagious yawning.
35. What is the best title of the passage?
A. New paths for treatment of mental disorders.
B. Ageing and contagious yawning.
C. Influences of contagious yawning on people.
D. Opinions of professors on contagious yawning.

第二节 (满分25分)
67. 阅读下面材料, 根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段, 使之构成一篇完整的短文。
A couple of months before I became a high school senior, my parents gave me the greatest gift any teenage boy could ask for: a cellphone. I lived on that phone all summer with my face buried in its screen. I ignored my family and my surroundings. Being connected was more important than being present.
So, you can imagine my displeasure when I learned what my dad had planned for our family vacation that year. “This year,” my dad said, “we’ll be doing something special. We’re going camping!” His excitement was met with a disappointed sigh. It wasn’t my dream vacation because mind was on my phone. I was so buried in the screen, in fact, that the first time I can remember truly looking up was when we drove across a bridge on the way to our campsite.
I stared out the window and saw redwoods towering above us. I saw a road stretching out like a ribbon. The air blowing into the car from the open windows was hot. But none of that mattered to me. The reason I had looked up was for something far more serious: my phone no longer had service.
The last hour of the drive was increasingly tense. My dad announced that he had chosen a campsite that had no cell service, and that my phone would be useless until we returned home. I would be trapped in the forest for four days with no way to contact the outside world! I went through the full cycle of teenage emotions during the first day of the trip. I raged. I bargained. I begged. I flip-flopped (转变) from a depressive state to anger and back.
I went to bed angrily that night. But when I awoke in the morning, something had changed.
1. 续写词数应为150词左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Instead of burying myself in my phone, I focused on something else: my surroundings.

【详解】M: Many people in the USA are really dependent on their cars to go to work or school. In fact, most American workers spend an hour driving to work each day. In order to drive in the USA, you have to go to your local Department of Motor Vehicles first, and take a written test to get your learner’s permit. If you pass this test, you can practice driving and then you can pass a road test and get your license. To prepare for the road test, you can take classes at a driving school. If you cannot, you can practice driving by yourself. If you are caught driving with only a learner’s permit, you may get into trouble with the law. Once you get your driver’s license in one state, you can drive in all of the states in America. Wherever you drive, you will see signs posted along the road indicating the speed limit. The local police use special equipment to test your speed. If they find you are speeding or driving over the speed limit, the police can stop you and give you a ticket.

A. The T-shirt from an unknown person. B. The researchers taking pictures.
C. The T-shirt from a previous zoo keeper. D. The former zoo keeper standing by.

A. The study is so far the largest one as for the number of people participating.
【答案】32. C 33. D 34. C 35. B

【34题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“He added, “Contagious acts such as yawning and laughing remind us that we are often mindless to control our behaviour.”(他补充说:“打哈欠和大笑等传染性行为提醒我们,我们经常无意识地控制自己的行为。”)”可知,人们经常在不知情的情况下受到传染性行为的影响,故选C。
【35题详解】

Recently, our school has established a Chinese painting class specifically for exchange students. The aim of this class is to introduce international students to the rich cultural heritage of Chinese art and to foster cross cultural exchange.
The curriculum includes various traditional Chinese painting techniques such as ink wash painting and the use of traditional brushes and rice paper. Exchange students will learn to paint classic subjects like landscapes and bamboo, gaining hands-on experience in this ancient art form.
This initiative is significant as it not only provides exchange students with a unique cultural experience but also promotes mutual appreciation. By participating in this class, they can develop a deeper understanding of Chinese culture and build lasting friendships with their peers.

1. 续写词数应为150词左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Instead of burying myself in my phone, I focused on something else: my surroundings.

【答案】
Instead of burying myself in my phone, I focused on something else: my surroundings. I let the noise of the wilderness wash over me, animals and bugs creating a ruckus that was both loud and serene at the same time. My anger turned to peace, then little interest and, finally, excitement. Standing on the high campsite, I felt the weight of stress melt from my shoulders as I viewed the vast expanse that unfolded below me. The sight that met my startled eyes nearly took my breath away. For the first time, I thought camping in a place that had no cell service might not be so bad.
The next four days passed in a flash with many fun activities. I hiked. I swam. I fished. My dad and I learned how to start a fire together after several false starts. We cooked together and I ate the sweetest marshmallows I had ever tasted. Dad told me stories of his life, stories I had never heard or perhaps I hadn’t been listening. When the weekend came to an end, I realized I hadn’t thought of my phone once. I hadn’t felt the need to be connected to anywhere else. It dawned on me that what mattered most were the moments I was sharing with just my father and nature.
