The fourth-traders walk up to a full-length mirror — one after the other — at a school in southwest Atlanta.
“I’m smart!” a girl with brown hair says.
“I’m a good person!” boy wearing a mask adds.
A boy wearing glasses follows with “I’m strong and independent” before hurriedly walking away. In the background, their teacher, Neffiteria Acker, holds up the mirror in front of the kids and cheers them on. “Yes! Louder! Love it!” he calls out.
Acker teaches science at Gideons Elementary School, and she’s on a mission to boost her students’ confidence and self-love. The kids say their positive affirmations (肯定) every morning before class starts. The daily routine seems to be resonating (引起共鸣的). A fellow teacher recently posted a video of hacker’s students sharing their affirm at ions on social media that’s been viewed and re-shared more than 4, 000 times.
Mental health issued are rising among children nationwide. Kids “need all of the kindness and care we can offer,” says Dr. Marcuetta aims, a psychologist. Children develop their beliefs based on how grown-ups speak to them, making teachers a key influence and positive affirm at ion a crucial first step, she adds.
Acker also has cards printed out with words such as powerful, great, talented, valued and intelligent. “When they cannot think of an affirm at ion themselves, I encourage them to pick a card and say that in the mirror,” she says.
With every passing day, the kids say it with more confidence as they look at their own reflections.
Acker is onto something, experts say.
In Dr. Marcuetta Sims’s work with adults, most of their mental damage is connected to messages they got when they were younger and the beliefs that resulted from that, she says.
“Our words hold so much power and when these words are being internalized by children who are still in the process of developing their sense of self, those words carry even more weight,” Sims says. “The way we speak to children is the way they learn how to speak to themselves. It’s how they develop their self-talk, which influences their behaviors and the choice they make in life.”
24. What do Acker’s students do before class every day?
A. Reviewing what they ‘ be learned. B. Completing a group art project.
C. Engaging in a team-building exercise. D. Giving positive comments to themselves.
25. Which of the following can best describe Acker as a teacher?
A. Creative and modest. B. Humorous and helpful.
C. Warm and encouraging. D. Knowledgeable and strict.
26. What effect does the daily routine have on the children?
A. They have a better memory. B. They develop greater self-confidence.
C. Their science graded improve. D. Their reading skills are enhanced.
27. What can we infer from the words of Dr. Marcuetta aims?
A. Parents should spend more time with their children.
B. Negative words are more powerful than positive words.
C. Adults should choose their words carefully with children.
D. Children should be encouraged to express their emotions.

Researchers from the Weitzman School of Design at the University of Pennsylvania have found that dragonfly wings could help engineers design lighter, stronger and more durable (耐用的) aircraft wings. Building on the rules of biomimicry (生物模拟), Masoud Akbarzadeh and his student Hao Zheng have studied the wing of a dragonfly to redesign that of a boding 777.
“Nature is a great teacher in telling us how to optimize systems” Akbarzadeh said. “And when you look at a dragonfly, you see wings that have evolved over millions of years into an incredibly light weight, efficient and strong structure,” he added.
Interested in the shape and structure of the dragonfly wings, they discovered that their veins give the wings both durability and flexibility, enabling dragonflies to fly with flexibility and speed. “When we looked closely at the patterns on a dragonfly’s wing, we realized that it includes many con vex polygons (凸多边形),” Akbarzadeh said.
“The con vex network of the wing is very similar to the efficient networks we design,” he said. “We thought, ‘Could we use our geometry-based analysis tools to analyze these patterns and recreate them under different conditions for other types of wings?’” he added.
The researchers studied the wing structure’s behaviour by copying its structural pattern. “Eventually, we showed that this approach could result in more efficient wing structure against out-of-plane bending,” Akbarzadeh said.
The team took advantage of their discoveries in practical situations by combining designs inspired by dragonflies with a 2D extruded air frame (挤压机身) of a being 777 wing at a 1:120 scale. The team observed a remarkable increase in the structural efficiency of the wings. The dragonfly design improved the out-of-plane stability by 25%, showing the possibility of developing lighter and more efficient wing designs.
Moving forward, the team intends to look deeper into the 3D structure of the dragonfly wing to discover additional design ideas.
28. Which of the following best explains “optimize” underlined in paragraph 2?
A. Make something as good as it can be. B. Improve the appearance of something.
C. Simplify the design of something. D. Cut the cost of something.
29. What makes dragonfly wings durable and flexible?
A. Their colours. B. Their veins. C. Their size. D. Their weight.
30. How did the researchers apply their findings to a boding 777 wing design?
A. By adding more engines. B. By painting the wings to look like dragonflies.
C. By increasing the weight of the wings for stability. D. By using the structural pattern of dragonfly wings.
31. What is the main idea of the text?
A. The history of dragonfly wing research. B. The benefits of using biomimicry in engineering.
C. Dragonfly wings help design aircraft wings. D. boding 777 wings need improvement.

Sometimes the best thing in life is a simple formula (公式) that can solve a complex problem, such as the famous 7-38-55 rule. This one claims that only 7 % of a conversation’s meaning is found in the words. The remaining 93 % comes from the speaker’s tone of voice and body language (38 % and 55 %, respectively).
The 7-38-55 rule was created by psychologist alert Mehrabian, who, in the late 1960 s, performed two studies that would serve as its base. In his first study, Mehrabian asked 30 women participants to listen to words spoken in different bones of voice (positive, neutral or negative). His second study was similar except this time 37 women participants were also given a photograph of a person’s face with different expressions (like, neutral or dislike). Mehrabian found that, compared with words, participants were better at detecting the emotional change in the intonation and facial expressions.
We can’t say that Mehrabian’s research is wrong or useless. However, nothing in Mehrabian’s research suggests the 7-38-55 rule can be applied to communication as a whole. Imagine that you’re listening to a lecture. It can be on any subject you’d like. Now imagine that same lecture delivered through a series of cods, grunts, gesture and winks. Would you say you get 93 % of the content? Probably not. In a similar manner, if words were really only 7 % of communication, then why would anybody need to learn a foreign language? You should be able to deal with any foreign culture easily with nods, quiet smiles, and the occasional chest bump (撞胸). But as anyone who has traveled inter nation ally can tell you, a good translation dictionary help you understand more than 7 % of a person’s meaning.
It’s nice to think that science and psychology can offer us accurate (精确的) formulas for solving life’s complex problems, but the truth is that such rules are false comforts. It takes curiosity, sympathy, insight, and emotional intelligence to communicate with others and create meaningful connections. There is no easy number to manage that, but maybe there is also comfort to be found in knowing that you aren’t limited by some fixed formula. You can make your conversations on your own.
32. What did Mehrabian try to find out in the two studies?
A. What affected women ‘ communication ability
B. How women got information and made decisions.
C. How emotions affected people’s access to information.
D. What influenced people’s understanding in conversations.
33. What do the two examples in paragraph 3 show?
A. The necessity for people to own a good translation dictionary.
B. The significance of body language in understanding emotions.
C. The limitations of the 7-38-55 rule in practical communication.
D. The in accuracy of unspoken communication to convey meanings.
34. What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A. People should have their own ways of conversations.
B. Staying curious is enough to establish meaningful connections.
C. Psychology provided useful formulas to deal with life’s complexities.
D. Comforts offered by interpersonal communications are misleading.
35. Why did the author write this text?
A. To explain the content of the 7-38-55 rule. B. To give a brief account of the 7-38-55 rule.
C. To question a famous rule of communication. D. To honor an outstanding expert on communication.

At its last printing, it was 20 volumes, with nearly 22, 000 pages. This ___57___ (strange) popular book is one of the most famous dictionaries in the English-speaking world, the Oxford English Dictionary.
The Oxford English Dictionary, or OED ___58___ short, began in 1857 as just an idea of a group of people who thought the world needed an English-language dictionary ___59___ (show)the history of English words. It wasn’t until the late 1870 s, however, ___60___ James Murray joined the project that it began to grow. James Murray and his assistants collected millions of pieces of paper, each one with a word and an example sentence or phrase ___61___ (write) on it. Finally, in 1928, the dictionary was completed and published. ___62___ James Murray passed away in 1915 and did not live to see the completion of his life’s work.

It was a beautiful Sunday morning when Areeb woke, shouting, “Dad! Can you please buy me a bicycle? It’s been a whole month since you said we would get it soon!”
His father, who was reading the newspaper, looked up and replied, “Hmm … alight, get ready. We’re going to buy you a bicycle.” Areeb’s face lit up with excitement. He quickly jumped out of bed, rushed to the bathroom, took a shower, and got dressed in record time. He could hardly contain his anticipation as he imagined himself riding a shiny new bike through the neighborhood.
Areeb and his father got into the car and set off towards the bicycle shop. As they drove, Areeb’s mind raced with thoughts about the perfect bicycle. He pictured himself cycling down the street, the wind in his hair, and the sun on his face. He wondered what color he should choose — should it be blue, green, or black? Each color seemed more attractive than the last.
When they arrived at the shop, Areeb was overwhelmed by the sheer variety of bicycles on display. There were mountain bikes, road bikes, and even some with training wheels for younger kids. Among the dazzling selection of choice, Areeb’s eyes were drawn to a particular bicycle that seemed to stand out from the rest. It was the kind of bicycle every kid dreams of owning. Noticing Areeb’s fascination, his father approached the shopkeeper and asked, “How much is this blue bicycle?”
The shopkeeper, a friendly man with a warm smile, replied, “Sir, it costs 20, 000 rupees (卢比)”
The father raised his eyebrows (眉毛) in surprise and asked, “isn’t that a bit too expensive?”
Areeb, overhearing the conversation, felt a wave of disappointment. He realized that his father might not have enough money to buy the bicycle he loved so much. His heart sank as he thought about how long it would take him to save up the required amount. He imagined having to wait for weeks, or even months, before he could finally ride his dream bike.
注意:
1.续写词数应150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
When they returned home, Areeb’s little sister, Para, greeted them at the door._

“Nature is a great teacher in telling us how to optimize systems,” Akbarzadeh said.

B Staying curious is enough to establish meaningful connections.

To protect wildlife, we should first raise people’s awareness of the importance of biodiversity. Plus it is a wise decision to avoid buying products made from endangered animals, as this can help protect them from further harm. Lastly, reducing plastic use and promoting sustainable practice can help preserve the natural habitats that animals rely on.
By working together, we can create a sustainable future for all living beings. Let’s take responsibility and protect our precious wildlife for the sake of our planet.

【答案】When they returned home, Areeb’s little sister, Para, greeted them at the door. “What happened, Brother? Did you get your bicycle?” she asked eagerly. Areeb shook his head, explaining that the bike was beyond their budget. Sensing her brother’s disappointment, Para paused for a moment and then suggested they set up a lemonade stand. The idea immediately lifted Areeb’s spirits. He quickly approached his father and shared it with him, hoping to earn enough money for the bike.
Their father, always supportive, agreed to help them set up the lemonade stand. They quickly got to work, gathering lemons, sugar, and water to make the lemonade. Areeb and para squeezed lemons, mixed the ingredients, and set up a small table by the side of the road. Their lemonade was a hit! The refreshing drink attracted many customers, and word spread quickly. In just a few days, their little stand became extremely popular, and they managed to earn 20, 000 rupees. With the money, Areeb finally got his new bicycle. From this experience, Areeb learned that to achieve something, one must work hard, stay determined, and give their best effort. Sometimes, the sweetest victories are the ones you earn through your own efforts.
