【原文】M: Hello everyone. Professor Williams asked us to talk about our volunteer projects during the summer holiday. Many of you shared your experiences in food banks, community centers and even hospitals. For me, I’d like to tell you about my experience in an animal center in California.
I had always loved animals. But this was my first time getting up close and personal with them. I got to work with dogs, cats and even rabbits. Each day I would walk the dog three times, which was my favorite part. Cleaning the cages for rabbits was a bit boring, though. While it was hard work, the sense of achievement was great.
One experience that stood out was when a dog called Max was brought in.
Max had once been hurt and was afraid of humans. I made it my personal goal to make him feel comfortable around people again. I spent hours sitting with him, offering him food and treats and especially talking to him softly. Gradually he began to trust me and allowed me to pet him. Overall, it was an incredibly rewarding experience.

Record fires sweeping across the Amazon this month have been catching global headlines as scientists and environmental groups are worried that they will worsen climate change and threaten biodiversity(生物多样性).
As the largest rainforest in the world, the Amazon is often called “the lungs of the world”. It is also home to about 3 million species of plants and animals, and 1 million local people. The vast lands of rainforest play an important role in the world’s ecosystem because they take in heat instead of it being reflected back into the atmosphere. They also store carbon dioxide (二氧化碳)and produce oxygen, making sure that less carbon is given off, mitigating the effects of climate change.
“Any forest destroyed is a threat to biodiversity and the people who use that biodiversity,” Thomas Lovejoy, an ecologist at George Mason University told National Geographic. “The shocking threat is that a lot of carbon goes into the atmosphere,” he stressed. “Facing the global climate change, we cannot afford more damage to a major source of oxygen and biodiversity. The Amazon must be protected,” U.N. Secretary General Antonio Guterres said.
Data from the National Institute for Space Research (INPE) show that the number of forest fires in Brazil quickly increased by 82 percent from January to August this year from a year ago. A total of 71,497 forest fires were recorded in the country in the first eight months of 2019, up from 39,194 in the same period in 2018, INPE said. “It’s reported that the forest areas in the Brazilian Amazon have decreased something between 20 and 30 percent compared to the last 12 months,” Carlos Nobre, a researcher at the University of Sao Paulo, told German broadcaster Deutsche Welle.
Brazil owns about 60 percent of the Amazon rainforest, whose drop could have severe results for global climate and rainfall. The size of the area ruined by fires has yet to be determined, but the emergency has transcended(超出)Brazil’s borders, reaching Peruvian, Paraguayan and Bolivian areas.
24. What is the second paragraph mainly talking about?
A. The effects of climate change.
B. The role of the Amazon rainforest.

With humans encroaching(侵入) more and more on wildlife habitats, animals are finding that the best way to survive isn’t to pack up and move—it’s to adapt to the night life. A variety of previously daytime animals such as foxes, deer and boars have become active at night to avoid human activity out of fear. But this nighttime switch comes with its own risks.
Researchers looked at how 62 species of animals on six continents changed their behavior in response to human activities such as hunting, farming, and development. The studies employed various technologies to follow the animals, from GPS trackers to motion-activated cameras.
Once night falls, the animals surveyed became far more active than they were before humans arrived, hunting and looking for food in the dark. For example, animals that used to split their activity evenly between day and night typically increased their nighttime activity to 68%.
The team also found the animals responded similarly to these human encroachments, regardless of whether human activity directly affected them. So, a deer might become more active at night simply because it sees humans hiking nearby, not because it’s being hunted.
The researchers believe these nighttime behaviors not only allow humans and animals to coexist more peacefully, they may be able to give us hints as to how to plan conservation efforts accordingly, such as limiting human activity during times when a specific species is more active. But moving to the nightlife could also have downsides for these animals. A nighttime lifestyle can reduce an animal’s ability to hunt and find food successfully and can even affect its ability to find a mate. Switching to a nighttime lifestyle can affect natural patterns of life even if these animals are doing so to reduce their interaction with humans. So, just because animals are becoming more active at night doesn’t mean they’ve escaped the influence of humans.
28. Why are animals becoming more active at night?
A. It is easier to find food at night.
B. It is easier to escape being hunted.
C. They have got used to nightlife.
D. They can be less affected by human.
29. How did the researchers find the animals’ behavioral changes?
A. They followed and watched the animals.
B. They compared different animals.
C. They used modern technologies.
D. They found more animals at night.
30. What can we infer from the fourth paragraph?
A. Deer can get used to nightlife easily.
B. Animals can be affected only when being hunted.
C. Any human encroachment can affect animals.
D. Animals should stay away from humans.
31. What is the passage mainly about?
A. Animals move to nightlife due to human encroachments.
B. Animals have their own ways to get used to life changes.
C. Animals should be well protected before it is too late.
D. The benefits and risks of animals’ nightlife style.
【答案】28. D 29. C 30. C 31. A

The subtitle of my 1995 book Emotional Intelligence (EI) reads, “Why It Can Matter More Than IQ.” That subtitle, unfortunately, has led to misunderstandings of what I actually say. Some people even make the absurd claim that “EI accounts for 80 percent of success.”
I was reminded this again when looking through comments on an Australian study that fails to find much of a connection between teenagers’ level of emotional intelligence and their academic achievements. For me, there’s no surprise here. But for those misguided people who think I claim EI matters more than IQ for academic achievement, it would be a “Gotcha!” moment.
My argument is actually that emotional and social skills give people advantages in areas where such abilities make the most difference, like love and leadership. EI does better than IQ in “soft” areas, where intelligence matters relatively little for success. That said, another such area where EI matters more than IQ is in performance at work, when comparing people with roughly the same educational backgrounds like MBAs or accountants.
IQ is a much stronger predictor than EI of which jobs or professions people can enter. However, having enough intelligence to hold a given job does not by itself predict whether one will be a star performer or rise to management or leadership positions in one’s field. In part this is because everyone at the top level of a given profession has already been examined for intelligence. At those top levels a high IQ becomes a basic ability, one needed just to get into and stay in the game.
The one place I expect we will be seeing more data showing a relationship between skills in the emotional and social area and school performance will be in studies of children who have gone through social/emotional learning (SEL) programs. These courses give students the self-management skills they need to learn better. And so to the degree that advantage promotes learning, they should do better on academic achievement scores. A study from the University of Illinois finds around a 10 percent increase in achievement test scores among these students. Probably, the SEL programs would also have meant higher scores on the particular assessment of EI used in the Australian study, and so if they had tested such children, there may well have been a positive connection.
So learning seems to be another area where EI may matter—whether more than IQ is a question based on experience.
32. The author writes the passage to ________.
A. state his new opinion on IQ and EI
B. explain the importance of IQ and EI
C. clear up some misreading of his book
D. argue for his study into school learning
33. According to the author, EI matters more than IQ for ________.
A. family relations; being promoted at work
B. being a leader; receiving an MBA degree
C. winning a quiz; becoming a star performer
D. becoming an accountant; getting an interview
34. The author might agree that ________.
A. intelligence matters greatly for success
B. the subtitle of his book is easily misunderstood
C. EI matters more than IQ for academic achievement
D. IQ determines one’s basic ability to enter a certain field
35. We can learn from Paragraph 5 that ________.
A. the two same studies have opposite findings
B. the SEL programs improve students' scores rapidly
C. students’ school performance is decided by their EI
D. the SEL programs attempt to promote learning with EI

In 2017, the BBC documentary Spy in the Wild (《荒野间谍》) gave us a chance to look much more closely into the world of animals through the eyes of “animal spies”.可知,2017年,英国广播公司纪录片《荒野间谍》让我们有机会通过“动物间谍”的眼睛近距离地观察动物世界。和下句They “live” together with animals in order to record their lives.可知,他们和动物一起“生活”,以便记录他们的生活。所以段中应该有一个过渡句,所以C项These spies are actually robots with cameras that look like real animals.(这些间谍实际上是带有摄像头的机器人,看起来像真正的动物。)符合题意,故选C。
【37题详解】
段中过渡句,根据文章Returning for its second season, Spy in the Wild follows the tradition of the first season while introducing new cameras and robots.可知,《荒野间谍》第二季回归,延续了第一季的传统,同时引入了新相机和机器人。再因For example, a spy turtle can lay robot eggs, a spy squirrel can gather robot nuts, and monkeys can play with a spy snowball.可知,例如,一只间谍龟可以产下机器人蛋,一只间谍松鼠可以收集机器人坚果,猴子可以玩一个间谍雪球。所以中间需要一个过渡句来顺承,所以D项With the help of these robots, these “animal spies” can do many things.(在这些机器人的帮助下,这些“动物间谍”可以做很多事情。)符合,故选D。
【38题详解】
根据文章In the new season, more than 50 spy robots are sent to study animals in all kinds of environments, from under the Pacific Ocean to the Arctic.可知,在新的一季中,50多个间谍机器人被派去研究各种环境中的动物,从太平洋底到北极。段中理解,注意后文的they的回指,只有B和C选项涉及名词复数,C选项已经用过,所以B项But these spies don’t just record everyday goings-on.(但是这些间谍不仅仅记录每天发生的事情,他们第一手研究动物之间共享的情感联系。)符合题意,故选B。
【39题详解】
根据文章For example, a spy penguin was accepted as part of a group in South Georgia Island.可知,例如,一只间谍企鹅被南乔治亚岛的一个企鹅群体接受。以及后文Quite accidentally, our spy creature is at the center of something special, capturing (捕捉到) emotions that have seldom been watched 可知,“非常偶然地,我们的间谍生物正处于某种特殊事物的中心,捕捉到很少被人关注的情感。”所以应该有一个过渡句,所以G项It watched on as penguin parents tried hard to make it home to feed their chicks.(当企鹅爸妈赶回家去给他们的宝宝喂食时,他负责站岗。)故选G。
【40题详解】
根据文章The whole point is ... trying to get closer than we ever have before to capture those elusive (难以得到的) moments when they start to show the kind of emotions we have,”director John Downer told PBS. 可知,“关键是它试图比以往任何时候都更接近捕捉那些难以得到的情感,”导演告诉PBS。所以设空处应该是考段落主旨大意,故F项The documentary aims to record animal behavior that we would rarely see.(这部纪录片旨在记录我们很少看到的动物行为。)符合题意,故选F。

第二节(满分25分)
67. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
In the first and second grades, I was extremely shy. I had friends, but it just wasn’t in my personality to be very outgoing, even if I knew someone well. I was even quieter with strangers, and so I wasn’t very good at meeting new people. I was afraid that I would do or say something wrong.
So in our school’s annual grand play, I usually sat in a secluded (僻静的) corner to watch the performance alone. I hoped to sit in the background and watch the actors sweat in front of all those pairs of eyes.
One day in the third grade, my teacher Mrs. Sally called me into her office and said, “Oh, Mary, you re great at memorizing things, and you have such a sweet personality. Perfect for Jenny! ‘ But I bowed my head and dared not speak. The teacher saw this and then said, “Of course, plenty of girls would love the role, and I could find somebody else. But I hope you could try it for me. I had you in mind for Jenny while writing the play! If you really don’t want to, I won’t force you. It’s your choice.”
My mind was spinning (快速旋转) faster than the windmill (风车) on the school playground. Mrs. Sally, whom I loved and admired, wanted me to play this role. She believed in me. My eyes moved across the room to a poster I had never noticed before. It showed a shooting star and read, “If you reach for the stars, you might at least grab a piece of the moon.” I looked into Mrs. Sally’s shining blue eyes and said, “Okay, I’ll try.” I realized it was time to throw off my shy mask and show the world who I really was.
In the following five months, the teacher taught me how to set, put on makeup, memorize lines, create costumes and so on. Gradually, I mastered (掌握) my lines and songs.
注意:1、续写词数应为150左右;

However, when I was about to go on stage, my heart was pounding so hard that my throat tightened and my knees felt weak.
At that time, Mrs. Sally came backstage for her final check-up and noticed that my nervousness. “It doesn’t matter how you do tonight,” she said. “You’ve already shown how wonderful you are.” Looking into Mrs Sally’s shining blue eyes, I calmed down and then walked onto the stage with his warm words like a ray of sunshine. When I finished my performance, the audience burst into applause. The scene made me feel myself floating in an ocean of happiness. I knew that all this was due to the encouragement from my teacher, who helped me find the confidence to succeed.

Many of you share your experiences in food banks, community centres and even hospitals. For me, i'd like to tell you about my experience in an animal centre in california. I had always loved animals, but this was my first time getting up close and personal with them. I got to work with dogs, cats and even rabbits. Each day. I would walk the dog three times, which was my favorite apart. Cleaning the cages for rabbits was a bit boring, though. While IT was hard work, the sense of achievement was great. One experience that stood out was when a dog called max was brought in. X had once been hurt and was afraid of humans. I made in my personal goal to make him feel comfortable around people again. I spent hours sitting with him, offering him food and treats, and especially talking to him softly. Gradually, he began to trust me and allowed me to pet him.
C. The results of the Amazon rainforest fires.
D. The causes of the decreasing biodiversity.
25. Which of the following best explains “mitigating” underlined in Paragraph2?
A. Easing. B. Causing.
C. Worsening. D. Benefiting
26. What can we learn from Thomas’s and Antonio’s words?
A. The biodiversity makes the rainforests unique.
B. The rainforest fires result in serious consequences.
C. The global climate crisis brings more rainforest fires.
D. The dry weather leads to the rainforest fires.
27. Which section of a magazine is this text probably taken from?
A. Sports and music. B. Science and technology.
C. Nature and geography. D. Business and culture.

B explain the importance of IQ and EI
C. clear up some misreading of his book
D. argue for his study into school learning
33. According to the author, EI matters more than IQ for ________.
A. family relations; being promoted at work
B. being a leader; receiving an MBA degree
C. winning a quiz; becoming a star performer
D. becoming an accountant; getting an interview
34. The author might agree that ________.
A. intelligence matters greatly for success
B. the subtitle of his book is easily misunderstood
C. EI matters more than IQ for academic achievement
D. IQ determines one’s basic ability to enter a certain field
35. We can learn from Paragraph 5 that ________.
A. the two same studies have opposite findings
B. the SEL programs improve students' scores rapidly
