At a comedy night at Johns Hopkins University in Maryland, members of the school’s StandUp Comedy Club bring lots of laughter to their classmates with funny speeches and humorous body movements. These college students’ humour entertains busy, young people and eases their stress.
Yet the club member Ariella Shua says comedy is serious work. Every comedy starts as an individual project—each member writes their own material. Then they try it out in weekly club meetings where all club members read the material, go joke by joke and see what works and what doesn’t. Nothing unsatisfactory will be compromised (妥协).In this way comes a satisfying comedy.
Ariella joined the club last year. Now she does not go anywhere without bringing something on which she can take notes. “Whenever I just have a thought in my head that seems like ‘Oh, this is strange.’ or when I see something or overhear someone saying something in the library, I just put it down,” Ariella explained. “Later, when I’m trying to write my own material, I go through my notes to see if there is anything that I can use.”
President of the StandUp Comedy Club Nicholas Scandura finds that writing is one of the many skills he has developed since joining the club. “Writing jokes is really fun and it takes a lot of critical thinking,” he said. The club gives its members a sense of community. When they meet, they share funny experiences, tell jokes and laugh.
Over the past ten years, standup comedy clubs have become common on college campuses in America. Nicholas said, “Now everyone wants to do it because the culture of standup has gotten a lot of media attention and become more popular.”
Last year, Harry Kuperstein joined the club and discovered the club was a natural fit. Noticing the funny qualities of different situations improved his way of looking at the world. Becoming an active member also helped him work on the future skills he would need as a medical doctor. “Having jokes ready to go might help smooth over interactions between doctors and patients and make you a better public speaker,” he said.
4. What can a successful comedy be described as according to the text?
A. A group effort. B. A personal project.
C. A satisfying task. D. A compromise result.
5. What habit has Ariella formed since joining the club?
A. Taking notes in class. B. Creating her own style.
C. Becoming a good observer. D. Going to the library regularly.
6. How can the club help Harry in his opinion?
A. By easing his stress of being a doctor.
B. By preparing the ground for his career.
C. By changing his way of communication.
D. By developing his interest in public speaking.
7. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Laughter Is Serious Work
B. Humour Is an Edge in Jobs
C. Comedy Comes with Learning
D. Clubs Influence One’s World View
A 5. C 6. B 7. C

Then they try it out in weekly club meetings where all club members read the material, go joke by joke and see what works and what doesn’t.
根据第三段中的“Whenever I just have a thought in my head that seems like ’Oh, this is strange.’ or when I see something or overhear someone saying something in the library, I just put it down (每当我脑子里有一个想法,好像是“哦,这太奇怪了。”或者当我在图书馆里看到什么或无意中听到有人在说什么时,我就把它记下来)”可知,Ariella 自加入俱乐部后养成了观察的习惯,并把自己观察的内容记下来,故选C项。

Beethoven is undoubtedly one of the greatest musicians. He completed 722 musical works. Unfortunately, the master died while still working on his Tenth Symphony (交响曲). Now, a team of musicians and scientists have used artificial intelligence (AI) to complete the artist’s final composition.
Dr. Matthias first came up with the idea to complete the composition in 2019. He thought it was an appropriate way to celebrate Beethoven’s 250th birthday in December 2020. He began by enlisting an international team of music experts to help him with the giant task. They included the music composer Walter and Dr. Ahmed, the creator of an innovative AI technology for the art market.
Ahmed and his colleagues started the process by familiarizing the AI software initially with a broad range of classical music, and then, narrowed it down to just Beethoven’s work. Meanwhile, Walter and his group tried to interpret the rough drafts and the handful of notes that detailed Beethoven’s plans for the Tenth Symphony.
The team then began the slow and careful task of feeding the AI software musical notes from the unfinished composition. To stay true to Beethoven’s original composition, Ahmed’s team sent Walter hundreds of AI-generated musical note variations every evening. Walter would listen to them and then select the one that he thought was closest to what the artist would have written. The AI team would add the music and rerun the software to generate the next suggestions. And piece by piece, the team was able to complete Beethoven’s Tenth Symphony!
The composition was first released on October 9, 2021. Not surprisingly, it caused some controversy (争议). Critics believe technology should not be used to replicate the human creative process. Ahmed and his team agree with their opinions and say their AI software is not out to replace humans — it is just a tool to help artists to express themselves in new ways.
8. What is the purpose of the writer in writing paragraph 1?
A. To voice his greatest respect for Beethoven.
B. To compare traditional music and AI music.
C. To present the team’s hard work.
D. To introduce an innovative method to create music.
9. Which can be used to best describe the team’s work?
A. Inspiring B. Steady C. Challenging D. Boring
10. What does the underlined word “replicate” in the last paragraph mean?
A. question B. copy C. direct D. speed
11. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. Beethoven’s Tenth Symphony Is Eventually Staged
B. AI Helps Complete Beethoven’s Unfinished Symphony
C. A Team of Experts Completed an Impossible Mission
D. A Controversial Way Successfully Interprets Beethoven’s Music
D 9. C 10. B 11. B

根据文章第一段“Beethoven is undoubtedly one of the greatest musicians. He completed 722 musical works. Unfortunately, the master died while still working on his Tenth Symphony (交响曲). Now, a team of musicians and scientists have used artificial intelligence (AI) to complete the artist’s final composition.(贝多芬无疑是最伟大的音乐家之一。他完成了722部音乐作品。不幸的是,这位大师在创作他的第十交响曲时去世了。现在,一个由音乐家和科学家组成的团队使用人工智能(AI)完成了这位艺术家的最终作品)”和文章第二段“Dr. Matthias first came up with the idea to complete the composition in 2019.(马蒂亚斯博士在2019年首次提出了完成这一合成的想法)”可推知,第一段的主要目的是为了介绍一种创新的音乐创作方法。
根据文章第二段中“He began by enlisting an international team of music experts to help him with the giant task.(他首先召集了一个国际音乐专家团队来帮助他完成这项艰巨的任务)”和第三段“Ahmed and his colleagues started the process by familiarizing the AI software initially with a broad range of classical music, and then, narrowed it down to just Beethoven’s work. Meanwhile, Walter and his group tried to interpret the rough drafts and the handful of notes that detailed Beethoven’s plans for the Tenth Symphony.(艾哈迈德和他的同事们首先让人工智能软件熟悉大量的古典音乐,然后把范围缩小到贝多芬的作品。与此同时,沃尔特和他的团队试图解读这些草稿和一些详细说明贝多芬第十交响曲计划的音符)”及文章第四段“The team then began the slow and careful task of feeding the AI software musical notes from the unfinished composition. And piece by piece, the team was able to complete Beethoven’s Tenth Symphony!(随后,团队开始了一项缓慢而细致的工作,将那首未完成作品中的音符输入人工智能软件。
根据划线词下文“Ahmed and his team agree with their opinions and say their AI software is not out to replace humans — it is just a tool to help artists to express themselves in new ways.(艾哈迈德和他的团队同意他们的观点,并表示他们的人工智能软件并不是要取代人类——它只是一个帮助艺术家以新的方式表达自己的工具)”可知,划线词所在的句子意为“批评者认为,技术不应该被用来复制人类的创造过程。”
D
Social media is taking over our lives: Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and now, TikTok (抖音). These social media platforms have transformed from a way to stay connected to an industry where even kids can make money off their posts. While this may seem like another opportunistic (机会主义) innovation, it’s really full of hidden false realities.
The median income (中位收入) recorded in the United States of America was about $63,000 in 2018. TikTokers can make anywhere from $50,000 to $150,000 for a TikTok brand partnership, and TikTokers with over a million followers can make up to $30,000 a month - $360,000 a year. They are making more than the average person trying to feed their family and keep a roof over their heads, simply by posting a 15-second video.
This is mad in more ways than one. Not only is it an overpaid “job”, it promotes unworthy admiration from viewers and a false sense of reality. Many of these famous TikTokers are still teens, and the effects of fame at such an early stage in life might cause issues later in life, such as mental illness. Teens between the ages of 13 and 17 make up 27% of TikTok viewers, who can be easily influenced by what they are watching. They can put a false sense of self-value into who they look up to and what they represent: money, fame, being considered traditionally attractive.
While TikTok has become a great tool for marketing, it’s important to understand how this content affects young viewers. If we’re constantly consuming content that shows us all we need to do to be successful is be traditionally attractive and post a 15-second video featuring a new dance, it will challenge our knowledge of what really makes someone successful and will in turn affect our individual work ethics (伦理). What about the people who miss birthday and family holidays due to their jobs and aren’t getting paid nearly as much as these TikTokers?
Richard Colyer, president and creator of Metaphor, Inc, had his own view on this issue. “It sounds great to make money for doing the latest dance moves in a 15-second video, but we should feed the minds of kids and not just their bank accounts. TikTok can be great if used properly. Money alone is not good, technology alone is not good and connectedness can be bad if it’s only online.”
Again, as a fellow consumer of TikTok, I do enjoy the app when I have some time to kill and need a good laugh. I’ m not against someone making a living on entertainment, but what does getting famous of a 15-second video teach young people?
12. What does the underlined word “this” in Paragraph 1 refer to?
A. Social networking. B. Making money on social media.
C. A job offered by TikTok. D. Staying connected to the Internet.
13. What do the numbers given in Paragraph 2 show?
A. TikTokers are earning money easily.
B. All TikTokers are richer than average people.
C. Most TikTokers can become millionaires overnight.
D. TikTokers earn much more than ordinary workers.
14. Which is the possible influence of TikTok on its young users?
A. They tend to live an adult life too soon.
B. They are forced to pay for certain services.
C. They may quit other social media.
D. They are likely to develop false value.
15. What can we infer from Richard Colyer’s comments?
A. TikTok can be a positive influence if teens employ it wisely.
B. Young TikTokers should be banned from making money.
C. It is better to involve education on investment in TikTok videos.
D. Contents of videos need checking before their release online.
16. Which of the following might be the best title of the passage?
A. Say No to Tik Tok B. Join Young TikTokers
C. TikTok - A Mine of Money D. A Job Vs An Entertainment
12. B 13. A 14. D 15. A 16. D
根据指代关系和第一段的“These social media platforms have transformed from a way to stay connected to an industry where even kids can make money off their posts. While this may seem like another opportunistic (机会主义) innovation, it’s really full of hidden false realities. (这些社交媒体平台已经从一种保持联系的方式转变为一个连孩子都可以从他们的帖子中赚钱的行业。虽然这看起来像是另一个机会主义的创新,但它实际上充满了隐藏的虚假现实。)”可知,this指代上文中“even kids can make money off their posts”这一现象,即“在社交媒体上赚钱”。
根据第二段“TikTokers can make anywhere from $50,000 to $150,000 for a TikTok brand partnership, and TikTokers with over a million followers can make up to $30,000 a month - $360,000 a year. They are making more than the average person trying to feed their family and keep a roof over their heads, simply by posting a 15-second video. (TikTok品牌合作伙伴关系的TikTok用户可以赚取5万至15万美元的收入,拥有100多万粉丝的TikTok用户每月可以赚取3万美元,即每年36万美元。他们仅仅通过发布一段15秒的视频,就赚了比普通人更多的钱来养家糊口。)”可推知,TikToker很容易赚钱。故选A项。
根据第三段“Teens between the ages of 13 and 17 make up 27% of TikTok viewers, who can be easily influenced by what they are watching. They can put a false sense of self-value into who they look up to and what they represent: money, fame, being considered traditionally attractive. (13至17岁的青少年占TikTok观众的27%,他们很容易受到所观看内容的影响。他们会把一种错误的自我价值感放在他们所崇拜的人和他们所代表的东西上:金钱、名誉、传统上被认为有吸引力。)”可知,孩子们很容易被观看的内容影响,他们可能会建立错误的自我价值观念,追求传统意义上更加吸引人的金钱和名誉,即年轻的用户可能会树立不正确的价值观。故选D项。
【15题详解】
推理判断题。根据第五段Richard Colyer的话“TikTok can be great if used properly. (如果使用恰当的话,TikTok可能会是很棒的。)”可推知,在Richard Colyer看来,如果使用恰当的话,TikTok可能会对青少年有好的影响。故选A项。
通读全文并结合最后一段“Again, as a fellow consumer of TikTok, I do enjoy the app when I have some time to kill and need a good laugh. I’ m not against someone making a living on entertainment, but what does getting famous of a 15-second video teach young people? A Job Vs An Entertainment
How Arts Promote Our Economy
When most people think of the arts, they imagine the beautiful painting, a wonderful piece of music, or an awardwinning performance in the theater.___17___ The economic effect of the arts is often overlooked(忽视) and badly judged.
___18___ Any given performance takes a tour bus full of artists, technical experts, managers, musicians, or writers to create an appealing piece of art. These people earn a living wage for their professional knowledge and skills.

According to the Dallas Area Cultural Advocacy Coalition, arts agencies employ more than 10,000 people as full—or parttime employees or independent contractors.
A successful arts neighborhood creates a ripple effect(连锁反应) throughout a community. In 2005, when the Bishop Arts Theatre was donated to our town, the location was considered a poor area of town. After investing more than $1 million in reconstructing the building, we began producing a full season of theater performances, jazz concerts, and yearround arts education programs in 2008. Nearly 40 percent of jazz lovers live outside of the Dallas city limits and drive or fly in to enjoy an evening in the Bishop Arts District.___20___
It is wrong to suppose arts groups cannot make a profit(利润).___21___ If you are a student studying the arts, chances are you have been illadvised to have a plan B. But those who truly understand the economic effect and can work to change the patterns can create a wide range of career possibilities.

【答案】17 B 18. A 19. C 20. E 21. D
根据上文“When most people think of the arts, they imagine the beautiful painting, a wonderful piece of music, or an awardwinning performance in the theater.(当大多数人想到艺术时,他们想象的是一幅美丽的画,一段美妙的音乐,或者剧院里一场获奖的表演)”以及后文“The economic effect of the arts is often overlooked(忽视) and badly judged.(艺术的经济效应常常被忽视和误判)”可知,本句与上文构成转折关系,指艺术不仅仅是这些,艺术团体给我们的社区带来更多的价值,下一句就引出了艺术对经济的作用。
根据本段内容“Any given performance takes a tour bus full of artists, technical experts, managers, musicians, or writers to create an appealing piece of art. These people earn a living wage for their professional knowledge and skills.(任何给定的演出都需要一辆满载着艺术家、技术专家、经理、音乐家或作家的巡演巴士来创造一件吸引人的艺术品。这些人靠他们的专业知识和技能赚取维持生活的工资)”可知,空处位于段首,是对这一段的总结。这一段主要讲了为了创作出吸引人的艺术作品,任何一次演出都会用车载着艺术家、技术专家、经理、音乐家或作家,这些人因为他们的专业知识和技能挣钱。由此可知,这一段的中心意思是:艺术创造了一些工作。故A选项“艺术创造就业机会,帮助发展经济”符合语境,故选A。
【19题详解】
根据后文““If you build it they will come” is a misleading belief. Painters, digital media experts, photographers, booking agents and promoters are hired to sell tickets and promote the event. According to the Dallas Area Cultural Advocacy Coalition, arts agencies employ more than 10,000 people as full—or parttime employees or independent contractors.(“如果你建好了,他们就会来”是一种误导人的信念。画家、数字媒体专家、摄影师、预订代理和推广人员被雇佣来销售门票和宣传活动。根据达拉斯地区文化倡导联盟的数据,艺术机构雇佣了1万多名全职、兼职员工或独立合同工)”以及上一段提到了艺术家、技术专家、经理、音乐家或作家,可知,这一段提到还需要另外一组人来卖票宣传。故C选项“需要另一群人来帮助推广这个活动”符合语境,故选C。
【20题详解】
根据上文“In 2005, when the Bishop Arts Theatre was donated to our town, the location was considered a poor area of town. After investing more than $1 million in reconstructing the building, we began producing a full season of theater performances, jazz concerts, and yearround arts education programs in 2008. Nearly 40 percent of jazz lovers live outside of the Dallas city limits and drive or fly in to enjoy an evening in the Bishop Arts District.(2005年,当主教艺术剧院被捐赠给我们镇时,这个地方被认为是镇上的贫困地区。
根据上文“It is wrong to suppose arts groups cannot make a profit(利润).(认为艺术团体不能盈利是错误的)”可知,空前面一句提到认为艺术团体无利可图是错误的。后文“If you are a student studying the arts, chances are you have been illadvised to have a plan B.But those who truly understand the economic effect and can work to change the patterns can create a wide range of career possibilities.(如果你是一名学习艺术的学生,那么你很有可能被错误地建议要有一个B计划。但那些真正了解经济影响并能努力改变这种模式的人,可以创造广泛的职业机会)”可知,空处表示转折,但是为了使生意持续下去,艺术团体必须创造利润。此处returns和profit是同义词,都表示“利润”。故D选项“但是为了继续经营下去,艺术团体必须产生回报”符合语境,故选D。

A. By easing his stress of being a doctor.
B. By preparing the ground for his career.
C. By changing his way of communication.
D. By developing his interest in public speaking.
7. What can be a suitable title for the text?

10. What does the underlined word “replicate” in the last paragraph mean?

Again as a fellow consumer of TikTok, I do enjoy the app when I have some time to kill and need a good laugh. I’ m not against someone making a living on entertainment, but what does getting famous of a 15-second video teach young people?

A. They tend to live an adult life too soon.
B. They are forced to pay for certain services.

15. What can we infer from Richard Colyer’s comments?
