Every so often, 31-year-old Chen Jiawen, a product designer at a technology company in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, sets aside a day for herself called Unplug Day. On this day, she disconnects from the digital world and focuses on real-life experiences. In the morning, she prepares breakfast for her sell while listening to music. In the afternoon, she wanders through the park with friends and in the evening, they enjoy a meal together without touching their phones, engaged in deep conversation. Upon returning home, she spends the evening reading.
Chen started the plan as she often felt “interrupted” by technology, citing moments of distraction (分心) like pop-up notifications, ring tones and repetitious warnings leading her to check for new messages, and feelings of information overload. “Occasionally disconnecting from the network is like feeding the brain a day of vegetarian food,” Chen said. Unplug Day is part of her plan to combat information overload from overusing the phone and to rebuild her focus. In addition to this, she has started replacing short videos with longer ones and prioritizes reading in-depth news articles or books. “When friends gather and everyone is glued to their phones, it makes me uncomfortable,” Chen said, adding that burying herself in social media prevented her from completing work as planned, leading to psychological burdens and a decreasing focus.
It’s become a common situation where modern people might unconsciously use the time spent waiting at traffic lights to watch a short video or constantly check out a trending topic upon receiving a push notification from an app. To prevent this sense of being “controlled” by mobile devices, some young Chinese like Chen are experimenting with digital minimalism and are discovering positive outcomes from their efforts. Technology should bring us joy, not reduce the time we spend with family or increas our anxiety. Our goal is to control technology rather than letting it control us.
4. What can we learn about Unplug Day?
A. It is a day for reading. B. It is a day without phones.
C. It is a day away from the Internet. D. It is a day to spend with friends.
5. What does the underlined word “combat” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Learn. B. Cancel. C. Obtain. D. Prevent.
6. What is the direct impact of over-involvement in social media on Chen Jiawen?
A. Tasks’ delays. B. Stress from peers.
C. Mental problems. D. A decreased ability.
7. What does the author suggest people do in the last paragraph?
A. Enjoy the benefits of technology.
B. Decrease the time spent on digital devices.
C. Remove the apps informing new messages.
D. Watch longer videos while waiting at traffic lights.

When a new product totally fails, companies typically try to move on as quickly as possible and put all of their energy into developing fresh ideas that they hope will catch on. But the Museum of Failure never forgets. This traveling exhibition, which was first launched in Sweden in 2017, has arrived in New York City.
By focusing on more than 150 commercial ideas that didn’t succeed for various reasons, the exhibition aims to stimulate discussion about accepting and learning from failure, for example, new Coke, limeade-flavored Oreo cookies, crystal Pepsi and a “hula chair” for exercise.
The exhibition is organized by Samuel West, a clinical psychologist who specializes in organizational science. He hopes it could help normalize and interpret the concept of failure, which he sees as a critical learning opportunity.
“My research is focused on helping organizations to be more innovative,” West says. “And one of the big problems of innovation is the fear of failure.” Indeed, many of the brands featured in the Museum of Failure haven’t let one or two frustrated efforts stand in their way. For example, Oreo has made plenty of delicious new flavors, and both Coca-Cola and PepsiCo are still booming. “People feel liberated when they see big well-known brands and companies that have a lot of money and skills and experience still fail when trying new things,” West says. “People feel liberated, like ‘big boys’ can fail, so why can’t we?”
The exhibition has interactive features like a “Share Your Failure” wall, where visitors can write their own mistakes on sticky notes. West says, “We want people to take meaningful risks and learn from them. That’s where the action is, when it comes to innovation: People trying something new, accepting the level of risk that comes with it and learning from it if the new thing fails. You fail but you gain insight, build on it, try a different version, tinker(修补) and come back again with something better.”
8. What is the second paragraph mainly about?
A. The fame of big brands.
B. The difficulty of innovation.
C. The purpose of the exhibition.
D. The importance of fresh ideas.
9. What does Samuel West think of failure?
A. Costly. B. Relative.
C. Unavoidable. D. Valuable.
10. What do Samuel West’s words in paragraph 4 show?
A. His exhibition is easy for people to understand.
B. Big companies are supportive of the exhibition.
C. The exhibition can help reduce people’s fear of failure.
D. Innovation spirit is of great importance to big companies.
11. What did Samuel West suggest people do in terms of innovation?
A. Try to avoid risks.
B. Learn from failure.
C. Refer to big brands’ ideas.
D. Put all your energy into it.
D
The animated film Ne Zha 2, released on January 29, 2025, has become a huge success in the film industry. Directed by the famous Jiaozi (Yang Yu), it continues the exciting story of Ne Zha (哪吒) and Ao Bing (敖丙) from the first movie.
After surviving a terrible disaster called the “Heavenly Tribulation (天劫),” Ne Zha and Ao Bing lost their physical bodies. Their souls were in great danger until Taiyi Zhenren (太乙真人), a wise immortal from Chinese mythology, saved them using a magical seven-colored lotus. However, peace did not last long. Their souls began to disappear again, forcing Taiyi Zhenren to face a difficult task — rebuilding their bodies with limited materials while solving unexpected problems.
The film shows remarkable character growth. Ne Zha, once known for his rebellious nature, learns to care deeply for his friends and understand his true self. His friend Ao Bing, who used to struggle with personal troubles, transforms into a brave warrior. In one powerful scene, Ao Bing declares courageously, “If there’s no path, I’ll create one!”
Visually, the movie is a feast for the eyes. It begins with thrilling scenes of flowing lava like wild rivers and terrifying sea monsters jumping out of the water, making viewers feel as if they are part of the action. Later, the story takes the audience to Kunlun Mountain (昆仑山) a magical place from Chinese myths filled with colorful landscapes and graceful fairy-like creatures. The most unforgettable part is the final battle, where characters use amazing weapons like the shape-changing Tianyuan Ding (天元鼎). The fast paced fighting and brilliant special effects leave a strong impression.
Beyond the action Ne Zha 2 teaches important life lessons. It encourages people to stay brave when facing difficulties, fight for what is right, and value friendship. These themes resonate with both young and adult audiences.
The film has broken box office records, earning an astonishing amount in its first week. It also received high praise from critics and viewers, currently holding an 8.6/10 rating on major review platforms. Many praise its perfect mix of cultural elements, exciting storytelling, and positive messages.
12. What happened to Ne Zha and Ao Bing after the “Heavenly Tribulation”?
A. They got stronger powers. B. They lost their physical bodies.
C. They became best friends immediately. D. They went to live in Kunlun Mountain.
13. Why did Taiyi Zhenren have a difficult task?

It is not always easy to keep a conversation going in English. You might not be sure about what to say. Or maybe you are afraid that your pronunciation is not good. So how can we continue a conversation in English? ___16___
Listen and follow up
First, remember the importance of listening. Listen to the other person attentively, so that you can ask a follow-up question. For example, let’s say the other person tells you, “I just got back from a trip to Canada.” ___17___ Where did you go in Canada? What was your favorite place there?
How was the food there?
Avold simple “yes” or “no” questions
If you want to keep a conversation going, it’s a good idea to ask questions that cannot be answered with a simple “yes” or “no”. If the other person asks you a “yes” or “no” question, try to give a longer answer to help keep the conversation going.
For example, a friend might ask, “Hey, have you seen the new Star Wars movie?” You could just answer, “No, I haven’t.” ___18___ You could answer: “No, but I plan to see it soon. How about you?”
___19___
Do not worry about your pronunciation. If your pronunciation is a little different, the other person will still understand your message if you try speaking slowly and clearly. When you are traveling in an English-speaking country and have some free time, be brave and speak in English with someone who does not look too busy. ___20___
A. Or, you could say more.
B. Be brave and practice often.
C. You can try the following ways.

May 18, 1986, was the kind of beautiful, sunny day that regularly brought the Rodriguez family to Santa Catalina Island for some fishing on their nine-metre pleasure boat, the DC Too. They spent the day fishing in the Pacific Ocean, then left the island in the early evening.
Soon thick fog rolled in. Louise fell into a light sleep beside her five-year-old sister, Trisha, at a table on the boat’s lower deck. Their father’s sharp orders frightened her awake: “Get out of the boat. It’s sinking!” Louise pushed her sister into the cold, dark water. The girls were followed by their mother, Petra Rodriguez. Both girls wore life jackets, but the adults did not. Within seconds, the boat capsized, leaving just the tip of its bow in the air.
After some time, her father told them he would swim for help. Louise watched him disappear into the darkness. A while later, her mother went still. Then her sister died, too.
Pisano and Strasser, both 25, were going on a fishing expedition. The fog was so thick that they couldn’t even see the stern(船尾) of the boat. They decided to try one more spot before going home. Late that afternoon, the fog cleared and the sun started shining. On their return voyage, about 11 kilometres away from Catalina Island, Pisano noticed something yellow floating in the water.
Strasser steered(驾驶) the boat closer and Pisano jumped into the water. He swam toward the figure and grabbed the life jacket. Fortunately, Louise was saved and quickly sent to hospital. The little girl soon recovered, but the search for Louise’s father, sister and mother was in vain.
Louise was adopted by her aunt and uncle. She attended college, got married in 2013 and gave birth to a son. In her late 20s, Louise began to wonder about her rescuers. She even tried to find them but no luck. One day, Louise came across a magazine article featuring Pisano talking about the 1986 rescue.

C Mental problems. D. A decreased ability.
7. What does the author suggest people do in the last paragraph?
A. Enjoy the benefits of technology.
B. Decrease the time spent on digital devices.
C. Remove the apps informing new messages.
D. Watch longer videos while waiting at traffic lights.
C 5. D 6. A 7. B

B. Learn from failure.
C. Refer to big brands’ ideas.
D. Put all your energy into it.

B Be brave and practice often.
C. You can try the following ways.
D. Why did you choose the destination?
E. Then you may make a new friend.
F. Correct your pronunciation if possible.
G. You can continue with a question using where, what, why, or how.

上文“So how can we continue a conversation in English?(所以我们如何维持一段英语对话呢?)”
根据上文“Listen to the other person attentively, so that you can ask a follow-up question.(仔细倾听对方,这样你就可以问一个后续的问题)”可知,要认真听别人说什么以便提出后续的问题,空前“For example, let’s say the other person tells you, “I just got back from a trip to Canada.”(例如,假设别人跟你说,“我刚从加拿大旅行归来。”)” 符合语境,与后文的两个问题“Where did you go in Canada? What was your favorite place there?(你去加拿大哪里?你最喜欢哪个地方?)”相呼应。故选G项。
【18题详解】
根据上文“You could just answer, “No, I haven’t.”(你可以直接回答:“不,我没有。”)”可知,针对别人提出的问题可以直接回答“是”或“不”,结合后文“You could answer: “No, but I plan to see it soon. How about you?”(你可以回答:“没有,但是我打算尽快去看。你呢?”)”可知,此处是提供另一种回答,比起回答“是”或“不”多说一点,故A项“或者,你可以多说点”引起下文。故选A项。
空处是段落主题句,根据本段中“Do not worry about your pronunciation.(不要担心你的发音)”及“be brave and speak in English with someone who does not look too busy(勇敢些,和那些看起来不太忙的人用英语交谈)”可知,本段建议要勇敢说出来,多练习。
根据上文“When you are traveling in an English-speaking country and have some free time, be brave and speak in English with someone who does not look too busy.(当你在讲英语的国家旅行时,有空就勇敢地跟那些看不上不太忙的人士对话)”可知,在说英语的国家旅行时,可以找陌生人对话,E项“然后你可能会交到一个新朋友”承接上文,讲述上文做法可能的结果。

sb. be reported to have done sth. It was reported that they had accomplished many “firsts”。故填to have accomplished。
故填a。
since when表示“从……时候起”,与从句中的现在完成时have stayed对应。故填when。
故填to enter。
故填on。
故填had been。

注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;
Realizing Pisano was the very person she was looking for, Louise decided to find him.
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Louise recognized her rescuer the moment she saw Pisano.
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Realizing Pisano was the very person she was looking for, Louise decided to find him. For a very long time, she had been expecting a chance to meet Pisano and Strasser personally and express her gratitude to her rescuers. Without any delay, she contacted the magazine, asking for the detailed information of Pisano. That evening, Louise finally dialed the number. When there came the voice of Pisano, Louise could feel her heart beating wildly. Though it was about 1,000 kilometers from where Pisano lived, Louise was determined to fly to meet Pisano.
Louise recognized her rescuer the moment she saw Pisano. Taking a deep breath, Louise stepped forward and grasped the hands of Pisano tightly. “I’m Louise”, she said, her voice trembling with excitement and tears rolling down her cheeks. Pisano, now in his sixties, hugged Louise and patted her gently. Amid hugs, tears and surprise, Louise’s dream of finding her rescuers came true and now that she’d reunited with them, she hoped to stay connected forever.
