CLIMATE CHANGE REQUIRES THE WORLD’S ATTENTION We have known about climate change for decades. There is little doubt that Earth is getting warmer and warmer (see the graph). A warming ocean and atmosphere along with melting ice and rising sea levels provide evidence of a dramatic change in the global climate. decade /ˈdekeɪd/n. Great changes have taken place in the city over the past few decades.(在过去几十年里,这座城市发生了巨大的变化。) doubt /daʊt/n. There is no doubt that he is a talented musician.(毫无疑问,他是一位有才华的音乐家。) evidence /ˈevɪdəns/n. The police found some evidence at the crime scene.(警方在犯罪现场找到了一些证据。) dramatic /drəˈmætɪk/adj. There has been a dramatic increase in house prices recently.(最近房价急剧上涨。) In 2013, a lot of people were shocked by a news photo of a dead polar bear that was found on Norway’s Arctic island of Svalbard. According to the scientists who found its dead body, all that remained of the “natural” polar bear was “skin and bones”. An expert who has studied polar bears for many years said that from the position of its dead body, the bear appeared to have starved and died. Experts claimed that low sea - ice levels caused by climate change meant the bear could not hunt seals as before, so it had to travel greater distances in order to find food. This alarming case showed how the increase in temperature had an impact on Earth’s ecology. shock /ʃɒk/v. The news of his sudden death shocked everyone.(他突然去世的消息震惊了所有人。) remain /rɪˈmeɪn/v. Only a few ruins remain of the ancient castle.(那座古堡只剩下一些废墟了。) starve /stɑːv/v. Many people starved to death during the famine.(在饥荒期间,许多人饿死了。) claim /kleɪm/v. He claimed that he had seen a UFO.(他声称自己看到了不明飞行物。) alarming /əˈlɑːmɪŋ/adj. The alarming increase in crime rate is a serious problem.(犯罪率令人担忧的上升是一个严重的问题。) impact /ˈɪmpækt/n. The new policy has a great impact on the local economy.(这项新政策对当地经济有很大的影响。) ecology /ɪˈkɒlədʒi/n. We should pay more attention to the protection of ecology.(我们应该更加关注生态保护。) Then what is causing the increase in the global average surface temperature? Climate scientists often mention a key climate process called the “greenhouse effect”, which has two common meanings: the “natural” greenhouse effect and the “man - made” greenhouse effect. The “natural” greenhouse effect refers to the fact that heat from the sun enters the atmosphere and warms Earth’s surface as short - wave radiation. The heat is released back into space at longer wave lengths. Greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, such as methane and carbon dioxide, trap some of the heat, keeping Earth’s climate warm and habitable. Without this process, Earth could not sustain life. However, the “man - made” greenhouse effect has now become a big problem. When people produce huge amounts of extra greenhouse gases by burning fossil fuels, more heat energy is trapped in the atmosphere and causes Earth’s surface temperature to rise quickly. mention /ˈmenʃn/v. He mentioned that he would go on a trip next month.(他提到他下个月要去旅行。) radiation /ˌreɪdiˈeɪʃn/n. Too much radiation is harmful to our health.(过多的辐射对我们的健康有害。) trap /træp/v. The cage is used to trap wild animals.(这个笼子是用来捕捉野生动物的。) habitable /ˈhæbɪtəbl/adj. This planet is not habitable without water.(没有水,这个星球不适合居住。) sustain /səˈsteɪn/v. The plants can't sustain life without sunlight.(植物没有阳光就无法维持生命。) fossil /ˈfɒsl/n. Coal is a kind of fossil fuel.(煤是一种矿物燃料。) There is strong and comprehensive evidence that the rise in temperature has led to an increase in extreme weather and natural disasters worldwide, not only causing serious damage, but also costing human lives. Climate scientists have warned that if we do not take appropriate actions, this warming trend will probably continue and there will be a higher price to pay. In fact, news reports are frequently broadcast about extreme rainstorms and heatwaves causing deaths and economic losses. comprehensive /ˌkɒmprɪˈhensɪv/adj. We need a comprehensive plan to solve this problem.(我们需要一个全面的计划来解决这个问题。) extreme /ɪkˈstriːm/adj. The extreme weather conditions make it difficult to travel.(极端的天气状况使出行变得困难。) disaster /dɪˈzɑːstə(r)/n. The earthquake was a great disaster for the local people.(地震对当地人民来说是一场巨大的灾难。) damage /ˈdæmɪdʒ/n. The flood caused a lot of damage to the crops.(洪水对庄稼造成了很大的损害。) warn /wɔːn/v. The teacher warned the students not to play with fire.(老师警告学生不要玩火。) appropriate /əˈprəʊpriət/adj. Wearing a suit is appropriate for a job interview.(穿西装适合参加求职面试。) trend /trend/n. The trend of the stock market is upward.(股市呈上升趋势。) frequently /ˈfriːkwəntli/adv. He frequently goes to the library.(他经常去图书馆。) heatwave /ˈhiːtweɪv/n. The heatwave has affected the lives of many people.(热浪影响了许多人的生活。) Continued greenhouse gas emissions will result in further warming and long - lasting changes to the global climate. This requires the attention of people all over the world. Governments need to consider policies and taking appropriate actions and measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. As individuals we also reduce our “carbon footprint” by restricting the amount of carbon dioxide our lifestyles produce. It is our responsibility to seize every opportunity to educate everyone about global warming, along with its causes and impacts, because this is the most serious issue affecting all of us on this planet. So what will you do to help? emission /ɪˈmɪʃn/n. The factory's emissions have polluted the air.(工厂的排放物污染了空气。) restrict /rɪˈstrɪkt/v. We should restrict our spending this month.(我们这个月应该限制开支。) carbon /ˈkɑːbən/n. Carbon dioxide is a greenhouse gas.(二氧化碳是一种温室气体。) footprint /ˈfʊtprɪnt/n. We should try to reduce our carbon footprint.(我们应该努力减少我们的碳足迹。) seize /siːz/v. We should seize every chance to improve our English.(我们应该抓住每一个机会提高我们的英语水平。) issue /ˈɪʃuː/n. The environmental issue is becoming more and more serious.(环境问题变得越来越严重。)
