If you could work from any location in the world, where would you go? Picture filling in a spreadsheet on a sandy Caribbean island, or maybe a little rooftop cafe in Rome where you can sip great coffee while editing a social media video. More and more countries are offering digital nomad (游民) visas and therefore the chance to work remotely, from wherever you’d like to.
This trend is growing, with a 2023 report indicating 11% of US workers identifying as digital nomads, a figure projected to rise by over 20 million in five years. Initially, digital nomads were mostly freelancers like social media managers or software developers, but now even traditional professionals like accountants and lawyers are embracing this lifestyle. But what is the life of a digital nomad really like?
Rowena Hennigan, who writes for Harvard Business Review, is a digital nomad along with her family. They have a “home base” in Spain but frequently go away for workcations that can last from weeks to months. She says, “compared to a traditional model of raising children, remote working has allowed my family to move away from that kind of intensity, and this way, we all get to move at a more sustainable and healthy pace.” Plus, her family are regularly exposed to new cultures, languages and natural beauty.
However, it doesn’t work for everyone. Francesca Specter, a writer for The Guardian, decided to country-hop and her “office” included beaches, cafes and coworking spaces. But along with struggling to find reliable Wi-fi and fighting terrible loneliness, she wrote that she felt envious as she cooled her overheating laptop in the shade while holidaymakers relaxed by the pool. She said, “I was firefighting dull concerns, such as missing luggage or sleep loss after an overnight flight delay.”
So, it’s not for everyone, but if you ever feel like escaping the rat-race, why not give it a go?
4. What is the advantage of being a digital nomad according to the text?
A. A higher income. B. A better work-life balance.
C. A flexible work location. D. A faster career promotion.
5. Who was probably a digital nomad originally?
A. A blogger. B. A lawyer.
C. An athlete. D. An accountant.
6. What does the word “workcations” in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Changing jobs frequently. B. Working while on vacation.
C. Touring in different countries. D. Taking breaks between jobs.
7. What is the author’s attitude towards digital nomads?
A. Oppositive. B. Supportive. C. Dismissive. D. Indifferent.
C 5. A 6. B 7. B
根据第一段中“More and more countries are offering digital nomad (游民) visas and therefore the chance to work remotely, from wherever you’d like to. (越来越多的国家开始提供数字游民签证,从而为人们提供了远程工作的机会,无论你想在哪里工作都可以)”可知,数字游民的优势在于工作地点灵活。故选C项。
【5题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段中“Initially, digital nomads were mostly freelancers like social media managers or software developers, but now even traditional professionals like accountants and lawyers are embracing this lifestyle. (最初,数字游牧民大多是自由职业者,如社交媒体经理或软件开发人员,但现在,即使是会计师和律师等传统专业人士也在接受这种生活方式)”可知,最初数字游民多为自由职业者,博主属于此类。故选A项。
根据画线词的上文“They have a “home base” in Spain but frequently go away(他们在西班牙有一个“大本营”,但经常去国外)”下文“that can last from weeks to months. She says, “compared to a traditional model of raising children, remote working has allowed my family to move away from that kind of intensity, and this way, we all get to move at a more sustainable and healthy pace.” Plus, her family are regularly exposed to new cultures, languages and natural beauty.
通读全文,尤其是最后一段“So, it’s not for everyone, but if you ever feel like escaping the rat-race, why not give it a go? (所以,这并不适合所有人,但如果你想逃离激烈的竞争,为什么不试一试呢)”可知,文章首先介绍了越来越多国家提供数字游民签证,数字游民这一趋势在不断发展的现象,接着通过讲述不同数字游民的经历,展示了这种生活方式的利与弊,最后建议想逃离竞争的人尝试这种生活方式。由此可知,作者是支持数字游民生活方式的。故选B项。

Hadeda ibises, known as “African alarm clocks” for their loud calls, have long legs and thin beaks (鸟喙) and shiny feathers on their wings. Historically restricted to northeastern South Africa, hadedas have significantly expanded their range to many urban areas.
Various ibises use remote-touch to detect movements of prey (猎物) in the soil and locate their hidden place. This ability is facilitated by a sensory organ in their beaks, called the bill-tip organ, which developed during the time of the dinosaurs. My recent research confirmed that hadedas have this“sixth sense” and found it is closely tied to soil moisture (湿度) levels.
We conducted sensory tests with hadedas in bird cages. We presented them with boxes of soil containing buried worms (虫), masking any sounds with white noise and mixing dead worms into the soil to remove scent cues (气味线索). The birds consistently found live worms faster than dead ones, indicating they are able to sense movements of prey and use remote-touch to find them.
Further testing revealed that hadedas found worms more quickly in wetter soils. If the soil was too dry, they lost this ability and had to rely on random searching. These findings suggest that the hadedas’ expansion in SouthAfrica is related to increased artificial watering systems. They require wet soil to use remote-touch effectively, which could explain their absence in dry regions. Droughts and heatwaves, expected to worsen with climate change, could threaten their population by making prey detection more challenging.
The study highlights the broader implications for other remote-touch hunting birds, many of which are already endangered. As soil moisture levels decrease, these birds could become more at risk, stressing the importance of considering sensory requirements in conservation efforts.
8. What do we know about hadeda ibises?
A. They are known for shiny feathers. B. They barely see any rise in numbers.
C. They recall images of the dinosaurs. D. They have a specialized sensory organ.
9. Why were white noise and dead worms used in the experiment?
A. To get a more reliable result. B. To add experimental items.
C. To copy natural habitats. D. To avoid disturbing the subjects.
10. What does the research suggest about the impact of climate change on hadedas?
A. Climate change will decrease their reliance on soil moisture.
B. Droughts could make it more difficult for them to find prey.
C. Increased rainfall will help them relocate to urbanized areas.
D. Rising temperatures could increase their feeding efficiency.
11. What does the text mainly talk about?
A. The specialty of hadedas’ organs. B. The masters of dry land hunting.
C. Hadedas’ prey detection in wet soil. D. Hadedas ibises’ urban expansion.
D 9. A 10. B 11. C
根据第二段中“Various ibises use remote touch to detect movements of prey (猎物) in the soil and locate their hidden place. This ability is facilitated by a sensory organ in their beaks, called the bill tip organ, which developed during the time of the dinosaurs. (各种朱鹭利用远程触觉来探测土壤中猎物的移动并定位它们的藏身之处。这种能力得益于它们喙中的一种感觉器官,叫做喙尖器官,它在恐龙时代就已经形成了)”可知,噪鹮有一个专门的感觉器官。故选D项。
【9题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段中“We presented them with boxes of soil containing buried worms (虫), masking any sounds with white noise and mixing dead worms into the soil to remove scent cues (气味线索). The birds consistently found live worms faster than dead ones, indicating they are able to sense movements of prey and use remote touch to find them. (我们给它们提供装有埋着虫子的土壤盒子,用白噪音掩盖任何声音,并将死虫子混入土壤中以消除气味线索。这些鸟总是比找到死虫子更快地找到活虫子,这表明它们能够感知猎物的移动并利用远程触觉来找到它们)”可知,使用白噪音和死虫子是为了排除声音和气味线索的干扰,从而得到更可靠的实验结果,证明噪鹮是通过远程触觉感知猎物的。故选A项。
根据第四段中“Droughts and heatwaves, expected to worsen with climate change, could threaten their population by making prey detection more challenging. (随着气候变化,预计干旱和热浪将加剧,这可能会使猎物探测变得更具挑战性,从而威胁到它们的数量)”可知,干旱会让噪鹮更难找到猎物。故选B项。
【11题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,结合第二段中“My recent research confirmed that hadedas have this ‘sixth sense’ and found it is closely tied to soil moisture (湿度) levels. (我最近的研究证实,噪鹮有这种‘第六感’,并发现它与土壤湿度水平密切相关)”以及后文围绕噪鹮在不同湿度土壤中探测猎物的研究内容可知,本文主要讲的是噪鹮在湿润土壤中探测猎物的情况。故选C项。

AI is currently being used in various ways. So what does that mean? Does it mean the world will soon be overrun by robots? However, when it comes to customer service, AI cannot completely replace human interaction, for now at least.
Actually, all customer service interactions have two aspects: emotion and urgency. New AI tools can handle high-urgency situations quickly, but as to high-emotion situations, no AI can deal with them successfully. A robot might be able to recognize you’re trying to check in for a flight recently canceled, but the emotional aspect is entirely un-programmable. Perhaps the passenger has increasingly high emotions about the flight being canceled because he is flying to an important business meeting. Cases like this can create high-stress moments for the customer. Only a person can understand the difference.
High-stress moments tend to stay with customers forever, so it’s important to have a plan in place. Good companies are better at determining which cases AI can handle on its own and which cases need to be handled by a human with AI assistance. In high-emotion cases, there’s no substitute (替补) for the personal touch of a human. Passengers whose luggage is lost are going to seek out an employee to help them locate their bags. Although AI can be used to locate their bags, it can hardly deal with passengers’ high emotions.
The conversation around AI now is too focused on the question of how AI can replace human interaction, which is missing the point. The aim of AI shouldn’t be to replace human interaction, but to improve it. The question here won’t be how far we can push AI, but how we can use our imagination to continue reinventing (改良) the problem-solving process.
12. What is implied in paragraph 1?
A. AI has had control over the human being.
B. AI can totally replace human interaction.
C. AI can handle high-emotion cases easily.
D. AI still has its own limitations at present.
13. Why is the example of a canceled flight mentioned in paragraph 2?
A. To highlight the passengers’ high emotions.
B. To prove the efficiency of AI handling urgency.
C. To show AI can handle high-emotion cases well.
D. To stress the advantage a person has over AI.
14. Why should companies have a plan for high-stress moments?
A. High-stress moments require more AI tools.
B. High-stress moments can be handled by AI alone.
C High-stress moments are unforgettable for customers.
D. High-stress moments are ignored by most companies.
15. What will we focus on when using AI to handle customer service?
A. Replacing humans with new AI tools.
B. Paying attention to solving problems.
C. Avoiding making trouble for customers.
D. Trying to invent more new AI tools.
D 13. D 14. C 15. B
根据第一段的“However, when it comes to customer service, AI cannot completely replace human interaction, for now at least.(然而,在客户服务方面,人工智能还不能完全取代人类互动,至少目前如此。)”
根据第二段的“New AI tools can handle high-urgency situations quickly, but as to high-emotion situations, no AI can deal with them successfully. Only a person can understand the difference.(新的人工智能工具可以快速处理高度紧急的情况,但对于高度情绪化的情况,没有人工智能可以成功处理。机器人也许能识别出你正在办理最近取消的航班的值机手续,但情感方面是完全无法编程的。也许乘客因为要去参加一个重要的商务会议而对航班被取消的情绪越来越高。这样的情况会给客户带来很大的压力。只有人能理解其中的差别。)”可知,第2段提到了取消航班的例子是为了强调人类相对于人工智能的优势。故选D。
【14题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段的“High-stress moments tend to stay with customers forever, so it’s important to have a plan in place.(高压力时刻往往永远伴随着客户,所以制定一个适当的计划很重要。)”
根据最后一段的“The question here won’t be how far we can push AI, but how we can use our imagination to continue reinventing (改良) the problem-solving process.(这里的问题不是我们能让AI走多远,而是我们如何利用我们的想象力继续改造解决问题的过程。)”

Due to a medical misdiagnosis (误诊), Susan, 34, had been left sightless, and was suddenly thrown into a world of darkness, anger, frustration and self-pity. And all she had to depend on was her husband, Mark.
Mark was an officer and he loved Susan with all his heart. When she first lost her sight, he watched her sink into despair. He was determined to help his wife gain confidence to become independent and return to her normal life again. But how would he do that?
Susan used to take the bus to work, but now she was too frightened to face the whole world. Mark decided to convince Susan to take the bus again. Perhaps one day she could enjoy a city tour all by herself or buy some daily grocery in the supermarket three stops away. But she was still so moody and sensitive. How would she react?
One day, Mark summoned up his courage and said “Honey, life shall move on, let’s try taking the bus as the first step, OK?” Just as he predicted, Susan was scared at the idea of taking the bus on her own. “I’m blind!” she responded bitterly. “How am I supposed to know where I am going? I feel like you’re abandoning me.”
Mark’s heart broke hearing these words, but he knew what had to be done. He promised Susan he would ride the bus with her until she got the hang of it. And that was exactly what happened. For a whole week, Mark accompanied Susan on the bus. He taught her how to rely on her other senses, specifically her hearing, to determine where she was and how to adapt to her new environment. He helped her befriend the bus drivers who could watch out for her, and save her a seat.
Finally, Susan decided to try the trip on her own. Mark encouraged her and decided to continue watching out for her until she got off the bus, only in secret.

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
With the help of her walking stick, she slowly made it to the bus stop. Hearing the bus arrive, Susan got on alone and sat in the seat that the driver had reserved for her. She was nervous but excited all the way until she got off the bus at the stop smoothly, where Mark was waiting for her. Hugging Susan gently, Mark said he was proud of her. For the rest of the week, Susan went on her own perfectly and she had never felt better. On Friday morning, as she was getting off the bus, the driver said, “Do you know you are very lucky?” Hearing this, Susan felt curious.
She asked the driver, “Why do you say that I’m very lucky?” The driver responded, “You know, every morning for the past week, a gentleman in a military uniform has been watching you as you get off the bus until you safely enter your office building. You are one lucky lady.” Tears of happiness poured down Susan’s cheeks. Although she couldn’t see him physically, she had always felt Mark’s presence. She was so lucky, for her husband had given her a gift she didn’t need to see to believe - the gift of love that can bring light where there is darkness.

This ability is facilitated by a sensory organ in their beaks called the bill-tip organ, which developed during the time of the dinosaurs.

14. Why should companies have a plan for high-stress moments?
