The publication of its Maltese translation will further enrich cultural exchanges between China and Malta,” says Salvatore Giuffrè, a Maltese sinologist and the translator of the book. Giuffrè has been studying Chinese since his teenage years. During his time as a Chinese major student in Italy, he came into contact with classical Chinese. “I needed to learn classical Chinese to grasp the central meaning of Chinese literary culture and philosophy,” he explains. Consequently, he translated the book directly from the original version. “Lunyu was composed in a dense (紧凑的) and brief manner, which makes understanding it rather challenging,” he states. Giuffrè usually referenced versions of the book written in modern Chinese to explain certain terms that he found unclear, obscure or hard to understand. He also added comments and explanations to make the text easier for Maltese readers to understand. Giuffrè dedicated approximately two years to making the book accessible to Maltese readers, particularly young students, through translation. Currently, the Maltese version is available for local readers. It includes an introduction to Confucius’s life, the era he lived, his teachings, and the key concepts, terms, names and figures mentioned in the book. “I aimed to make it accessible to a broader readership,” Giuffrè states. “I hope my translation will aid in the spread of Chinese culture and philosophy in Malta.” He expresses the hope that cooperation between China and Malta in the publishing sector will foster opportunities for additional translation projects of literary works. 4. But what about short, intense periods of exercise? A team of scientists at UC Santa Barbara has taken a closer look and their study was recently published in Communications Psychology. “One of the most consistent findings in the literature is that exercise programs — something like a plan you would follow, say, three times a week over several months or years — improve thinking skills and can even promote brain cell growth,” said Barry Giesbrecht, a professor in the Department of Psychological & Brain Sciences and senior author of the study. “But studies looking at the effects of single, intense periods of exercise are much more mixed.” Focusing on subjects between 18 ― 45 years old, first author Jordan Garrett — who graduated with his Ph. D. from the department in June-and the team reviewed thousands of exercise studies published between 1995 and 2023 to find common patterns. Based on their analysis, cycling and high-intensity interval training (HIIT) produced the most reliable improvements in memory, attention, decision-making skills, information, processing, and other mental abilities. “We found that high-energy activities had the largest effects,” Giesbrecht said. “Also, the effects were stronger for studies that tested cognition (认知) after exercise, as opposed to during exercise. And lastly, the effects of exercise lasting less than 30 minutes were greater than those lasting over 30 minutes. Our work showed the strongest evidence for a positive effect of single bouts of exercise on cognition and that this evidence was impacted by a variety of factors.” “Another interesting result is that the overall effect of a single period of exercise was generally small,” Giesbrecht said, noting that besides the variability (可变性) across the experiments, the enhancements may also be small because they are typically measured when the physical activity is not related to the cognitive task. This raises the “interesting” theory, he added, that perhaps using tasks that require the integration of actions of our body and cognitive systems may result in more significant benefits. Giesbrecht and his team indicated that they plan to test this idea. 8. Why does the author mention consistent workouts in paragraph 1? A. To emphasize the importance of regular exercise. B. To introduce a contrast with short, intense exercise. C. To explain the necessity of doing consistent exercise. D. To compare the benefits of different exercise duration. 9. What is paragraph 3 mainly about? A. The method and key findings of the study. B. The challenges of analyzing large datasets. C. The historical background of exercise research. D. Future plans to integrate exercise with cognitive tasks. 10. What was one significant finding regarding the duration of exercise and its cognitive effects? A. Longer exercise sessions are always better. B. Exercise must last at least one hour for benefits. C. Duration of exercise had no impact on cognition. D. Exercise lasting less than 30 minutes had larger effects. 11. What will the follow-up study focus on? A. Combining physical movement with mental tasks. B. Extending the duration of single exercise sessions. C. Comparing different types of high-energy exercises. D. Analyzing age-related differences in exercise effects. 【答案】8. B 9. A 10. D 11. A 【解析】 【导语】本文是一篇说明文,主要讲述了关于运动对认知能力影响的研究,特别是短时间高强度运动与长期规律运动的效果对比。 【8题详解】 推理判断题。根据第一段“Years of research on exercise have long s。upported the idea that consistent workouts over time lead to both physical and mental benefits. But what about short, intense periods of exercise?(多年的运动研究一直支持长期规律运动对身心有益的观点。但短时间高强度运动又如何呢?)”可知,作者提到长期规律运动是为了与短时间高强度运动形成对比。故选B。 9题详解】 主旨大意题。根据第三段“Focusing on subjects between 18―45 years old, first author Jordan Garrett—who graduated with his Ph. D. from the department in June-and the team reviewed thousands of exercise studies published between 1995 and 2023 to find common patterns. Based on their analysis, cycling and high-intensity interval training (HIIT) produced the most reliable improvements in memory, attention, decision-making skills, information, processing, and other mental abilities.(该研究的第一作者乔丹·加勒特于今年6月从该系获得博士学位,他和研究小组对1995年至2023年间发表的数千项运动研究进行了回顾,以寻找共同模式。根据他们的分析,骑车和高强度间歇训练(HIIT)在记忆力、注意力、决策能力、信息、处理和其他心理能力方面产生了最可靠的改善。)”可知,本段主要讲述了研究的方法和关键发现。故选A。 【10题详解】 细节理解题。根据文章第四段“Also, the effects were stronger for studies that tested cognition (认知) after exercise, as opposed to during exercise. And lastly, the effects of exercise lasting less than 30 minutes were greater than those lasting over 30 minutes.(此外,与在运动中测试认知相比,在运动后测试认知的效果更强。最后,持续时间少于30分钟的运动效果比时间超过30分钟的效果更好)”可知,持续不到30分钟的锻炼效果更大。故选D。 【11题详解】 推理判断题。根据第五段“This raises the “interesting” theory, he added, that perhaps using tasks that require the integration of actions of our body and cognitive systems may result in more significant benefits.Giesbrecht and his team indicated that they plan to test this idea.(他补充道,这提出了一个“有趣”的理论,即可能需要结合身体动作和认知系统的任务才能带来更显著的效果。吉斯布雷希特和他的团队表示,他们计划测试这个想法。)可知,后续研究将关注结合身体运动与认知任务。故选A。 D Sir Isaac Newton was a great astronomer. Although he did not use his reflecting telescope to discover new astronomical phenomena, he did employ it to completely transform our view of the world we inhabit and the universe at large. Reflecting telescopes use mirrors to reflect and focus light and enlarge images, distinguishing them from refractors (折射望远镜) that rely on lenses (透镜). Their simplicity in construction and ability to achieve much greater sizes than refractors have led to a transformation in our astronomical knowledge and comprehension of the universe. As light passes through glass, various colors or bands are refracted at varying angles, leading to chromatic aberration (色差) and consequently, twisted images when viewed through a lens. In the time of Newton, the technology for producing glass and lenses was still very primitive, and the challenges associated with chromatic aberration had not been adequately addressed. Today we can make lenses that have almost no chromatic aberration but we can’t make them very large. As the size of a lens increases significantly, it becomes extremely heavy, causing its own weight to distort the lens and consequently ruin the image quality. Newton’s telescope solved these problems. A mirror doesn’t allow light to pass. It simply bounces all the light off the surface. This means there’s no chromatic aberration. Plus, because we only need to bounce light off the surface, we can support the entire mirror on a base, reducing its weight. This allows us to build much larger mirrors without any distortion. While Galileo is credited with the discovery of moons around Jupiter and Halley with predicting the comet’s orbit, what Newton did do was tie in with mathematics, astronomy and our comprehension of the universe through the use of his telescope and his universal gravitation theory. The original telescope constructed by Newton is preserved and maintained by the Royal Society of London. It is showcased in London and occasionally embarks on international tours as an element of exhibitions. 12. What do we know about Newton’s telescope? A. It has a great size with complex structure. B. It relies on mirrors instead of lenses. C. It can make the image smaller than a refractor. D. It helped Newton uncover novel astronomical phenomena. 13. What problems did Newton’s telescope manage to solve? A. Restrictions on the production. B. Issues with image quality. C. Challenges of lens making. D. Limits of light’s passing angles. 14. Why does the author mention Galileo and Halley? A. To state a fact. B. To raise a point. C. To explain a concept. D. To make a comparison. 15. What is the main idea of the article? A. Newton’s telescope is preserved by the Royal Society as a historical scientific antique. B. Newton’s telescope simplified construction and enabled larger sizes compared to refractors. C. Newton’s telescope innovated astronomy by solving problems caused by lens limitations. D. Newton’s telescope achieved breakthrough improvements over refractors, observing new astronomical phenomena. 【答案】12. B 13. B 14. D 15. When you take a genetic test, scientists will analyze your DNA sample. ___17___ For example, some tests can tell if you carry genes that might increase your risk of certain diseases like breast cancer or heart conditions. This knowledge can help people take preventive measures early. However, genetic testing also raises ethical questions. ___18___ Should employers have access to this information? What if insurance companies use it to deny coverage? What if hospitals prioritize treatments based on genetic risks? These issues require careful consideration. ___19___ This needs countries to work together, set clear rules, and prevent unfair treatment. For example, the Global Alliance for Genomics and Health (GA4GH) created the “Framework for Responsible Sharing of Genomic and Health-related Data”. It unifies privacy rules in over 40 countries, letting scientists study rare diseases using anonymous genetic data. At the same time, it requires strict compliance (遵守) of laws and stops any harmful use of personal information. These actions show how global teamwork can protect people’s privacy while helping medical science move forward. Though not perfect, genetic testing offers valuable insights. By understanding our genetic risks, we can make better lifestyle choices and work with doctors to create personalized health plans. For example, individuals with a genetic tendency for heart disease might increase cardiovascular exercises and reduce saturated fat intake. ___20___ A. Ultimately, this knowledge enables proactive health management tailored to individual needs. B. They contain codes for proteins that directly affect bodily functions and health. C. To address these risks, legal frameworks must balance privacy protection with research needs. D. Laboratory technicians compare DNA samples to identify unique genetic markers. E. My parents were brought up there and they have a deep affection for the local food there. Every December, we would go to that island and spend three days revisiting the food places they adored. Our journey to the south this year started on a Friday morning. As usual, we picked one of the cozy hotels by the seaside to stay in, which was conveniently located, just a short distance from the sandy beach. From the windows of our rooms, we could enjoy a magnificent view of the blue sea stretching far. On the first evening, we had a wonderful time playing on the beach. The gentle sea breeze blew across our faces as we laughed and chased each other. After dinner, we went back to our rooms and engaged in some interesting games. My parents had a rule for our holidays, which was that we were to spend time doing things together, leaving aside TV and the Internet. The next morning, we set off for a famous scenic spot on the island, and spent the rest of the afternoon wandering around the town, visiting our favourite hawker stalls (小贩摊位). While in a coffee shop, we overheard other people talking about an earthquake that happened near an island not far from Bali. A bit concerned, we made our way back to the hotel and took a stroll along the beach, picking up seashells along the way. Looking up, I saw the sun shining brighter than I ever witnessed before. In the distance, a tree was swaying gently as if dancing in the sunlight. It never occurred to us that something dreadful was going to occur. Suddenly, I noticed an odd sight. The sea water seemed to be retreating (退去) from the shore, which was rather unusual. I hurriedly called my father to come and have a look at this strange occurrence. Father took one look and his face went pale at once. In the distance, we could see a grey line approaching the shore steadily, and it seemed to be getting higher and higher with every passing moment. 注意: (1)续写词数应为150个左右; (2)请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 My father yelled out to us, urging us to rush back to the hotel immediately. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ A long time passed before we made our way downstairs. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】My father yelled out to us, urging us to rush back to the hotel immediately. We didn’t have time to ask questions but ran as fast as we could. My heart was pounding wildly in my chest. On the way, we saw other tourists looking confused and some locals starting to panic. Once in the hotel, the staff quickly led us to the highest floor. We huddled together in a corner, listening to the terrifying sound of the approaching tsunami. Outside the windows, the once-beautiful sea had turned into a roaring monster, swallowing everything in its path. Waves crashed against the hotel building, making it shake violently. Fear filled every corner of the room, and we held each other tightly, praying for safety. A long time passed before we made our way downstairs. The hotel lobby was in a mess, with debris everywhere. When we stepped outside, the scene was devastating. The beach we had played on just the day before was unrecognizable. The sandy shore was covered with seaweed and all sorts of things that had been washed up by the waves. The hawker stalls we had visited were destroyed. Despite the chaos around us, we were grateful to be alive. We learned later that our quick response, thanks to my father’s awareness, had saved our lives. This experience in Bali not only changed our holiday but also taught us the importance of being vigilant and the preciousness of life. 看见:see/spot ②.拜访:visit/pay a visit to ③.拯救:rescue/save 情绪类 ①.迷惑的:confused/puzzled ②.感激的:grateful/thankful 【点睛】[高分句型1]. 4. What does the first paragraph do? A. To introduce the subject of the passage. B. To provide detailed information. C. To emphasize the importance of Lunyu. D. To make the passage persuasive. 5. What does the underlined word “obscure” mean in paragraph 3? A. Expressive. B. Impressive. C. Unsuitable. D. Puzzling. 6. Which of the following is TRUE about the Maltese version of Lunyu? A. It is well received by local readers. B. It mainly introduces the stories of Confucius. C. It can help young students learn about Confucius. D. It took Giuffrè about two years to make comments. 7. What can we learn from the last paragraph? A. Many Maltese began to learn Chinese culture. B. Giuffrè’s translation has a broad readership in Malta. C. Giuffrè hopes to cooperate with the Chinese publishing sector. D. Giuffrè wants to do more for a cross-cultural dialogue through publication. C Years of research on exercise have long supported the idea that consistent workouts over time lead to both physical and mental benefits. Our work showed the strongest evidence for a positive effect of single bouts of exercise on cognition and that this evidence was impacted by a variety of factors.” “Another interesting result is that the overall effect of a single period of exercise was generally small” Giesbrecht said, noting that besides the variability (可变性) across the experiments, the enhancements may also be small because they are typically measured when the physical activity is not related to the cognitive task. B The challenges of analyzing large datasets. C The historical background of exercise research. D Sir Isaac Newton was a great astronomer. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Genes, the basic units of heredity, play a crucial role in determining our physical characteristics and health conditions. ___16___ With the development of modern technology, genetic testing has become an important tool for understanding our biological makeup. E. These analyses can detect gene variations linked to inherited (遗传) diseases. F. The ownership and use of genetic information remain highly controversial (有争议的). G. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
