Scientists have tried to answer this question for centuries. Till now, one thing is clear. There are three different kinds of tears. They are basal tears(基底眼泪), reflex tears(反射眼泪)and emotional tears. Strong feelings such as joy, sadness, fear and other emotional states may cause tears. Tears are easy to appear. Your eyes produce tears all the time. In fact, you make 15 to 30 gallons(加仑)of tears each year. Being moved by a moving movie, being away from home for the first time or seeing a loved friend off can all cause tears. “The value of tears may be more important than its physical effects(作用).” Says Dr. Bylsma. He has done lots of studies on crying. He found out that people would feel better after crying if they get help when they cry. Tears give people a new way of understanding what is wrong. It is common that some people may cry when they find they are wrong. After crying, people can throw away bad things from the body. What’s more, crying can make people more relaxed. But people who try to hold back their tears or cry without tears are not helpful to feel better after crying. So next time when you want to cry, just do it. 16. But we need also to pay attention to the resident birds that nest (筑巢) on our beaches and the migratory shorebirds (迁徙的滨鸟) that arrive every year from the north. We have 18 kinds of resident shorebirds that spend all their lives in Australia, eating and breeding (繁殖) here on our beaches. But at least 37 other kinds move to Australia in spring and early summer. For most, a one-way trip from the north is some 10,000-13,000km. Some of them are smaller than the adult human hand! After making the arduous journey here, migratory shorebirds increase in weight by eating the food on the beaches. These migratory birds are very sensitive (敏感的) to disturbance (干扰). Continual disturbance can stop them from finding enough food for their journey home. Some young birds and those that do not have the energy to make the return journey will stay here over winter. Resident shorebirds face a number of different problems. Cats and dogs take adult birds as well as baby birds and eggs. Signs are often in place on the beaches to let people know of the presence of shorebirds, advising them to keep away from marked areas and to keep pets under control. Sadly, the advice is not always followed. Organizations and volunteers who find shorebird nests in open areas often place a cage (笼子) over the nest, which lets the birds come and go from the nest, but keeps larger animals out. 21. What is the purpose of the first paragraph? A. To discover causes. B. To compare facts. C. To introduce the main topic. D. To share the writer’s story. 22. What can be learned about the shorebirds in Australia? A. They are mostly from the south. B. They live in Australia all year long. C. There are 18 kinds of migratory shorebirds. D. There are more of them in spring than in winter. 23. What. does the underlined word “arduous” mean? A. Hard. B. Successful. C. Safe. D. Impossible. 24. What can happen to birds as a result of disturbance? A. they get lost. B. They get hungry. C. They get caught. D. They get cold. 25. Which of the following may be a sign mentioned in the last paragraph? A. B. C. D. 【答案】21. C 22. D 23. A 24. B 25. 根据“But we need also to pay attention to the resident birds that nest (筑巢) on our beaches and the migratory shorebirds (迁徙的滨鸟) that arrive every year from the north.” 根据“But at least 37 other kinds move to Australia in spring and early summer.”及“Some young birds and those that do not have the energy to make the return journey will stay here over winter.” 根据“For most, a one-way trip from the north is some 10,000-13,000km. Some of them are smaller than the adult human hand! After making the arduous journey here, migratory shorebirds increase in weight by eating the food on the beaches”可知,从北方来的单程旅行大约是10000-13000公里,这对于这些鸟类是很艰难的,故推出划线部分arduous意为“艰难的”。故选A。 根据“Continual disturbance can stop them from finding enough food for their journey home.” 根据“Signs are often in place on the beaches to let people know of the presence of shorebirds, advising them to keep away from marked areas and to keep pets under control.” D。 D If you are teaching English or another language, you might find your ideas are challenged. There might be different opinions of your role, which can result in misunderstandings. So what should you look out for when teaching student that are from different cultures from your own? Lauren, a teacher, wanted to make her lessons meet her learners’ needs and interests. She started to ask the students what they’d like to do on the course. One of the learners asked “Shouldn’t it be your job to tell us what we need and what we should be doing?” On the other side of the earth, Ron was facing the same problem. He believed that learners remember information best when they teach each other. So he had them take turns to give the lesson while he watched from the back of the room. A group of learners did not understand him and said he was not a good teacher. The role of education is changing, and so is the role of the teacher. Some believe that the traditional role of the teacher as a knowledge transmitter (传播者) is out of date, and that teachers should instead encourage learning, by helping learners to learn by themselves and to think seriously about the information they find. Some, however, prefer to see the teacher as the expert (专家) who is good enough to tell their learners what should be learned and what they should do to learn it. Lessons are teacher-centered in this situation, a time for learners to listen and learn. By talking about your ways and discussing the reasons behind the decisions you make, you can help learners understand how they might benefit from your choices. 26. What did Lauren ask her students? A. What kind of teacher they liked. B. What they preferred to learn in class. C. What courses they were interested in. D. What difficulty they had in taking the course. 27. Why were some learners dissatisfied with Ron? A. He didn’t do his teaching. B. He didn’t stand in the front. C. He didn’t walk in the classroom. D. He didn’t deal with any problems. 28. What is the traditional role of a teacher? A. To teach students think seriously. B. To change students’ view of life. C. To pass knowledge on to students. D. To guide students in self-study. 29. What do some people think of teachers in teacher-centered classrooms? A. They respect students’ choices. B. They ask students lots of questions. C. They decide what to learn in class. D. They develop lesson plans together with students. 30. What does the writer try to do in the last paragraph? A To offer help. B. To ask for advice. C. To compare ideas. D. To make a suggestion. B 27. A 28. C 29. C 30. 根据“She started to ask the students what they’d like to do on the course.” 根据“So he had them take turns to give the lesson while he watched from the back of the room. A group of learners did not understand him and said he was not a good teacher.” 故选A。 根据“Some believe that the traditional role of the teacher as a knowledge transmitter (传播者) is out of date,”可知,传统老师的角色是知识的传播者。 根据“Some, however, prefer to see the teacher as the expert (专家) who is good enough to tell their learners what should be learned and what they should do to learn it.” 根据“By talking about your ways and discussing the reasons behind the decisions you make, you can help learners understand how they might benefit from your choices.” E Al Larson is also known as the "Bluebird Man". 【31题详解】 根据后句“Then he started to fix up little boxes that could serve as homes for bluebirds.” 【32题详解】 根据所给空前句“At first, he started the work as a hobby to spend time in his retirement.” 及所给空后一句“After almost forty years of experience, he has recorded over 30,000 bluebirds…” 【33题详解】 根据后句“Their population began to drop after the invention of the electric chainsaw(链锯)in the 1920s.” 【34题详解】 根据“It has shown us that if we take a moment to understand the needs of a kind of animal, we'll find a way to deal with the problem.” 【35题详解】 根据“Al is a living example of how much one person can achieve when he sets his mind on a task…” 故选A。 Jiang Mengnan received the award of Person Touching China for 2021. Tragedies are happening over and over again. To prevent them from growing further, we need to keep some safety tips in mind. ●Life jackets can be a lifesaver. Don’t use air-filled or foam (泡沫) toys. Instead, use life jackets. These toys are not life jackets and are not designed to keep swimmers safe. ●Don’t try to save drowning friends. It’s easy to get yourself into danger, and you might end up becoming a drowning victim (受害者) yourself. Saving someone drowning hand in hand with a few others can be even more dangerous. It is common that some people may cry when they find they are wrong. After crying, people can throw away bad things from the body. What’s more, crying can make people more relaxed. 21. What can happen to birds as a result of disturbance? A they get lost. B. They get hungry. C. They get caught. D. They get cold. 25. Which of the following may be a sign mentioned in the last paragraph? A. B. C. D. D If you are teaching English or another language, you might find your ideas are challenged. 26 What did Lauren ask her students? A. To offer help. B. To ask for advice. C. To compare ideas. D.
