A
Images of polar bears trying hard to stay on ice are often used by groups that want to stop the loss of natural habitats. However, part of the solution lies with the polar bears themselves.
Polar bears are highly specialized. This means they have adapted to surviving in a specific area and eating specific food. Polar bears live above the Arctic Circle (北极圈) and eat fish. Their bodies are different from those of other types of bears. Polar bears have webbed feet for swimming, thicker fur and more body fat for living and swimming in icy conditions, and light-colored fur to help them blend (融合) into their environment. As a result, polar bears do not do well when they are in a non-Arctic area. They cannot run as well as other bears, they can become too hot and tire easily, and they have a hard time hunting animals that are not in the snow or ice.
Unfortunately for polar bears, climate change is reducing the size of the areas where they can live. This means the bears will finally have to leave the Arctic areas and travel farther south. However, because they are so specialized, it is unlikely that polar bears will be as strong as they once were.
Other creatures, such as crocodiles (鳄鱼), are not nearly as specialized. They live on almost every continent (洲) and in a wide variety of climates. In fact, crocodiles are one of the most adaptable animals on the planet and have survived for millions of years. When animals specialize, they often do better than less-specialized species in the same place, but if the climate or other conditions change, the specialized animals are usually the first to die off.
If polar bears are going to survive the next 100 years, they will have to adapt. Many scientists believe that polar bears may finally cross paths with brown bears and black bears. Whether these animals fight it out or fall in love to create new generations of bears remains to be seen. No matter how it happens, many hope the polar bears will live far into the future — in many different places.
1. What makes it possible for polar bears to survive in the Arctic area?
A. The unique climate condition. B. Their specialized body parts.
C. The rich food sources. D. Their excellent hunting skills.
2. The example of crocodiles is used to show .
A. the cause of climate change B. the importance of adaptability
C. the advantages of specialized animals D. the progress some animals have made
3. What will happen to specialized animals if the conditions change?
A. They will become less specialized. B. They will create new generations.
C. They will be unable to survive. D. They will make a quick adaptation.
4. What is the text mainly about?
A. What harm humans do to wildlife. B. How specialization harms polar bears.
C. Why climate change affects wildlife. D. How polar bear habitats become endangered.
B
In this age of Information, it is easy to send messages. You just click a few buttons and your message is sent. Distance is no longer an issue. But things weren’t always so easy.
In the 1848 gold was found in California. Thousands of people rushed there. Then the Pony Express was started. In 1860 and 1861, the Pony Express was the fastest way to get news to and from the West. The trail (路线) that they rode was around 2,000 miles long. It took most people weeks or months to ride that far. The Pony Express could make the trip in just 10 days. Those speeds were unheard of at that time. So how did they do it? Well, they had a good system.
The Pony Express had 184 stations along the trail. The stations were around ten miles apart. This is about how far a horse could run at the gallop (疾驰) before tiring. The rider could change to a new horse at each station. Every 75-100 miles, the rider would get to a home station. At each home station, riders would rest. Before resting, he would give his a mail bag to a new rider. The mail never stopped moving, even while the horses and riders rested.
It was a tough to ride for the Pony Express. Each rider had to weigh less than 125 pounds. Speed was the key. Most of the riders were teenage boys. They rode at a fast pace for up to 100 miles a day. If there were an emergency, one might have to ride 200 miles in a day. The ride could be hard and dangerous. Attacks by Native Americans were common, but in its time running, the Pony Express lost only one mail bag.
The Pony Express filled in an important role for a time, but it did not last. On 24 October 1861, the first telegraph (电报) line to California was finished. This connected California to the rest of the country. People could send messages in seconds. Two days later, the Pony Express closed. But the stories of brave riders live on even today.
5. Why was the Pony Express started?
A. To transport the gold to the East. B. To connect the native residents.
C. To deliver mails to and from the West. D. To build the shortest trail to the west.
6. What does paragraph 3 mainly tell us about the Pony Express?
A. The way it worked. B. The function it served.
C. The number of riders it needed. D. The network of the trials it built.
7. What was a requirement to become a Pony Express rider?
A. Being a horse owner. B. Being able to read and write.
C. Being familiar with the Indians. D. Being brave in the face of danger.
8. What can be the best title for the text?
A. A Look at the Past: Stories of Brave Riders Delivering Mail
B. Gold Rush: A Period with the Fastest Mail Service Founded
C. A Thing of the Past: Poster Riders Who Disappeared into History
D. The Pony Express: The Fastest Mail Service from 1860 to 1861

B 2. B 3. C 4. B
根据第二段“Their bodies are different from those of other types of bears. Polar bears have webbed feet for swimming, thicker fur and more body fat for living and swimming in icy conditions, and light-colored fur to help them blend (融合) into their environment.(它们的身体与其他种类的熊不同。北极熊有蹼足以适应游泳,更厚的皮毛和更多的身体脂肪以适应在冰冷的环境中生活和游泳,浅色的皮毛有助于它们融入环境)”可知,专门化的身体结构使它们能在寒冷的北极生存,故选B。
【2题详解】
推理判断题。根据倒数第二段“Other creatures, such as crocodiles (鳄鱼), are not nearly as specialized. They live on almost every continent (洲) and in a wide variety of climates. In fact, crocodiles are one of the most adaptable animals on the planet and have survived for millions of years. When animals specialize, they often do better than less-specialized species in the same place, but if the climate or other conditions change, the specialized animals are usually the first to die off.(其他生物,比如鳄鱼,就没有这么专门化。它们几乎生活在各大洲,气候也各不相同。事实上,鳄鱼是地球上适应性最强的动物之一,已经生存了数百万年。当动物专业化时,它们通常比同一地区的非专业化物种做得更好,但如果气候或其他条件发生变化,专业化的动物通常是第一个死亡的)”可推知,鳄鱼的例子被用来说明适应性的重要性。故选B。
【3题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段“Whether these animals fight it out or fall in love to create new generations of bears remains to be seen. No matter how it happens, many hope the polar bears will live far into the future — in many different places.(这些动物是决一死战,还是坠入爱河,繁衍出新一代的熊,还有待观察。无论事情如何发展,许多人都希望北极熊能在遥远的未来生活在许多不同的地方)”可知,如果条件发生变化,“专门化”的动物可能是第一批会灭绝的动物,即它们将无法存活下去。故选C。
【4题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第二段“Polar bears are highly specialized. This means they have adapted to surviving in a specific area and eating specific food.(北极熊是高度专业化的动物。这意味着它们已经适应了在一个特定的地区生存和吃特定的食物)”以及最后一段“If polar bears are going to survive the next 100 years, they will have to adapt.(如果北极熊想在未来的100年里生存下去,它们就必须适应)”结合本文主要讲了特殊的生存环境给北极熊带来的不良影响,长时间在特殊环境中生存使它丧失了对其他环境的适应能力。由此可知,这篇文章的主要内容是专业化如何伤害北极熊。故选B。
