Auantawan was born without most of his right forearm. The disability was a barrier to music when, in fifth grade, he said his music teacher wanted all the students to learn to play the recorder (竖笛).
Instead of giving up, Anantawan and his parents decided to find him a different instrument to explore his musical talent. “My family chose the violin because they thought it was the most beautiful instrument.” Anantawan said. They contacted the Toronto-area hospital near the family, asking them to create an adaptive cast (石膏) on his arm that would allow the then 10-year-old to hold the bow (琴弓) .
A group of engineers worked alongside Anantawan to build a special device. With it, Anantawan could use the bow and use his shoulder to make the sound. “From the very first note that I was playing, I was really attracted to the sound and the connection of my body to the instrument and being able to express my imagination,” he said.
Although Anantawan is grateful for the technology that allows him and others with disabilities to find access to music, he said the most important part of access is the inclusive attitude of teachers, supporters and those who encourage young learners or musicians by telling them they can do anything.
Anantawan is working to provide that space for others. As an associate professor at the Berklee College of Music, Anantawan founded the Music Inclusion Ensemble, a group of students with disabilities that provide accommodations for musicians according to their needs. Anantawan hopes to inspire people without being defined only by the challenges they face as a result of their disability.
24. Why did Anantawan’s family get in touch with the hospital?
A. To find a man-made hand for him.
B To inspire him to learn to play the recorder.
C. To add something to his right arm.
D. To gain advice on adapting a violin.
25. What does Anantawan think is the key to the disabled’s access to music?
A. Fair competitions. B. Inclusive attitudes.
C. Enough resources. D. Lasting cooperation.
26. What is the last paragraph mainly about?
A. Why Anantawan becomes active. B. What Anantawan contributes his time to.
C. How Anantawan lives in his free time. D. Who Anantawan plays music with.
27. Which of the following can best describe Anantawan?
A. Open-minded and sporty. B. Hesitant and lonely.

Attempts to genetically engineer the American chestnut tree (Darling 58) have failed, exposing the risks of rushed solutions to complex problems. In December 2023, the American Chestnut Foundation (TACF) announced it was ending its years-long effort to create a blight-resistant chestnut. These trees grew poorly, failed to resist disease, and often died.
The American chestnut, once abundant in Eastern U.S. forests, was destroyed by blight in the early 1900s. Some surviving trees sprouted from stumps or resisted the disease naturally. Efforts to restore the species have divided scientists into two camps: one advocating for natural restoration and the other for genetic engineering (GE). The GE approach started in 1989, led by researchers at SUNY-ESF with backing from industry players like Duke Energy, and Monsanto.
In 2020, researchers sought USDA approval to deregulate Darling 58. The tree was engineered with a wheat gene to combat the acid produced by chestnut blight. However, critics argued the testing period was too short to predict the tree’s long-term impact. The proposed plan to spread GE traits through wild forests sparked fears of ecological harm.
By 2023 it was revealed that years of research had mistakenly used the wrong tree variety (Darling 54). TACF withdrew support, citing poor results, reduced survival rates, and commercial conflicts involving a for-profit company. Despite setbacks, SUNY-ESF continues to push for USDA approval, claiming the trees are safe.
Meanwhile, organizations like the American Chestnut Cooperators Foundation focus on natural methods, breeding pure chestnuts with blight resistance. Hybridization with Chinese chestnuts is another method under development.
The Darling 58 debacle highlights the risks of genetic engineering and commercial motives behind GE trees. Critics argue that GE is less about forest health and more about profits from faster-growing or industrially modified trees. As the debate continues the lesson remains clear: science must proceed cautiously, especially when dealing with long-living species like trees.
28. The primary purpose of this passage is to ________.
A. criticize the use of genetic engineering on chestnut trees in forest restoration.
B. describe the main history of the American chestnut tree’s decline since the 1900s.
C. explain the controversy surrounding the restoration of the American chestnut tree.
D. promote natural breeding as the best solution for chestnut tree restoration.
29. Why did the USDA petition for Darling 58 face criticism?
A. The testing period was not long enough to predict long-term effects.
B. The genetically engineered trees were not resistant to blight.
C. The USDA was accused of favoring genetic engineering companies.
D The petition did not include input from environmental scientists.
30. According to the passage, which of the following statements is TRUE?
A. Darling 58 chestnut trees were approved for widespread planting in 2023.
B. Natural methods of restoring the American chestnut show no promise.
C. Critics believe the genetic engineering is profit-driven rather than ecological.
D. TACF fully supports SUNY-ESF’s efforts with Darling 58 chestnut trees.
31. What can be inferred about releasing genetically engineered trees into the wild?
A. It may lead to deregulation and commercialization of GE trees.
B. It will rapidly restore ecosystems with minimal risks.
C. It proves corporate interests align with environmental goals.
D. It shows GE is more reliable than natural restoration.
D
Around 200 B. C, Aristophanes, an ancient Greek librarian, developed a system of marks to break up text to make it easier to read. Before this, words were often written in one long sentence without spaces between the words. Today in many languages—including English-there is a set of rules on how to use full stops, commas and other text marks. However, some believe this is changing. Dr Robert Frost, who studies language, says people no longer use full stops and other punctuation symbols because they feel their messages are clear enough without them. So, is punctuation helpful or just troublesome?
Yes—punctuation is important
Punctuation is needed in order to make the meaning of written words clear. If a parent messaged to say, “It's time to eat, children,” this is different from “It's time to eat children”. The second sentence would probably make you want to run in the opposite direction because it sounds as though children were on the menu. The author Jonathan Pierce argues that punctuation can be used to add drama, to break up the sequence of words and change the rhythm of a sentence. “It allows writers to make sentences more interesting so the readers do not get bored,” Pierce claims. “Otherwise, the words run into each other and lose their impact.” Besides, learning the different ways punctuation marks can be used is fun. It can add a lot to the style of writing and make it clearer.
No—we don't need it
Punctuation. Even, if a sentence is badly punctuated, like this one: It can still be, understood. This short piece of text shows that it is the words that are the important part of the sentence, not the symbols between them. Oxford-based linguist Kelly Jones says, “It is the order in which the words appear that conveys the meaning, not the punctuation marks. If there is any doubt in the meaning of the sentence, people are clever enough to work out what the person is really trying to say. For instance, when people speak, they do not use punctuation and yet we can still understand each other.” Also, punctuation can be confusing—there are lots of complex rules to observe, and if it is used incorrectly it can cause more problems than if there were none, punctuation simply isn't needed.
32. What is the purpose of this passage?
A. To discuss alternative viewpoints. B. To support one argument over another.
C. To evaluate the strength of competing ideas. D. To outline historical development of language.
33. Who believes punctuation is necessary?
A. Robert Frost and Kelly Jones. B. Aristophanes and Robert Frost.
C. Jonathan Pierce and Kelly Jones. D. Aristophanes and Jonathan Pierce.
34. In paragraph 3, the underlined part is used as________.
A. a definition. B. a fact. C. an example. D. an error.
35. Which of the following can be a strong argument against Kelly Jones's opinion?
A. Punctuation adds to the effect and richness of a language.
B. Without punctuation, people would be breathless when speaking.
C. Pauses and tones in speech serve similar functions to punctuation.
D. The choice and order of words are important to conveying meaning.

第二节(满分25分)
67. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
One September day, I volunteered at the Massachusetts animal shelter. My heart sank as I heard a slight meow from an abandoned cat carrier by the door. I opened it and took the cat in my arms. Immediately, she buried her face into my arms, her skinny body shaking, but she didn’t escape as if she knew I was there to help.
The doctor estimated her age to be about six. Although weak and underweight, she could return to normal with care. Unfortunately, she tested positive for feline leukemia(猫白血病), which is infectious with only a bite, without cure. Though infected cats can also live normal, happy lives, the doctor regretfully announced she was “unfit for groups”. The only choice was for a volunteer to adopt her.
Already having four cats, I had determined not to put them through the stress of learning to live with a new member. Plus, I had agreed with my husband that we had reached the animal limit. Nevertheless, I took her home anyway and quarantined(隔离) her in a spare room.
The first few nights were difficult. I spent as much time as I could with her. Gradually, she seemed to accept her fate and waited every morning for me. Her appetite returned and soon she looked quite health y again. Before long, this cat began walking around the room as if she owned it — like a little princess, so “Princess” she was named.
Nine long months passed. While I tried to find her a home where she could be the only cat, it was fruitless and we finally accepted her presence.
Summer arrived. Every year, one shelter volunteer hosts a party. It was my turn that year. About thirty volunteers and their guests enjoyed barbecuing and sharing animal stories. Everyone wanted to see “the cat in the room”, so Princess received more than her share of attention. Jody, the Sunday morning volunteer, arrived and introduced her fiancé, Eric. We chatted for a while. Eric mentioned he once lost a cat named Queen, and was also quite interested in Princess.

By 2023, it was revealed that years of research had mistakenly used the wrong tree variety (Darling 54).
As the debate continues, the lesson remains clear: science must proceed cautiously, especially when dealing with long-living species like trees.
D. The petition did not include input from environmental scientists.

【解析】
【分析】这是一篇议论文。文章主要介绍了标点符号的发明历史以及从支持和反对两个方面论述了人们对于需不需要使用标点符号的看法。
【32题详解】
推理判断题。根据第一段中“So, is punctuation helpful or just troublesome? (那么,标点符号是有用的还是麻烦的呢?)”结合文章从支持和反对两个方面论述了人们对于需不需要使用标点符号的看法,可推知,这篇文章的目的是讨论不同的观点。故选A。
【33题详解】
细节理解题。根据第一段中“Around 200 B. C, Aristophanes, an ancient Greek librarian, developed a system of marks to break up text to make it easier to read. (大约在公元前200年,古希腊图书管理员Aristophanes发明了一种标记系统,将文本分解,使其更易于阅读)”以及第二段中“The author Jonathan Pierce argues that punctuation can be used to add drama, to break up the sequence of words and change the rhythm of a sentence. “It allows writers to make sentences more interesting so the readers do not get bored,” Pierce claims. “Otherwise, the words run into each other and lose their impact.”(作者Jonathan Pierce认为,标点可以用来增加戏剧效果,打破词语的顺序,改变句子的节奏。Pierce称:“这能让作者把句子写得更有趣,这样读者就不会感到无聊。“否则,这些词互相碰撞就会失去它们的影响力。”)”可知,Aristophanes和Jonathan Pierce认为标点是必要的。故选D。
【34题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段中“Punctuation. Even if a sentence is badly punctuated, like this one: It can still be, understood. This short piece of text shows that it is the words that are the important part of the sentence, not the symbols between them. (标点符号。即使一个句子标点符号用得不好,就像下面这句话:它仍然可以,被理解。这段简短的文字表明,单词才是句子的重要组成部分,而不是它们之间的符号)”可推知,在第三段中,下划线部分是一个例子。故选C。
【35题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段中“Oxford-based linguist Kelly Jones says, “It is the order in which the words appear that conveys the meaning, not the punctuation marks. If there is any doubt in the meaning of the sentence, people are clever enough to work out what the person is really trying to say. For instance, when people speak, they do not use punctuation and yet we can still understand each other.”(牛津大学的语言学家Kelly Jones说:“单词出现的顺序,而不是标点符号,就能传达意思。

注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
I was totally unprepared for what happened next.
__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
It turned out that Princess — I mean Queen — was lost when Eric was moving here.
__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】I was totally unprepared for what happened next. Princess walked to him as usual, but there was obviously something special about Eric. With affection, she looked up at him, rubbed against his leg, and refused to leave him. Lifting her up, Eric said “This is my cat”, his voice trembling with excitement. Feeling totally at a loss, I was speechless for a long while. Noticing my confusion and the awkward silence, Eric began to explain his remark to me patiently. It felt like a century to me before I finally grasped what he said.
It turned out that Princess — I mean Queen — was lost when Eric was moving here. Raised strictly indoors due to the virus, the cat was so frightened when taken out that she ran away. Of course, Eric was heartbroken and tried every means to find her, but all in vain. It was like the cat just disappeared into thin air. Gradually, Eric accepted the reality, so he was completely unprepared for the reunion that day. The next day, Eric took Queen away. I almost cried. Looking back, I waited almost a year for a miracle to happen, but it was worth the effort.
