It’s easy to think festivals are just about drinking and dancing, but festivals are also representatives of what a certain way of life thinks, the way they express themselves. I’ve been to over 60 festivals in 22 different countries, and I still want to experience more. One of the main reasons I enjoy going to international festivals so much is the fact that they are a microcosm of what they represent. Festivals are an opportunity to see as much as possible in a weekend into worlds so different, or even familiar, of my own.
Festivals are a fascinating insight into a group of individuals with a common understanding and the world they are living in. This is also one of the reasons I enjoy international festivals.
I ticked off a huge bucket list festival in Lake of Stars Festival in Malawi a few years ago. I was unwell and not my usual party self, but, it gave me the opportunity instead to sit and listen to the local poets. Through their poetry they enlightened me to some of the issues of the day—calling out their “fat government” and covering everything from housing, to relationships, to the nominal (名义上的) opportunities.
The importance of celebrating festivals abroad isn’t just to gather with your “tribe”. What I learned in a few poems at Lake of Stars Festival were fascinating insights into modern social issues and the Malawi of the present, which I would have had to dig deep to find out. And I probably wouldn’t have bothered to, to be honest.
Even if only for a weekend, what I learned there from the poets and artists gave me a better understanding of what life was like in Malawi.
You never know what you’re going to learn when you visit a new festival. That’s all part of the fun and expectation.
Comedy makes current social issues fun, music makes them melodic (有旋律的), while poetry makes them considered and heartfelt. Festivals bring you them all.
4. What does the underlined word “microcosm” in Paragraph 1 probably mean?
A. Different views. B. Mixed reaction.
C. Small world. D. Rare opportunity.
5. Why does the author like experiencing worldwide festivals?
A. He likes having fun with others.
B. He can learn about the world.
C. He expects to get job opportunities there.
D. He enjoys tasting a variety of drinks and food.
6. What does the author think of Lake of Stars Festival?
A. Instructive. B. Informal. C. Usual. D. Boring.
7. What is stressed in the text?
A. The author’s wishes B. The greatness of poets.
C The differences between festivals D. The significance of festivals.

Before she could even talk, Ellie Heath spent hours drawing pictures. When she grew older, the 15-year-old discovered the joy of sewing (缝纫) she says she finds it calming. She started out making small things, like jewelry and soft toys. Over time, she began making clothing. Her love of the creative work led her to open a business. A 71-year-old Swedish man “can’t put into words” how thankful he is for the new technology that quickly flew him into the small category of only ten percent of people who survive sudden heart stopping.
The man now has made a full recovery and returned home, after the speedy delivery of a defibrillator(除颤器)—via autonomous drone(无人驾驶飞机). The company behind the drone pilot project says it’s the first time in medical history, a drone has played an important part in saving a life during a heart stopping.
He was in his driveway when the attack happened. Normally, you have about ten minutes to get help in such a situation. Luckily, a telephone call was immediately placed requesting emergency services and he lived in a region that had partnered with Everdrone’s innovative life-saving programme called EMADE (Emergency Medical Aerial Delivery service). EMADE drones delivered a defibrillator to the scene—and the amount of time from the alarm(警报) until the defibrillator was safely delivered at the doorstep of the incident address was just over three minutes.
Even luckier, a doctor happened to be driving by and stopped to see if he could help. “I was on my way to work at the local hospital when I saw a man collapsed in his driveway and I immediately rushed to help,” says Dr. Mustafa Ali. After the ambulance arrived, the patient was rushed to the hospital.
The man said, “If it wasn’t for the drone I probably wouldn’t be here.”
275,000 patients in Europe and 350,000 in the US, suffer from heart stopping annually. About 70% of heart stopping occur in private homes without defibrillators on site. The chance of survival decreases by 7%—10% with each minute following the collapse(突然倒下)—and as a result, the current survival rate among heart stopping patients is merely 10%.
12. How’s the 71-year-old Swedish man now?
A. He is much better in hospital. B. He is very fine at home.
C. He still needs a defibrillator. D. He’s made a recovery in hospital.
13. How long did the old man wait for to be saved with a defibrillator?
A. About 20 minutes. B. About 10 minutes.
C. About 8 minutes. D. About 4 minutes.
14. Why was Mustafa Ali able to help the old man?
A. He was there by accident. B. People called him for help.
C. He saw a drone with a defibrillator. D. People rushed to him for help.
15. What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A. Most people in Europe and the US die from heart stopping.
B. Saving people with heart stopping quickly is important.
C. Most people can’t afford expensive defibrillators.
D. It’s necessary for every family to prepare for a defibrillator.
