Mrs.Green spent most of her free time visiting the poor. She
knew they had problems, and they needed help. She brought food,
clothes and medicine for them.
One morning she told her children about a family she had
visited the day before. The man was sick in bed. His wife could not
go out to work because she needed to take care of him. Their little
boy, Dennis, was a helper to his mother.
21
“I feel sorry for him,” she said to her own children, John,
Harry, and Clara. “He wants very much to make some money, but
I don't see what he can do.”
After their mother left the room, the children sat thinking
about Dennis. “I wish we could help him to make money,” said
Clara.
“So do I,” said Harry. “We really should do something to help
them.”
For some moments, John said nothing, but, suddenly, he cried,
“I have a great idea!”
The other children jumped up all attention (注意). When
John had an idea, it was sure to be a good one. “I tell you what
we can do,” said John. “You know that big box of corn Uncle
Mark sent us? Well, we can make popcorn, and put it into paper
bags, and Dennis can take it around to the houses and sell it.”
When Mrs. Green heard of the idea, she thought it was a good
one too. Then Mrs. Green searched (搜索) the Internet and
ordered a household (家用的) popcorn machine. After that, Mrs.
Green, together with her three children, paid another visit to the
23
family and told them about the popcorn plan. Needless to say, they
were deeply moved, especially Dennis.
With everything ready, Dennis started out on his new business.
Although it was a hard time for everybody, Dennis's business
worked out quite well. He carried the popcorn on his small bike,
going from door to door to sell it. People were surprised to see
such a little, poorly-dressed boy selling popcorn at their doors, but
finally almost all of them would buy a bag or two.

“Volunteering makes you learn about the world differently. You
can see how little things change a person's life for the better,”
Mason, a volunteer said.
The Volunteer Week is held in April every year. It is a time to
thank volunteers for what they have done. It also helps others take
their first step to become a volunteer. Making the decision to take
the first step can be the biggest problem, because people may
wonder if they will be able to do the job well. Some people worry
that they don't know other volunteers. Not having enough time is
also a problem for them.
29
The following advice can help if you have some of these
worries:
★Start out slowly and don't add too much pressure (压力).
Even a few hours a month can make a big difference in someone's
life.
★Choose a group with the same interests.
★Work with an experienced volunteer. The person has
volunteered a lot and he or she can help you solve your problems.
30
★Invite a friend or a family member to serve. It is a good
idea to volunteer with him or her.
★It is the most important to enjoy the volunteer job.
Remember that not all volunteer jobs are fantastic. Don't give up
and you'll surely find the right one.
Spend some time on volunteer work and you will see great
changes in your life.
