W: That’s really remarkable. What did you major in at university?
M: My father advised me to learn computer science, while my mom suggested business management. But I have a strong passion for modern medicine.
W: Oh, it seems that you didn’t follow their advice.

Susan helped me a lot, not only in dealing with company affairs, but also in educating the kids. I’m grateful to her, and I want to give her a surprise at our 10th anniversary party.
W: Wow, she will definitely feel happy.

B
All I had to do for the small sum of money was to take care of the old man in the neighborhood for a few hours every day. It was a peaceful task in a nice house filled with things that were rare in my own home.
Caring for him gave me a feeling of achievement. I could use part of the money to buy some books I longed for and also help my family with daily expenses. I wasn’t like those children who had nothing to do but play. I had a role that made me feel important and grown-up. I received kind words and grateful looks from the old man and his family, which made me stand out from just being an ordinary child.
In those times, children were not just for fun; they were useful. They could assist the elderly, run errands, and do simple household repairs. But now, it seems children are mainly focused on studies and hobbies. They are pampered and have few real responsibilities.
Gradually, I became better at taking care of the old man. I learned how to cook simple meals for him and keep him company in a more engaging way. He started to give me some old but valuable collectibles as a reward. I was excited to have them as they were things I could never afford before.
Still, I sometimes felt a bit overworked. But I was reluctant to complain. I knew my parents would tell me to be grateful for the opportunity. One day, when I was talking to my grandfather, I let out my feelings. He then said, “Child, you are doing a good thing. But remember, you are not defined by this job. You have your own life and dreams. The work is just a part of your experience, not the whole of you.”
Since then, I have engaged in various activities and tasks, some easy and some difficult. But I have always remembered my grandfather’s words and never let any work overshadow my sense of self or my personal goals.
24. What mainly made the author feel a sense of achievement in taking care of the old man?
A. The ability to afford personal hobbies.
B. The respect from the old man and his family.
C. The opportunity to learn new skills.
D. The praise from the neighbors.
25. Which of the following best describes the author’s trait?
A. Diligent and ambitious.
B. Capable and self-aware.
C. Sensitive and obedient.
D. Outgoing and helpful.
26. What did the author’s grandfather make him/her understand?
A. To focus on personal growth rather than just work.
B. To be more patient when dealing with difficulties.
C. To value the relationship with the elderly.
D. To be brave in asking for a better reward.
27. What is the main message the author wants to convey?
A. The importance of family support in personal development.
B. The significance of early work experience for children.
C. Not to let work define one’s identity and worth.
D. The value of helping the elderly in the community.
B 25. B 26. A 27. C
根据第二段中“I received kind words and grateful looks from the old man and his family, which made me stand out from just being an ordinary child.( 我从老人和他的家人那里得到了亲切的话语和感激的目光,这让我从一个普通的孩子中脱颖而出。)”以及 “Caring for him gave me a feeling of achievement.( 照顾他给了我一种成就感。)”
根据第四段中“Gradually, I became better at taking care of the old man. I learned how to cook simple meals for him and keep him company in a more engaging way.( 渐渐地,我变得更善于照顾老人了。我学会了如何为他做简单的饭菜,并以一种更有吸引力的方式陪伴他。)”说明作者有能力照顾老人。以及最后一段中“But I have always remembered my grandfather’s words and never let any work overshadow my sense of self or my personal goals.( 但我一直记得祖父的话,从不让任何工作掩盖我的自我意识或个人目标。)”
根据倒数第二段中“Child, you are doing a good thing. But remember, you are not defined by this job. You have your own life and dreams. The work is just a part of your experience, not the whole of you.( 然后他说:“孩子,你做了一件好事。但请记住,你不是由这份工作来定义的。你有自己的生活和梦想。工作只是你经历的一部分,而不是你的全部。”)”可知,爷爷让作者明白不能被这份工作定义,作者有自己的生活和梦想,工作只是经历的一部分,也就是要关注个人成长而不仅仅是工作。故选A项。
通读全文以及最后一段“Since then, I have engaged in various activities and tasks, some easy and some difficult. But I have always remembered my grandfather’s words and never let any work overshadow my sense of self or my personal goals.( 从那时起,我从事了各种各样的活动和任务,有些容易,有些困难。但我一直记得祖父的话,从不让任何工作掩盖我的自我意识或个人目标。)”可知,文章主要讲述了作者照顾老人的经历以及爷爷的话对作者的影响,作者从爷爷的话中领悟到即不要让任何工作掩盖自我意识和个人目标,也就是不要让工作定义一个人的身份和价值。由此可推知,作者想要传达的主要信息是不要让工作定义一个人的身份和价值。故选C项。
C
The human voice is a delicate thing. Each person’s distinctive voice is produced when air from the lungs causes the vocal cords (声带) to vibrate (震颤). These vocal cords can easily get damaged. According to a 2005 study, 30% of the population will experience a voice disorder at some point in their life.
In a study published in the journal Nature Communications this week, a group of bioengineering researchers from the University of California have put forward an attractive solution. They have designed and tested a soft patch (小片) that can be stuck onto a person’s neck, where it will pick up muscle movements and, with the help of machine-learning algorithms (算法) that process the signals, translate them into speech.
When a person loses their voice today, the easiest fix is to turn to typing, texting, or writing notes to communicate. Typing can be slow and convenient, says Jun Chen, the paper’s lead author, and writing notes is only possible in good lighting. The new solution would therefore be able to clear all these hurdles.
Dr. Chen’s device works based on something called the magnetoelastic effect. Essentially, when tiny magnetic (磁性的) bits are placed into soft materials, their magnetic properties can change as the material is stretched.
When the throat muscles move under the soft patch, the resulting magnetoelastic effects can be changed into electrical signals. In a test with eight participants, the variations can be changed by electrical signals.
Researchers recorded the signals as the subjects spoke and mouthed five different sentences. They then trained a machine-learning model which was then able to predict which of the five sentences the participants spoke-whether aloud or in silence-with more than 90% accuracy.
There is a way to go yet, for now the device can only recognize the five phrases it was trained on. Plus, to make it practical at scale, the researchers will need to collect a lot more data.
28. In paragraph 1, the author mainly wants to tell us that____.
A. lungs are easily damaged
B. the human voice is unique
C. vocal cords vibrate to produce sound
D. voice disorders are a problem worthy of attention
29. Why does the author mention the biometric effect?
A. To explain the working principle. B. To present a solution.
C. To introduce the challenge. D. To make a comparison.
30. What is the function of the soft patch?
A. Predicting five different sentences.
B. Destroying the background magnetic field.
C. Slowing the movements of throat muscles.
D. Helping turn muscle movements into electrical signals.
31. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?
A. Predicting the Importance of Voice Restoration
B. Using Algorithms in Bioengineering Research
C. Overcoming Voice Loss with an innovative Patch
D. Finding the Principle of Communication Devices
D 29. A 30. D 31. C
根据第一段“The human voice is a delicate thing. Each person’s distinctive voice is produced when air from the lungs causes the vocal cords (声带) to vibrate (震颤). These vocal cords can easily get damaged. According to a 2005 study, 30% of the population will experience a voice disorder at some point in their life.(人类的声音是一种微妙的东西。每个人独特的声音是由肺部的空气引起声带振动而产生的。这些声带很容易受损。根据2005年的一项研究,30%的人在一生中的某个阶段会经历声音障碍)”可知,本段主要想告诉我们声音障碍是一个值得关注的问题。故选D项。
【29题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段“They have designed and tested a soft patch (小片) that can be stuck onto a person’s neck, where it will pick up muscle movements and, with the help of machine-learning algorithms (算法) that process the signals, translate them into speech.(他们设计并测试了一种柔软的贴片,可以贴在人的脖子上,在那里它会捕捉肌肉运动,并在处理信号的机器学习算法的帮助下,将它们转化为语音)”以及第三段“When a person loses their voice today, the easiest fix is to turn to typing, texting, or writing notes to communicate. Typing can be slow and convenient, says Jun Chen, the paper’s lead author, and writing notes is only possible in good lighting. The new solution would therefore be able to clear all these hurdles.(如今,当一个人失声时,最简单的解决办法就是打字、发短信或写笔记来交流。该论文的第一作者Jun Chen说,打字可能既慢又方便,而且只有在良好的光线下才能写笔记。因此,新的解决方案将能够清除所有这些障碍)”和第四段“Dr. Chen’s device works based on something called the magnetoelastic effect.(陈博士的装置是基于磁弹性效应工作的)”可知,作者提到magnetoelastic effect是为了解释贴片的工作原理。故选A项。
根据第四段“Essentially, when tiny magnetic (磁性的) bits are placed into soft materials, their magnetic properties can change as the material is stretched.(从本质上讲,当微小的磁性钻头被放入柔软的材料中时,它们的磁性会随着材料的拉伸而改变)”以及第五段“When the throat muscles move under the soft patch, the resulting magnetoelastic effects can be changed into electrical signals.(当喉部肌肉在软贴片下运动时,产生的磁弹性效应可以转化为电信号)”可知,软贴片的功能是帮助将肌肉运动转化为电信号。
根据第二段“In a study published in the journal Nature Communications this week, a group of bioengineering researchers from the University of California have put forward an attractive solution. In recent years, much of my life, as a consumer has shifted to what I like to call background spending. As I’ve subscribed to more apps and streaming platforms, significant sums of my money tend to slip away each month without my ever thinking about it.
Think of it as automated trade. Spending without the trouble of spending. Acquisition without action or thought.
But while this flood of subscriptions was sold to me on the condition that it would make my life more trouble free, there was a certain shock I felt upon discovering how much I was spending without realizing each month ($179.45).
You see, the thing about background spending is that it tends to happen, well, in the background without your full attention. And there lies the point.
“Hand over your credit card details and let us take care of the rest,” these companies promise us. But by agreeing to this trade, we’ve become lazy passive consumers. And this laziness breeds more laziness because most of us can’t be bothered with conducting regular reviews of our subscription spending. We’re too lazy to even notice or cancel!
I know it’s not just me who is suddenly living life as a smooth-brained subscriber. The average consumer spends $273 per month on subscriptions, according to a 2021 study of 2,500 by digital services firm West Monroe. Not a single person surveyed knew what his actual monthly spending was.
It’s understandable why this model is so attractive to businesses. As companies questioned traditional advertising models, subscriptions offered the promise of “selling once and earning forever.” And while subscription services have been around for decades (think Wine of the Month Club), more customers have been willing to sign up thanks to the widespread availability of smartphones and the increasing ease of home delivery.
While these subscriptions promise ease and happiness, not all of us are satisfied. Last year, the Kearney Consumer Institute found 40 percent of consumers believe they have too many subscriptions. Almost half of us also think we pay too much for streaming video-on-demand subscriptions.
32. What can we know about background spending in paragraph 2?
A. Its purpose. B. Its feature. C. Its procedure. D. Its requirement.
33. What makes it possible for background spending to happen?
A. Its attractive price. B. Some people’s poor habit.
C. Its secure service. D. Some people’s addiction to it.
34. Why is the subscription model appealing to businesses?
A. It offers good home delivery services.
B. It is like traditional advertising models.
C. It is popular among smartphone producers.
D. It brings repeated profits through a single sale.
35. What’s the author’s attitude towards background spending?
A. Supportive. B. Optimistic. C. Critical. D. Unclear.
B 33. B 34. D 35. C
根据第二段“Think of it as automated trade. Spending without the trouble of spending. Acquisition without action or thought. (可以把它想象成自动交易。花钱而不用花钱的麻烦。没有行动或思想的获得。)”可知,作者是在描述背景支出的特征,即它是一种自动化的、不需要思考或行动的消费。故选B项。
【33题详解】
推理判断题。根据第五段““Hand over your credit card details and let us take care of the rest,” these companies promise us. But by agreeing to this trade, we’ve become lazy passive consumers. And this laziness breeds more laziness because most of us can’t be bothered with conducting regular reviews of our subscription spending. We’re too lazy to even notice or cancel! (这些公司向我们承诺:“交出你的信用卡信息,让我们来处理剩下的事情。”但是通过同意这种交易,我们变成了懒惰的被动消费者。这种懒惰滋生了更多的懒惰,因为我们大多数人都懒得定期检查我们的订阅支出。我们懒得去注意或取消!)”以及第六段中“Not a single person surveyed knew what his actual monthly spending was. (没有一个接受调查的人知道自己每月的实际支出是多少)”可知,是有些人的坏习惯让后台支出成为可能。故选B项。
【34题详解】
推理判断题。根据倒数第二段“It’s understandable why this model is so attractive to businesses. (可以理解为什么这种模式对企业如此有吸引力。当公司质疑传统的广告模式时,订阅提供了“一次销售,永远盈利”的承诺。虽然订阅服务已经存在了几十年(想想月度葡萄酒俱乐部),但由于智能手机的普及和送货上门的日益便利,越来越多的客户愿意注册。)”可知,因为订阅模式通过一次销售带来了重复的利润,所以对企业有吸引力。故选D项。
【35题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“While these subscriptions promise ease and happiness, not all of us are satisfied. 第二节(满分25分)
67. 阅读下面材料,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一篇完整的故事。
As the golden sun was sailing higher and higher in the east, casting its warm glow over the town, Emily, a keen photographer, started a solo journey to the famed Old Pine Scenic Area, well known for its centuries-old pine forests and winding paths. She anticipated a day filled with peaceful beauty and the opportunity to touch nature in its purest form.
Upon arrival, Emily was charmed by the quietness and splendidness of the overgrown pines that towered above, their branches whispering tales of old in the gentle morning breeze. With her camera in hand, she ventured deeper into the heart of the forest, each step further immersing her in the lively picture of greens and earthy browns.
The paths of Old Pine were many, weaving through the forest like threads of a vast, tangled (缠结的) web. Initially, Emily followed the marked trails, snapping photos of dew-kissed (带着露珠的) spider webs and squirrels dashing through the underbrush. However, as the morning turned into afternoon, she decided to stray from the beaten path to explore a more hidden area, rumored to house the eldest and most majestic pine in the reserve.
The deeper she wandered, the quieter the forest grew, except for the occasional rustle of leaves and distant birds. Focused intently on her photography, Emily scarcely noticed the shifting shadows and the subtle change in the forest. She then realized it was getting late but she had not yet found the eldest pine. And she had not only strayed off the path but was now thoroughly lost.
Panic fluttered in her chest. She attempted to backtrack, hoping to find familiar landmarks, but the forest seemed to have rearranged itself behind her. The trees stood pitiless, their trunks like silent guards that offered no guidance. With her phone’s signal frustratingly absent in the thick forest, Emily felt a surge of helplessness.
注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;
Emily remembered reading about the importance of staying calm when lost.

Nodding eagerly, Emily explained her situation to the local man.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One possible version:
Emily remembered reading about the importance of staying calm when lost. She found a relatively clear spot and decided to wait, hoping that a ranger who takes care of forest or another hiker might pass by. To keep calm, she resumed taking photos, capturing the stunning beauty of the fog-wrapped forest, each shot a stark contrast to the morning’s vibrant frames. As hours passed, the sound of footsteps crunching on dry leaves alerted Emily to the presence of another. A wave of relief washed over her as an elderly man emerged from the mist, his face creased with a kind smile beneath a wide-brimmed hat. “I thought I might find someone out here,” he said in a gentle voice, noticing Emily’s camera. “You must be here for Old Pine’s eldest.”
Nodding eagerly, Emily explained her situation to the local man. The man, who introduced himself as a local historian and knew the forest like the back of his hand. With a comforting assurance, he offered to lead her back to the main trail and then to the ancient pine she had sought. As they walked, the old man shared stories of the forest’s history and its significance to the local community. The forest, he explained, was not just a collection of trees but a living memory of the town’s heritage. Finally, they arrived at the grand old pine. Its vast trunk and overgrown branches were indeed a sight to behold, majestic and enduring. Emily captured the tree in her lens, a permanent reminder of her adventure and the lessons learned. She thanked the old man earnestly, her heart full of gratitude for the unexpected friendship and the invaluable lesson in humility and respect for nature.

30. What is the function of the soft patch?
A. Predicting five different sentences.
B. Destroying the background magnetic field.
C. Slowing the movements of throat muscles.
D. Helping turn muscle movements into electrical signals.
31. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?
A. Predicting the Importance of Voice Restoration
B. Using Algorithms in Bioengineering Research

D
32 What can we know about background spending in paragraph 2?
A. Its purpose. B. Its feature. C. Its procedure. D. Its requirement.
33. What makes it possible for background spending to happen?
A. Its attractive price. B. Some people’s poor habit.
C Its secure service.
A. Supportive. B. Optimistic. C. Critical. D. Unclear.
