【答案】13. C 14. B 15. A 16. C
【解析】
【原文】W: Look at this, Foster! Another movie star was caught cheating on his wife. And it’s front-page news!
M: Julia, what newspaper are you reading?
W: It’s the National Post. It has a lot of great stories about famous people. I like to know who’s dating whom, who’s getting divorced, who’s living where…, all that.
M: In my opinion, reading this kind of paper is a waste of time. They’re so sensational! All they report is about people’s personal lives.
W: But I feel that it’s so interesting!
M: I feel sorry for famous people. The reporters follow people around and take pictures of everything. I really think that famous people should be able to have a private life. I don’t want to see everything they do on the front page of a newspaper. Famous people are victimized by the media.
W: Well, I’m sure that movie stars know that people are curious. It’s natural. If they don’t like it, it’s too bad. Besides, I think a lot of them like all the attention.
M: But I really think there are more important things to read about in a newspaper, like what the government is doing to improve schools, or what shape the economy is in.
W: Oh. Why do you have to be so serious all the time?

B
In a foreign country, a man visited a local restaurant. He didn’t speak their language. He ordered something indecipherable (难以辨认的) off the menu. When the waiter brought him a plate of delicious looking fried noodles, he smiled and made an OK sign at the waiter with his thumb and forefinger linked in a circle. Looking angry, the waiter then picked up the dish and thrown it to his lap. What he did wrong, he wondered. Well, nothing is quite as it seems when it comes to using hand gesture in another country.
Gestures have been used to replace words in many countries, and they are often specific to a given culture. Gesture may mean something complimentary in one culture, but is highly offensive in another.
The gesture “thumb-up” is commonly misinterpreted. In English, it is popularly known as “thumbs up”, despite the fact that the action is commonly performed with only one hand. English-speaking Caucasians use it to signal “OK”, which is the same meaning as OK ring gesture. The two can in fact be used almost interchangeably.
Avoid using this gesture in Northern Greece unless you want to invite a fight. While American, British and Australian would use the thumb-up to signal hitch-hiking to the drivers, this message will not encourage a Greek driver or motorist to stop to give them a ride.
There are no right or wrong signals, only cultural differences. Lack of cultural understanding will lead to disharmony among people from different cultures. When we know what to look for, such encounters with other cultures are actually very interesting, fascinating and fun. It is certainly a great topic to discuss over a cup of coffee and cakes.
24. What did the man in the first paragraph do wrong?
A. He misunderstood the waiter. B. He didn’t realize cultural differences.
C. He ordered something off the menu. D. He made the signal in a rude way.
25. What does the underlined word in the second paragraph mean?
A. Full of admiration. B. Full of aggression.
C. Full of complexity. D. Full of certainty.
26. What will happen if you make a thumb up toward a man in Northern Greece?
A. He will stop to give you a lift.
B. He will get annoyed and fight against you.
C. He will ask you to give him a lift.
D. He will make the same signal toward you.
27. What’s the purpose of the passage?
A. To explain the meaning of different gestures.
B. To tell stories about different cultures.
C. To advise us to have an understanding of cultural differences.
D. To persuade people from different countries to live in harmony.
【答案】24. B 25. A 26. B 27. C

According to new research from the University of Cambridge in England, sheep are able to recognize human faces from photographs.
The farm animals, who are social and have large brains, were previously known to be able to recognize one another, as well as familiar humans. However, their ability to recognize human faces from photos alone is novel.
The recent study, the results of which were published in the journal Royal Society: Open Science, show the woolly creatures could be trained to recognize still images of human faces, including those of former President Barack Obama and actress Emma Watson.
Initially, the sheep were trained to approach certain images by being given food rewards. Later, they were able to recognize the images for which they had been rewarded. The sheep could even recognize images of faces shown at an angle, though their ability to do so declined by about 15 percent — the same rate at which a human’s ability to perform the same task declines.
“Anyone who has spent time working with sheep will know that they are intelligent, individual animals who are able to recognize their handlers,” said Professor Jenny Morton, who led the Cambridge study. “We’ve shown with our study that sheep have advanced face-recognition abilities, comparable with those of humans and monkeys.”
Recognizing faces is one of the most important social skills for human beings, and some disorders of the brain, including Huntington’s disease, affect this ability.
“Sheep are long-lived and have brains that are similar in size and complexity to those of some monkeys. That means they can be useful models to help us understand disorders of the brain, such as Huntington’s disease, that develop over a long time and affect cognitive abilities. Our study gives us another way to monitor how these abilities change,” Morton said.
28. According to the new research, what’s unusual about sheep?
A They have large brains.
B. They can recognize their owners.
C. They can tell animals from humans.
D. They can recognize human faces from photographs.
29. How did the researchers train the sheep?
A. By guiding them to follow their handlers.
B. By giving food rewards.
C. By showing photos of humans and monkeys by turns.
D. By showing photos of famous people.
30. What can be inferred from the passage?
A. Sheep have a higher face-recognition ability than monkeys.
B. The sheep’s face-recognition ability stays the same when shown photos at any angle.
C. The new discovery is beneficial to the study of cognitive ability changes.
D. The sheep’s face-recognition ability may prevent some disorders of the brain.
31. What’s the best title of the passage?
A. A New discovery about Sheep. B. How Sheep Recognize Each Other.
C. A Wonderful Scientist. D. The Life of Sheep.
【答案】28. D 29. B 30. C 31. A
【解析】

【29题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段中的“Initially, the sheep were trained to approach certain images by being given food rewards.(最初,羊被训练通过给予食物奖励来接近特定的图像。)”
通读全文,特别是根据第一段“According to new research from the University of Cambridge in England, sheep are able to recognize human faces from photographs.(根据英国剑桥大学的一项新研究,绵羊能够从照片中识别人脸。)”可知,本文介绍了研究发现羊能够从照片中辨别人脸,因此本文介绍的是一个关于羊的新发现,故A项正确。

Imagine a cat that does not need someone to clean up after it keeps an older person company and help them remember to take their medicine. That is the shared dream of the toy maker Hasbro and scientists at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island. The researchers received a $3-million-dollar award from the National Science Foundation for a special project. They want to find ways to add artificial intelligence, or A.I., to Hasbro’s “Joy for All” robotic cat.
The cat has already been for sale for two years. Though priced over 1000 dollars, it sold quite well. It was meant to act as a “companion” for older people. Now the project is aimed at developing additional abilities for the cat. Researchers at Brown’s Humanity-Centered Robotics Initiative are working to decide which activities older adults may need the most. They hope to make the cat perform a small number of activities very well. Such activities include
finding lost objects and reminding the person to take medicine or visit their doctor. They also want to keep the cost down to just a few hundred dollars.
It is an idea that has appealed to Jeanne Elliott. Her 93-year-old mother Mary Derr lives with her in South Kingstown. Derr has dementia (痴呆). The Joy for All cat that Elliott bought this year has become a true companion for Derr. The cat stays with Derr and keeps her calm while Eliot is at work. Elliott said a robotic cat that helps her mother to remember to take her medicine and be careful when she walks would be greater.
The researchers are trying to learn how the improved cats will complete helpful activities and how they will communicate. They say that they do not want a talking cat, however. Instead they are trying to design a cat that can move its head in a special way to successfully communicate its message. In the end, they hope to create an exchange between the human and the cat in which the human feels the cat needs them. By doing so, the researchers hope they can even help prevent feelings of loneliness and sadness among elderly people.
32. What’s the purpose of the project?
A. To relieve the pain of the elderly.
B. To promote the sales of a medicine.
C To help make the robotic cat smarter.
D. To invent a robotic cat for the elderly.
33. Compared with the old model, the new robotic cat will be ________.
A. cheaper
B. smaller
C. more talkative
D. more expensive
34. What does Paragraph 3 intend to tell us?
A. The more functions of the cat, the better.
B. The cat gives much help to the elderly.
C. There is no cure for dementia at present.
D. Mary Derr would have died without the cat.
35. What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A. A talking cat is quite popular among the elderly.
B. Feelings of sadness among the elderly are unavoidable.
C. Each family can afford such a cat in the future.
D. The feeling of being needed is vital to the elderly.
【答案】32. C 33. A 34. B 35. D

At Piedmont Middle School, a kid could run track or play tennis, but everyone wanted to be on the soccer team. Laura had dreamed of earning glory for the Falcons ever since the first grade, when her older brother Toni scored the winning goal in the county middle school championship. The day she joined the team as a sixth-grader, she felt like she could fly.
But, unfortunately, her joy didn’t last. She spent most of the season on the bench. It was all because of the huge mistake she made in her first game. She passed the ball in the completely wrong direction! Straight to an enemy in blue, who quickly shot it into the corner of the net, scoring. The coach benched Laura for the rest of the game. When the Falcons lost 1-0,she was crushed.
Now that the season was over she just wanted to forget about soccer. She clearly wasn’t good enough to play with the Falcons, and that was that.
A few days later, Laura’s mother found her lying on the sofa, watching music videos on her . phone.
“You’d be better off practicing,” her mother said.
“What for?” Laura said, rolling her eyes. “It won’t help me. I need someone to watch me and tell me how I can improve. I can’t get better by myself.”
Sighing, her mom sank down on the sofa. “Laura, for every lock, there is a key. We just have to find it.”
After a moment, she added, “What if I film you during practice to help you find ways to improve?”
“But the season’s over, Mom. No more practice, remember?”
“The best players keep practicing even when the season’s over,” her mother said. “You remember Toni spending all summer bouncing a ball off his head in the driveway. He used to run ten miles a day in the Arizona summer sun. You think he did that for fun?“
“But to practice plays I need at least one other person,” Laura protested.
Her mother patted her on the knee. “We’ll find that key, too,” she said.

【答案】The next morning, Laura’s mother shook her awake early, “Come on, Laura, it’s soccer time.” Reluctantly, Laura dragged herself out of bed, still feeling disheartened from her previous season’s disappointment. However, seeing her mother’s determination, Laura found herself unable to refuse. With a nod of encouragement, Laura began her drills, her movements slow and hesitant at first. With each repetition, however, she felt a sense of determination growing within her. With her mother’s watchful eye behind the camera, Laura focused on strengthening her legs, perfecting her footwork, and sharpening her ball control skills. The hours passed in a blur of sweat and effort, but with each practice session, Laura could feel herself growing stronger, more confident, and more capable.
When the next season came around, Laura was ready. With newfound determination and a strengthened resolve, she stepped onto the field with confidence. In the first game of the season, Laura’s hard work paid off. As the whistle blew, she moved past opponents with ease, displaying newfound agility and precision. With a swift move, she scored a spectacular goal, earning cheers from her teammates and spectators alike. On the way home, Laura’s friend couldn’t help but mention her remarkable improvement. “For every lock, there is a key!” Laura proudly exclaimed. Sitting in the front seat, Laura’s mother smiled silently, knowing that their perseverance and dedication had unlocked a new chapter of success for Laura on the soccer field.

4 Popular Places to Go This Winter
Harbin, China
China Harbin’s winter is for the brave ones—the average temperature is 1.8°F- but those who brave the cold will be rewarded with experiencing one of the world’s largest winter festivals. 2021 marks the 37th Harbin International Ice and Snow Sculpture Festival (January-March), when massive frozen structures rise and are lit up, transforming the city into a winter wonderland.
Lyon, France
Paris may be called The City of Light, but every December, light takes center stage in Lyon, France’s third-largest city. That’s when the annual Festival of Lights (around December 8) takes over, with light installations (装置)that transform the city’s streetscapes into modern works of art. The city is also home to two Christmas markets (one in La Croix-Rousse; the other at the Place Carnot; through December 25).
Lima, Peru
Peru’s capital Lima is home to the world’s highest number of cooking schools per person. Aside from its delicate dining, the city also has great cocktail bars where you can taste classic or contemporary takes on the Pisco Sour.Combine that with the oceanfront setting and temperatures in the 80s, and you’ll understand why Lima should no longer be ignored this winter.
Vermont, US
Winter in Vermont means skiing and snowboarding, Many resorts (度假胜地)have greatly upgraded their snowmaking abilities as part of a $15 million statewide program that replaced many outdated snow guns with new, low-energy models. These new machines will also improve the quality of snow surfaces and lengthen the season, meaning this will be one of the best winters for skiing and riding in Vermont in recent memory.

A. They have large brains.
B. They can recognize their owners.
C. They can tell animals from humans.
D They can recognize human faces from photographs.
D
32 What’s the purpose of the project?
A. To relieve the pain of the elderly.
B. To promote the sales of a medicine.
C. To help make the robotic cat smarter.

Now that the season was over, she just wanted to forget about soccer.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
