Do you use emojis (表情符号) on your smartphone? One of the nice things about emojis is that people from all over the world can understand them. But I have recently learned that some emojis have different meanings in China.
Take the basic smiley face emoji for example. At first, I thought it was just a normal, friendly smile. But later, I found out that it can mean something different. It can mean that someone is looking down on you or even mocking (嘲笑) you. I read online that although the emoji is smiling, its eyes are looking downward, which makes it look like a fake smile.
Or what about the smiling face with a waving hand? It certainly looks friendly enough. But actually, some people use this emoji to show that they don’t want to talk to someone—the hand is waving “goodbye”.
In fact, some emojis also have double meanings in Western countries. One of my favorite emojis is the “cry-laugh” emoji. At first, it meant “rolling on the floor laughing” or ROFL. But over the years, the meaning has changed. It is often used to describe situations that are so tragic that you can’t help but laugh to cheer yourself up.
It looks like the language of emojis changes over time, just like real languages. We should be careful how we use it when speaking to others.

Butterflies are some of the most beautiful insects in the world. However, what interests the scientists most is not their fascinating looks, but how they sense nature. They use their senses of sight, touch, hearing, smell and taste to find food, lay eggs in good places, and avoid hungry enemies.
Butterflies have large compound (复合的) eyes. No matter where the things are, on the right, on the left, before them or after them, they can see them without turning their heads. Like most insects, butterflies are very nearsighted (近视的). They are more likely to notice a sea of flowers than a single plant. Butterflies do not “see” colors such as red, green, and yellow. They are color blind. But they can sense sunlight, which tells them the direction that the sun is shining. The light on many flowers guides butterflies to honey.
How do butterflies smell? Butterflies have a very well-developed sense of smell, but it is not in their noses, since they don’t have one. Sense organs (器官) are in their feet, and many other parts of the body. They can help butterflies find their favorite flower honey food.
Do butterflies use their mouths to taste the food they find? Not really. Butterflies’ feet have sense organs that can taste the sugar in flower honey. They let the butterflies know if there is something tasty. Some female butterflies taste the plants carefully to find places to lay eggs. They feed their babies using a long tube (管道), and they get all their food from this tube as well.
Butterflies don’t have ears. Instead, they “hear” sounds through their wings by sensing changes in sound vibrations (震动). Sensory hairs are very helpful and important. For example, the hairs give butterflies information about the wind when they’re flying. And where there is rain, the hairs can also tell butterflies.
36. What do butterflies use to “smell”?
A. Their noses. B. Their feet and body.
C. Their wings and hairs. D. Their long tube.
37. How do butterflies find flower honey?
a. Sense sunlight direction.
b. Use compound eyes to notice a sea of flowers.
c. Find flower honey with smell organs in their feet.
d. Follow light reflections from flowers.
A. a→b→c→d B. b→a→c→d C. a→b→d→c D. b→a→d→c
38. Why are sensory hairs important for butterflies?
A. They help butterflies taste food.
B. They detect sound vibrations and environmental changes.
C. They guide butterflies to flowers.
D. They protect butterflies from enemies.
39. Which of the following best describes the structure of the passage?
A. B.
C. D.

第Ⅱ卷(共40分)
Ⅵ.任务型阅读。(第75-76小题各2分,第77-78题各3分,共10分)
Do you know how many hours of sleep people need daily? For students aged 6 to 11 years old, they should have 9 to 12 hours of sleep; for students aged 12 to 18 years old, they should have 8 to 10 hours of sleep; and for people who are over 18 years old, they should sleep 7 hours or more.
As we all know, enough sleep is important for teenagers. When teenagers get enough sleep, they can get stronger physically and don’t fall ill easily. They can also do better in schoolwork. Enough sleep also has much to do with their emotional stability (情绪稳定). When teenagers don’t get enough sleep, they can get angry more easily.
However, a study shows that many teenagers in America are not getting enough sleep. Here are the results. Teens need at least 8 hours of sleep at night, but results show most teens get much less 60% of middle schoolers and 70% of high schoolers report inadequate (不够的) sleep on school nights.
Why is it hard for teens to get good sleep? In fact, there is more than one reason. One of the reasons is late bedtime and early school start times. Now, more and more teenagers are having a habit of being “a night owl”, staying up later at night and sleeping longer into the morning. If they can sleep as long as they wish, many teens would get eight hours or more a night, but most school start times ask them to wake up much earlier in the morning.
The use of electronic devices (电子设备) like the smartphone and computer is another reason. Research has found that 89% or more of teens keep at least one device in their bedroom at night. Screen time late into the evening can cause sleep problems. Using these devices can keep teens excited so it might be difficult for them to fall asleep quickly. Sudden phone messages can disrupt (干扰) sleep. And being in the light from smartphones also makes people feel less sleepy.
So teens should improve their sleep environment and habits to get better sleep. Here are some tips (建议).
● Get eight hours of sleep a night on weekdays and weekends.
● Put away electronic devices at least a half-hour before bed.
● Keep your bedroom cool, dark and quiet.

Making Shadow Plays (皮影戏) on the wall is a great play. You need a light, hands and good ideas for a good show. Shadow Plays have been a play for hundreds of years in China.

But then his favorite woman died. It made him very sad. He wanted her to be back, so he asked his officials (官员) to bring the woman back to life! Of course, this was not possible, but they had to find something to help him feel better.
The officials decided to make a model of the woman. They used donkey leather (皮革) to make her shape and dressed it nice clothes.

37. How do butterflies find flower honey?
a. Sense sunlight direction.

c Find flower honey with smell organs in their feet.
D They protect butterflies from enemies.
39. Which of the following best describes the structure of the passage?
A. B.
