For a long time, I kept a selection of books on a shelf next to my bed that I called my “heart books”. To qualify for a place on the shelf, a book had to be not only one I loved, but one that mattered. There was one book that never made it onto that shelf, though I read it in high school: Writing Down the Bones by Natalie Goldberg.
I can still remember the day I bought it. It was summer and I must have been 14 or 15. Desperate to get out of my house, I rode my bike into town and walked into the bookstore. I was going through the shelf of books on writing and it caught my eye. I picked it up, read a few pages, and bought it. Then I took it with me to a park, read the first few chapters, and opened my notebook to write.
It’s a fairly straightforward writing book. Goldberg’s method is simple: you choose a topic, set a timer, and write for 10, 15, or 20 minutes without picking up your pen. Free writing, timed writing, writing topics: anyone who has taken a creative writing class may have encountered these things. It’s not earth-shattering. There was nothing particularly new or unusual about the book so I can’t say why it attracted me so much. But it changed everything. I went from being someone who enjoyed writing to being a writer.
During my teen years and early twenties, following Goldberg’s method was at the core of my identity. No matter where I was or what I was doing, I filled notebooks. When I eventually started writing fiction, I did the same thing. The “I” in my notebooks became someone else, but I held to the same practice.
This writing practice led me to a writing group in Boston. It led me to my current career. It led me, in so many ways, to myself. Becoming a writer allowed me to become so many other things: an activist, a business owner, a farmer, a baker. . . Writing is where I found my confidence. It was where I became curious about the world. From that, everything else has followed.
4. How did the author encounter Writing Down the Bones?
A. By following a selection of “heart books”.
B. By referring to a book list about writing.
C. By recommendation of Natalie Goldberg.
D. By seeking writing books on a bookshelf.
5. What does the word “earth-shattering” underlined in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Remarkable. B. Useful. C. Controversial. D. Amusing.
6. What can we infer about Writing Down the Bones?
A. It inspired the author to be a writer.
B It was the first novel the author read.
C. It made the author start to love writing.
D. It is one of the books the author reads most.
7. Which of the following is answered by the last paragraph?
A. What is the author’s life like right now?
B. What did the author do in the writing group?
C. How has the writing practice shaped the author?
D. Why did the author give up the writing practice?
C
Somewhere in the sky, lightning is forming. Although the possibility of getting struck in your lifetime is roughly 1 in 12,000, a human does provide an attractive target for lightning bolts (闪电). Here’s what you should expect if you ever find yourself in the path of lightning.
A lot can happen in the three milliseconds it takes for a lightning bolt to course through your body. Lightning strikes may leave you with deep wounds, often accompanied with third degree burns. Your clothes might even be torn by the explosive force of the surrounding air being superheated to up to 27,700 ℃. Blood vessels (血管) exploding from the electric shock and heat often create something called a Lichtenberg figure on your skin. This is a pattern of scars (伤疤) that branches out across your body like a tree.
But it doesn’t end there. You might also be faced with a lifetime of neurological (神经系统的) conditions for reasons that scientists still don’t fully understand. It’s also possible that you will suffer from pain.
In some cases, however, a lightning strike can lead to strange super talents. In a blog post, University of Miami neuroscientist Berit Brogaard writes about an incident where a surgeon who was struck by lightning developed an urge to learn to play the piano. He began to compose music he had started hearing in his head since the strike. This type of phenomenon confuses scientists.
One theory that Brogaard says is that cell death caused by being struck by lightning could cause a one-time flooding of the brain with neurotransmitters (神经递质) that are released from the dying neurons (神经元). This causes a rewiring of neurons, providing access to areas of the brain that were previously inaccessible.
Cool as it would be, you shouldn’t count on lightning turning you into a genius in one flash. Most of its results are painful, and could stay with you for the rest of your life.
8. What can we learn from the first two paragraphs?
A. 1 in 12,000 may die from lightning bolts.
B. Lightning attacks can heat bodies to 27,700 ℃.
C. Humans are the most likely target for lightning bolts.
D. Branching scars are typical after lightning attacks.
9. What happened to the surgeon after the strike?
A. He suffered a lifetime of neurological pain. B. His brain was left in a fixed state of death.
C. His unexplored brain areas were activated. D. He recalled hidden memories about music.
10. What does the underlined word “This” refer to in paragraph 5?
A. The flooding of brain's neurotransmitters. B. The cell death due to lightning strikes.
C. The rewiring of brain neurons. D. The release of dying neurons.
11. What is the text mainly about?
A. The process of lightning formation. B. The consequences of being struck by lightning.
C. The possibility of lightning making a genius. D. The chances of surviving a lightning strike.
D
Each of us individually is the accumulated (积累) product of thousands of generations that have come before us in an unbroken line. Our culture and technology today are also the result of thousands of years of accumulated and remixed cultural knowledge. Cumulative culture allowed humans to adapt to a diversity of environments and challenges. But, it is unclear when cumulative culture first developed during ancient human evolution.
“Our earliest ancestors have been successful at adapting to ecological conditions that require different kinds of problems to be solved,” said Perreault, an associate professor with the School of Human Evolution and Social Change. “Cumulative culture is key because it allows human populations to build on and recombine the solutions of prior generations and to develop new complex solutions to problems very quickly.”
As a baseline for the complexity of stone tool technologies achievable without cumulative culture, Perreault analyzed technologies used by chimpanzees (黑猩猩). He then analyzed changes in the complexity of stone tool-making techniques across the past 3.3 million years of the archaeological record to explore the origin of cumulative culture. He broke down the complexity of the stone tool technologies by the number of steps that each tool-making sequence (序列) involved.
The results suggested that from around 3.3 to 1.8 million years ago, stone tool-making sequences remained within the range of the baselines. From around 1.8 million to 600,000 years ago, making sequences began to slightly top the complexity baseline. But, after around 600,000 years ago, the complexity of making sequences rapidly increased. “By 600,000 years ago or so, ancient human populations started relying on unusually complex technologies, and we only see rapid increases in complexity after that time as well,” said Perreault.
Tool-assisted food-hunting may have been the motive for the earliest beginning of the evolution of cumulative culture. Early ancient humans, 3.4 to 2 million years ago, likely relied on strategies that require tools - like accessing meat and organs - leading to changes in brain size, lifetime and biology that set the stage for cumulative culture.
12. What does cumulative culture refer to according to the text?
A. Emphasizing individual development.
B. Paying attention to reforming social structure.
C Adapting to a changing living condition step by step.
D. Building up technological improvements over generations.
13. What’s Paragraph 3 mainly about?
A. How Perreault conducted the research. B. How important stone tool technologies were.
C. What the baseline of cumulative culture was. D. Why Perreault chose chimpanzees for the study.
14. What happened by 600,000 years ago?
A. Tool-making sequences remained unchanged.
B. The population of the earth increased sharply.
C. The ancestors began to make stone tools.
D. The technology reached a turning point.
15. Why are strategies that require tools mentioned in the last paragraph?
A. To show the result of human brains’ changes.
B. To illustrate the motive of cumulative culture.
C. To indicate the significance of common culture.
D. To stress the eating habits of human ancestors.

Mary was the art teacher for primary school students. On this particular day, she was guiding them through the process of drawing a scenic landscape. Akila yawned(打哈欠), clearly disinterested - drawing wasn’t her thing. A small group of students gathered around Tina, laughing at her unusual drawing: a sun sporting sunglasses and trees topped with ice cream cones.
Mary instructed Tina firmly but with unease, “Draw it the way I showed you.” As the lesson continued, doubt crept into Mary’s mind. Had the joy of creativity been overshadowed by the pressure to fit in? She scanned the room, observing her students’ faces – some concentrated, others uncertain. Akila’s disinterest was clear and Tina’s imaginative drawing had been met with ridicule instead of praise.
After class, Mary sat down with Tina, her tone softening, “Why did you draw the sun with sunglasses and the trees with ice creams?” she asked gently.
Tina’s eyes sparkled with a touch of rebellion (叛逆)-“I love ice cream, and I thought the sun would look cool with sunglasses. Why do we always have to draw like everyone else?”
Mary paused, her thoughts racing. Tina’s drawings weren’t just curious —they were a window into a world where imagination ruled, where rales could be bent into delightful chaos. Was she, by enforcing a rigid style, killing that very creativity?
The next morning, Mary walked into the classroom with a renewed sense of purpose. She placed a large sheet of paper in front of the class and announced a new project: they would create a collective(集体的)artwork titled “Our Dream World” with no rules. They were free to use colors, shapes, and patterns however they wished.
At first, the students hesitated, unsure of this newfound freedom. Akila leaned back, skeptical of what seemed like another pointless exercise. But Tina, her creativity no longer restricted, eagerly grabbed her crayons and began to draw with abandon. Then, Maya joined in. And then Michael...

B. It was the first novel the author read.

【答案】8. D 9. C 10. A 11. B

But it is unclear when cumulative culture first developed during ancient human evolution.
C. Adapting to a changing living condition step by step.
【答案】12. D 13. A 14. D 15. B

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Mary stood back and surveyed the creation.
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】Paragraph 1: As the students worked. Mary observed them with curiosity. She noticed how Akila, initially disinterested, had quietly chosen vibrant colors and was now blending them together to create a swirling sky filled with fantastical creatures that flew over a stone castle. Meanwhile, Tina was enthusiastically adding playful details to her section of the paper-a whimsical garden where flowers wore hats and creatures rested on the ice cream-topped trees. Mary felt a wave of relief washed over her. The room was alive with chatter and laughter, as Akila and Tina frequently exchanged ideas and inspired one another. Akila even leaned over to admire Tina’s ice cream trees and said, “That is mind-blowing!” It was wonderful to see them cooperate, their initial differences melting away in the warmth of shared creativity.
Paragraph 2: Mary stood back and surveyed the creation. The enomious canvas had transformed into a magnificent portrayal of each student’s imagination, forming a breathtaking landscape that reflected their individuality yet spoke to their collective spirit. Mary felt a sense of pride swell within her; she realized that in letting go of rigid structures, her students gave their painting an unrealistic but dream-like quality. Akila, Tina, and the rest of the class had not only embraced their own creative paths but had also nurtured each other’s ideas. They were thrilled, “It was the best painting ever! We should definitely hang it on the wall!” Inspired by the moment, Mary decided to host an exhibition of their dream world, inviting parents and other classes to admire the beauty of imagination unleashed in her classroom.
