In a few years, this area will become a natural habitat and a playground for animals and residents. This peaceful area didn’t appear naturally, but through planning and action taken by Catlin Gabel’s Tiny Forest project launched by teacher Patrick Walsh. Forests typically take hundreds of years to mature, with four stages of growth. “Tiny forests shorten the time through the planting of all four layers,” Walsh explained. The end result is a fast-growing, native forest in about 20 years. Over 600 plants from 43 species will be planted in the tiny forest, the first one in Oregon. Walsh was inspired to build a tiny forest after hearing about this idea, which emerged in Japan and has taken hold in North America. He shared his vision with seniors in his class. The seniors researched tiny forests and made a proposal resulting in Clean Water Services donating 60 trees and $ 5,000 from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Armed with these resources, Walsh and the students started working. “Something I didn’t really expect was the outpouring of students’ enthusiasm. Seeing students from all grades volunteered to contribute to the ‘dirty work’ really blew me away,” Walsh said. Senior Megan Cover has been at the school since the first grade. “I’ll graduate after working on this project, which is surely sad, but it’s really rewarding and great to be a part of this project and do my bit. We’re creating this educational space for many young kids,” Cover said. Walsh summed up his goal of the project, which is to build a place where students can enjoy and learn about nature. “The forest will obviously not solve climate change, but it would deserve the efforts if the kids think about climate change and remember the importance of reforestation (重新造林) and trees when they look at the forest.” 4. What is special about tiny forests? A. They originated in North America. B. They are usually planted in schools. C. They contain various types of trees. D. They become mature in a shorter time. 5. What surprised Walsh in the process of planting the tiny forest? A. The abundance of native tree species. B. Public concern about the environment. C. The active participation of students. D. Support from local organizations. 6. How does Megan Cover feel about the project? A. Proud. B. Hopeful. C. Excited D. Grateful. 7. What does Walsh want the forest to function as for the students? A. A source of enjoyment. B. A reminder. C. A source of inspiration. D. A witness 【答案】4. D 5. C 6. A 7. 根据文章第二段“Tiny forests shorten the time through the planting of all four layers(小森林通过种植所有四层植物来缩短时间)”可知,小树林在较短的时间内变得成熟。 根据第三段中的“Something I didn’t really expect was the outpouring of students’ enthusiasm.(我真正没有想到的是源源不断的学生的热情)”可知,Walsh没有预料到学生们的热情会如此高。 根据第四段中Megan cover的话“it’s really rewarding and great to be a part of this project and do my bit(能成为这个项目的一部分,尽自己的一份力,真的很有意义,也很棒)”可知,她为自己能够参与到小森林项目中为孩子们创造一片具有教育意义的园地感到自豪。故选A。 根据最后一段的“The forest will obviously not solve climate change, but it would deserve the efforts if the kids think about climate change and remember the importance of reforestation (重新造林) and trees when they look at the forest.(森林显然不能解决气候变化问题,但如果孩子们在看到森林时想到气候变化,并记住重新造林和树木的重要性,那么森林就值得付出努力。)” B。 C Chinese hit video game Black Myth: Wukong has taken the gaming world by storm, selling more than 10 million copies across all platforms in just three days after its release. The game is inspired by the classic Chinese novel Journey to the West. In it, players take the role of the Destined One, setting off for adventures to collect six Relics that once belonged to Sun Wukong and challenge the Celestial Court. Drawing on a rich heritage of nearly 1,000 years of Chinese culture, the game’s storyline and characters have proven difficult to understand for many players from western countries. For instance, a player shared on social media that their lack of familiarity with Journey to the West led to them consistently missing hidden treasures, finally resulting in repeated failures during a boss fight in Chapter 2. Meanwhile, some players feel overwhelmed by names like Erlang Shen and Lingxuzi, which can be difficult to pronounce for those unfamiliar with Chinese phonetics. To bridge these cultural divides, one enthusiast wrote a 200-page outline detailing Sun Wukong’s abilities across all 100 chapters of Journey to the West. Many others immersed themselves in the epic by checking out forums, TV shows, anime, manga and online encyclopedias. Through this process, western players have not only refined their gaming skills but also developed a deeper appreciation for Sun Wukong and Journey to the West. “Although many people might compare Sun Wukong to Western superheroes, I believe they are different,” said Patrick from the US. “Sun Wukong has a carefree and independent nature, unlimited by the need to set a good example for others like Spider-Man, who by contrast follows principles like ‘with great power comes great responsibility’.” Journey to the West offers a comprehensive narrative that covers a very dangerous journey, numerous encounters and the exploration of various cultures, making it a rich source for diverse storytelling types and cultural backgrounds. Perhaps these are some of the key reasons why Journey to the West has been translated into over a dozen languages, with more than 60 versions available worldwide. 8. What is the Destined One in Paragraph 2? A. The nickname of Sun Wukong in the game. B. The fictional main character of this hit game. C. One of the adventures to collect the six Relics. D. One of the six Relics belonging to the Celestial Court. 9. What does the underlined word “bridge” in paragraph 4 most likely mean? A. Get rid of. B. Take control of. C. Keep track of D. Take advantage of. 10. What can be learned about the game from the passage? A. It has gradually gained popularity among players worldwide. B Its original character Sun Wukong is similar to western superheroes. C. It has been translated into many languages with numerous versions available worldwide. D. It is rather challenging for western players due to their unfamiliarity with Chinese culture. 11. What does the text mainly talk about? A. A Chinese hit video game and its original novel Journey to the West. B. Reasons behind the success of Chinese video game Black Myth: Wukong. C. The cultural impact and western players’ reception of a Chinese hit video game. D. Challenges and benefits Black Myth: Wukong brings to the spread of Chinese culture. B 9. A 10. D 11. 根据第二段的句子“In it, players take the role of the Destined One, setting off for adventures to collect six Relics that once belonged to Sun Wukong and challenge the Celestial Court.(在这款游戏中,玩家将扮演“命中注定的人”,开始收集孙悟空的六件遗物,并向天庭发起挑战。)” 根据第三段的内容“Drawing on a rich heritage of nearly 1,000 years of Chinese culture, the game’s storyline and characters have proven difficult to understand for many players from western countries. For instance, a player shared on social media that their lack of familiarity with Journey to the West led to them consistently missing hidden treasures, finally resulting in repeated failures during a boss fight in Chapter 2. Meanwhile, some players feel overwhelmed by names like Erlang Shen and Lingxuzi, which can be difficult to pronounce for those unfamiliar with Chinese phonetics.(这款游戏拥有近千年的中国文化遗产,但它的故事情节和角色对许多西方国家的玩家来说很难理解。例如,一名玩家在社交媒体上分享说,他们对《西游记》的不熟悉导致他们不断丢失隐藏的宝藏,最终导致他们在第二章的boss战中反复失败。与此同时,一些玩家对“二郎神”和“灵须子”这样的名字感到不知所措,对于不熟悉汉语语音的人来说,这些名字很难发音。)”可知,划线单词后面的these cultural divides指的是由于对中国文化的不熟悉导致西方玩家对故事情节和角色难理解;再由划线单词后面的“these cultural divides, one enthusiast wrote a 200-page outline detailing Sun Wukong’s abilities across all 100 chapters of Journey to the West”可知,一位爱好者写了一份200页的大纲,详细介绍了孙悟空在《西游记》中所有100章的能力,肯定是为了弥合第三段提到的文化差异,所以划线单词bridge的意义为“弥合,消除”,与get rid of意义一致。故选A项。 根据第三段的内容“Drawing on a rich heritage of nearly 1,000 years of Chinese culture, the game’s storyline and characters have proven difficult to understand for many players from western countries. For instance, a player shared on social media that their lack of familiarity with Journey to the West led to them consistently missing hidden treasures, finally resulting in repeated failures during a boss fight in Chapter 2. Meanwhile, some players feel overwhelmed by names like Erlang Shen and Lingxuzi, which can be difficult to pronounce for those unfamiliar with Chinese phonetics.(这款游戏拥有近千年的中国文化遗产,但它的故事情节和角色对许多西方国家的玩家来说很难理解。 Stress can significantly affect your ability to keep a healthy weight. ___12___. As a “mode!” student, I went along with the request, even though it filled me with fear. I was small for my age, wore secondhand clothes, and cried easily. I desperately wished to remain in my seat and disappear into the background. However, there I was standing, on stage. Reading lines (台词), at least, was something I liked, So, I began to read. Within moments, the fear was gone. I was reading the part for the main character, “Star,” who possessed an optimistic view on life despite being an orphan (孤儿). I wasn’t an orphan myself, but I felt like one. My father had left us, and my mother worked during the day, attended school at night and spent her weekends buried in homework, It was easy for me to believe that Star’s words were also my own. I finished reading and quickly returned to my seat. When the teacher announced the cast list and called my name, I was lost in my thoughts. “Patty,” she repeated, “you are Star, Come and collect your lines.” “This cannot be! How is it possible?” With a racing heart, I approached the teacher to get the pages. I practiced every day — while walking to school, during lunch breaks, before bedtime, and even on weekends. In the beginning, I was worried about forgetting my lines, but I managed to learn them by heart. My confidence was gradually growing. Then came the rehearsals (排练). It was during this stage that I began to doubt my confidence once again, I was too nervous to act, I frequently forgot my lines. Then after several failures, I finally reached my breaking point. Voices enveloped me, and a warm hand took hold of mine. Through tear-filled eyes, I looked up at concerned faces. The teacher and some of my classmates had followed me. “Please don’t quit,” one of them said firmly. “You can do it. Come on!” All of a sudden, the feeling of being like an orphan disappeared. My heart was filled with warmth. Greatly encouraged and deeply moved, I bravely returned to the stage after drying my tears. The rehearsals eventually went on smoothly, setting the stage for the final performance. The day finally arrived and the performance received an enthusiastic response. The audience exploded in thunderous cheers and the teacher smiled with great satisfaction, as if saying “Great job!”. Getting off the stage, our classmates hugged each other excitedly, feeling proud of ourselves. I felt like a bird soaring through the sky. From that day on, whenever I encountered discouragement, I persevered. I will never forget that I was once a “fallen star” who managed to rise and shine through my own efforts, with the guidance of an exceptional teacher and the unexpected support of classmates. 词汇激活 行为类 ①充满了:be filled with/be full of ②拥抱:embrace/hug ③遇到:encounter/come across 情绪类 ①感动的:moved/touched ②兴奋地:excitedly/with excitement 【点睛】【高分句型1】From that day on, whenever I encountered discouragement, I persevered.(运用了whenever引导的状语从句) 【高分句型2】I will never forget that I was once a “fallen star” who managed to rise and shine through my own efforts, with the guidance of an exceptional teacher and the unexpected support of classmates.(运用了that引导的宾语从句和who引导的定语从句) 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$ 2023级高二年级第一学期期末考试英语科试题 (考试时间:120分钟 试卷满分:150分) 第一部分 听力 (共两节,满分 30 分) 第一节 (共5 小题;每小题1.5分,满分7.5分) 听下面5段对话。 How much is the shirt? D. 8. I practiced every day — while walking to school during lunch breaks, before bedtime, and even on weekends. I ran out towards the stairs and started to cry, “I can’t do it!” Para l: Suddenly, I felt several gentle hands on my arms. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Para 2: The day finally arrived and the performance received an enthusiastic response. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$
