B College professors these days face an ever - higher bar to draw the attention of their students, forced to compete with the smartphones and laptops in large lecture halls. But when your professor is a social media star, it’s a little bit easier. Tatiana Erukhimova, who teaches physics at Texas A & M University, has managed to get her students, as well as future generations, excited about the science. Known as “Dr. Tatiana” to her students and online fan base, the professor performs physics tricks with endless energy and enthusiasm. Videos of her theatrical demonstrations have got hundreds of millions of views across social media platforms. In the kid - friendly videos, Erukhimova uses a range of everyday objects in her experiments, from pingpong balls and toilet paper to sweets, bicycle wheels and hair dryers. Her department’s online page has about 2.5 million subscribers. It’s clear that she knows what it takes to get young people excited about a hard science. But it wasn’t always that way. When she first started teaching college freshman classes almost two decades ago, she struggled to attract the attention of her younger students. Fortunately, by the second semester, she found her footing, tweaking her approach to get her students interested in her classes. She’s earned more than just recognition on social media. In October, she was honored with a national award for science outreach for leadership in bringing the excitement of physics through innovative education programs, including the well-attended annual TAMU Physics and Engineering Festival and the highly popular physics videos on social media. As a leader in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) field in which women are underrepresented, she’s become a role model for some. Afiya Dhanani attended TAMU after seeing Erukhimova’s videos online. “Watching Dr. Tatiana do the experiments online, especially since she was a female leader, was more inspiring for me to even go into physics,” Dhanani said. 24.How does Tatiana make her students focus on her classes? A. By connecting abstract concepts with real life. B. By stopping students bringing phones to class. C. By adding interesting videos from the Internet. D. By making herself approachable and easygoing. 25. What does the underlined word “tweaking” in paragraph 3 probably mean? A. Understanding. B. Continuing. C. Recording. D. Changing. 26. What is paragraph 4 mainly about? A. Tatiana’s family life. B. Tatiana’s achievements. C. Ways to celebrate festivals. D. Education programs in TAMU. 27. What does Dhanani want to tell us in the last paragraph? A. She wanted to become a role model. B. She inspired others to learn physics. C. Tatiana has a positive impact on her. D. Tatiana has been very strict with her. C Drinking some alcohol (酒) was once thought to have benefits for the heart, but better research methods have thrown cold water on that. “Drinking less is a great way to be healthier,” said Dr. Timothy Naimi, who directs the Canadian Institute for Substance Use Research at the University of Victoria in British Columbia. Guidelines vary a lot from country to country but the overall trend is toward drinking less. The United Kingdom, France, Denmark, Holland and Australia recently reviewed new evidence and lowered their alcohol consumption recommendations. Ireland will require cancer warning labels on alcohol starting in 2026. “People of my age are way more accepting of it,” said Tessa Weber, 28, of Austin, Texas. She stopped drinking this year because she’d noticed alcohol was increasing her anxiety. She liked the results — better sleep, more energy — and has stuck with it. “It’s good to reevaluate your relationship with alcohol,” Weber said. How many drinks can you have per day? That depends. Drinking raises the risk of several types of cancer, including colon, liver, breast and mouth and throat. Alcohol breaks down in the body into a substance called acetaldehyde, which can damage your cells and stop them from repairing themselves. That creates the conditions for cancer to grow. “Thousands of US deaths per year could be prevented if people followed the government’s dietary guidelines, which advise men to limit themselves to two drinks or fewer per day and women to one drink or fewer per day,” Naimi said. One drink is the equivalent of about one12 - ounce (盎司) can of beer, a 5 - ounce glass of wine or a shot of liquor. Naimi served on an advisory committee that wanted to lower the recommendation for men to one drink per day. That advice was considered and rejected when the federal recommendations came out in 2020. “The simple message that’s best supported by the evidence is that, if you drink, less is better when it comes to health,” Naimi said. 28. What is Tessa Weber’s attitude to the new guideline on alcohol drinking? A. Positive. B. Doubtful. C. Unconcerned. D. Unclear. 29. What do we know about acetaldehyde? A. It encourages people to drink less. B. It benefits the repairs of heart cells. C. It keeps alcohol from breaking down. D. It contributes to the growth of cancer. 30. How much alcohol is a man recommended to drink at most per day by the US government? A. A 5-ounce glass of wine. B. A-6-ounce can of beer. C. A 10-ounce glass of wine. D. A 12-ounce can of beer. 31. What is the best title for the text? A. New Research on Types of Cancer B. Alcoholics Are on the Rise in the US C. Risks and Benefits of Drinking Alcohol D. Less Alcohol Is Better for Health D Shannon Brescher Shea’ s nine-year-old struggled with focus and following directions at home and at school. But after riding his bike, whether around the park or to school, he felt obviously calmer. “We call it moving meditation (冥想),” says Shea, who is a family biking advocate and author in Maryland. “We saw how incredibly helpful biking was for his focus, emotional regulation and ability to follow directions.” This experience isn’t unique. Research consistently shows that physical activity contributes to improving mental health. “Exercise, no matter your age, is the single best thing you can do for every organ in your body, including your brain,” says Allan Reiss, a professor and director of Brain Sciences at Stanford University School of Medicine. And while any exercise helps, a growing body of research shows bicycling is among the activities that might provide even more of a mental health boost. Scientists aren’t yet sure why, but it might have something to do with all the functional skills cyclists use. “You need to maintain your balance and process a lot of information from your environment, like deciding whether you can squeeze past a tree or how hard you need to brake,” says Reiss, “Most importantly, you’ve got to coordinate (协调), sense, process, integrate, regulate, and continually make decisions.” According to Reiss, “Research suggests that physical activity like cycling likely encourages new cell growth in areas of the brain linked to memory and problem-solving, and can support stronger connections between neurons (神经元), ultimately impacting memory and learning.” Luckily, it’s not too hard to get on a bike for most people. You should focus on the fun. To ensure riders don’ t get tired too quickly (or too bored), build in a fun stop rather than make the ride the single focus. Self-paced exploration and adventure are key to the ride. Cycling can multiply when it becomes a social project. In neighborhoods where bike lanes or other safe-to-ride pathways exist, organizing a group ride with friends might be just the ticket to less stressed, more relaxed individuals. 32. What does the author want to stress using Shea’s son’s example? A. Advantage of physical exercise regularly. B. Positive effect of riding on mental health. C. Importance of leading a relaxing lifestyle. D. Possibilities that any disease can be cured. 33. Why does cycling boost mental health more according to Reiss? A. It needs better integrated coordination abilities. B. Its outdoor exposure helps improve the mood state. C. It needs repetitive movement to help calm the mind. D. Its sense of freedom and exploration helps mind grow. 34. What is the function of the quoted statement in paragraph 4? A. Presenting experiments. B. Explaining concepts. C. Providing evidence. D. Offering suggestions. 35. What can be inferred from the last paragraph? A. Cycling with partners is recommended. B. Nonstop cycling makes the most of the ride. C. Purchasing tickets for a group ride is essential. D. Bike lane construction is promoted by communities. Characteristics of an excellent scientist The dictionary defines a scientist as a person having professional knowledge of one or more sciences, especially natural sciences. 36 Let’s look at some characteristics of an excellent scientist. But we were wrong. When we adopted Ray, a dog with a hurt that made him stop racing, things got tough. He retired due to the injury and quickly went to the adoption agency. Ray had no other place to go. Behind his sweet face hid a dark and damaged soul and an aggressive (好斗的) nature. Desperate to find him a home and not deliver him to the farm, the adoption agency rushed him to our door when we offered to adopt. Our experience with dogs and a home without other animals made us perfect candidates, and we were his best shot. Ray jumped around our house. He tried to understand the enormous world he now lived in, a strange one compared to the quarters he had known for so long. Adjustment would take time, but his inexperience, and apparently ours as well, made coexistence interesting. Patience and training with any new pet are important, but with Ray, they were vital. He didn’t listen to us, no matter how nice we were. He didn’t understand he was a pet with a name. He did not respond to commands, love, encouragement, or food. He had no idea what we expected of him. Like a creature from another planet, he had no concept of life in our world. Ray got really scared and would get angry when we left. In a madness he scratched (抓, 挠) at windows and doors whenever we left the house. Concerned for his safety and the condition of our home, we locked him in a big wooden box. But he resisted and tried to escape. The stress we encountered flooded us. Eight weeks after adopting Ray, we were ready to give up and send him back.________________ ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ But the next morning, Ray suddenly seemed to understand us.____________________________ ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 高二英语 (共7 页)1 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$ 2024-2025学年第二学期高二年级开学摸底考试英语试题答案 第一部分 听力 1-5 BCACB 6-10 ABAAB 11-15 CBCBC 16-20 BACBC 第2部分 阅读理解 第一节 阅读 21-23 DBD 24-27 ADBC 28-31 ADCD 32-35 BACA 第二节 七选五 36-40 CGBFE 第三部分 语言运用 第一节 完形 41-45 BACDB 46-50 ACDBA 51-55 CDBAC 第二节 语法填空 56.a 57.to 58.creative 59.named 60.using 61.popularity 62.to train 63. which 64.was recognized 65.steadily A Day Feeling the Impact of Technology In order to promote science education and arouse students' interest in technology, a science festival was held in the school hall last Sunday, with the theme of “Science and Technology Changing Life”. The festival featured a wide range of activities. There were science exhibitions where students could learn about robotics, artificial intelligence, and renewable energy. In addition, interactive workshops were also organized where students could get hands-on experience. The festival received an overwhelming positive response from both students and teachers. It was a great success and everyone learned a lot about the impact that technology has on our daily life. Eight weeks after adopting Ray, we were ready to give up and send him back. Ray had consumed our attention all along, showing no improvement. We realized we had only one choice: Returning Ray to the adoption agency. I knelt down beside Ray at night, hugging him tight. Tears flowed down my face as I whispered into his ear. “Please, Ray, please try harder. You must be good tomorrow, or we’ll have to send you back. We want you to stay, but you have to want it, too!” He didn’t respond. But the next morning, Ray suddenly seemed to understand us. Calm and mindful, he came when called and responded to commands. He still had a long way to go, but now exhibited a willingness to learn and behave. Steve and I breathed easier each day because he improved better and better. Within a month, Ray no longer tore at doors and windows when we left the house. He was willing to stay at home alone, and we knew no harm would fall upon him or our possessions. 词汇激活 行为类 ① 意识到:realize/be aware of ② 紧紧地抱着他:hug him tight/hold him tight 情绪类 ① 眼泪留下来:tears flowed down my face/with tears rolling down/tears run down my cheek ② 生活得自在:breathe easier/life is much lighter and easier 【点睛】 [高分句型1].
