W: That’s it! The student employment office still has two such jobs posted. I called about it this morning.
M: Do I just have to fill out an application form?
W: You also have to interview with the house owners.

More than 20 years ago, Yung-Chi Cheng, a Yale professor in drug development for cancer, had a pioneering idea: what if he could unlock the potential of ancient Chinese medicines for treating cancer? What if he could design botanical drugs that would make traditional cancer treatments work better? No one had done it before. Fellow researchers and experts advised him to change course, because developing botanical drugs was too complicated and too risky. But Cheng didn’t let the idea go.
Now, in a landmark moment in cancer research, Cheng and research partners are launching the first international clinical trial for a botanical drug, YIV-906. Shwu-Hucy Liu, a postdoctoral researcher in Cheng’s Yale lab, spent hours leafing through ancient Chinese texts at Yale’s library seeking the properties of Chinese herbs. She returned with Huang Qin Tang, a 1,800-year-old treatment for stomach illnesses, based on which the team developed a drug and tested it on one thousand mice.
What followed were years of additional testing of the drug’s effectiveness for a range of cancers in multiple human studies involving over 200 patients. The positive effects displayed again and again, YIV-906 not only reduced the side effects of radiation treatment, but also led to faster recovery and longer survival rates.
All they need now are larger data sets. When the results of the international trial are available about three years from now, YIV-906 may find itself next in a long line of breakthrough drugs developed from natural products, which includes a malaria (疟疾) treatment developed from the Chinese herb qinghao, the discovery of which led to a Nobel Prize for chemist Tu Youyou.
It has been a long journey, but if Cheng and his team are successful, it could create a new approach to treating cancer. They called the new approach “WE” medicine, a combination of Western medicine and Eastern medicine. “It’s a totally new model. I’ve met with a lot of doubt, but think the results will speak for themselves,” Cheng said.
24. What did fellow researchers initially think of Cheng’s research?
A. Creative. B. Comprehensive. C. Conventional. D. Challenging.
25. Why did Liu refer to ancient Chinese texts?
A. She wanted to question ancient treatment methods.
B. She desired to find inspiration for treating diseases.
C. She tried to document the history of Chinese herbs.
D. She determined to find a cure for stomach illnesses.
26. What does paragraph 3 mainly talk about?
A. Steps of the drug testing. B. The application of YIV-906.
C. Effects of the clinical trial. D. The effectiveness of YIV-906.
27. Why does the author mention Chinese herb qinghao?
A. To illustrate the value of botanical drugs.
B. To advocate the adoption of “WE” medicine.
C. To praise Tu’s contributions to drug development.
D. To highlight its success in medicine development.
D 25. B 26. D 27. A

根据第二段中“Shwu-Hucy Liu, a postdoctoral researcher in Cheng’s Yale lab, spent hours leafing through ancient Chinese texts at Yale’s library seeking the properties of Chinese herbs. She returned with Huang Qin Tang, a 1,800-ycar-old treatment for stomach illnesses, based on which the team developed a drug and tested it on one thousand mice.( 郑永齐在耶鲁大学实验室的博士后研究员刘淑惠(音译)花了几个小时在耶鲁大学图书馆翻阅中国古代文献,寻找中草药的特性。她带着黄芩汤回来了,黄芩汤是一种有1800年历史的治疗胃病的药物,研究小组以此为基础开发了一种药物,并在1000只老鼠身上进行了测试)”可推知,刘淑惠参考中国古代文献是因为她希望找到治疗疾病的灵感。故选B项。
【26题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第三段“What followed were years of additional testing of the drug’s effectiveness for a range of cancers in multiple human studies involving over 200 patients. The positive effects displayed again and again, YIV-906 not only reduced the side effects of radiation treatment, but also led to faster recovery and longer survival rates.( 接下来的几年里,科学家们在涉及200多名患者的多项人体研究中,对这种药物对一系列癌症的有效性进行了额外的测试。YIV-906不仅减少了放射治疗的副作用,而且恢复得更快,生存率更长,积极的效果一次又一次地显示出来)”可知,第三段主要讲了YIV-906的有效性。故选D项。

C
Media literacy (素养) is finally getting some late-arriving attention. Whether it’s the increasing awareness of political disinformation or the threat of AI, discussions about media literacy are on the rise. The adoption of media literacy in the classroom, however, stagnates.
The driving force for providing kids with media literacy skills often gets lost in the moral panic over technology and kids. Fear has overrun reason, and people can’t decide whether to blame social media, mobile devices, tech companies, or the Internet. They are concerned with claims that technology and social media are the causes of teenage mental health issues despite the weak associations. In response, too many solutions are “ostrich policies (鸵鸟政策) ” that want to ban devices and shut down social media but don’t address more fundamental issues.
Policies that set age limits on social media access and restrict devices during school to minimize disturbance can be helpful but are incomplete solutions. Social media didn’t invent bullies (霸凌) or the enormous effect of peer pressure. Social media platforms may be a new battleground, but they are not the source. Unfortunately, many current policies ignore the need to teach kids how to manage these challenges. There is frighteningly little attention paid to preparing kids to make good decisions when they will, unavoidably, get online.
On the bright side, the rapid development of AI and increasing attention to the amount of misinformation online have helped normalize the acceptance of media literacy as a core skill. While suggestions to limit inappropriate device use, increase face-to-face socialization, and engage in outdoor play arc beneficial, they do not build the core skills that will keep kids safe offline and are fundamental to well-being and life success: good citizenship, self-awareness and self-control. Those things take teaching, whether you are online or outside.
Media literacy is an essential life skill that, once learned, can be applied to any content. While waiting for public education to catch up, parents and educators can build media literacy skills at home with numerous resources, ranging from family technology contracts and discussion guides to easy activities that can be done at home with kids.
28. What does the underlined word “stagnates” in the first paragraph probably mean?
A. Gets far ahead. B. Falls apart suddenly.
C. Falls well short. D. Gets started officially.
29. What causes people’s moral panic over technology and kids?
A. Belief in the rapid growth of new technologies
B. Concern over cutting kids off from the Internet
C. Inability to balance the use of social media and health.
D. Fear of technology causing mental health issues in teenagers.
30. What does paragraph 3 of the text focus on?
A. The sources of peer pressure. B. The benefits of minimizing disturbance.
C. The problems of current policies. D. The disadvantages of social media platforms
31 Which of the following belongs to media literacy?
A. Reducing social media exposure. B. Applying critical thinking to media.
C. Increasing face-to-face interactions. D. Recognizing the dangers of social media
C 29. D 30. C 31. B
根据第一段中“Whether it’s the increasing awareness of political disinformation or the threat of AI, discussions about media literacy are on the rise.(无论是对政治虚假信息的日益意识,还是人工智能的威胁,关于媒体素养的讨论都在增加)”以及划线单词句中“The adoption of media literacy in the classroom, however, …(然而,媒体素养在课堂上的普及却……)”
根据第二段中“The driving force for providing kids with media literacy skills often gets lost in the moral panic over technology and kids. Fear has overrun reason, and people can’t decide whether to blame social media, mobile devices, tech companies, or the Internet. They are concerned with claims that technology and social media are the causes of teenage mental health issues despite the weak associations.(在对科技和孩子的道德恐慌中,为孩子们提供媒体素养技能的驱动力往往会消失。恐惧已经超越了理性,人们无法决定是归咎于社交媒体、移动设备、科技公司还是互联网。他们担心科技和社交媒体是青少年心理健康问题的原因,尽管两者之间的联系很弱)”可知,对科技的恐惧导致青少年的心理健康问题导致了人们对科技和孩子的道德恐慌。故选D项。
【30题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第三段中“Policies that set age limits on social media access and restrict devices during school to minimize disturbance can be helpful but are incomplete solutions. Social media didn’t invent bullies (霸凌) or the enormous effect of peer pressure. Social media platforms may be a new battleground, but they are not the source. Unfortunately, many current policies ignore the need to teach kids how to manage these challenges.(设置社交媒体使用年龄限制和在校期间限制使用电子设备以尽量减少干扰的政策可能会有所帮助,但这是不完整的解决方案。社交媒体并没有发明欺凌或同伴压力的巨大影响。社交媒体平台可能是一个新的战场,但它们不是源头。不幸的是,许多现行政策忽视了教育孩子如何应对这些挑战的必要性)”可知,第三段主要关注的是当前政策的问题。故选C项。
【31题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“Media literacy is an essential life skill that, once learned, can be applied to any content. While waiting for public education to catch up, parents and educators can build media literacy skills at home with numerous resources, ranging from family technology contracts and discussion guides to easy activities that can be done at home with kids.(媒体素养是一项重要的生活技能,一旦学会,就可以应用于任何内容。在等待公共教育迎头赶上的同时,父母和教育工作者可以在家里利用大量资源培养媒体素养技能,从家庭技术合同和讨论指南到可以在家里和孩子一起做的简单活动)”可知,文章强调媒体素养是一种生活技能,能应用于任何内容,是让孩子在网络世界做出正确决策,学会应对挑战等的能力。由此可推知,B 选项“对媒体运用批判性思维”属于这种能力,符合媒体素养定义。故选B项。
D
Decision fatigue (决策疲劳) is a psychological phenomenon where the quality of decisions declines after a long session of decision-making. It is caused by the limited mental energy we have for making choices each day. While many of us believe we are logical beings capable of weighing every option carefully, decision fatigue shows how our mental resources can be used up over time.
One of the key studies on this phenomenon was conducted in the context of parole hearings Researchers found that judges were more likely to approve of parole early in the day or after a meal break. As the day progressed and the judges made more decisions they were increasingly likely to maintain their previous decisions, denying parole simply because it required less mental effort.
Decision fatigue not only affects major life choices but also everyday decisions. For instance, people often report struggling to decide what to eat for dinner after a long day. Similarly, too many choices, such as when looking through streaming platforms or online stores, can leave individuals feeling confused, leading them to abandon the process entirely or settle for a less satisfying option.
To overcome decision fatigue, some well-known figures have adopted strategies to simplify their daily routines. For example, Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg is famous for wearing the same style of gray T-shirts to minimize unnecessary choices. Similarly, Nobel Prize-winning physicist Albert Einstein was known for owing multiple identical suits to avoid wasting energy on deciding what to wear each day. In a different context, author Haruki Murakami has shared that he maintains a strict daily routine, including specific writing hours and exercise, to free up mental capacity for his creative work.
Understanding decision fatigue can help us structure our lives more effectively. Prioritizing important decisions earlier in the day or setting up routines to minimize unnecessary choices are strategies to preserve mental energy. By managing our mental resources wisely, we can make sound decisions and reduce the stress associated with overwhelming choices
32. What leads to decision fatigue according to the text?
A. The lack of time to make decisions.
B. The difficulty of making logical choices.
C. The stress from making important decisions.
D. The limited mental energy for decision-making.
33. What does the study on parole hearings reveal?
A. Judges are much stricter after long breaks.
B. Decision fatigue can lead to unfair outcomes.
C. Fatigue causes judges to avoid complicated cases.
D. External factors have no impact on decision-making.
34. What does the author suggest readers shopping online do?
A. Make quick decisions. B. Compare different products.
C. Limit the number of choices. D. Choose the most popular products.
35. What is the purpose of adopting routines?
A. To reduce the stress of daily work. B. To increase decision-making quality.
C. To enhance overall life satisfaction. D. To create more decision-making chances
D 33. B 34. C 35. B
根据第一段中“It is caused by the limited mental energy we have for making choices each day. (这是由于我们每天用于做选择的精力有限)”可知,决策疲劳是由有限的决策精力导致的。故选D项。
【33题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段中“Researchers found that judges were more likely to approve of parole early in the day or after a meal break. As the day progressed and the judges made more decisions, they were increasingly likely to maintain their previous decisions, denying parole simply because it required less mental effort. (研究人员发现,法官在一天早些时候或饭后休息后更有可能批准假释。随着一天的进行,法官做出的决定越多,他们就越有可能维持之前的决定,仅仅因为减少精神努力而拒绝假释)”可知,随着法官做出的决定增多,他们因为决策疲劳而倾向于维持之前的决定,这可能导致不公平的假释结果。由此可推知,关于假释听证会的研究揭示了决策疲劳可能导致不公平的结果。故选B项。
【34题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段中“Similarly, too many choices, such as when looking through streaming platforms or online stores, can leave individuals feeling confused, leading them to abandon the process entirely or settle for a less satisfying option. (同样,太多的选择,比如在浏览流媒体平台或网上商店时,会让个人感到困惑,导致他们完全放弃这个过程或选择一个不太满意的选项)”可知,作者提到网上购物时太多的选择会让人困惑。由此可推知,作者建议网上购物的读者限制选择的数量,以避免决策疲劳。故选C项。
【35题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段中“Prioritizing important decisions earlier in the day or setting up routines to minimize unnecessary choices are strategies to preserve mental energy. (在一天中较早地优先处理重要决策或制定常规以最小化不必要的选择,是保存精神能量的策略)”可知,制定常规的目的是为了保存精神能量,从而提高决策质量。故选B项。

Achieving Success in Journalistic News Writing
No book, article or blog post can turn an ambitious writer into a successful journalist. All that it can do is to help the writer learn to write. The primary skill in learning to write is practice. ____36____
Among the most convenient subjects are the events and news in the world around us. Such topics are what skilled journalists write about, and that is why we call this form of writing “journalistic writing”.
Journalistic writing is not a special literary gymnastics that requires a special talent and an expansive vocabulary. ____37____It is using language to tell what is going on in the world. As such, it requires no special talent beyond seeing and understanding what is taking place around us, to grasp its significance and relation to other events, and to tell others what we have seen and heard.
____38____One of the chief characteristics is timeliness and relevance. It has little time to talk about the past, except in comparison with the present. It has little time to foretell the future, except in pointing out the significance of the present. Its subject is today. It is primarily concerned with facts. The writer considers himself a recorder of the things other persons are doing and thinking.
Another basic part of journalistic writing is that the writer prepares it for a definite purpose. Some writers, like novelists, write to use beautiful words and sentences. ____39____However, the writer who favors a journalistic style uses English simply to tell what he has seen and heard; he realizes that his reader cares more for the things he tells than for the way in which he tells and expresses them.
Success in journalistic writing demands two important skills. One is the inborn skill to see and understand. The other is the skill to tell what the writer has seen in a way that makes the reader see the same thing. ____40____If the writer is eager to excel, he must expand his knowledge and education so he can better understand and evaluate the things he sees and hears.
A. It will not do them any good to write news items.
B. To these imaginative literary writers, they favor expression.

The first week of my summer vacation was exciting, and my sense of freedom was so intense that it felt like I had to pack everything into that single week. The next week was a little calmer. But by the third week my two best friends had left for summer camp and my activities wound down into boredom. Getting up later each morning, I was spending more and more time with my cell phone and in front of the TV. That is when Mom reacted, declaring my phone and the TV off limits between 6:00 in the morning and 6:00 at night. It was shocking just to hear her say it.
In that first hour I felt I’d lost my senses of sight and hearing. The silence was numbing. I circled the house, going from room to room looking for something to do, asking myself what I can do? When I encountered Mom in the kitchen, I asked her, too, “What can I do?”
“That’s up to you,” she said without looking in my direction. Through the day I posed my question to her several more times, getting much the same result. Then late in the afternoon, while she was working at her computer. I dared to ask again. Instantly she swung around to look at me, and I could see that my question had a definite effect on her expression. She looked as though she had been shocked. Her jaws clenched, like she was holding her words between her teeth as they struggled to get out. She looked me straight in the eye, then smiled and said, “Well, are you up for a challenge?” “Sure what?” “Your challenge is to follow the same ant for ten minutes,” “What is so tough about that?” She smiled again.” You might be surprised.” Sometime later Mom stood beside me, timer in hand. “I’ll set the timer for ten minutes when you find your winning ant.”
注意:
(1) 续写词数应为150个左右;

I heard mom’s timer ring and then “You win, sweetie”, she said.
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Some of the ants I saw seemed to be eating something. I needed an active one, moving swiftly and purposefully. After observing for a while, I finally spotted an ant carrying a crumb larger than itself. “That’s my winning ant!” I whispered. I focused intently, following its journey through grass and over stones. I marveled at its determination and strength, which seemed almost human. Time passed unexpectedly fast as I shadowed its every move, amazed by its persistence.
I heard mom’s timer ring and then “You win, sweetie,” she said. Mom’s words snapped me back to reality. I beamed with pride, not for winning a challenge, but for discovering the small wonders of nature that I had ignored before. Suddenly, I was inspired to explore more — maybe try drawing or writing about these little creatures. The rest of the summer vacation didn’t feel boring anymore, and I even learned to appreciate time away from screens. That day marked the start of something new.

24 What did fellow researchers initially think of Cheng’s research?
A. Creative.
D To highlight its success in medicine development.

31. Which of the following belongs to media literacy?
A. Reducing social media exposure. B. Applying critical thinking to media.
C. Increasing face-to-face interactions. D. Recognizing the dangers of social media
As the day progressed and the judges made more decisions, they were increasingly likely to maintain their previous decisions, denying parole simply because it required less mental effort.

Some writers like novelists, write to use beautiful words and sentences.
C. To practice writing, one must have something to write about.
D. An ambitious writer can develop both skills if he lacks them.
E. The writer must write it now or never―without giving up quality.
F. Journalistic writing differs mainly in its subject matter and purpose.
G. Instead, it is the plainest, most reserved form of English composition.
