Four National Parks to Add to Your Bucket List
The national parks in the United States are chosen for their natural, historic, and cultural values. Here are some of those kinds of parks.
National Park of American Samoa
Closer to New Zealand than the United States, this park is one of the most remote (偏僻的) national parks. It protects a paleotropical rainforest. A third of the park is oceanic waters, with rich species. Ofu Island in the park has a protected area for snorkeling and diving, along with a famous white-sand beach. The park has a wet season that runs from November through April.
Hot Springs National Park
This park’s mountains encircle the northern edge of the city of Hot Springs, Arkansas, which is centered over 43 hot springs and 26 miles of hiking trails. Even before official park designation (指定), the city of Hot Springs had become a destination for treating physical problems. In addition to bathing, visitors come to tour high-end bathhouses built in the late Victorian age, many in Spanish style.
Indiana Dunes (沙丘) National Park
With its 15 miles of shore under the forces of Lake Michigan’s wind and waves, Indiana’s only national park has high sands from which visitors can see the skyline of Chicago across the lake. “Singing sands” may occur once a month under the best conditions. Trails lead through the park’s wetlands, dunes, and forests. The park also shelters more than 60 ancient structures.
Gates of the Arctic National Park and Preserve
This giant park is completely above the Arctic Circle. In the northern park during winter, the sun doesn’t rise for nearly a month and in summer the sun doesn’t set for nearly two months. In summer, the ground gets wet from melted ice, which helps plants grow. By August, the plants turn into bright red and yellow colors. Looking across the vast land can be confusing and big bears in the distance look like nearby little squirrels (松鼠).
21. What is special about National Park of American Samoa?
A. Some part of it is ocean. B. It lies in another country.
C. Most part of it is above the Arctic Circle. D. Its wet season runs through all year round.
22. Who will most likely take an interest in Hot Springs National Park?
A. Those who are history lovers. B. Those who like wildlife species.
C. Those who want to seek health benefits. D. Those who enjoy staying at high-end hotels.
23. What can visitors do at Indiana Dunes National Park?
A Hear “singing sands” each day. B. Pay a visit to historic buildings.
C. Enjoy 24-hour sunshine in winter. D. Watch the skyline of Lake Michigan.

When I was in primary school, I was actually a little shy. One thing that absolutely frightened me was speaking in front of many people, whether strangers or acquaintances. It was my sixth-grade teacher, Mr. Bamick, who helped me overcome that. That year we had to present four oral book reports in front of the class. Some of the kids were even glad to do it, but I was frightened to death. Mr. Bamick recognized my fear, so he told me to do a report on a book that was about something that really interested me. So I did the first report on baseball.
When it came time for me to present it to the class, Mr. Bamick cut me some slack and let me read the report rather than present it from memory. Some of my classmates laughed at me for the presentation, but Mr. Bamick encouraged me. By the end of the year I had completed all four of the oral book reports. It wasn’t easy or comfortable for me, but I did it.
Years later I realized that Mr. Bamick had a great effect on me in sixth grade. One of the opportunities I get when I win a tennis tournament (锦标赛) is to make comments to the fans who attend the match. Some of these are carried live on television and all of them are before thousands of people. It’s still not one of my favorite things to do, but, with Mr. Bamick’s help, I get through it from time to time. Before long, I was asked to bring my favorite childhood teacher to a national event in Dallas. I was excited when Mr. Bamick joined me for the event. It meant a lot to me that he was there.
We all need heroes in our lives. They can be role models or they can be important persons in our world. Mr. Bamick believed in me and helped me to believe in myself. It was he who helped me build the person I became.
24. In what aspect did Mr. Bamick help the author?
A. Improving her learning skills.
B. Winning her classmates’ trust.
C. Encouraging her to read more books.
D. Overcoming her fear of public speaking.
25. What does the underlined part “cut me some slack” mean in paragraph 2?
A. Played a funny joke on the author.
B. Gave the author a feeling of pride.
C. Made the task slightly easy for the author.
D. Asked the author to take part in a competition.
26. What can we infer about the author?
A. She is a spokesperson. B. She is a tennis player.
C. She wants to be a teacher. D. She enjoys commenting on books.
27. What can be the best title for the text?
A. My best oral book report. B. A typical kid in primary school.
C. My favorite childhood teacher. D. An unforgettable national event.

Years ago, when I was working as a sales manager, there were people on my team who were always the top-performing employees. We all knew how to get the job done, but there were a few who had interpersonal (人际的) skill s and persuasive abilities to land the sales.
To get hired, you obviously need to have the necessary skills to complete the required tasks. For example, you’re not going to be interviewed for a position in IT if you don’t know how to work a computer. These kinds of skills are called hard skills. However, many employers are looking for applicants who possess certain soft skills that relate to one’s personality, such as leadership qualities, time management abilities, and communication skills.
The biggest difference between hard and soft skills is how each type of skill is got. While hard skills are abilities learned through education or training, soft skills are more subjective personality qualities that you’re either born with or you develop through life experiences. Hard skills are the technical knowledge you gain through training that get you in the door, and soft skills are the personality qualities that make you a good employee and keep you there.
It’s easy to quantify hard skills because they’re specific and often define the basic requirements of a job. Soft skills are more difficult to measure. But they’re transferable (可转移的) across all industries.
So in addition to hiring people who know what they’re doing, employers look for applicants with a specific set of soft skills that can’t be taught as easily as hard skills. These innate (先天的) personality qualities can be developed, but it takes time, and employers would rather hi re someone who’s already there.
28. Why did the author mention her experience of being a sales manager?
A To praise her colleagues’wonderful skills.
B. To introduce the topic of two kinds of skills.
C. To stress the importance of interpersonal skills
D. To prove that she has much experience in managing.
29. Which of the following belongs to soft skills?
A. The ability to get knowledge.
B. The ability to interview a leader.
C. The ability to play a computer game.
D. The ability to communicate with others.
30. What is the biggest difference between soft and hard skills?
A. How they are got in our life. B. When they are needed in our work.
C. Which is easier to develop in us. D. Which is more important in daily life.
31. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. Soft skills are as important as hard skills
B. Hard skills can be changed into soft skills
C. Applicants need more soft skills than hard skills
D. Employers put more stress on hard skills than soft skills
C Applicants need more soft skills than hard skills
D. Employers put more stress on hard skills than soft skills

A new outdoor fabric (织物) stores energy by day and then lights up at night. Being tested in a city park, this totally “cool” fabric has attracted interest for its many urban uses.
This is the invention of Anai Green, an industrial and product designer based in Tel Aviv, Israel. She designed a fabric that includes organic and solar photovoltaic cells (光伏电池). The cells capture sunlight and store the energy in strips with LEDs. This allows the fabric to shade public space by day. When night falls, these strips light up. Green said, “We use LumiWeave to light public space without carbon emissions, making the lighting all-natural. And we spread light in the area we want to light only.”
The system was designed to adapt to all weather conditions and can continue to provide lighting even after three days without sunlight. In addition, you simply put LumiWeave up and the sun will do the work. This in itself saves 50 percent of the cost of building standard lighting, and it saves 100 percent on the electricity bills. This is great news for cities. Tel Aviv, Green’s hometown, is trying out LumiWeave in AtidimPark.
The mayor of Tel Aviv, Ron Huldai, is making efforts to address climate change. “LumiWeave will turn out to be a groundbreaking project,” Huldai said. The mayor added that LumiWeave is especially important as it solves the issue of shading urban areas and uses clean energy.
The new fabric can be fixed atop bike paths, in children’s parks and in walking areas. Many big cities in Israel are planning on adopting LumiWeave. As there is also use for the fabric in outdoor sitting areas of restaurants and hotels, Green has developed a LumiWeave parasol (大遮阳伞). “We are now developing the possibility of controlling it from the phone — we’re creating an application,” Green said. LumiWeave provides an ideal solution for urban parks and gardens. We hope that it will soon be lighting up night skies around the world.
32. How does the new outdoor fabric work?
A By turning household waste into clean energy.
B. By using photovoltaic cells to promote plant growth.
C. By providing shade and energy in an eco-friendly way.
D. By changing its temperatures according to the weather.
33. Which of the following can be the feature of LumiWeave?
A. It’s functional and cost-effective.
B. It takes up a lot of public space.
C. It’s equipped with self-repair materials.
D. It can broadcast weather conditions more quickly.
34. What’s Ron Huldai’s attitude towards LumiWeave?
A. Worried. B. Doubtful. C. Unclear. D. Supportive.
35. What can we infer about LumiWeave from Paragraph 5?
A. It may cause safety concerns.
B. It will be further developed for wider use.
C. It will be replaced by more intelligent devices.
D. It can reduce the waiting time in some places.

Peter woke up early in the morning. He went downstairs in a hurry and started to have his breakfast as quickly as possible.
“Why are you in such a hurry, early bird?” Mum asked him. “We will have an English spelling test today, Mum,” Peter said. “Mr. White promised to offer prizes to those who get 100 scores. I’ve been studying the word list since last week. Although the words are difficult, I am well prepared for them.”
Peter reviewed the spelling of each word once more carefully when Dad drove him to school. At last, it was time for the students to have a test. “Responsibility,” Mr. White started. Peter wrote it on his test paper quickly and confidently.
“The second word: contribution,” Mr. White said.
“So easy,” Peter thought. He quickly wrote the word down.
Thirty words later, the test papers were collected by Mr. White. “I am to mark your papers now,” he told the class. After marking the test papers, Mr. White said, “three of you won a prize today for excellent test scores. Peter, David and Mary got 100 percent on the spelling test!”
Mr. White praised them. Meanwhile, he gave the three students each a dictionary. Peter’s was an English-Chinese dictionary — the one he liked best. Peter was so excited that he held it high when his classmates cheered. “This is my happiest moment,” Peter thought.
After Mr. White gave the test paper back, Peter had a look at the words, feeling proud of his spelling. All of a sudden, the word “contribution” confused him. It didn’t seem right. Peter began to compare them after taking out the word list. “C-o-n-t-r-i-b-u-s-i-o-n,” he whispered. He had spelled it wrong.
“What am I to do?” Peter said to himself. “I expect my classmates to think I’m a master in spelling. If I tell Mr. White one of my spelling words is wrong I’ll have to give my prize back, or I will become an example for telling a lie”.
Staring at the red sign “100%” which was written at his test paper, Peter was lost in thought. After a while, he remembered a lesson Mum used to teach him, “We ought to be an honest person.”
Paragraph 1:
Slowly, Peter raised his hand.

Peter looked around and found many of his classmates were smiling at him.

【原文】My name is Ellen and I live in a flat in London. I don’t live with my parents. They are living in the countryside. An advantage of city life is having everything you need so close at hand. Living beside the underground station means I don’t need a car to get around, which saves me money. I can take the underground to work or go to visit my friends. Also, there are shopping centers and cinemas everywhere. Of course, London, like any large city, has its problems too. Londoners don’t chat on the train or the bus, and there is much less sharing spirit than in the country where my parents live. In fact, they don’t understand how I can put up with the noise and pollution. However, I see that as a small price to pay, I’m here in the heart of the city. As a famous poet once said, he who is tired of London is tired of life.

With its 15 miles of shore under the forces of Lake Michigan’s wind and waves Indiana’s only national park has high sands from which visitors can see the skyline of Chicago across the lake.
A. Hear “singing sands” each day.

【答案】24. D 25. C 26. B 27. C

A. To praise her colleagues’wonderful skills.
【答案】28. B 29. D 30. A 31. A
根据第一段“Years ago, when I was working as a sales manager, there were people on my team who were always the top-performing employees. We all knew how to get the job done, but there were a few who had interpersonal (人际的) skill s and persuasive abilities to land the sales.(几年前,当我担任销售经理时,我的团队中有一些人一直是表现最好的员工。我们都知道如何完成工作,但也有少数人有人际交往技巧和说服能力来完成销售)”可推知,作者在本段提出自己做销售的经历,是为了引出两种技能的话题。故选B项。
29题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段“However, many employers are looking for applicants who possess certain soft skills that relate to one’s personality, such as leadership qualities, time management abilities, and communication skills.(然而,许多雇主希望应聘者具备与个性相关的软技能,比如领导能力、时间管理能力和沟通技巧)”可知,沟通技巧属于软技能,所以D项“The ability to communicate with others.(与他人沟通的能力)”属于软技能。故选D项。
【30题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“The biggest difference between hard and soft skills is how each type of skill is got.(硬技能和软技能之间最大的区别在于每种技能的获得方式)”可知,硬技能和软技能之间最大的区别在于每种技能的获得方式,就是他们是如何进入我们的生活的。故选A项。
【31题详解】
主旨大意题。根据最后一段“So in addition to hiring people who know what they’re doing, employers look for applicants with a specific set of soft skills that can’t be taught as easily as hard skills.(因此,除了雇佣那些知道自己在做什么的人之外,雇主们还希望求职者拥有一套特定的软技能,这些软技能不像硬技能那样容易教)”以及纵观全文可知,作者先介绍了硬技能和软技能的定义和区别,然后阐述了软技能在求职中的重要性,并指出雇主在招聘时除了关注求职者的专业技能外,还会考虑其软技能。由此可知,A项“Soft skills are as important as hard skills.(软技能和硬技能一样重要)”适合作本文最佳标题。故选A项。
C Applicants need more soft skills than hard skills
D. Employers put more stress on hard skills than soft skills
D
A. By turning household waste into clean energy.
A It may cause safety concerns.
B. It will be further developed for wider use.
C. It will be replaced by more intelligent devices.
D. It can reduce the waiting time in some places.
【答案】32. C 33. A 34. D 35. B

【答案】Dear Leo,
How are you doing? I know you’ve been sick frequently lately, which makes me a bit concerned. As your friend, I’m writing to encourage you to start exercising regularly.
Here are a few practical suggestions. First, lack of exercise weakens your immune system, making you more likely to get sick. Starting with simple activities like jogging or cycling a few times a week can greatly improve your physical condition. Second, consider joining a school sports club—badminton or tennis might not only keep you active but also strengthen your friendship. In addition, you could try home workouts using fitness apps, which offer guided exercises perfect for beginners.
Remember, consistency is key. Even small efforts daily will make a big difference over time. Looking forward to seeing a stronger and more energetic you.
Yours,
Li Hua

67. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给两段段落开头语,续写第一段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
注意:只需续写第一段,词数为100左右;注意一二两段的衔接。
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 2:
Peter looked around and found many of his classmates were smiling at him.
【答案】
Slowly, Peter raised his hand. “Mr. White, I didn’t get full marks on the test. I made a mistake.” He stood up and handed his teacher the dictionary he liked best and his test paper. He said, “I spelled contribution with ’s-i’ instead of ‘t-i’.” Peter could feel his classmates looking at him with surprise as he walked back to his desk. To his surprise, Mr. White held up Peter’s testpaper. “Class,” he said, “Peter did something even more important than spelling every word correctly in a test.” Mr. White smiled at Peter, adding that Peter taught us all a lesson on being honest.
【解析】
