The 32-year-old woman was born into a family of farmers in a mountainous area of Africa. The family was so poor that they didn’t even have running water. As a kid, Molly never thought that the mountains around her village were within reach. In her culture, women are expected to follow the local tradition. Goats have been kept by people for thousands of years. People raise goats for their meat, milk, and wool. They also make cheese from goat milk and clothes from goat wool. But the benefits of goats are far beyond that.
Goats are animals of the mountains. Weighing about 50 kilograms, they are strong, natural-born climbers. They can climb on cliffs (峭壁) and rocks without losing their footing. In areas where rocky hills are hard to access for human teams, villagers use goats to help prevent wildfires. They see goats as a wonderful partner, because goats eat plants and keep them from overgrowing. Goats have a varied diet and an appetite for all the plants that make up the fire fuel ladder. This not only helps lower the chance of wildfires year-round, but also clears a path for firefighters in the event of a wildfire. Such fire control is safer for both villagers and fire control experts.
In addition to fire prevention, goats can be used to help create healthy soil. While eating, these “high-tech recycle machines” turn the plants into something that feeds the soil. When they step heavily on the soil, they improve its ability to hold water and firm up the hillside. In the process, they also help break down nutrients (营养物质) in the soil, besides, when goats lie down to sleep, their body heat warms the soil and helps seeds grow. “Look at my farm. I don’t think anything can compare to what my goats can do.” says Sean Smith, a farmer who keeps about 500 goats on his farm.
36. Why are goats used for fire prevention in areas with rocky hills?
A. They live near the villages. B. They are easy to raise.
C. Their climbing skills are good. D. Their wool doesn’t catch fire.
37. How do goats help villagers prevent wildfires?
A. By carrying water. B. By clearing the plants.
C. By making the soil loose. D. By warning the villagers.
38. What do the underlined words “make up the fire fuel ladder” in Paragraph 2 mean?
A. To be used as clean car fuel. B. To put out a fire completely.
C. To form strong fire escape ladders. D. To help flames spread along the hillside.
39. How does Sean Smith feel when talking about his goats?
A. Proud. B. Sorry. C. Surprised. D. Confused.
40. What does the last paragraph mainly talk about?
A. When the goats warm the soil. B. How the soil helps the goats grow.
C. Why the soil makes the goats healthy. D. What benefits the goats bring to the soil.

故填for。
“decide to do sth.” 故填to take。
故填how。
故填who。
故填a。
56. ________________________ (我们什么时候开会) is still under discussion.
When we will have the meeting
When we will have the meeting。
57. It is wise of you ________________ (保护个人信息).
【答案】to protect personal information
+ of sb. + to do sth.” 故答案为to protect personal information。
58. This is the only house ____________________________ (需要维修的).
【答案】that needs repairing / that needs to be repaired
故填:that needs repairing / that needs to be repaired。
59. The box is __________________________ (太重了提不动).
【答案】too heavy to carry
故填too heavy to carry。
60. So far, ______________________ (我们还没完成任务).
【答案】we haven’t finished the task yet
我们:we,作主语;没完成:haven’t finished,作谓语;任务:the task,作宾语;还:yet,作状语。故填we haven’t finished the task yet。

Standing on the top of an 8,000-meter mountain is many climbers’ dream. For Molly, a woman who has achieved this goal three times, it means much more.
The 32-year-old woman was born into a family of farmers in a mountainous area of Africa. The family was so poor that they didn’t even have running water. As a kid, Molly never thought that the mountains around her village were within reach. In her culture, women are expected to follow the local tradition. But Molly decided early that this path wasn’t for her. She broke from tradition by moving to the capital city at the age of 16 to stay with her relatives. There, she graduated from middle school, took out a student loan, and went to college. She studied communications and later started her career as a reporter.
Breaking from tradition was no easy task, but Molly took a step further. While reporting on a mountain-climbing event in Asia, she became seriously interested in this sport. Although she had good physical condition, she lacked experience in professional mountain climbing. After training with professionals for several years, she became a full-time climber. In the seven years since, she has reached the top of three 8,000-meter mountains.
With her success, Molly feels the need to improve the living conditions of her village. Molly says her next step is to start a project so that the villagers can have electricity and running water, and the children will have better education. Molly hopes more children can follow in her footsteps. She believes that the most important thing is to try. She wants to show people that they can achieve their dreams if they believe in themselves and work hard enough.

A By carrying water. B. By clearing the plants.
C By making the soil loose.
