WALKING BACK
Everest Blog
Day 1-Am I Mad?
I first heard of “Show Racism the Red Card” when a friend asked me to sign a petition (请愿书) supporting their work. Basically, it’s an organization which uses professional footballers to help fight racism in sport and society. I liked the idea, so I signed.
A few weeks later, he asked me if I wanted to do a bit more for them. I thought he probably meant making a donation or doing some voluntary work. But then he told me that a group of about 20 people were getting sponsored to play the highest ever game of rugby at 5,140 metres on the slopes of Mount Everest. Well, to cut a long story short, tomorrow I’m off to Nepal. Wish me luck.
Day 4-Uphill all the Way
We’re making our way up to the base camp-that’s where most climbers start their final climbing to the top-and then, we’ll play our game. There’s one thing I’ve learned pretty quickly. If you walk too fast at high altitude (高度), you’ll get really short of breath. There’s not much oxygen, and you have to do everything slowly. Today we started out at 8a.m. We had to cross three suspension bridges. One of them was so high that you couldn’t see the bottom. Then we walked through some beautiful forest areas before we started a two-hour uphill hike to Mamche Bazaar. It was really tough and most of us had headaches when we arrived. Tomorrow we’re going to have a rest day. I need one!
Day 11-The Game
Today we played our game. It was supposed to be a “friendly” game, and last night, we had agreed we’d just walk and not run. However, it got competitive and two players were even sent off. We only played for 14 minutes. I think someone would have got hurt if we’d played any longer! My team won and I scored the last try! Of course, none of this matters. What’s really important is that we did it and we’ve raised a load of money. It feels amazing.
11. According to the blog, the writer is most likely to be ________.
A. a journalist B. a football player
C. an experienced volunteer D. a professional mountain climber
12. By “Am I Mad?”, the writer means ________.
A. he will climb to the top of Mount Everest without any sponsor
B. he is really angry with the racism he sees and feels
C. his friends don’t understand why he goes to Nepal
D. his decision is too much beyond expectation
13. What did the writer do on his journey? ________
A. He lost the “friendly” game because he didn’t want to hurt anyone.
B. He donated a load of money to help those in need after the game.
C. He played a game 7 days after they arrived at Mamche Bazaar.
D. He helped those who felt uncomfortable while on the way uphill.
B
The turning point of my life was my decision to give up a promising business career and study music. My parents, although sympathetic, and sharing my love of music, disapproved of it as a profession. This was understandable in view of the family background. My grandfather had taught music for nearly forty years. Though much beloved and respected in the community, he earned barely enough to provide for his large family. As a consequence of this example in the family, the very mention of music as a profession carried with it a picture of a risky existence with uncertain financial rewards. My parents insisted on college instead of a music school, and to college I went quite happily, as I remember, for although I loved my violin and spent most of my spare time practicing, I had many other interests.
Before my graduation from college, the family met with severe financial reverses and I felt it my duty to leave college and take a job. Thus was I launched upon a business career which I always think of as the wasted years. Now I do not for a moment mean to disparage (贬低) business. My whole point is that it was not for me. I went into it for money, and aside from the satisfaction of being able to help the family, money is all I got out of it. It was not enough. I felt that life was passing me by.
I continued to make money and finally, bit by bit, accumulated enough to enable me to go abroad to study music. I resigned from my position and, feeling like a man released from jail, sailed for Europe. I stayed four years, worked harder than I had ever dreamed of working before and enjoyed every minute of it. “Enjoyed” is too mild a word. I walked on air. I really lived. I was a free man and I was doing what I loved to do and what I was meant to do.
If I had stayed in business, I might be a comparatively wealthy man today, but I do not believe I would have made a success of living. I would have given up all those inner satisfactions that money can never buy.
14. The writer’s parents didn’t want him to take a music career mainly because ________.
A. the writer didn’t show much talent in playing music
B. college was a much better option than a music school
C. it seemed an unstable and financially-challenged profession

B. The writer dropped out before graduation.
C. The writer kept playing the violin every day.
D. The writer went to college unwillingly.
16. What does the underlined sentence I walked on air. in Paragraph 3 mean?
A. I was interviewed by a broadcaster. B. My music was alive on broadcast.
C. I felt very relaxed indeed. D. I was extremely excited.
17. What message does the passage mainly convey?
A. Being able to do what one loves is the best kind of life.
B. A success of living depends on one’s adaption to life.
C. One should think twice before he/she makes a decision.
D. Ups and downs make one even stronger.
C
The next big stage, the improvement from automatic to truly autonomous trains, is already here. It will take train autonomy to the next level, beyond the automated performance on closed loops (圈;环) such as automatic rail lines today and onto the vast expanse of international railways.
That will mean that the next generation of trains will be able to locate themselves in their environment and interact with other train traffic without human assistance. They will have the ability to detect and manage on their own all elements of their environment, designed by a connected traffic management system.
The transition toward train autonomy is speeding, says Kai Taylor, Thales Marketing & Communications Director Main Line Rail Signalling, and a reason for that can be summed up in one word: digitalisation.
“The key to success”, says Kai Taylor, “is in fact what is in ‘the Thales DNA’—the digital technologies across Thales business units-aerospace, space, transportation, defence and security”.
“These technologies represent the pieces of the puzzle to achieve real train autonomy. They are artificial intelligence, big data, connectivity, including the internet of things linking trains to intelligent railway switches, and with net security built in. We have sensors for obstacle (障碍) detection from Thales defence, safe and precise satellite positioning from our space and avionics (航空电子设备) division, cybersecurity from the Thales security sector and the trusted explainable and approvable artificial intelligence led by Thales for safe decisions. Taken together, they will provide the train with true autonomy for safe and efficient operations”
Of course, all these technologies are at the base of the Thales ground and air transportation sector’s current offerings for efficient, safe and reliable travel in the air or on the ground.
Kai Taylor explains, “We’re unique in having the experience and the expertise in all aspects of mobility, including Thales global leadership in air and train management systems which are assuring rail and air travel for airlines and rail operators all over the world.”
18. What will truly autonomous trains do?
A. Carry out the automated performance on closed loops.
B. Communicate with other trains with the help of humans.
C. Examine and deal with the situations of the surroundings.
D. Travel automatically with great speeds using solar powers.
19. What does the underlined word “that”in paragraph 3 refer to?
A. Their environment. B. The transition’ speeding.
C. Human assistance. D. The ability to locate themselves.
20. What does paragraph 5 mainly tell us?
A. How digitalisation works in real train autonomy.
B. What sensors on the autonomous trains deal with.
C. What will guarantee the train’s smooth operations.
D. How obstacles are removed from the paths of trains.
21. What’s Kai Taylor’s attitude towards the future of autonomous trains?
A. Indifferent. B. Concerned. C. Critical. D. Confident.
D
I used to believe that only words could catch the essence (本质) of the human soul. The literary works contained such distinct stories that they shaped the way we saw the world. Words were what composed the questions we sought to uncover and the answers to those questions themselves. Words were everything.
That belief changed.
In an ordinary math class, my teacher posed a simple question: What’s 0. 99 rounded to the nearest whole number? Easy. When rounded to the nearest whole number, 0. 99=1. Somehow, I thought even though 0. 99 is only 0. 01 away from 1, there’s still a 0. 01 difference. That means even if two things are only a little different, they are still different, so doesn’t that make them completely different?
My teacher answered my question by presenting another equation (等式) : 1= 0. 9, which could also be expressed as 1=0. 99999… repeating itself without ever ending.
There was something mysterious but attractive about the equation. The left side was unchangeable, objective: it contained a number that ended. On the right was something endless, number repeating itself limitless times. Yet, somehow, these two opposed things were connected by an equal sign.
Lying in bed, I thought about how much the equation paralleled our existence. The left side of the equation represents that sometimes life itself is so unchangeable and so clear. The concrete, whole number of the day when you were born and the day when you would die. But then there is that gap in between life and death. The right side means a time and space full of limitless possibilities, and endless opportunities into the open future.
So that’s what life is. Objective but imaginative. Unchangeable but limitless. Life is an equation with two sides that balances itself out. Still, we can’t ever truly seem to put the perfect words to it. So possibly numbers can express ideas as equally well as words can. For now, let’s leave it at that: 1= 0. 99999… and live a life like it.
22. What does the author emphasize about words in paragraph 1?
A. Their wide variety. B. Their literary origins.
C. Their different sounds. D. Their expressive power.
23. What made the author find the equation attractive?
A. The repetition of a number. B. The difference between the two numbers.
C. The question the teacher raised. D. The way two different numbers are equal.
24. Which of the following can replace the underlined word “paralleled” in paragraph 6?
A. Measured. B. Mirrored. C. Composed. D. Influenced.
25. What is a suitable title for the text?
A. The Perfect Equation. B. Numbers Build Equations.
C. An Attractive Question. D. Words Outperform Numbers.

【76题答案】
【答案】Dear Adam,
I’m thrilled to hear about your upcoming trip to China! For a city rich in history and culture, I highly recommend Xi’an.
As the starting point of the Silk Road, it boasts iconic sites like the Terracotta Warriors and the Ancient City Wall. Not only can you explore architectures of Ming and Qing dynasties but also you can have a taste of local snacks in its vibrant Muslim Quarter. Additionally, the Shaanxi History Museum offers deep insights into China’s past. I’m sure you’ll be amazed by its unique blend of ancient and modern charm.
Wish you an unforgettable journey here!
Yours,
Li Hua
