If you could add one compulsory(必修的) subject at your school, what would it be?
Why?
Justin
19:03 Dec.15, 2022
I would suggest adding sign language(手
语 ). Not many people know how to
communicate with those who have
hearing problems. It would be very
helpful if we could start to learn sign
language when we are young. This would
teach us to treat those who are less
fortunate(幸运的) with respect.

Self-defense(自卫). This would be useful
when you are in a situation where you
need to protect yourself.
You may argue that physical education is
enough. But P.E. only teaches you how
to stay fit and healthy through exercise.
P.E. teachers don’t teach any kind of
self-defense, so we surely need to have
such lessons.

A subject that gives students a better
understanding of themselves. According
to some surveys, many middle school
students don’t have a dream. A person
without a dream is like a ship sailing
without a compass(指南针).
Teaching students to understand
themselves better can help them discover
their strengths and weaknesses. Then,
they will have more confidence and a
clearer direction in life. LIKE(47) REPLY

I would suggest adding a
time-management class. Nowadays,
many students are addicted to their
smartphones and other electronic devices.
Some of them sleep late because they
can’t balance their studies with gaming.
A time-management class will help
students learn that “first things come
first”. This will help make sure that they
lead a healthy life.

Can Animals Predict Earthquakes?
Dear Scientist Sam,
I noticed my dog acting very nervously only a few minutes before a recent
earthquake shook the house. Is it 75 that my dog knew the earthquake was
going to happen?
Janet
Sam’s reply:
Well, Janet, people have believed for many centuries that animals can predict
earthquakes. In fact, we can look 76 to what we know from the ancient
Greeks. They noticed that animals acted strangely in the hours before earthquakes.
Even now, people talk about dogs that won’t stop barking and cats that won’t come
out of hiding before an earthquake. Furthermore, strange behavior like this before
earthquakes isn’t limited to pets. People have also reported seeing chickens laying no
eggs, bees leaving their homes, and big groups of fish 77 and floating here
and there in the hours before a natural disaster hits.
It’s hard to answer your question, since not all seismologists(地震学家) or
animal experts agree that animals can predict earthquakes. Those that disagree say
that we should think of other things that 78 animal behavior, such as hunger.
On the other hand, many people who believe that animals can predict earthquakes
often have 79 of very strange animal behavior right before the ground shakes.
To them, this is evidence that animals can certainly predict earthquakes.
In short, the truth is that we aren’t sure. Animals might be able to sense
earthquakes before they happen, but there is no solid evidence that they can.
However, one thing that most seismologists can agree on is that more research is
needed. Animals may be the 80 to predicting earthquakes before they
happen, and could help save many lives.

D. Answer the questions(根据短文内容回答下列问题): ( 12分)
It was about 2:00 am. I was driving my taxi on the way to pick up a passenger.
When I arrived to collect, I found the building was dark. I just saw a single light in a
ground floor window, I walked to the door and knocked, “Just a minute,” answered a
weak, elderly voice.
After a long silence, the door opened and a small woman in her eighties stood
before me. She has a small suitcase beside her. I took the suitcase to the car, and then
returned to help her. She took my arm and walked slowly toward the car. She kept
thanking me for my kindness.
“It’s nothing,” I told her. “I just try to treat my passengers the way I would want
my mother treated.”
“Oh, you’re such a good young man.” She said. When we got into the taxi, she
gave me an address, and then asked, “Could you drive through city center?”
“It’s not the shortest way.” I answered immediately.
“Oh, I’m familiar with the city. And I’m in no hurry.” she said. “I’m on my way
to a hospice(临终医院). I don’t have any family left. The doctor says I don’t have
very long. It would be the last time for me to travel around the city...”
I quietly reached over and shut off the meter(计价器). For the next two hours, we
drove through the city. She showed me the building where she had once worked as a
lift operator and the neighborhood where she had lived in. And she also told me to
park in front of a furniture shop that once had been a ball room. She had gone dancing
there as a girl.
Sometimes she’d ask me to slow down in front of a particular building. She just
sat and stared into the darkness, saying nothing. At dawn(黎明), she suddenly said,
“I’m tired. Let’s go now.”
We drove in silence to the address she had given me. “How much shall I pay
you?” she asked, “Nothing.” I replied.
“You have to make a living,”she answered. “Oh, there are other passengers,” I
said.
Almost without thinking, I gave her a hug. She held onto me tightly with tears.
Our hug ended with her words, “ 93 ”
