17. Where did the speaker volunteer during her gap year?
A. At a national park. B. At a diving center. C. At a school.

19. What was the speaker’s unexpected challenge?
A. The language. B. The food. C. The weather.
20. What is the speaker’s opinion on taking a gap year?
A. Beneficial. B. Difficult. C. Necessary.
B 18. B 19. C 20. A
W: I’m glad to be here to talk about my gap year, which took place over two decades ago. I decided to go to the island of Bali. I really wanted to volunteer at a national park, but I was too late to apply so I went for a job at a diving center. This turned out to be better than what I considered, like helping in a school.
When it comes to packing, obviously you need your travel documents, your phone and charger. Then think about any medicine you might need. How did I stay in touch with family? When I first arrived, I wrote a letter every week. They took at least four weeks to arrive though. Then, when I met someone else who had a blog, I realized that that’s the thing to do. A phone call is nice, but the time difference can make that difficult.
There are lots of things you’ll need to adapt to when you’re in another country. The language of course. But luckily, so many people speak English. And I knew I’d struggle with the hot food. I hadn’t realized the effect the climate would have on us, though. Generally speaking, I really enjoyed my time away. It’s a good way to make friends, and you gain confidence too.

“When I was 8, a doctor predicted that I wouldn’t live past 20. But now I’m here, at 29, happy with my life,” says Ma Jun, the youngest prize-winner of this year’s Junma Award for Ethnic Literature, one of China’s four major national literary prizes held every four years.
Ma, who uses a wheelchair, was born in 1995 in the Ningxia Hui autonomous region. His first winning prose collection (散文集) Qing Bai Shijie (The Green and White Stone Steps), is divided into five parts, describing his life experiences: growing up, daily life, love and desire, emotions and reflections. In Chinese, qing bai suggests purity and innocence. In the opening chapter, he reminded his childhood when he couldn’t move or stand without help. While his peers ran and played, Ma could only sit on the stone steps, watching in frustration and sadness. Some people cruelly suggested his lack of mobility was “divine punishment (天谴)” for supposed wrongdoings. Through his writing, Ma hopes to counter such prejudice (偏见), showing that he is no different from anyone else.
Shi Tiesheng’s best-seller Wo Yu Ditan (I and the Temple of Earth) changed Ma’s life. Shi a renowned writer who also uses a wheelchair, had transformed his struggles into literature. Ma was struck by the realization that someone with similar struggles could find meaning and joy in life. He started a three-year journey of writing the book by recording his own life, pouring his heart and soul into the words.
“Be a faithful writer.” It is now his life motto. Writing is not just a profession for Ma — it’s a lifeline, a way to connect with the world and leave behind a footprint of courage, sincerity and hope.
24. Why did Ma Jun use Qing Bai Shijie as the title of the prose collection?
A. To entertain readers with his life stories.
B. To counter prejudice against people with disabilities.
C. To win literary awards easily.
D. To present his wisdom and bravery.
25. Which of the following about Shi Tiesheng is TRUE?
A. He is the oldest prize-winner of the Junma Award for Ethnic Literature.

根据第二段中“In the opening chapter, he reminded his childhood when he couldn’t move or stand without help. While his peers ran and played, Ma could only sit on the stone steps, watching in frustration and sadness. Some people cruelly suggested his lack of mobility was ‘divine punishment (天谴)’ for supposed wrongdoings. Through his writing, Ma hopes to counter such prejudice (偏见), showing that he is no different from anyone else.
根据第三段中“Shi, a renowned writer who also uses a wheelchair, had transformed his struggles into literature. (史铁生,一位同样使用轮椅的著名作家,将他的奋斗经历转化为了文学作品)”可知,史铁生也使用轮椅,并将他的奋斗转化成了文学,故B项是正确表述。故选B项。

Ten million Americans are considering freelancing (从事自由职业), according to Upwork’s Great Resignation survey. Among those planning to quit their jobs, 52% are giving freelancing serious consideration. What’s more, many are choosing freelancing over full-time work; it’s no longer just a fallback or a side job.
One of the key benefits of freelancing is that you get to choose your own workload. Unrealistic expectations at work and the lack of boundaries have seen many a full-time worker burn out. However, freelancers have much more control over their workloads. This is not to say that freelancers don’t burn out. They manage their workload better and prioritize other aspects of their life. They don’t usually get to choose their boss or their teammates at a traditional job. They get to choose who they work with. Unlike full-time workers, freelancers have greater freedom to do the work they enjoy — and say no to the work they don’t. This results in greater job satisfaction.
Of course, there are disadvantages of pursuing freelancing. Employees in many countries receive benefits that are part of their employment contracts. When you’re a freelancer, you work for yourself so you let go of these benefits. Your workload may be inconsistent. Sometimes when it rains, it pours and you may have multiple projects on your plate. At other times, you may not have much work. This fluctuation in cash flow can feel like a huge negative for new freelancers. As a business owner, your business’s success or failure is entirely dependent on you, which can feel overwhelming. You will also have to learn to become your own best advocate, promoting your products to find new projects and clients and expand your business.
Of course, to freelance or not to freelance depends on yourself. Anyway, businesses are increasingly adding skills. Independent professionals are powering the rebuild. Therefore, more businesses are open to remote work, hiring talent regardless of their distance from a corporate office. This changing attitude has increased the number of opportunities for freelancers to find high-paying and meaningful work.
28. What contributes to a freelancer’s greater job satisfaction?
A. Being free from taking responsibility.
B. Enjoying welfare provided by government.
C. Developing harmonious interpersonal relationships.
D. Making self-selection of job types.
29. What does the underlined word “fluctuation” in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Development. B. Break.
C. Unsteadiness. D. Exchange.
30. What will a freelancer have to do to develop his business?
A. Depend on clients. B. Market himself.
C. Consult professionals. D. Improve employment contracts.
31. What does the author think of the future of freelancing?
A. Promising. B. Challenging.
C. Unpredictable. D. Risky.
D 29. C 30. B 31. A
根据第二段中“Unlike full-time workers, freelancers have greater freedom to do the work they enjoy — and say no to the work they don’t. This results in greater job satisfaction. (与全职工作者不同,自由职业者有更大的自由去做他们喜欢的工作,并对他们不喜欢的工作说不,这会提高工作满意度)”可知,自行选择工作类型使自由职业者有更大的工作满意度。故选D项。
【29题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第三段“Your workload may be inconsistent. Sometimes when it rains, it pours and you may have multiple projects on your plate. At other times, you may not have much work.(您的工作量可能不一致。有时祸不单行,你可能有多个项目要做。在其他时候,你可能没有太多的工作)”可知,自由职业工作量不稳定,可得出钱也不稳定,画线词所在句子意为“这种现金流的波动对新的自由职业者来说可能是一个巨大的负面影响。”因此,fluctuation在此意为“不稳定性”,和C项意思相近。故选C项。
【30题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段“You will also have to learn to become your own best advocate, promoting your products to find new projects and clients and expand your business.(你还必须学会成为自己最好的代言人,推广你的产品来寻找新的项目和客户,拓展你的业务)”可知,为了发展业务,自由职业者不得不营销自己。
根据最后一段“Anyway, businesses are increasingly adding skills. Independent professionals are powering the rebuild. Therefore, more businesses are open to remote work, hiring talent regardless of their distance from a corporate office. This changing attitude has increased the number of opportunities for freelancers to find high-paying and meaningful work.(无论如何,企业越来越多地增加技能,独立的专业人士正在为重建提供动力,因此,越来越多的企业对远程工作持开放态度,雇佣人才,无论他们与公司办公室的距离如何。这种态度的改变增加了自由职业者找到高薪和有意义工作的机会)”可知,作者认为自由职业者的未来前景很好。故选A项。
D
In the pursuit of sustainable living, the Earthship concept has become a symbol of innovation. Earthships, pioneered by architect Michael Reynolds, are habitats that use the power of nature and recycled materials to create self-sufficient living spaces. These structures reduce environmental impact and provide a unique approach to fighting climate change through architecture.
The main features of Earthship are its renewable energy, water harvesting, and food production. It uses old dirt-filled tires to create walls that store heat and keep the inside temperature stable. Earthships use solar panels, wind turbines, and batteries to generate and store electricity. It collects rainwater and snowmelt, filters (过滤) it for drinking, and reuses it for gardening and flushing toilets. By integrating these elements, Earthships aim to create a closed-loop system where resources are continuously recycled and reused, minimizing waste and dependence on additional resources.
Annual extreme weather events have become common due to climate change. People have had to find ways to adapt and live sustainably with the ongoing threat of rising sea levels, raging forest fires, heavy rains, and unusual ice storms. The flexibility of Earthship design allows for adaptation to different landscapes and climates, making them a practical option in many settings.
Moreover, Earthship construction allows people to take control of their living space and reduce their dependence on traditional housing systems. However, the costs to build Earthships can be wide-ranging, and home values are nearly as expensive as traditional homes. Because the Earthship design is still in its experimental phase, many projects fail or are abandoned midway through, with intended homeowners losing thousands of dollars.
Despite the challenges, Earthships offer a unique and artistic design aesthetic, with curved walls and colorful glass bottle accents. They are a solution to self-sufficient living and a statement of individuality and creativity. As the world moves towards a more sustainable future, Earthships shine as a symbol of hope, offering an innovative approach to living in harmony with nature.
32. What do we know about the Earthship?
A. It is time-consuming to build.
B. It makes efficient use of resources.
C. It perfectly caters to the fast-paced lifestyle.
D. It costs less than traditional houses to maintain.
33. Why does the author mention extreme weather in paragraph 3?
A. To stress the advantages of constructing Earthships.
B. To show the limitations of living in an Earthship.
C. To explain the difficulty of designing Earthships.
D. To present the effects of climate on housing systems.
34. What is a problem with building Earthships?
A. It lacks sufficient technical support.
B. It is demanding for builders.
C. It has a high risk of failure.
D. It causes trouble for local residents.
35. Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A. The New Trend of Eco-Friendly Architecture
B. Earthships: A Solution to Changeable Nature
C. The Artistic Innovation of Earthship Design
D. Earthships: A Pioneer in Sustainable Living
B 33. A 34. C 35. D
根据第二段中的内容“By integrating these elements, Earthships aim to create a closed-loop system where resources are continuously recycled and reused, minimizing waste and dependence on additional resources.(通过整合这些元素,地球之船旨在创建一个闭环系统,资源在其中不断循环利用,最大限度地减少浪费和对额外资源的依赖)”可知,地球之船高效利用资源。
根据第三段中的内容“Annual extreme weather events have become common due to climate change. People have had to find ways to adapt and live sustainably with the ongoing threat of rising sea levels, raging forest fires, heavy rains, and unusual ice storms. The flexibility of Earthship design allows for adaptation to different landscapes and climates, making them a practical option in many settings.(由于气候变化,每年发生的极端天气事件已经变得很常见。人们不得不寻找各种方法来适应这种变化,并在海平面上升、森林大火肆虐、暴雨倾盆以及异常的冰暴等持续威胁下实现可持续的生活。地球之船的设计具有灵活性,能够适应不同的地形地貌和气候条件,这使得它们在许多情况下都成为了切实可行的选择)”可知,作者提到极端天气是为了强调地球之船在适应极端气候方面的优势。故选A项。
根据第四段中的内容“Because the Earthship design is still in its experimental phase, many projects fail or are abandoned midway through, with intended homeowners losing thousands of dollars.(由于地球之船设计仍处于实验阶段,许多项目失败或中途被放弃,导致预期房主损失数千美元)”可知,建造地球之船的一个问题是失败风险高。
根据全文内容,尤其是第一段中的内容“In the pursuit of sustainable living, the Earthship concept has become a symbol of innovation. Earthships, pioneered by architect Michael Reynolds, are habitats that use the power of nature and recycled materials to create self-sufficient living spaces.(在追求可持续生活的过程中,“地球之船”的理念已成为创新的象征。

根据上文“Whether it’s for your health, environment or your wallet, gardening has seen a boom in recent years. Research has shown that spending more time outside is key to the nation’s well-being.(无论是为了你的健康、环境还是你的钱包,园艺近年来一直在蓬勃发展。研究表明,花更多的时间在户外是一个国家幸福的关键)”可知,上文提到研究表明花更多的时间在户外是一个国家幸福的关键,结合后文主要论述了从事园艺的好处,故F选项“大多数人投身于园艺之中,理由极为积极”与上文形成了逻辑上的衔接,说明了人们热衷于园艺的原因,即园艺活动能带来积极影响,符合语境,故选F。
【37题详解】
根据上文“There’s nothing like eating your own vegetables. Whether picking your own strawberries or unearthing the first new potatoes of the year, home-grown vegetables are a joy.(没有什么比吃自己的蔬菜更好的了。
根据上文“Simply being out and about in your garden invites interaction and conversation with neighbors and people in your local area, which in itself has multiple social benefits.(仅仅在你的花园里走走就能与邻居和当地人进行交流和对话,这本身就具有多种社交好处)”强调了园艺活动的社交功能,及下文“Joining them is a great way of meeting people and getting rid of unwanted-yet-perfectly-good-surplus plants, or gathering cuttings to keep the cost of buying plants down.(加入他们是一个很好的结识朋友的方式,可以摆脱不想要但非常好的多余植物,或者收集插枝以降低购买植物的成本)”具体论述加入某一个团体阻止,空处应承上启下,故G选项“此外,当地的园艺小组也可以提供宝贵的信息共享”进一步扩展了园艺活动的社交功能,提到了园艺小组作为信息共享的平台,与上文形成了逻辑上的延伸,并引出下文,符合语境,故选G。
根据上文“Did you know that 30 minutes of gardening burns as many calories as playing badminton? From digging, weeding to lopping and mowing, there’s a whole world of muscle movement.(你知道30分钟的园艺燃烧的卡路里和打羽毛球一样多吗?从挖掘、除草到割草、割草,这是一个肌肉运动的世界)”可知,本段主要说明了园艺属于运动,推测本句说明运动的注意事项。故D选项“然而,尽量减少扭伤和受伤的风险”与上文形成了逻辑上的补充,符合语境,故选D。
【40题详解】
根据下文“Garden is a vital home for many species and watching visiting birds, bees and butterflies can be unbelievably rewarding and relaxing for you. Accordingly, there will be a gradual decline in your stress levels.(花园是许多物种的重要家园,观看来访的鸟类、蜜蜂和蝴蝶对你来说是令人难以置信的收获和放松。因此,你的压力水平会逐渐下降)”可知,本段主要说明了花园作为野生动物的栖息地的重要性,以及观察这些野生动物对人们的益处。故A选项“别忘了野生动物”直接引出了下文的主题,即花园中的野生动物,符合语境,故选A。

I’m writing to appeal to you to protect rare birds.
It’s well-known that rare birds make our world more beautiful and lively, playing a significant role in maintaining the balance of our ecosystem.
However, human activities like hunting directly cause populations of rare birds to fall. Building farms or factories and the destruction of the forests have led to the loss of their habitats.
To protect rare birds, we should raise our awareness about the importance of rare birds and protect their habits.

My husband Erik and I had promised the kids a Labrador puppy.
I’d seen the ad at the local hardware store. “Thirteen puppies in all, “Sally, the owner, said when I called. ”There’ re only three left. “I decided to take a look the next day. The boys jumped and shouted excitedly as I copied down directions and hung up the phone.
Early the next morning, still discussing names, we wound our way through the mountains to meet our family’s new best friend. Our boys had simple names: Ike, Sam, Ben, and Dom, so they Preferred simple names like Rosy ,too. Finally, we met the sweet little dog. ” Rosy, “the boys called it softly. Our little puppy cocked her head. ” She likes it,“they cheered and set about making Rosy comfortable for the long drive home. They offered her a chew toy and lifted her up so she could see out the window. They took turns holding her in their arms lovingly and offered her a snack.
Though small, Rosy grew strong and healthy beneath her shiny black coat. And, just as I’d hoped, she was a calming addition to our houseful of noisy boys. But something was wrong. “It’s like she doesn’t know how to play,” Sam commented one day after school. “Dogs have different personalities, just like people,”I said. “Besides, she’s still very young. ” “But her legs aren’t very long, and one eye is smaller than the other,”Ike added, trying to make sense of why Rosy was different from other puppies he’d met.
I looked across the room to where Rosy sat between the boys. The last golden rays of autumn sunshine shone brightly on her face. Sure enough, one eye was misshapen. Not only that, it didn’t glint (闪光) in the afternoon light. I drew in a breath. Rosy, our puppy with a name as short as her four little legs, was blind in one eye.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
Everyone in the room became serious and sad.

_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Everyone in the room became serious and sad. The boys dropped their heads, looking heartbroken. “It’s unfair. ” Ike cried, tears in his eyes. Yes, it was unfair to the boys. They just wanted to have a little playmate, one that could see and run as well as any other dog. I shouldn’t have disappointed them in this way. But…the poor dog. Having hesitated for a little while, finally, I made a difficult decision. I walked to them, petted the dog, and then suggested giving it back and taking another healthy and lively little puppy.
Surprisingly, the boys refused to give the little puppy back. Sam held Rosy tightly in his arms and rubbed its fur. “Mommy, it’s not fair for the little dog. We should do something. We should love and care for her together. ” Ike looked straight into my eyes, begging to keep Rosy eagerly. The other boys joined immediately. It was then that I realized I had misunderstood them. Never had I expected my little boys had such great kindness. I was completely moved and nodded my head, “Yes, we’ll keep it. ”

Shi, a renowned writer who also uses a wheelchair, had transformed his struggles into literature.
24 Why did Ma Jun use Qing Bai Shijie as the title of the prose collection?
B. He also uses a wheelchair and has transformed his struggles into literature.
C. He suggested that Ma Jun’s lack of mobility was “divine punishment”.
D. He wrote a book called Qing Bai Shijie.
26. What is the meaning of writing for Ma Jun?
A. A way to connect with the world and leave a footprint.
B. A way to make a living.
C. A way to forget his struggles and find joy.
D. A hobby to pass the time.
27. Which one is the best to describe Ma Jun’s character according to the text?
A. Weak and negative. B. Generous and honest.
C. Tough and optimistic. D. Humorous and smart.

D. Risky.

注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
Everyone in the room became serious and sad.
