When you hit middle age, there are some universal truths you begin to notice and accept, and that goes double when you’re traveling with your parents. You really are turning into your mother(or father) … and maybe that is not such a terrible thing. I recently spent six days visiting my parents in their winter snowbird home just outside of Tampa, Florida. Mom and Dad were delighted in the tour guide role here in this middle ground, not our Indiana hometown and not British Columbia, where I’ve been living with my kids for years.
It felt strange at first, me being a “kid” again at age 50. It was a rare window when I wasn’t caring for my own kids and my parents, who were still healthy and mobile and didn’t yet need my care. I could relax. I could play. Without any responsibilities or distractions, I could savor (尽情享受) just being a daughter.
On this trip, I realized just how much I see myself in my parents. I was a little surprised to realize this fact didn’t make me roll my eyes and make an “I’m turning into my mother” joke. Instead, I found myself smiling and embracing turning into my mother and father, because that’s exactly who I’ve always been.
Traveling with my aging parents, I not only realized how lucky I am, but also knew this could be our last trip together, just the three of us. I couldn’t help but reflect on how delicate life is and how precious these moments of being together are. My parents are still together, in good health, and have mobility. I can’t think of anyone at my age who is in the same situation with their parents.
On the drive to the airport, Dad launched into his usual sort of closing paragraph that he does at the end of every visit. He mentioned the highlights of the week and asked about everyone else’s favorite memories from our time together. Then he shifted to what we wanted to do the next time. I smiled, realizing I do this closing paragraph too, when I’m saying goodbye to my girls.
4. What does the underlined word “that” in paragraph l refer to?
A. Traveling with parents at middle age.
B. Getting a deeper understanding of life.
C. Turning into a copy of one’s parents.
D. Finding more time to accompany parents.
5. Why did the author describe the trip as a rare window?
A. Because there was little time left for her aging parents.
B. Because it was a period to free herself of worries.
C. Because it was a good chance to reflect on herself.
D. Because it offered a valuable memory.
6. What conclusion does the author try to draw while traveling with her parents?
A. We are always kids in our parents’ eyes.
B. Parents’ present situation mirrors our future.
C. Be grateful and treasure the time with parents.
D. A closing speech to a child is a must for every parent.
7. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?
A. To share her reflection. B. To introduce a trip.
C. To remember her parents. D. To urge care for parents.
C
You have probably heard of the Fermi Paradox (费米悖论) . Given the high probability that alien (外星人) life exists out there in the universe, why has nobody got in touch yet?
Answers to the paradox range from the optimistic to the downright frightening. It could be that we simply haven’t sent out our own traceable signatures for aliens to find us yet. Or it could be that no aliens will ever make it to the point where they are able to make contact with other species.
In Three Body Problem, Cixin Liu’s science fiction, he describes the universe as a dark forest, where each alien society is like a fearful, armed hunter cautiously moving forth. If that hunter finds other life, he is left with the safest course of action: to wipe out any other lifeforms before they can do the same to him.
Being fearful contributes to humans’ development. Our caution may save our lives when facing a genuine threat. “Take the initiative in the competition, and you may sleep more securely while getting extra resources,” says Seth Shostak, a senior astronomer.
Thankfully, the Dark Forest has lots of issues that are difficult to resolve — the most obvious being that it’s extremely difficult to hide a technologically advanced world. “We’ve never given the slightest thought to turning off all the radars (雷达) and going completely silent because it might be dangerous,” says Shostak.
The forest theory also falls apart when you consider the true nature of the universe. “The distances between planets are likely to be so vast that the idea that they would feel the need to attack one another seems odd. Even if they fear each other, the expanse means that they wouldn’t likely need to compete for the near-limitless resources,” says Shostak.
That doesn’t necessarily mean that the Dark Forest theory is a nonstarter. Addressing the holes in the theory requires adding up the terror factor. Suppose that a technological civilization is going from star to star destroying any sign of life whenever planets with life or technology are found. We don’t see them because they’re not there. That’s the really scary thing.
8. What do we know about the Fermi Paradox?
A. It denies aliens’ existence. B. It is studied thoroughly.
C. Its answers vary considerably. D. Its answers are similar.
9. What can be inferred from Shostak’s words in Paragraph 4?
A. Fear is deadly. B. Attacks are risky.
C. Fear dominates humans’ development. D. Attacks has survival value.
10. Which factor challenges the Dark Forest theory according to Shostak?
A. Aliens may not understand human culture.
B. The vastness of space makes conflicts less likely.
C. Advanced civilizations tend to compete for survival.
D. Competition for resources could become more serious.
11. Why does the author make the assumption in the last paragraph?
A. To prove aliens are scary. B. To find holes in the theory.
C. To add to horrible atmosphere. D. To warn us of the potential threat.
D
When we encounter new information, the brain quickly goes into the pattern-recognition mode. If it reminds us of something we’ve encountered before, we know how to respond. But what will happen when the new information doesn’t “fit” with the existing understanding? That’s when the brain really gets excited. The brain doesn’t just detect new information— it needs novelty.
As Judy Willis, MD explains in How Your Child Learns Best, a part of the brain called the Reticular Activating System (RAS) filters (过滤) incoming information, deciding which data can be processed automatically and which deserves our full attention. Surprise and novelty are the attention-grabbers. In the classroom, this means that changing routines, asking students to analyze similarities and differences, organizing field trips, and inviting guest visitors all help keep learning fresh.
In his article How the Brain Learns Best, psychiatrist and child psychologist Bruce Perry explains why repetitive classroom activities, such as lectures or worksheets, limit the brain’s desire for novelty and can interfere with learning. “Only four to eight minutes of pure factual lecture can be tolerated before the brain seeks other information, either internal (daydreaming) or external (Who is that man walking down the hall?). If the teacher is not providing that novelty, the brain will go elsewhere,” he writes.
Integrating a strong arts program is one way educators can capture students’ curiosity and keep them engaged. According to a recent landmark report from the President’s Committee on the Arts and the Humanities, the benefits of studying the arts go far beyond enrichment. Research found that a high-quality program can improve student engagement, focus attention, heighten educational ambitions, and increase intellectual risk-taking. And planning inquiry-driven projects that are consistent with students’ interests will boost engagement and cut down on boredom, which is actually a stressor for young brains.
12. How does the brain deal with information according to Judy Willis, MD?
A. It classifies the information.
B. It ignores familiar information.
C. It spends long time analysing the information.
D. It stores new information automatically.
13. What does Bruce Perry argue in his article?
A. Keeping routines improves learning.
B. Giving lectures is the most effective way of teaching.
C. The brain longs for novelty to stay engaged in learning.
D External surroundings mean more than internal seeking regarding novelty.
14. How does the author develop the text?
A. By making comparisons. B. By quoting professional figures.
C. By presenting a personal statement. D. By introducing an experiment.
15. What can be the best title for the text?
A. The Importance of Novelty in Education
B. The Brain’s Response to New Information
C Effective Classroom Activities for Learning
D. Understanding the Reticular Activating System

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
There was a girl in my class named Krista. Krista didn’t like me. In fact, I thought she hated me. I was always the smallest in the class and maybe that made me easy to pick on. She would say, “Little girl, no one likes you, little girl!” She even punched me in the arm and I cried a lot in the bathroom. Finally one day, I decided to face the bullying (霸凌) . So right as the bell was about to ring, I went up to Krista, kicked her in the leg, and then ran as fast as I could. I was safe with the teacher in the classroom, but Krista beamed an evil look and said, “Be scared. I’ll get you later.”
I worked hard at avoiding her the rest of the year. I remembered telling my mom about it, and she comforted me by saying “Nobody can tell you how little you are—you decide how big you will be.” I really liked that saying.
I would say it in my head often and find strength in these words. But the thought of Krista’s bullying didn’t die in my mind.
One day, I received a letter about my coming-of-age ceremony, the biggest day of my youth. Then I read who my partner would be. KRISTA. How could this be? She was the source of all my anxiety and insecurity and yet this day was supposed to show my strength, pride, and wisdom.
When the day came, Krista and I both acted civil. I could tell she wasn’t pleased either. When I read my speech, I read loudly and confidently. I had practiced long and hard. I saw my friends and family smiling at me, and I focused just on them.
Then it was Krista’s turn. She was shaking. I was shocked at how nervous and scared the bully seemed. I suddenly felt something that I never imagined feeling toward Krista—sympathy. I had always dreamed of the day I could laugh in her face and make her feel as little as she made me feel. But now, I didn’t want to do it anymore.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
I sat down next to the crying girl after the ceremony, as her hands remained over her eyes.

【答案】4. C 5. B 6. C 7. A

【答案】8. C 9. D 10. B 11.

D. External surroundings mean more than internal seeking regarding novelty.
14. How does the author develop the text?
A. By making comparisons. B. By quoting professional figures.
C. By presenting a personal statement. D. By introducing an experiment.
15. What can be the best title for the text?
A. The Importance of Novelty in Education
B. The Brain’s Response to New Information
C. Effective Classroom Activities for Learning
D. Understanding the Reticular Activating System
【答案】12. A 13. C 14. B 15. A

【答案】参考范文
I sat down next to the crying girl after the ceremony, as her hands remained over her eyes. I couldn’t help putting my hand on her shoulder and told her that everything would be fine. She murmured, “I always envy you having so many friends and supportive family.” Despite the hurtful things she had done to me, I realized that she might also have her own struggles. She could barely look me in the eye, and then she whispered, “Thank you. I was never nice to you… I’m sorry.”
I smiled and gave her my forgiveness. Though her words caught me off guard, I could see the guilt and sincerity in her eyes. It was a moment of realization for both of us, as we began to see each other in a different light. I told her what my mom had told me the year before, “Nobody can tell you how little you are-you decide how big you will be.” Hopefully, those words would give her the strength that they gave to me. I truly believe I became an adult that day.
