The college student from central China's Hubei province cycled over 1,000 kilometers to Shanghai in 19 days to highlight the importance of environmental protection, receiving high praise from related departments. Huang Xi's journey started on Aug 3 from Xiaochang county, Hubei, spreading the message of environmental protection to over 5, 000 people along his route.Huang said it was not very easy to start a conversation about environmental protection with strangers."First you have to narrow the distance between you and your audience, " he noted. For instance, he would greet people at the roadside and introduce himself and his plan.He told Shanghai Observer that the environmental issue was not a good conversation opener because not everyone was interested. Straw burning(秸秆焚烧) was a major focus for Huang since his journey began in summer."Many people don't burn straw because there s a fine, but not many of them know that burning straw actually pollutes the environment,” he said. Explaining the ban on straw burning, the benefits of sorting of waste as well as the importance of creatures in water and plants protection were the major part of his job on the road. 16 local authorities of environmental protection along Huang's route praised his efforts."Environmental protection calls for not only governmental efforts but also social efforts, " said Chen Bin, an official from Wuhan's environmental department. Huang shared his experience on social media, which gave him a level of support on his journey. However, his cycle also drew the bad side of comments. Some said that his journey was only a publicity stunt (作秀), and some even said that in fact, it was a trip that Huang had to make since he ran out of his money at Internet cafes.Huang replied and tried to prove that what they said was not true. Huang, who studies environmental engineering in college, set off again on Sept 27 to take part in a training camp held by a center of environmental protection in Hubei province."I will will share my experience of the journey, and hope people will pay more attention to the environment.” he said. 4. Environmental protection needs only social efforts. D. It's a good idea to start a conversation by environmental issues. 6. When did Huang finish the cycling? A. On July.3. B. On Sep. 27. C. On Aug. 22.5 D. On Oct. 3. 7. What is the attitude of the related departments to the cycling? A. They think highly of it. B. They disagree with it. C. They show no interest in it. D. Even experts in education think that the first goal of education is to encourage a love of learning. There is therefore the possibility of something wrong with the way students are taught here. Why should they read literature? Do stories have value compared with the reading and learning of facts? Studies show clearly that the most powerful ways of learning are by experience, action and doing experiments and taking risks. Yet there are so many important things to learn that cannot be learned in these ways: feelings, problem solving, danger and relationships, for example. Research into this has shown how deep reading is a valuable experience different to a learning of words or facts. Keen( 热心的) readers of -literature show a better understanding of others. Their abilities to make good decisions are raised. Young children who enjoy a parent reading stories to them show greater awareness(意识) when they reach school age. The best schools do seem to provide a limited (有限的) chance to enjoy literature, usually about the Chinese classic stories but there is not enough "free" time for students. There are enough reading materials (材料). Chinese book shops are full of story books, and most of them are of good quality (质量) in terms of content, plot (情节) and language. Was there not a Chinese author who received a Nobel Prize for literature recently? There are moves in Chinese education to promote (提升) decision making and shared values. The value of literature is helpful to these as well as to the future of China. 8. What does the author think of the way students are educated in China? A. He is proud of it. B. He is interested in it. C. He doesn't quite accept it. D. He is confident about it. 9. Which is not among the most powerful ways of learning according to paragraph 2? A. By experience. B. By taking risks. C. By reading deeply. D. By doing experiments. 10. What can be learned from the last paragraph? A. Reading literature helps develop good values. B. Chinese students like reading stories as they get older. C. Stories in Chinese bookstores are generally of poor quality. D. Chinese students have no chance to read enough materials. 11. What's the main idea of the text? A. Literature is a kind of art. B. Reading literature should be valued. C. Good reading materials are in great need. D. Something is wrong with Chinese education. C 9. C 10. A 11. There is therefore the possibility of something wrong with the way students are taught here.(因此,这里的学生的教育方式可能有问题。) Studies show clearly that the most powerful ways of learning are by experience, action and doing experiments and taking risks.(研究清楚地表明,最有效的学习方法是通过经验、行动、实验和冒险。) There are moves in Chinese education to promote decision making and shared values. The value of literature is helpful to these as well as to the future of China.(中国的教育中有一些促进决策制定和价值观共享的举措。 故选A。 The importance of reading literature often seems lost on many Chinese people.(许多中国人似乎忽视了阅读文学作品的重要性。) There are moves in Chinese education to promote decision making and shared values. The value of literature is helpful to these as well as to the future of China.(中国的教育中有一些促进决策制定和价值观共享的举措。 B。 D Many leading AI researchers think that in a matter of decades, artificial intelligence will be able to do not merely some of our jobs, but all of our jobs, forever transforming life on the earth. The reason why many people reject this as science fiction is that we’ve traditionally thought of intelligence as something mysterious that can only exist in biological organisms, especially humans. But such an idea is unscientific. From my point of view as a physicist and AI researcher, intelligence is simply a certain kind of information-processing performed by elementary particles (基本粒子) moving around, and there is no law of physics that says one can’t build machines more intelligent than us in all ways. This suggests that we’ve only seen the tip of the intelligence iceberg and that there is an amazing potential to unlock the full intelligence that is potential in nature and use it to help humanity. If we get it right, the upside is huge. Since everything we love about civilization is the product of intelligence, amplifying our own intelligence with AI has the potential to solve tomorrow’s toughest problems. For example, why risk our loved ones dying in traffic accidents that self-driving cars could prevent or dying of cancers that AI might help us find cures for? Why not increase productivity through automation and use AI to accelerate our research and development of affordable sustainable (可持续的) energy? I’m optimistic that we can develop rapidly with advanced AI as long as we win the race between the growing power of our technology and the knowledge with which we manage it. But this requires giving up our outdated concept of learning from mistakes. That helped us win the race with less powerful technology. We messed up with fire and then invented fire extinguishers (灭火器), and we messed up with cars and then invented seat belts. However, it’s an awful idea for more powerful technologies, such as nuclear weapons or super intelligent AI-where even a single mistake is unacceptable and we need to get things right the first time. 12. How do many people feel about leading AI researchers’ predictions? A. Worried. B. Curious. C. Doubtful. D. Disappointed. 13. What does the author think of intelligence? A. We know little about it. B. It belongs to human beings. C. It is too difficult to understand. D. We have a good command of it. 14. What does the underlined word “upside” in Paragraph 4 probably mean? A. Cost. B. Potential. C. Quantity. D. Advantage. 15. What’s important for us in the race between people and technology? A. Learning from failure. B. Increasing our intelligence. C. Avoiding making mistakes. D. Making accurate predictions. C 13. A 14. D 15. 根据第二段中的“The reason why many people reject this as science fiction is that we’ve traditionally thought of intelligence as something mysterious that can only exist in biological organisms, especially humans. 根据第三段中的“we’ve only seen the tip of the intelligence iceberg. 故选A项。 根据划线词后句“Since everything we love about civilization is the product of intelligence, amplifying our own intelligence with AI has the potential to solve tomorrow’s toughest problems. 根据最后一段中“we can develop rapidly with advanced AI...giving up our outdated concept of learning from mistakes. Last week, we talked about how to start and organize your English Club. 4. What is the purpose of Huang's cycling? A. To have a good sightseeing. B. To receive high praise from related departments. C. To let people know the importance of protecting environment. D. To solve the problem of straw burning. 5. What can we learn from the text? A. Huang's cycle didn't draw any attention. B. What Huang studies in college is related to environment. C. D. They doubt it. C The importance of reading literature often seems lost on many Chinese people. B. D Many leading AI researchers think that in a matter of decades, artificial intelligence will be able to do not merely some of our jobs, but all of our jobs, forever transforming life on the earth. Last week, we talked about how to start and organize your English Club.
