People often ask how I decide where to go, and I usually get hesitated with my response, as I don’t actually have an answer to that. For more than three years, I have been making movements with the universe, traveling from location to location at seemingly random intervals.
A friend of mine posted a Facebook status asking if anybody was interested in a job teaching English in China. So I jumped on a coming plane. Walking into my first class, I was bombed by 16 strange children who couldn’t understand a single word out of my mouth. When I walked out of my last class, six months later, I had made a personal connection with them. Some of my students could barely speak Chinese or English. But somehow, through determination and force, we connected.
Every class was not only a lesson in English, but in good fellowship, being a role model, being a parent, and being a friend. I became a father to some, an older brother to others. I was loved and adored, feared and hated. I had to learn discipline, and not only how to deal it out, but how to discipline and conduct myself as a role model. But in between the discipline, I had to make learning a fun experience. And they forgave me when I yelled or got upset. And when they threw temper or bruised their knee or missed their mommy, I forgave them, kissed their bruises better, and gave them a shoulder to cry on.
Teaching English in China is, by far, the most emotionally rewarding and fulfilling thing I’ve ever challenged myself to do. I have walked away from this job with a softened heart, knowing that I have made a difference in so many lives. I want that. I want my teachings to be reciprocal because they taught me how to unconditionally open my heart and how to be a more 1oving and patient person.
9. What can we learn about the writer before he came to China?
A. He didn’t have a fixed job. B. He was a professional writer.
C. He worked in a travel agency. D. He taught in a language school.
10. What was the situation like when the author met his students for the first time?
A. Hard. B. Exciting.
C Touching. D. Inspiring.
11. What can we infer about the author from Paragraph 3?
A. He was casual and patient.
B He was responsible but sensitive.
C. He was cautious but bad-tempered.
D. He was self-reflective and considerate.
12. What does the underlined word “reciprocal” in Paragraph 4 most probably mean?
A. Beneficial. B. Interacted.
C. Encouraging. D. Acceptable.
C
When most people think of drones (无人机), they think of technology and fun. Safe to say, few people would think about farming. However, a group of students from York College of Pennsylvania have been building a drone that will not only help local farmers but the environment, as well.
Samantha Gotwalt and Blayde Reich, two senior Mechanical Engineering majors at York College in the group, both found the work to be quite fascinating. According to Samantha, the idea came from a York College professor, who has worked with drones, and wanted to get students involved with a project beneficial to the community. “We really want to help farming and agriculture. It’s super-important to America and our economy,” Blayde says. “We want to help the smaller farmers, and one of the perks is not having to spend their money on fertilizer and pesticides (杀虫剂).”
The idea is to design and build a drone that will take video imagery of the fields to determine what is needed to produce the best crop, while saving money and sparing the environment by reducing pollutants in the water runoff. Ideally, that data gained will help the farmers better determine what chemicals they need — and what they don’t.
However, finding the right equipment for the project was a challenge, starting with what drone the team would design for this particular usage. Samantha says she researched durability and control of drones to help make the proper determination.
“We are flying over the field and we want to have enough efficiency and go relatively slow enough that our pictures turn out well - and fly low enough that it is not using up all of its power,” she says. “The fields are a couple hundred acres(英亩), so you need your drone to be able to fly the length of that field.”
Blayde says the team continues to learn a great deal of information that will help the farmers and the environment.
13. What does the underlined word “perks” in paragraph 2 refer to?
A. Challenges. B. Features. C. Benefits. D. Solutions.
14. What particular usage is the drone designed for?
A. Spreading proper quantities of pesticides.
B. Helping to determine the chemicals needed.
C. Assisting to monitor the state of crops.
D. Measuring the areas of the fields.
15. What technical issue of the drone shall be tackled?
A. Its camera capacity. B. Its data collection ability.
C. Its durability and control. D. Its material and efficiency.
16. What can best describe the students?
A. Disciplined and realistic. B. Experienced and reliable.
C. Humble and reserved. D. Responsible and creative.
D
Are people less happy or more happy the older they get? A study found that people generally become happier and experience less worry after age 50. In fact, it found that by the age of 85, people are happier with their life than they were at 18.
The finding came from a Gallup survey of more than 340,000 adults between the age of 18 and 85 in the United States.
Arthur Stone in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Science at Stony Brook University in New York led the study. His team found that levels of stress were highest among adults between the ages of 22 and 25. Stress levels dropped sharply after people reached their fifties.
Happiness was highest among the youngest adults and those in their early seventies. But the people least likely to report feeling negative emotions were those in their seventies and eighties. The survey also found that men and women had similar emotional patterns as they grow older. However, women at all ages reported more sadness, stress and worry than men did.
The researchers also considered possible influences like having young children, being unemployed or being single. But they found that influences like these did not affect the levels of happiness and well-being related to age.
So why would happiness increase with age? One theory is that, as people get older, they become more thankful for what they have and have better control of their emotions. They also spend less time thinking about bad experiences.
The original goal of the study was to confirm the popular belief that aging is connected with increased sleep problems. The survey did find an increase during middle age, especially in women. But except for that, people reported that they felt their sleep quality improved as they got older.
17. Old people may be happier probably because _________.
A. their children have grown up B. they don’t have to work every day
C. they can do whatever they like best D. they are most likely satisfied with life
18. According to the survey, when will adults feel most stressful?
A. In their twenties. B. In their fifties.
C. In their seventies. D. In their eighties.
19. What may make Arthur Stone a bit surprised?
A. Women usually live longer than men. B. Middle-age men mostly are very rich.
C. Old people usually have a better sleep. D. Most of old people can’t sleep well at night.
20. Which of the following may be the topic of this passage?
A. The difference between men and women. B. Old people’s feeling of happiness.
C. The young people and the old people. D. The connection of sleep and happiness.

【75题答案】
【答案】Dear David,
I’m sorry to hear that you’re struggling with short video addiction. It’s important to understand that excessive use of short videos can harm your health and academic performance. Firstly, it can lead to eye strain and sleep problems. Secondly, it may distract you from studying, reducing your efficiency.
To overcome this, I suggest setting a daily time limit for watching short videos and using apps to block access after the limit is reached. Additionally, try engaging in healthier activities like reading or exercising to replace the habit. Remember, small steps can lead to big changes.
Yours,
Li Hua
