[话题语篇提升]
Although Heracleion was once an important economic centre, it was destroyed by the forces of nature, sinking rapidly in the water. The remains of the city’s houses, temples, and markets have lain ten metres deep in the Abu Qir Bay, east of presentday Alexandria. As a result, underwater explorers regularly make exciting discoveries there. Among them, statues and stone tablets with words made it possible to figure out the city’s name: Heracleion.
Researchers explained that the ship was 25 metres long. The discovery of the shipwreck was fascinating because ships from that period in history were very seldom. The underwater research showed that the ship was struck by several big stones from the nearby temple, making the ship at the bottom of the sea. Dr Mustafa Waziri, SecretaryGeneral of the Higher Archaeology Council, said the ship was in the canal which flowed along the side of the Temple of Amun. An earthquake struck the city, destroying the temple and making the ship sink.
While the shipwreck discovery was exciting, underwater explorers discovered the remains of a Greek cemetery dating back to the 4th century BC during the underwater exploration. Researchers explained that the discovery shows the Greek traders lived in the city. They built their own temples near the Temple of Amun, and the remains of both have been found together and in good condition in the sunken city some 7 miles off the coast of Egypt. It is worth noting that the city of Heracleion had been the largest port in Egypt across the Nile Delta, before the city of Alexandria was founded in 331 BC.Several earthquakes destroyed it.

Marine biologists have documented perhaps a tenth of the 2 million species of marine animals the oceans might host. Experts point out that scientists have mapped nearly all of the surface of the Mars, but less than a quarter of the seabed.
A new project hopes to change this. Launched in London on April 27th, Ocean Census aims to discover 100,000 new species of marine animals in 10 years. The project is happening now for two reasons. One is that, the longer scientists wait, the fewer there will be to document.
Climate change is heating the oceans. One of Ocean Census’s priorities will be documenting species thought to be in danger from climate change. The second reason is technological. Marine biologists find about 2,000 new species a year, a rate hardly changed since Darwin’s day. Ocean Census thinks it can go faster. Fancy cameras on remote-operated vehicles allow scientists to scan deepsea creatures without removing them from their habitat. Taking such creatures to the surface for examination is as fatal as the pressures of the deep sea are for humans.
Ocean Census isn’t the first attempt to conduct a systematic survey of life in the oceans. The Census of Marine Life was a ten-year effort, begun in 2000, to seek out new species. The Global Ocean Sampling Expedition from 2004 to 2006 aimed to document life in the sea by sampling waters from across the world. What the new effort might turn up is impossible to predict. But history suggests it will be fruitful. Many drugs, for example, are originally made biologically, but one type of marine snail, Conus magus, was recently discovered to produce a painkilling material 1,000 times more effective than medicine.
To help make use of its data, Ocean Census plans to make it freely available to scientists and the public. The point of exploration, after all, is that you never know what you might find.
( )5.What does the new project hope to do?
A.To document more ocean animals.
B.To map out the ocean conditions.
C.To improve the ocean climate.
D.To sort out endangered species.
A
( )6.Why is it possible for Ocean Census to speed up its work?
A.People are aware of the importance of ocean protection.
B.Scientists have waited long to document ocean species.

D.Technology has enabled people to study species undersea.
D
( )7.What will the study of Conus magus lead us to do?
A.To sample ocean waters of the whole world.
B.To begin a systematic survey of ocean life.
C.To produce an effective painkilling material.
D.To document and save endangered species.
C
( )8.Which can be a suitable title for the text?
