Once upon a time, there lived a farmer who grew very good corn. Each year, he would take part in the state farmers’ fair and win a top award for his corn.
The story of the farmer’s success reached the ears of a reporter who wanted to interview the farmer. While he was learning about the farmer’s growing skills, he found that the farmer shared his best quality seeds (种子) with his neighbors.
“How can you afford to share your best corn seeds with your neighbors when some of them might go to the fair as well?” the reporter asked.
“Why wouldn’t I?” the farmer replied. “The wind picks up pollen (花粉) from the corn and moves it from field to field. If my neighbors grow poor quality corn, cross pollination (授粉) will finally degrade (降低) the quality of my corn too. If I am to grow high quality corn, I must help my neighbors grow good corn too.”
The farmer’s answer made the reporter understand how aware the old farmer was about connections in life.
It is the same with our lives. Those who want to live in peace must help others around them to live in peace too. Those who wish to be loved must first learn to love others too. Those who wish to live well must help others live well too, as the value of our lives has something to do with the lives we touch.
29. Why did the farmer win a top award in the state farmers’ fair each year?
A. Because he asked his neighbours not to take part in the fair.

When you think of the sea, you may not think of Xinjiang or Inner Mongolia. But recently, the “seafood” produced in these places has become popular, especially after Japan put nuclear-contaminated water (核污染水) into the sea, reported China Daily.
In Nilka county (尼勒克县) in Xinjiang, about 6,000 tons of rainbow trout (虹鳟鱼) will be produced this year. Rainbow trout belongs to the same family as salmon, which is a kind of well-known seafood. It tastes like salmon too.
Why do farmers there choose to grow fish? The weather in some parts of Xinjiang is seldom hot, and the rivers are fed by meltwater (融水) from the Tianshan Mountains. Water deeper than 6 meters always stays at 10 ℃. As the meltwater is very clean and cold, it’s a “comfortable” home for fish, Li Chunyu, a worker at a fish company in Xinjiang, told China Daily.
To make sure the river stays clean, the company uses machines to clean fish waste in the water. They also use net cages that are good for the environment. The nets are about 51 meters wide and lie 25 meters deep in the river.
Meanwhile, in Inner Mongolia, whiteleg shrimp (南美白对虾) grows well. Saline soil covers a large part of the desert where few plants are able to grow. Farmers used to put water from the Yellow River onto the farmland to wash away the salt. This was a waste of salty water.
Scientists then decided to create “seawater” with the salty water by adding in some other components. Whiteleg shrimps can live well in this kind of water. They taste no different from the same kind of shrimp that grows in the sea.
32.Rainbow trout comfortably live in ________ .
A.any open water area B.warm and clean rivers
C.salty and warm oceans D.cold and clean rivers
33.People turn their eyes from Japan’s seafood to Xinjiang’s because ________ .

C.people find a new ocean in Xinjiang D.Xinjiang produces all kinds of seafood
34.Why is whiteleg shrimp introduced in the article?
A.To show the importance of rivers to a country.
B.To introduce the safety of eating seafood.
C.To compare it with common whiteleg shrimp.
D.To show another “seafood” grown without using the sea.
35.What can you infer from the article?
A.Life will not be different without seafood. B.Xinjiang is rich in natural resources.
C.China won’t be short of fishery products.
D.Japan shouldn’t let out nuclear-contaminated water.

Dr Livesey was not at home, he was dining with Squire Trelawney, so we rode on to the hall, where the squire lived. The two men were sitting in a great library next to a bright fire.
The officer told the story. The two men listened with surprise and interest. The officer then left. I gave the papers to the doctor and they asked me to stay and eat something after my adventures.
“Have you heard of Flint?” Dr Livesey asked the square.
“Yes, I have!” the square replied. “He was one of the most dangerous pirates that ever sailed the seas. He only cared about money and everyone was afraid of him. No-one knows where he buried his treasure.”
“Maybe these papers give a clue,” said the doctor. And we opened the captain’s papers. Inside there was a detailed map. It showed an island, about nine miles long and five across. It had two good natural harbours and a hill in the centre, marked Spy-glass Hill. There were three crosses in red, two in the northern part and one in the south-west. Beside the last cross were the words: Most of treasure here.
On the back of the map was this information:
The treasure is by a tall tree. Spy-glass Hill is behind you to the north, Skeleton Island is below you to the south-east. The silver is in the north-east and the guns are in the north-west.
John Flint
Both the squire and Dr Livesey were very excited.
“Livesey,” said the squire, “we must stop work immediately. Tomorrow I’ll go to Bristol. In ten days we’ll have the best ship and crew in England. Hawkins will come as the cabin-boy. You, Livesey, will be the ship’s doctor. I can be the captain. We will have a good journey, and easily find the treasure. Then we’ll have enough money to live happily ever after.”
“Of course I’ll come with you,” said the doctor. “But we must be careful. The men who attacked the inn know about this map. They are dangerous and they also want the treasure. None of us must say a word to anyone about what we’ve found.”

How to Face Grade Nine
We have been here in Grade Nine, one of the most important years for us students, for over eight months. Some of us feel good, while some do not. How should we face this year?
First of all, be confident. We should believe nothing is impossible. Don’t lose heart, or you can achieve nothing. Second, be hard-working. If we work hard enough, we are sure to make progress. We should also learn to be careful because a miss is as good as a mile. Carelessness leads to low marks. Third, we should plan our time well. And it’s important to keep a balance between work and play. Finally, we should know how to deal with our stress. When having worries, remember to share them with others or turn to your teachers or your parents for help. Keeping your worries to yourself can make them worse.
Face the year wisely. It is you who shape your life and future!
