The spaces between the steel trusses are filled with a translucent membrane, just as birds stuff the empty spaces in their nests with materials. The Cube Houses, Rotterdam Despite all the hard angles and straight lines, architect Piet Blom actually took inspiration from a forest of trees when designing these Dutch houses back in 1977. Each bright yellow cube is uniquely tilted (倾斜的) on its side by 45 degrees and fixed to a hexagon-shaped pylon (六边形塔架), representing a tree. The entrance to each three-level house lies inside the concrete “trunk” that contains a staircase. Helix Bridge, Singapore An international team gathered in Singapore and designed this footbridge stretching over Marina Bay, linking the famous hotel and shopping center with the ArtScience Museum and Gardens by the Bay. Opened in 2010, the 919-foot long curved structure has five viewing platforms, giving people wonderful views of the skyline from across the waterfront. 1. What was the original purpose of building Atomium? A. To hold sports events. B. To serve as a museum. C. To host a World’s Fair. D. To prove scientific progress. 2. What is special about the Cube Houses? A. They have very soft lines. B. Each cube is tilted by 45 degrees. C. They contain a staircase in each house. D. They’re designed by a famous architect. 3 What can people do on Helix Bridge? A. Admire the splendid skyline. B. Practise diving into Marina Bay. C. Do some shopping on the bridge. D. Learn the structures of molecules. B I’m a zoologist and director of the Sloth (树懒) Conservation Foundation in Puerto Viejo de Talamanca, Costa Rica. I’m equipping the world’s slowest mammal with data-logging backpacks to better understand sloths’ behaviour. It’s surprisingly hard to catch a sloth. Although they’re slow — very, very slow — if you climb a tree to catch one, it will move along to the next tree. Once you climb the new tree, it will move back again. My team do this regularly, as we conduct the Sloth Backpack Project, a data-logging organization here in Costa Rica, where many sloths co-exist with people. In 2017, I wanted to do more than research, so I started the Sloth Conservation Foundation. Now, I’m fitting a backpack to a brown-throated three-fingered sloth that we named Baguette, after a nearby bakery. The backpack will collect data on her location, movement and living patterns. We had found Baguette about 20 minutes earlier, balancing at the top of construction fencing as she attempted to escape two bulls. Baguette wasn’t all that grateful. She’s an old girl. She’s old: she’s missing fingers, and she’s got scars on her face. I admire and envy sloths. They’re a powerful symbol of the slowness that our society needs more of. They don’t let anything stress them out unless it’s really important — they just get on with life. This year, I received a £50,000 Future For Nature award, which we will use to train a dog to detect sloth feces (粪便). We can use feces as a sign for sloth numbers and locations in the region, and eventually work out the boundaries of the species, how fast the populations are declining and which conservation measures work. I’m happy I’ve moved away from academia (学术界) — I can put all my energy into conservation. That’s what I feel ecology should focus on — how we can use what we’re learning to give back to other species. 4. What’s the function of data-logging backpacks? A. To help sloths to climb. B To hold important books. C. To study sloths’ behaviour. D. To protect a sloth from its enemies. 5. Why was Baguette at the top of construction fencing? A. The author injured her face. B. She was there just for a rest. C. The author got too close to her. D. She was trying to keep herself safe. 6. What’s the author’s attitude toward sloths’ slowness? A. Appreciative. B. Regretful. C. Annoyed. D. Amused. 7. The author will make use of sloths’ feces to . A. train the dog for her study B. help with their conservation C. study more animals in the future D. donate to an academic institution C After every great dinner with friends or family, there comes a difficult moment. The pie or cake arrives on the table, magnificent. But having just gorged (狼吞虎咽) on the meal, I can’t enjoy dessert. What’s a candy lover to do? The best time for digestion may be earlier in the day, according to Ellen Anderson, a registered dietitian. In fact, an after-dinner treat could contribute to heartburn, upset stomach or just poor sleep when enjoyed too close to bedtime. It takes about one to two hours to digest carbohydrates (bread, noodles, crackers). And if you add more components such as protein and fat, you will increase digestion time. Dessert is part of celebrations, enjoyment and pure pleasure, so if you feel like eating it later in the day or evening, that’s fine too. You can eat dessert any time of day that you want. If you allow your body to help determine what you want to eat and it’s hungry for dessert — have the dessert! Oftentimes people limit the diet of dessert or sweets during the day even if they are craving them, which can lead to them feeling out of control around sweets later in the day.  This means: Enjoy dessert if you feel like it! It’s better to have the sweet than become addicted to it for both your mental and physical well-being. A recent research article concluded that “food, such as dessert, can change healthy food preferences for immediate consumption”. Eating food isn’t just for nourishment (营养) but for pleasure as well. Just because you’re physically full doesn’t mean that you’ve necessarily done eating. Meals and snacks need to also be satisfying for us to feel we’ve “done” eating. If thoughts or feelings of shame, guilt or judgment come up, that can also take away the enjoyment and satisfaction that you may get from dessert. If you enjoy having something sweet after your meals (even when you’re full), you should know that’s OK. 8. What does the author intend to do in paragraph 1? A. Prove he is a candy lover. B. Tell us the dessert is delicious. C. Introduce the topic of the text. D. Show difficult moments at dinner. 9. What does Ellen Anderson most probably agree with? A. Dessert is very easy to digest. B. An after-dinner treat is good after supper. C. Eating snacks before sleep is bad for sleep. D. Bread, noodles and crackers aren’t fit for supper. 10. What does the underlined part “are craving” in paragraph 3 probably mean? A. Desire...greatly. B. Are eating...like a horse. C. Ignore...on purpose. D. Are preparing...carefully. 11. What can we infer from the last paragraph? A. Eating too many snacks is bad for health. B. Try not to eat anything if you feel quite full. C. For humans eating food is just for nourishment. D. Eating favorite dessert can make you mentally full. D Americans are walking away from their jobs in record numbers due to various reasons. To solve the problem, more companies are turning to “stay interviews”, one-on-one meetings with top performers to give those key people the chance to talk about their current jobs. “This has become an extremely popular topic...to try and help retain employees as much as possible,” said Robyn Hopper, a HR knowledge adviser. Managers who conduct stay interviews are coached to ask workers open-ended questions about what they like most about their jobs, what they dislike and under what events or circumstances they might leave. The idea, Hopper said, is to ask questions similar to what employees might be asked in exit interviews — but before they actually quit. “It gives employees more of a voice as far as the good, the bad and the ugly,” she said. Scott Bonneau, the vice president of global talent attraction at Indeed.com, said, “With the labor market conditions the way they are, it’s very much a buyer’s market for talent. Employers, particularly in certain sectors, are seeing people leave at a faster rate. I think stay interviews can be quite effective. It promotes trust and open communication.” Sometimes workers switch jobs in pursuit of higher salaries, but recruiters (招聘人员) say a significant factor is the higher expectations of job applicants today when it comes to feeling seen and supported by their bosses. “People don’t leave companies. People leave managers,” said Dave Carvajal, the CEO of Dave Partners, a tech industry recruiting firm. Other departures are driven by chances to have more flexible hours, remote work or professional development opportunities. “It can be difficult for employers to keep up with the demands of the market,” Bonneau said. “Stay interviews are ways for employers to hear directly from employees.” While experts say stay interviews can be a valuable tool to retain top employees, there is one big warning: Bosses have to actually follow through on the feedback they get. 12. Why are employers turning to stay interviews? A. To bring in more employees. B. To reduce the outflow of talent. C. To increase employees’ income. D. To equip employees with more skills. 13. Which of the following question may an employer ask during a stay interview? A. Why did you quit your last job? B. What can you tell me about yourself? C. What experience do you have in this field? D. How do you evaluate the working conditions? 14. What is the reason for workers’ switching jobs according to Dave Carvajal? A. Disappointment in salaries. B. Tiredness of remote work. C. Preference for flexible hours. D. Dissatisfaction with leadership. 15. What can be the best title for the text? A. Americans walk off their jobs B. Raise your concerns about your current job C. American employers roll out stay interviews D. At the time, I didn’t consider this to be so important, although today it certainly would be. Actually, our lunch time together in the past years had had a great influence on my life before I realized it. Our lunch time when I was in the third grade will stay with me always. I had been picked to be the princess in the school play, and for weeks my mother had painstakingly practised my lines with me. But no matter how easily I delivered them at home, as soon as I stepped onstage, every word disappeared from my head. Finally, my teacher took me aside. She explained patiently that she needed a narrator and had written a narrator’s part to the play, and asked me to switch roles. Her words, kindly delivered, still hurt me, especially when I saw my part go to another girl. I didn’t tell my mother what had happened when I went home for lunch that day. But she sensed my unease, and instead of suggesting we practice my lines, she asked if I wanted to walk in the yard. It was a lovely spring day and the rose vine (藤) was turning green. Under the huge trees, we could see yellow dandelions (蒲公英) appearing unexpectedly through the grass in bunches, as if a painter had touched our landscape with small amounts of gold. I watched my mother casually bend down by one of the bushes. “I think I’m going to dig up all these weeds,” she said, pulling a blossom up by all its roots. “From now on, we’ll have roses in this garden.” I immediately protested, “But I like dandelions. All flowers are beautiful—even dandelions.” Paragraph 1: “Do you mean that every flower has its own beauty?” asked my mother thoughtfully. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Paragraph 2: “But you will be a beautiful narrator,” Mom said. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$ 高一英语月考试卷 (120分钟 150分) 第一部分 听力(共两节,满分30分) 第一节 (共5小题;每小题1.5分,满分7.5分) 听下面5段对话。 1.Who is unfriendly? B. To hold important books. C. To study sloths’ behaviour. D. To protect a sloth from its enemies. 5 Why was Baguette at the top of construction fencing? A. train the dog for her study B. help with their conservation C. study more animals in the future D. donate to an academic institution 【答案】4. C 5. D 6. A 7. 根据首段中的“I’m equipping the world’s slowest mammal with data-logging backpacks to better understand sloths’ behaviour.(我正在为世界上行动最缓慢的哺乳动物装备数据记录背包,以便更好地了解树懒的行为)”可知,作者正在为树懒装上数据记录背包,目的是更好地研究树懒的行为。 根据第三段中的“We had found Baguette about 20 minutes earlier, balancing at the top of construction fencing as she attempted to escape two bulls. Baguette wasn’t all that grateful.(大约20分钟前,我们发现了Baguette,她正试图躲避两头公牛而平衡在施工围栏的顶部。Baguette并不怎么感激我们的帮助)”可知,这只树懒稳稳地立在建筑围栏的顶部是为了逃离两头公牛的攻击,由此可知,它在试图保护自己。故选D项。 【6题详解】 推理判断题。根据第四段中的“I admire and envy sloths. They’re a powerful symbol of the slowness that our society needs more of. They don’t let anything stress them out unless it’s really important — they just get on with life.(我羡慕并欣赏树懒。它们是我们社会需要更多拥有的慢节奏生活的强大象征。除非真的非常重要,否则没有什么能让它们感到压力——它们只是继续生活)”可知,作者很赏识树懒能对抗压力的精神,因为这是我们这个社会所需要的。故选A项。 根据尾段中的“We can use feces as a sign for sloth numbers and locations in the region, and eventually work out the boundaries of the species, how fast the populations are declining and which conservation measures work.(我们可以利用粪便作为树懒数量和位置的指标,并最终确定物种的边界,种群下降的速度以及哪些保护措施有效)”可知,作者将利用树懒的粪便来帮助树懒的保护工作。故选B项。 C After every great dinner with friends or family, there comes a difficult moment. B Try not to eat anything if you feel quite full. C For humans eating food is just for nourishment. D. Eating favorite dessert can make you mentally full. C 9. C 10. A 11. 根据文章第一段“After every great dinner with friends or family, there comes a difficult moment. The pie or cake arrives on the table, magnificent. But having just gorged (狼吞虎咽) on the meal, I can’t enjoy dessert. What’s a candy lover to do? 根据文章第二段中“In fact, an after-dinner treat could contribute to heartburn, upset stomach or just poor sleep when enjoyed too close to bedtime. (事实上,临睡前吃甜点很容易引发胃灼热、胃部不适,甚至会影响睡眠质量)”可知,Ellen Anderson很可能同意睡前吃零食对睡眠有害这一观点。故选C。 【10题详解】 词句猜测题。根据第三段中“Oftentimes people limit the diet of dessert or sweets during the day even if they are craving them, which can lead to them feeling out of control around sweets later in the day. (很多时候,人们白天会限制甜点或甜食的摄入量,即使他们are craving这些甜点或甜食,这可能会导致他们在当天晚些时候对甜食失去控制)”可知,这里是说即使人们非常渴望吃甜点或甜食,也会限制摄入量,所以are craving意思是“非常渴望”,与Desire...greatly“非常渴望”意思相符。故选A。 根据最后一段中“Meals and snacks need to also be satisfying for us to feel we’ve “done” eating. If thoughts or feelings of shame, guilt or judgment come up, that can also take away the enjoyment and satisfaction that you may get from dessert. If you enjoy having something sweet after your meals (even when you’re full), you should know that’s OK. (吃东西不仅仅是为了获取营养,也是为了享受美味。身体饱了并不意味着你就真的不想再吃了。只有当我们感到满足时,才算“吃完”了正餐和零食。如果产生了羞愧、内疚或自责的情绪,那么甜点带来的愉悦和满足感也会大打折扣。如果你喜欢饭后吃点甜食(即使已经吃饱了),那也完全没问题)”可知,吃自己喜欢的甜点可以让我们在心理上感到满足。故选D。 D Americans are walking away from their jobs in record numbers due to various reasons. “Stay interviews are ways for employers to hear directly from employees.” While experts say stay interviews can be a valuable tool to retain top employees there is one big warning: Bosses have to actually follow through on the feedback they get. Rebuild the trust between leaders and workers 【答案】12. B 13. D 14. D 15. 根据第一段“Americans are walking away from their jobs in record numbers due to various reasons. To solve the problem, more companies are turning to “stay interviews”, one-on-one meetings with top performers to give those key people the chance to talk about their current jobs. (由于各种原因,美国人辞职的人数创历史新高。为了解决这个问题,越来越多的公司开始采用“留职面谈”(stay interview),与表现最好的人进行一对一的会面,让这些关键人物有机会谈论他们目前的工作。) ”以及第二段““This has become an extremely popular topic...to try and help retain employees as much as possible,” said Robyn Hopper, a HR knowledge adviser. (“这已经成为一个非常受欢迎的话题……人力资源知识顾问罗宾·霍珀(Robyn Hopper)表示:“我们希望尽可能多地帮助留住员工。”)”可知,雇主采用 “留职面谈” 是为了尽量留住员工,减少人才流失。故选B。 【13题详解】 推理判断题题。根据第二段“Managers who conduct stay interviews are coached to ask workers open-ended questions about what they like most about their jobs, what they dislike and under what events or circumstances they might leave. (“进行留职面谈的经理会接受培训,问员工一些开放式的问题,比如他们最喜欢这份工作的哪些方面,不喜欢哪些方面,以及在什么情况下他们可能会离开。)”可知,在留职面谈中,雇主会问一些关于员工对工作的喜好以及在什么情况下会离职的开放性问题。由此推知。D项“你如何评价工作环境?”可能是雇主会问的问题。故选D。 【14题详解】 细节理解题。根据第五段““People don’t leave companies. People leave managers,” said Dave Carvajal, the CEO of Dave Partners, a tech industry recruiting firm. (“人们不会离开公司。人们会离开经理,”Dave Partners的首席执行官Dave Carvajal说,这是一家科技行业的招聘公司)”可知,Dave Carvajal 认为人们离职是因为对管理者不满意,也就是对领导能力不满意。故选D。 【15题详解】 主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其第一段“Americans are walking away from their jobs in record numbers due to various reasons. To solve the problem, more companies are turning to “stay interviews”, one-on-one meetings with top performers to give those key people the chance to talk about their current jobs. Have you ever got a lot done only to find that you were not any closer to your main goal? All flowers are beautiful—even dandelions.” 注意: 1.所续写短文的词数应为150左右; 2.续写部分分为两段,每段的开头语已为你写好。 Paragraph 1: “Do you mean that every flower has its own beauty?” asked my mother thoughtfully. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Paragraph 2: “But you will be a beautiful narrator,” Mom said. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】Paragraph 1: “Do you mean that every flower has its own beauty?” asked my mother thoughtfully. I nodded without hesitation, as if a second wasted could deprive the dandelions of their life. “The same to you,” she added, her voice soft. “Not everyone can be a rose, and it is also an honour to be a dandelion.” Knowing that my mother had realized my pain, I took off the mask that I had worn for the whole lunch time and poured out my unease heartily. “I want to be the beautiful princess but now I was chosen as a narrator.” She listened to me patiently and patted me on the back tenderly. Paragraph 2: “But you will be a beautiful narrator,” Mom said. She reminded me of how fluently I could deliver my part at home. It was at that time that I understood that maybe I was more suitable for a role back stage like a narrator. From then on, I practiced my lines heart and soul with my mother at lunch time for weeks. And the performance approached ultimately. Standing backstage, nervousness came flooding in me. What encouraged me to overcome it was the inspiration from the beautiful yellow dandelions. The performance that night was eventually a big success. Hearing the thunderous applause, I took pride in my role and firmly believed that even a dandelion had its own beauty. 察觉我的痛苦:realize my pain/understand my disappointment ②.克服困难:overcome the difficulty/settle out the difficulty ③.自豪:take pride in/be proud of 情绪类 ①.耐心地倾听:listen to sb patiently/ listen to sb with great patience ②.紧张:nervousness came flooding in /a sense of nervousness welled up 【点睛】[高分句型1]. Knowing that my mother had realized my pain, I took off the mask that I had worn for the whole lunch time and poured out my unease heartily. (句中使用现在分词作原因状语) [高分句型2]. What encouraged me to overcome it was the inspiration from the beautiful yellow dandelions. (由what引导的主语从句) 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$
