When it comes to medical care, many patients and doctors believe “more is better”. But what they do not realize is that over-treatment — too many scans, too many blood tests, too many procedures (步骤) — may bring harm.
Terrence Power, for example, complained that after his wife learned she had Wegener’s disease, they found it difficult to refuse testing suggested by her doctor. The doctor insisted on office visits every three weeks, even when she was feeling well. He frequently ordered blood tests and X-rays, and repeatedly referred her to specialists for even minor complaints (疾病). Even when tests came back negative, more were ordered and she was hospitalized as prevention when she developed a cold. She had as many as 25 doctor visits during one six-month period. The couple was spending about $30,000 a year for her care.
After several years of physical suffering and near financial ruin from the medical costs, the couple began questioning the treatment after discussing with other patients in online support groups. “It’s a really hard thing to determine when they’ve crossed the line,” Mr. Power said. “You think she’s getting the best care in the world, but after a while you start to wonder: What is the purpose?” Mr. Power then spoke with his own main care doctor who advised him to find a new specialist to oversee (监视) Mrs. Power’s care. Under the new doctor’s care, the regular testing stopped and Mrs. Power’s condition became stable.
Now she sees the doctor only four or five times a year.
28. What do many patients and doctors believe?
A. Less is better. B. More is better.
C. More may not be better. D. The less, the better.
29. How often did the doctor ask Mrs. Power to visit him?
A. Every week. B. Every two weeks.
C. Every three weeks D. Every one month.
30. What does “hospitalized” in the second paragraph mean?
A. Be sent to a hospital. B. Be sent to home.
C Be sent to a church. D. Be sent to a hotel.
31. When did the couple begin questioning the treatment?
A. After discussing with their family members.
B. After knowing about other patients treatment.
C. After having many doctor visits during one six-month period.
D. After discussing with other patients in online support groups.

In 2050, London’s climate will feel more like Barcelona’s, according to a new climate change study.
If you think people in London will have more sunshine, cheaper fruits and no need to bring an umbrella at any time, think again. London could be facing severe drought, as Barcelona did in 2008, when it nearly ran out of drinking water.
Hundreds of other major cities worldwide could be facing droughts, flooding, storms, and other climate catastrophes, said the study conducted by the Crowther Lab at ETH Zurich University.
The study predicted the future climate conditions of 520 major cities worldwide, and paired those predictions with the conditions of cities today. By 2050, Seattle will feel like San Francisco, and New York will feel like Virginia Beach, according to the report.
An estimated 77% of cities around the world will see their climate conditions dramatically change, indicating “the global scale of this climate change threat and associated risks for human health,” the study warned.
Regions with northern latitudes, including most of Europe, will face the most dramatic temperature changes. In London, for example, the warmest month will rise by 5.9°C, leading to a mean annual temperature rise of 2.1℃.
However, the danger is different in tropical regions — temperatures there won’t rise by much, but the rains are expected to change significantly. This year, the monsoon(季风) rains that bring relief each year came weeks late in some places in India, extending nationwide droughts and leaving people struggling for drinking water. Then when the monsoon rains do arrive, they come so fast and so heavy that cities flood, leaving dozens dead. What’s worse, according to the study, of the 22% of cities that are facing unknown, currently non- existent climate conditions, 64% are in the tropics.
32. According to the new study, what will the situation be like in London in 2050?
A. The life cost will be lower.
B. People will get sunburned easily.
C. Serious water shortage will strike London.
D. There is no need to bring an umbrella.
33. What does the underlined word “catastrophes” mean in Paragraph 3?
A. Disasters. B. Conditions.
C. Predictions. D. Changes.
34. Why does the author mention the situation in India?
A. To prove temperatures are changing greatly.
B. To compare it with the situation in other cities.
C. To show the differences between different regions.
D. To explain what’s happening in tropical regions.
35. Where does the text probably come from?
A. A geography textbook. B. A travel guide.
C. A study report. D. A science fiction.

In 1994 an 8.2 earthquake hit America, killing over 30,000 people in less than four minutes. As soon as the earthquake was over, a father left his wife safely at home and rushed to the school where his son was supposed to be, only to discover that the building was as flat as a pancake.
After the unforgettably initial shock, he remembered the promise he had made to his son: “No matter what happens, I`ll always be there for you!” And tears began to fill his eyes. As he looked at the pile of ruins that once was the school, it looked hopeless, but he kept remembering his promise to his son.
He began to draw his attention towards where he walked his son to class at school each morning. Remembering his son’s classroom would be in the back right corner of the building, he rushed there and started digging through the ruins.
As he was digging, other helpless parents arrived, with a broken heart, shouting: “My son!” “My daughter!” Other well meaning parents tried to pull him off what was left of the school, saying: “It’s too late! They’re all dead! You can’t help! Go home! Come on, face reality, there’s nothing you can do!”
To each parent he responded with one line: “Are you going to help me now?” And then he continued to dig for his son, stone by stone. The firefighters showed up and tried to pull him off the school’s ruins, saying, “Fires are breaking out, explosions are happening everywhere. You’re in danger. We’ll take care of it. Go home.” However, the father asked, “Are you going to help me now?” The police came and said, “You’re anxious and it’s over. You’re endangering others. Go home. We’ll handle it!” Again, he replied, “Are you going to help me now?” No one helped.
Paragraph 1:
The father went on alone because he needed to know for himself: “Is my boy alive or is he dead?”

Paragraph 2:
Everyone began to help him pull the kids out of the ruins.

C. Be sent to a church. D. Be sent to a hotel.
31. When did the couple begin questioning the treatment?
A. After discussing with their family members.
B. After knowing about other patients treatment.
C. After having many doctor visits during one six-month period.
D. After discussing with other patients in online support groups.
B 29. C 30. A 31. D
根据文章第一段“When it comes to medical care, many patients and doctors believe “more is better”.(当谈到医疗保健时,许多病人和医生都认为“越多医疗护理越好”)”可知,许多病人和医生认为“越多医疗护理越好”。故选B。

D To explain what’s happening in tropical regions.
35. Where does the text probably come from?
A. A geography textbook. B. A travel guide.
C. A study report. D. A science fiction.
C 33. A 34. D 35. C
根据第二段“London could be facing severe drought, as Barcelona did in 2008, when it nearly ran out of drinking water.”(伦敦可能会面临严重的干旱,就像2008年的巴塞罗那一样,当时它几乎耗尽了饮用水)可知,伦敦在2050年可能会面临严重的水资源短缺。
根据第三段“Hundreds of other major cities worldwide could be facing droughts, flooding, storms, and other climate catastrophes”(全球数百个其他主要城市可能面临干旱、洪水、风暴和其他气候catastrophes)可知,与干旱、洪水、风暴相对应的是气候灾难。 故选A项。
根据第七段“This year, the monsoon( 季风 ) rains that bring relief each year came weeks late in some places in India, extending nationwide droughts and leaving people struggling for drinking water. Then when the monsoon rains do arrive, they come so fast and so heavy that cities flood, leaving dozens dead. What’s worse, according to the study, of the 22% of cities that are facing unknown, currently non- existent climate conditions, 64% are in the tropics.”(今年,在印度的一些地方,每年都会带来缓解的季风性降雨晚了几周,扩大了全国范围的干旱,使人们难以获得饮用水。
通读全文以及根据第三段“Hundreds of other major cities worldwide could be facing droughts, flooding, storms, and other climate catastrophes, said the study conducted by the Crowther Lab at ETH Zurich University.”(苏黎世联邦理工大学克劳瑟实验室进行的这项研究称,全球数百个其他主要城市可能面临干旱、洪水、风暴和其他气候灾难)可知,短文介绍的关于自然灾害的研究。

D 37. E 38. A 39. C 40. B
根据上文“Put a smoke alarm (烟雾警报器) in the house. Smoke from a fire causes the alarm to go off. The alarm makes a loud sound.(在房子里装个烟雾报警器。火灾产生的烟雾会使警铃响。闹钟发出很大的声音)”可知,本句说的应该是烟雾警报器的作用。如果房间内有烟雾的话,警报器就会发出声音,这种声音能够警示屋内的人要马上离开房间,故D选项“声音告诉所有人马上离开房子”符合语境,故选D。
【37题详解】
根据上文“Make escape plans. We should know all the ways out of the house.(制定逃生计划。我们应该知道所有出房子的路)”可知,上文提到了制定逃生计划,可知本句是在说明其作用,E选项中the plan对应上文escape plans。故E选项“如果发生火灾,每个人都按照计划逃生”符合语境,故选E。
【38题详解】
根据后文“We do fire practice because we teach children about fire safety.(我们做消防练习是因为我们教孩子们防火安全知识)”可知,空处内容应和消防演练有关,故A选项“为火灾做练习”符合语境,故选A。
根据空前的句子“Stay close to the floor!(离地板近一点!)”
Fall to the floor. Then roll!(扑倒!倒在地板上。然后滚!)”可知,本句应继续说明如何通过滚动来灭火。故B选项“在地上不断地翻滚,火就会熄灭”符合语境,故选B。

Staying Safe During Earthquakes
Hello everyone, today I want to talk about earthquakes. As we’ve seen in recent news, earthquakes can happen unexpectedly and cause great damage. So it’s vital to know how to stay safe when it happens.
Firstly staying calm is key to making wise decisions during an earthquake. And then, you should find some safe places to stay in and don’t run in a hurry. If you are in the room, you are supposed to hide yourself under something hard, such as a desk, cover your head, and never take a lift to go downstairs. If you are in the open air, find an open place and never get close to cars or water. Furthermore, we should help each other when we are in trouble.
No matter how strong the earthquake is, as long as we have the belief to defeat it and never give up, we can overcome any difficulty in front of us. Thank you!

Paragraph 1:
The father went on alone because he needed to know for himself: “Is my boy alive or is he dead?” He dug for eight hours...12 hours...24 hours...36 hours...Then, in the 38th hour, he pulled back a large stone and heard his son’s voice. After screaming his son’s name, “ARMAND!” he heard back, “Dad?! It’s me, Dad!” The faint but familiar voice brought tears of relief to his eyes. “What’s going on in there? How is it?” the father asked anxiously, digging more forcefully with his bare hands. “I’m fine. There are 13 other kids down here, Dad,” Daniel replied. “We’re scared, hungry, and thirsty. When the building collapsed, it made a triangle and saved us.” The father realized that this was a tricky situation. He couldn’t risk causing another collapse down there. Fortunately, the firefighters were just nearby. The father shouted to the fire chief and signalled to them to come over.
Paragraph 2:
Everyone began to help him pull the kids out of the ruins. Then, the father helped the firefighters cautiously remove the rocks and pulled out the kids one by one. When everyone was safe and sound, Daniel threw himself into his father’s arms: “You did it, Dad! No matter what, I know you’ll be there for me!”
