Ever since my childhood, I have been hearing people talking about Rome. Last month, I finally had the chance to visit it. I spent three busy days there, seeing tourist attractions and walking down streets lit by Christmas decorations. There are so many things I love about the city.
Rome is one of the most ancient cities in the world and is full of wonderful relics from its long past. These include the vast Coliseum (竞技场) where gladiators used to fight each other until death and hunt animals coming from another country. The ruins of buildings and temples are fascinating: you can’t quite believe how old they are.
I studied the masterpieces of the Renaissance at university and was very excited to see them in real life. I walked around the museum in the Vatican and saw plenty of famous sculptures. The best part of the visit was, without doubt, the Sistine Chapel ceiling, painted in the early 16th century by Michelangelo. It was so breathtaking that I couldn’t tear my eyes away from it.
In Rome, there is a lot of food on offer for tourists but some of it isn’t of very good quality. I made an effort to find reliable restaurants to taste the popular meals of the region, like pasta with tomato, onion and bacon. I also loved eating ice cream and hot chocolate under the Christmas lights.
Rome has not only lots of luxury boutiques (精品店) but also plenty of shops that are more in my price range! It was a perfect opportunity to go and buy presents for my family and friends. There was also a Christmas market, where I bought a sparkly decoration for the tree.
4 What does the underlined word “gladiators” mean in the second paragraph?
A. Fighters. B. Butchers. C. Soldiers. D. Athletes.
5. Why did the author think the ruins of buildings and temples fascinating?
A. They represent Rome’s religion. B. They are well decorated on Christmas.
C. They are relics with a long history. D. They include the famous vast Coliseum.
6. What should you be careful in choosing while visiting Rome?
A. The attractions. B. The luxury shops. C. The hotels. D. The food.
7. Where is the text probably taken from?
A. A travel diary. B. A realistic novel. C. A news report. D. A science fiction.
A 5. C 6. D 7. A

根据第二段中“The ruins of buildings and temples are fascinating: you can’t quite believe how old they are.(建筑和寺庙的废墟令人着迷:你简直不敢相信它们有多古老)”可知,作者认为这些建筑物历史悠久,极具吸引力。
根据第四段中“In Rome, there is a lot of food on offer for tourists but some of it isn’t of very good quality.(在罗马,有很多食物提供给游客,但有些食物的质量不是很好)”可知,在罗马要小心选择食物。
根据第一段“Ever since my childhood, I have been hearing people talking about Rome. Last month, I finally had the chance to visit it. Why can friendships be hard? Because often people aren't as honest and open as they should be. Sometimes, people end up getting hurt.
Most problems with friendships come up because people are just too selfish to care about the things that their friends need. They care about their own needs much more, which makes it hard for friendships to work. However, being selfish is part of human nature. A person is put together in order to take care of himself and his own needs, not necessarily those needs of other people. Even though being selfish is something that all humans are born with, it is something that everyone should guard against.
The best thing to remember when you are a friend to anyone is that you need to treat your friend the same way as you'd like to be treated. This is wonderful advice for a friendship, because it is really the only way to make sure that you are giving your friend everything you would want to be given in a friendship. Whenever you have a question about how you should treat a friend, it is easy to find an answer simply by asking yourself what you would like your friend to do for you, if he or she is in your shoes.
Even if you're always thinking about how you'd like to be treated, and your friends are too, there are issues that come up from time to time in each friendship, and it is important to understand how to deal with these issues so that you can build stronger and healthier friendships. Issues like friends getting boyfriends or girlfriends and not spending enough time with their friends, or even friends finding new friends and leaving old friends behind are issues that will probably come up with one or more of your friendships. It is important to know how to deal with these issues so that you can keep your friends and make new ones. No one wants to have a broken friendship.
8. Why may problems with friendships appear?
A. One is selfish. B. One is alone.
C. One is too anxious. D. One is too busy.
9. What's the first and most important thing to be other people's friend?
A. Not to hurt your friends' feelings.
B. To give your friends whatever you have.
C. To treat your friends as fairly as possible.
D. Not to think of your own needs any more.
10. What is the text mainly about?
A. The Meaning of Friendships
B. The Importance of Friendships
C. The Advantages of Friendships
D. The Problems with Friendships
11. What may follow the last paragraph of the text?
A. How to make many friends.
B. How to keep friends happy.
C. How to treat friends correctly.
D. How to solve friendship issues.
A 9. C 10. D 11. D
根据第二段第一句“Most problems with friendships come up because people are just too selfish to care about the things that their friends need(大多数友谊问题的出现是因为人们太自私了,不关心他们朋友需要的东西)”可知,朋友之间出现的大多数问题是由于人们太自私。故选A。
根据第三段第一句“The best thing to remember when you are a friend to anyone is that you need to treat your friend the same way as you'd like to be treated(当你成为任何人的朋友时,最好记住的是,你需要以你希望别人对待你的方式来对待你的朋友)”可知,作者认为要成为别人的朋友,最重要的一件事就是 “尽可能公平地对待你的朋友”。
通读全文,尤其是第二段的“Most problems with friendships come up because people are just too selfish to care about the things that their friends need(大多数友谊问题的出现是因为人们太自私了,不关心他们朋友需要的东西)”可知,全文主要是围绕朋友之间出现的问题进行谈论的。
根据文章最后两句话“It is important to know how to deal with these issues so that you can keep your friends and make new ones. No one wants to have a broken friendship(知道如何处理这些问题是很重要的,这样你就可以保持你的朋友和结交新的朋友。没有人想要一段破裂的友谊)”可知,作者认为为了能保持友谊和不断交到新的朋友,了解如何处理朋友之间的问题是很重要的,那么接下来要谈到的应该是如何处理朋友之间的问题。故选D。

To the human ears a field of flowers is silent, except the noise of birds and insects. To certain animal ears, however, a field of flowers is full of conversation. Now, scientists have discovered that plants actually make noise as a way of communicating. In other words, they talk!
It has long been known that plants communicate when they are stressed. You need only watch a houseplant to realize that a plant lowers its head when it needs water, or turns yellow when it has been watered too much. Some plants also send out a bad smell when stressed to try and stop insects from taking advantage of their stressed state and eating them up.
Now, a new study that was published in Cell and conducted by researchers at Tel Aviv University, shows that not only do plants express themselves in the above ways when stressed, they also make sounds, like talking.
According to NoCamels, plants send out sounds at frequencies (频率) between 40 to 80 kilohertz — out of the range (范围) of human ears, but within the range of some animals. “Bats (蝙蝠) make sounds in these ranges all the time, and mice, dogs and cats can partly hear within it,” Dr. Lilach Hadany, one of the authors of the study, told NoCamels.
What is surprising about Hadany’s study is that the researchers have managed to understand and group the sounds that plants make for the first time. Plants that are not stressed make about one noise per hour, but plants that are stressed, thirsty, or injured make many hundreds of sounds per hour; and each of these sounds seems to show the certain type of stress the plant is under.
This type of information could be key for agriculture (农业). Knowing what sounds their plants are making will help farmers determine whether their plants are in danger or disease and allow them to make the necessary changes to allow their plants to grow well.
12. Why do some plants send out a bad smell?
A. To show they hate birds. B. To say they are in need of water.
C. To protect themselves from danger. D. To tell people to stop watering them.
13. Which of the following can hear plants most clearly?
A. Humans. B. Cats. C. Dogs. D. Bats.
14. What does the last paragraph focus on?
A. The big problems farmers have been facing.
B. The possible application of the new study.
C. The ways for farmers to learn plants’ languages.
D. The points needed to be improved for the study.
15. What is the best title for the text?
A. Plants Change Their Looks to Ask for Help
B. Necessary Changes Are Made to Agriculture
C. Plants Can Make Sounds to Communicate
D. A Field of Plants Is Silent to the Human Ears
C 13. D 14. B 15. C

根据第二段中“Some plants also send out a bad smell when stressed to try and stop insects from taking advantage of their stressed state and eating them up. (一些植物在受到压力时也会发出难闻的气味,试图阻止昆虫利用它们的压力状态吃掉它们。)”可知,一些植物发出难闻的气味是为了不被吃掉,即自我保护。故选C。
【13题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段“According to NoCamels, plants send out sounds at frequencies (频率) between 40 to 80 kilohertz—out of the range (范围) of human ears, but within the range of some animals. “Bats (蝙蝠) make sounds in these ranges all the time, and mice, dogs and cats can partly hear within it,” Dr. Lilach Hadany, one of the authors of the study, told NoCamels. (根据NoCamels的说法,植物发出的声音频率在40到80千赫兹之间,超出了人耳的听觉范围,但在一些动物的听觉范围内。“蝙蝠一直在这个范围内发出声音,老鼠、狗和猫都能在这个范围内听到部分声音,”该研究的作者之一利拉克·哈达尼博士告诉NoCamels。)”可知,蝙蝠能够最清楚地听到植物的声音。故选D。
【14题详解】
主旨大意题。根据最后一段中“This type of information could be key for agriculture (农业). Knowing what sounds their plants are making will help farmers determine whether their plants are in danger or disease and allow them to make the necessary changes to allow their plants to grow well. (这类信息可能对农业至关重要。了解他们的植物发出的声音将帮助农民确定他们的植物是否处于危险或疾病之中,并使他们能够做出必要的改变,使他们的植物生长得更好。)”可知,本段聚焦于该项新研究的可能的应用。故选B。
【15题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是第一段中“Now, scientists have discovered that plants actually make noise as a way of communicating. In other words, they talk! (现在,科学家们已经发现植物发出声音实际上是一种交流的方式。换句话说,他们会说话!)”可知,本文主要介绍了项新的研究发现——植物可以发声。故选C。

Tell kids the important messages
Talk to kids about the dangers they could face online, including never sharing their photos online and knowing many online profiles are not true. ___19___. 【
根据空前的“It’s a familiar struggle in many households: trying to pry kids’ phones away before bedtime.(很多家庭都有这样的纠结:在睡觉前把孩子的手机拿走)”可知,很多家庭都在斗争,想要在睡觉前拿走孩子的手机,结合空后的“A recent new study of children in New Zealand found that being on a phone once in bed can be bad for a child’s sleep and recommended some tips on how to win the fight with kids over phone use.(新西兰最近一项针对儿童的新研究发现,在床上玩手机可能对孩子的睡眠有害,并就如何在孩子使用手机的问题上取胜提出了一些建议)”可知,此空处应是对空前内容的进一步阐述,并引出下文研究,F选项“But for parents, it can be nearly impossible to win this battle(但对于父母来说,赢得这场战斗几乎是不可能的)”讲述的内容承接了空前的内容,其中“this battle”与上文提到的“struggle”相呼应,且引出下文的研究结果,即使用手机对孩子的危害,符合语境。故选F项。
根据空前的“Not getting enough sleep is surely harmful to children.(睡眠不足肯定对孩子有害)”可知,睡眠不足对孩子有害,结合空后的“Lack of sleep is also related to having problems learning, paying attention and behaving.(睡眠不足还与学习、注意力和行为方面的问题有关)”可知,睡眠不足还会影响孩子的学习、注意力和行为,由此可知,此空讲述的内容应与睡眠不足造成的问题相关,其中的also为解题的关键信息,G选项“It increases a child’s risk of accidents, injuries and health problems(它增加了孩子发生事故、受伤和健康问题的风险)”中的it指代的为空前的“Not getting enough sleep”,具体说明了睡眠不足对孩子健康的负面影响,与空后的内容吻合。故选G项。
分析语篇,此处应为本段的主题句,根据空后的“First, parents might consider taking kids’ phones away before bed and returning them in the morning. In order not to affect kids’ education, extracurricular activities and face-to-face communication, parents also need to set the rule that kids should leave their phones at home when they go to school and that their phones should be put away while they are doing their homework or dining.(首先,父母可以考虑睡前把孩子的手机拿走,早上再还给他们。
根据空前的“Talk to kids about the dangers they could face online, including never sharing their photos online and knowing many online profiles are not true.(和孩子们谈谈他们在网上可能面临的危险,包括永远不要在网上分享他们的照片,要知道很多网上的资料都是假的)”可知,要告诉孩子在网上可能面临的危险,结合空后的“One way to do that is to search suitable contents together on social apps. Besides, convey to kids that if they get into trouble online, they can turn to their parents for help.(一种方法是在社交应用上一起搜索合适的内容。此外,向孩子们传达,如果他们在网上遇到麻烦,他们可以向父母求助)”可知,此处讲述的是如何解决网上遇到的麻烦,由此可知推断,此空讲述的内容应是承上启下的作用,C选项“It is suggested to help kids find healthy communities online(建议帮助孩子们在网上找到健康的社区)”讲述的内容承接上文,且就网上出现的问题提出建议,引出下文,符合语境。故选C项。
【20题详解】
分析语篇可知,此处应是对全文的内容进行总结,根据首段中的“A recent new study of children in New Zealand found that being on a phone once in bed can be bad for a child’s sleep and recommended some tips on how to win the fight with kids over phone use.(新西兰最近一项针对儿童的新研究发现,在床上玩手机可能对孩子的睡眠有害,并就如何在孩子使用手机的问题上取胜提出了一些建议)”以及下文中介绍的如何赢得与孩子使用手机的斗争的建议可知,该研究应是既帮助到了家长解决了与孩子的斗争问题,也减少了孩子使用手机的危害,所以应是对孩子和家长都有好处,E选项“Simply put, this study helps both the kids and their parents(简单地说,这项研究对孩子和他们的父母都有帮助)”讲述的内容对全文内容做出总结,符合语境。故选E项。

I was a freshman in high school, eager to start a new chapter in my life. Little did I knew that my journey would be marked by an unexpected friendship. My desk mate, Tom, was a stutterer (结巴). Sometimes, it made me really uncomfortable.
The first day of school was exciting. I found my seat and settled in, only to be greeted by a nervous stutter from my deskmate. “H-Hello, I’m T-Tom,” he said. I tried to be polite. But inside, I felt embarrassed (尴尬). I was worried about how his stuttering would affect me, especially during class discussions. I avoided him as much as possible, not wanting to be associated with the awkwardness he seemed to bring.
One day, during a particularly challenging math class, I was struggling to understand a complex problem. The teacher, Mrs. Lee, noticed my confusion and asked if I needed help. Before I could answer, Tom spoke up. “I-I-I-I can help,” he offered, his stutter became mere noticeable under the pressure. To my surprise, he explained the problem clearly, and I began to see him in a new light. His intelligence and kindness shone through his stutter, and I felt guilty (内疚的) for my previous behavior.
As the weeks went by, I started to pay more attention to Tom. My friends noticed the change and asked about it. I shared my initial dislike and later admiration for Tom. They encouraged me to give him a chance, reminding me that everyone has their struggles. My parents, too, noticed my shift in attitude and discussed the importance of empathy and understanding. They told me about the times they faced difficulties, showing me that everyone has strengths beyond what people might see as weaknesses.
The turning point in our relationship came during the school’s annual talent show. Tom, despite his fear of public speaking, decided to take part in it.

After the talent show, Tom and I became close friends.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
He chose to recite a poem he had written. As he stepped onto the stage, I could see his hands shaking and his face turning red. But he took a deep breath and began. His stutter was still there, but his voice was filled with so much emotion and determination. The audience was silent, listening intently. When he finished, the room erupted in thunderous applause. I was on my feet, clapping the loudest, tears welling up in my eyes.
After the talent show, Tom and I became close friends. I no longer cared about his stutter but focused on the wonderful person he was inside. We studied together, shared our dreams and fears. I learned that true friendship isn’t about surface appearances or speech, but about accepting and supporting each other unconditionally. Through Tom, I grew to be a more understanding and compassionate person. I realized that everyone has their battles to fight and that kindness and acceptance can make a world of difference in someone’s life.

4. What does the underlined word “gladiators” mean in the second paragraph?
A. Fighters. B. Butchers. C. Soldiers. D. Athletes.
5. Why did the author think the ruins of buildings and temples fascinating?
A. They represent Rome’s religion. B. They are well decorated on Christmas.
C They are relics with a long history. D. They include the famous vast Coliseum.
6. What should you be careful in choosing while visiting Rome?
A The attractions. B. The luxury shops. C. The hotels. D. The food.
7. Where is the text probably taken from?
A. A travel diary. B. A realistic novel. C. A news report. D. A science fiction.
C

To the human ears, a field of flowers is silent, except the noise of birds and insects.

I was a freshman in high school eager to start a new chapter in my life.
