Bassanio smiled. “My friend Antonio will help me. If I do not pay you in three months, he will do it for me.”
Now it was Shylock’s turn to smile. Perhaps this would be a chance for him to hurt his enemy in some way. “I understand that Antonio has some ships in different parts of the world,” he said, “and that when they come back, he will have plenty of money. However, there are many risks in his business. There are pirates (海盗), and there are storms, and everything could be lost. But I am not worried about him because I know that Antonio is a good man. Thirty thousand dollars is a lot of money, but I believe he will help you.”

Passage9(2025·安徽阜阳·一模)
As a mother, I often think of how my words and actions might influence my children. Something little might just become a special memory for them.
Last year, when my son turned four, we had a special day. In the morning, we drove to the train station and bought two tickets. We took two window seats and watched houses, bikes and cars pass by. After getting off the train, we walked to a restaurant and had a good meal. The cabbages were fresh and the bread was soft, but the potatoes were our favorite.
Then, we walked around the city center. We visited a toy shop and ended up buying a long blue train. After all, it was the little man’s birthday. We also enjoyed some hot chocolate at a coffee shop. Finally, we made our way back to the train station and returned home. My son must have enjoyed himself that day. He looked at me with thirsty eyes and asked, “Mama, when can we have a special day again?”
Sometimes, we go to a park. Sometimes, we try out a new restaurant. We don’t do this very often, or it won’t end up being special. But we don’t do it too seldom, neither, or we might forget how much we both love having them — those special days.

But then, Niki had forgotten her notebook in the classroom by accident, and Vanessa had returned it to her. Then the two girls started to talk, and they got to know each other. Now Vanessa knew that Niki wasn’t a snob, but she still didn’t understand why Niki wouldn’t talk to anyone.
One day, Niki explained herself, “I don’t really know anyone here except you, and I’m kind of shy. I know everybody thinks I’m a snob, but I’m not. I just don’t know what to say to people.”
Vanessa had an idea for helping Niki. “If my other friends get to know you,” she told Niki, “they’ll like you, too. So why don’t you sit with my friends and me at lunch tomorrow? Passage15(2025·河南·模拟预测)
I find it humorous sometimes that even common things can have an effect on us.
My wife, daughter, and I moved into our home nine years ago and we spent a lot of time and energy in the yard to make it what it looks like today. We live on a corner, higher than street level. The yard is surrounded by a beautiful rock wall. But the rocks in the front of the house appear to be just thrown up onto the dirt as if someone were in a hurry to finish.
We did the best to work with what we had and called this area our ‘rock garden’. Whenever we planted flowers or plants, Denise or I would stick them out to bring some color to the area.
Last summer, when I cleared grass in the rock garden, I found a tiny little plant that I could not immediately identify. I knew I didn’t plant it and Denise said that she didn’t, either. We decided to let it continue growing until we could tell what it was.
Weeks passed and as I made my way back to the mystery plant, it appeared to be a sunflower. I decided to baby it along and clear grass around it. As I pulled rocks from the area to get to the grass, I noticed something unusual. The sunflower actually had begun under a big rock and grown under and around it to reach the sun.
That’s when I realized that if a tiny little sunflower didn’t let a big rock stand in its way of developing, we too have the ability of doing the same thing. We need to believe in ourselves knowing we have the abilities to achieving our desires. Like the sunflower, it knew it had the ability to overcome its difficulty because it was sure it would succeed.

“A pink coat!” Sarah cried. “I want the pink coat.”
“That coat is smaller than the other ones,” Papa said.
Sarah spoke up, “I’m small too. Papa, please let me try it on. Mama? Please?”
“It wouldn’t hurt to let her try it on,” Mama said.
Without a word, the shopkeeper took the coat from the shelf and held it for Sarah.
“Ohhh!” Sarah said. The coat was smooth and shiny inside like her sister Sylvia’s blouses. “Ahhh!”
Sarah stood very straight and looked in the mirror. She looked for a very long time. In the pink coat she looked like a spring flower.
“Sarah!” Mama said.
Sarah looked up. Mama was standing behind her. She was holding the brown coat.
“I’m afraid the pink coat will only fit one year,” Mama said, taking a step closer.
“And there’s no one to pass it on to,” said Papa.
And the shopkeeper said, “It’s wise to save money.”
Sarah backed away. No one was going to put her into a raincoat again. She wanted to be a flower.
“Sarah!” It was Papa. He came over to her. “You’re old enough to know that you can’t always have your own way,” he said seriously.

Papa looked from the brown coat to the pink coat. “The cows will give milk soon enough,” he said. “And how can we let Sarah wear a brown coat when she looks like a flower in this one?”

Passage17(2025·广东·模拟预测)
Have you ever used a needle (针) and thread (线) to sew (缝纫)? What did you think of it?
When I was a little boy, my mom, grandmother and I drove to my grandmother’s sister’s house in the next town. It was a warm summer afternoon, so I went outside to play in the yard when they all sat around the kitchen table talking.
After an hour of playing by myself, I got bored and walked inside to see what they were doing. On the kitchen table was a large homemade quilt that was still being sewn together. Pieces of colorful cloth were everywhere. I sat in a chair and watched as my great-aunt sewed a little piece of cloth onto the quilt. I looked over at the quilt and saw a piece of thread sticking out. Without thinking, I reached over to pull it.
“No!” It was my grandmother’s voice. I jumped back. That was the first time I can ever remember her yelling at me. Seeing the scared look on my face, she smiled and showed me why she had yelled. That single piece of thread weaved (迂回穿行) in and out of the different pieces of cloth.
It made its way from one end of the quilt to the other. If I had pulled it, I would have pulled the quilt apart and ruined (毁掉) hours of work.
As I look back on that moment today, I can see that each of our lives is a lot like that thread in the quilt. We are each a single piece of thread, but the other threads around us help hold everything together. That’s our purpose — to help and support the people around us.

I was 15 months old, a happy and carefree kid, until the day I fell. It was a bad fall. I landed on a piece of glass that cut my eye badly. From then on, my injured, sightless, cloudy gray eye lived on with me.
Sometimes people asked me embarrassing (使人难堪的) questions. When kids played games, I was the “monster”. I grew up imagining that everyone looked down on me.
Yet my mum would say to me, “Hold your head up high and face the world.” I began to rely on that saying.

When things got really bad, I would cry to my mum and she would look at me with loving eyes and say, “Hold your head up high and face the world. Early on the morning of September 19, 1910, Hiller’s wife noticed that the light which they usually left on was off. Hiller and the stranger started to fight, but the stranger had a gun. He shot Hiller twice and ran away.
Hiller’s wife ran to Hiller when she heard the gunshots but found him dead. So she called the police. Soon after, the police caught Thomas Jennings, not far from the Hillers’ house.
The only problem was no one saw the criminal. However, the police had started using fingerprinting at that time. When Antonio told Bassanio to go to town and borrow money, Bassanio visited Shylock. He asked Shylock to lend him thirty thousand dollars and said he would pay it back in three months.
“How do I know you can pay it back?” asked Shylock.
Shylock went to visit Antonio. When he saw Antonio, he remembered how much he hated him. However, he did not show his hatred (仇恨). He tried to be friendly.
“It is thirty thousand dollars for three months, isn’t it?” he asked.
Antonio and Bassanio agreed.
“What interest (利息) will you pay?” he asked.
After that, Antonio and Shylock were arguing (争论) about interest. Antonio called Shylock some bad names.
“He looks like a good apple,” he told Bassanio, “but inside he is rotten.”
Bassanio was worried. Perhaps Shylock would not lend him the money, so he spoke to Antonio. Antonio was sorry.
“Would you still lend us the money?” Antonio asked Shylock.
“Come with me to the judge,” said Shylock, “so that he can write the contract (契约). I will lend you thirty thousand dollars for three months. You will pay no interest. Just for fun, however, let’s agree that if you do not pay me on time, you will give me one pound of your flesh (肉) from wherever I choose to take it!”

As I pulled rocks from the area to get to the grass, I noticed something unusual. The sunflower actually had begun under a big rock and grown under and around it to reach the sun.

One of her students, Jiang Yan, said Liu would show over 100 times how to speak just one word. She also taught the students how to wash their face and clothes, and clip their nails (剪指甲).

Passage20(2025·江苏连云港·模拟预测)
Hold your head up high
I was 15 months old, a happy and carefree kid, until the day I fell. It was a bad fall. I landed on a piece of glass that cut my eye badly. From then on, my injured, sightless, cloudy gray eye lived on with me.
Sometimes people asked me embarrassing (使人难堪的) questions. When kids played games, I was the “monster”. I grew up imagining that everyone looked down on me.
Yet my mum would say to me, “Hold your head up high and face the world.” I began to rely on that saying.
As a child, I thought Mum meant, “Be careful or you will fall down or bump into something because you are not looking.” As a teenager, I usually looked down to hide my shame. But I found that when I held my head up high, people liked me.
In high school I even became the class president, but on the inside I still felt like a monster. All I really wanted was to look like everyone else. When things got really bad, I would cry to my mum and she would look at me with loving eyes and say, “Hold your head up high and face the world. Let them see the beauty that is inside instead of your appearance.”
My mum’s love was the spark that gave me confidence. I had faced hardships (艰难), and learned not only to appreciate myself but to have deep compassion (同情) for others.
