Shelby, the star of “A Dog’s Way Home,” has a hard-luck tale that could top them all. Before her big break, she was living in a landfill, rooting through garbage for her next meal. Shelby’s big break came in April 2017, when animal-control officer Megan Buhler was driving in Cheatham County. Tennessee. Out on an unrelated call, Buhler spotted and approached what she recalled was a noticeably scared puppy emerging from the dump. “I knelt down and just said, ‘Oh, come here, baby,’” said Buhler. “She was so scared, but she came right up to me, and I was able to put her in my truck.” The pair headed to the county animal shelter, where the staff began calling the new resident Baby Girl. Buhler and others didn’t know that 3,200 kilometers away, Hollywood was looking for a dog to play Bella in a film written by Cathryn Michon. The find-a-Bella job went to freelance trainer Teresa Ann Miler. Her mission was to search shelters nationwide for a dog that could play Bella. One day, Miller spotted Baby Girl’s adoption photo. “Honestly, it was a really good picture, and she was flat-out smiling,” Miller said. Then she met Baby Girl, and assessed her on personality and the ability to respond to simple commands. After assessment, she adopted Baby Girl from the shelter, renamed her Shelby and took her to California for training. Miller and Shelby trained for just over three months before filming began. Then they were together each day on the set. Most of the film’s reviews have praised Shelby’s performance. Variety made the comments “an amazing dog, perfect performance!” Shelby has come a long way from the dump. But Buhler said she saw Shelby recently had needed only a second to compare the movie star with the dog she found from piles of trash. “She’s exactly the same,” Buhler said. 24. Why does the author mention an actor’s struggle before a career breakthrough at the very beginning? A. To make a sharp contrast between an actor’s struggle and a dog’s struggle. B. To introduce a dog’s similar but even more striking experiences. C. To attract reader’s attention by giving dramatic examples. D. To clearly point out the main idea of the passage. 25 What finally helped Baby Girl get the big role in the film? A. Her adoption picture. B. Her flat-out smiling. C. her personality and ability. D. Her miserable experiences. 26. By saying “She is exactly the same” in the last paragraph, Buhler probably means _______. A. the dog returned to the piles of trash where she found it B. it took quite a lot of trouble for the dog to change her own fate. C. she’s really excited to see the dog she helped live such a happy life D. the dramatic change of the dog’s life hasn’t changed her inner quality 27. What do you think may serve as the best title of the passage? A. The Success of “A Dog’s Way Home” B. From a Landfill Puppy to a Movie Star C. The Trainer and Her Star Dog D. Shelby’s Hard-luck Story C Personality used to be a one-per-customer deal: like it or not, you were who you were, and lying to a pen pal was about the closest you could get to have a different ego. That was then. With the appearance of MySpace, Facebook, and other social networking sites, a second, carefully crafted identity is now available to anyone with an Internet connection. And that has psychologists wonder: just how well do these online personalities match the person sitting at the keyboard? The answer, it turns out, is pretty well. In a recent study of 133 undergraduates with Facebook profiles, University of Texas psychologist Samuel D. Gosling measured the correlation between personality tests online and off, and found — contrary to the assumption that social networking sites can’t capture one’s features—that the students represented themselves quite faithfully. Gosling surveyed the group on a standard five-point personality test, which measures extroversion (外向性), agreeableness, sense of responsibility, emotional stability, and openness to new experiences. Then he rated the same subjects based only on their Facebook profiles, which usually included photos and lists of interests, from academic majors to favorite books and movies. Gosling found a correlation between assessments in four of the five categories, with emotional stability as the only one showing no significant results across personal and online assessments.(Gosling says he was not surprised at the latter, since emotional stability is something that people are good at hiding across most media.)While extroversion showed the highest correlation, the study suggests that “openness to new experience” is perhaps better conveyed online than in person. “Facebook users don’t tend to put a lot of personal information on their pages, ” Gosling says, so someone who posted touching personal stories, for example, might come off as oversharing without intending to. In short, says Gosling, Facebook users aren’t generally using the site as an image buffer, a resume enhancer, or a separate self. “They just use it as a medium for social life.” 28. What is the usual assumption about social networking sites? A. They provide good study platforms. B. They contain totally fake information. C. They couldn’t show one’s real nature. D. They are friendly to various personalities. 29. Which showed no connection between personality tests online and off? A. Openness to new experience. B. Extroversion. C. Sense of responsibility. D. Emotional stability. 30. Why do Facebook users stay true to themselves online? A. True personality beautifies image. B. The site is a medium for social life. C. Only cheats invest in a false identity. D. Various interests can be shared there. 31. What’s the purpose of the text? A. To introduce a finding. B. To offer a recommendation. C. To defend a viewpoint. D. To present a phenomenon. D Vehicles on our roads are now mostly petrol and diesel (柴油) cars, but their days cannot continue for much longer. A recent university study found that current electric cars could be used for 87 percent of daily car journeys in the US. That figure could rise to 98 percent by 2020. One hurdle to the widespread adoption of electric cars has been “range anxiety” — drivers’ concerns about running out of electricity on a journey. While petrol stations are conveniently located across national road systems, the necessary network of electric charging stations is still being developed. That said, charging points are becoming increasingly common throughout the USA. Attitudes towards electric vehicles have changed greatly over the last few years. Not that long ago, electric cars were met with distrust, and their high prices drove customers away. Thanks to improvements in battery capacity, recharging times, performance and price, the current generation of electric cars are starting to persuade picky consumers. Plug-in cars will soon give internal combustion engine (内燃机) models a run for their money. As well as development on the road, electric vehicles are taking to the seas and skies. Electric boats are among the oldest methods of electric travel, having enjoyed several decades of popularity from the late 19th to the early 20th century before petrol-powered outboard motors took over. Now, the global drive for renewable energy sources is bringing electric boats back. Steps towards electric air travel are also being made, with Airbus and NASA among the organizations developing and testing battery-powered planes. The experiments could soon make commercial electric flight a reality. Electric vehicles do not produce any emissions (排放). If the US could replace 87 percent of its cars with electric vehicles, it would reduce the national demand for petrol by 61 percent. However, because of the production processes and the generation of electricity required to charge these vehicles, they cannot claim to be completely emission-free. That said, as many countries continue to increase their use of renewable energy sources, electric vehicles will become even cleaner. 32. What does the underlined word “hurdle” probably mean in Paragraph 2? A. Obstacle. B. Intention. C. Worry. D. Stage. 33. What will the future of plug-in cars be like? A. They will suffer disbelief because of battery capacity. B. The high price will put the future of electric cars at risk. C. They will not be widely promoted because of picky customers. D. They will compete with petrol and diesel cars fiercely for markets. 34. What can we learn about in Paragraph 4? A. The history of electric travel. B. Different ways electric vehicles can be used. C. Reasons why the world needs more electric cars. D. The trend that more people have interest in electric cars. 35. What is a suitable title for the text? A. Potentials of Petrol and Diesel Cars B. Challenges Facing Electric Cars C. A Cleaner Future on the Road D. Best Means of Transportation Thrillers and romance and mystery, oh my! ___36___ And as someone with a massive to-be-read lineup, I sometimes wish I could flip the pages with a little more speed. Before you kick off the speed-reading adventure, give the text a quick scan. ___37___ By giving your brain a pre view of the topic, you reduce time spent processing surprise information. Subvocalizing is the act of silently saying words in your head as you read. It means you are taking the time to read each word and “hear” it in your head. Subvocalizing is a handy way to ensure you understand what you read, but it’s also a habit that can slow you down. ___38___ Mentally voicing the words you read can be a major roadblock to speed. And reading nonfiction health books can help you pick up medical vocabulary terms you might not see otherwise. And remember: Becoming a speed reader is like learning to salsa dance. B 19. B 20. Italian artist Jacopo Della Ragione’s works on display in Beijing have attracted many visitors. Jacopo was born in Forence in 1976, the art capital of Italy. Jacopo showed a strong interest in art in his childhood. While studying at the University of Milan, Jacopo took a master’s course in graphic design and printing technology. Before coming to China, Jacopo knew almost nothing about it. With a strong curiosity about this country, Jacopo moved to Beijing in 2001. “I planned to spend two weeks knowing about China ,but later I found the time was far from enough, and I’ve been here for more than 20 years until now,” Jacopo said. He created some paintings with traditional colors to show his love for traditional Chinese culture. The happiest time for Jacopo was after enjoying his artworks, some visitors who didn’t understand art began to show interest in it and realized art is part of their life. Having lived in China for more than two decades, Jacopo said he was amazed by the country’s rapid development. Now, he has put down roots in Beijing. “China and Italy have something in common — we both value family. I was born in Italy and live in China. China is now my home and I will continue to live and work here,” he said. A · Do an anonymous (匿名的) act of kindness for someone. · Leave a smile card behind to encourage them to pay-it-forward. · Share your story here to spread the inspiration. · hanged the world, one kind act at a time. The idea is to do something kind for someone and then leave the Smile Card behind 根据文章中的“Please tell us what inspired you to order Smile Cards, and give us an example of a kind act you'd like to do using them.(请告诉我们是什么激发了你订购微笑卡片,并给我们一个你想用它们做的善良行为的例子)”可知,要申请微笑卡片,需要告诉你想为别人做什么。 根据Note中的“so that they know someone reached out to them, and that they are invited to pay-forward the kindness and keep the rippled going!(这样他们就知道有人向他们伸出了援手,他们也被邀请来传递这种善良,让这种行为继续下去!)” A。 B We’ve all heard the stories of an actor’s struggles before a career breakthrough: living a hard life, working part time, being a couch potato before getting that major role. 25. What finally helped Baby Girl get the big role in the film? Shelby’s Hard-luck Story 【答案】24. B 25. C 26. D 27. We’ve all heard the stories of an actor’s struggles before a career breakthrough: living a hard life, working part time, being a couch potato before getting that major role. Shelby, the star of “A Dog’s Way Home,” has a hard-luck tale that could top them all. Before her big break, she was living in a landfill, rooting through garbage for her next meal. One day, Miller spotted Baby Girl’s adoption photo. “Honestly, it was a really good picture, and she was flat-out smiling,” Miller said. Then she met Baby Girl, and assessed her on personality and the ability to respond to simple commands. “She’s exactly the same,”谢尔比从垃圾场一路走来。 From a Landfill Puppy to a Movie Star.(从垃圾小狗到电影明星)为最佳标题。故选B。 C Personality used to be a one-per-customer deal: like it or not, you were who you were, and lying to a pen pal was about the closest you could get to have a different ego. C 29. D 30. B 31. 根据文章第二段“In a recent study of 133 undergraduates with Facebook profiles, University of Texas psychologist Samuel D. Gosling measured the correlation between personality tests online and off, and found — contrary to the assumption that social networking sites can’t capture one’s features—that the students represented themselves quite faithfully.(得克萨斯大学的心理学家Samuel D. Goslin最近对133名拥有Facebook资料的本科生进行了一项研究,他测量了线上和线下人格测试的关系,并发现,与社交无法捕捉一个人的特征的假设相反,学生们如实地表现了自己。)” 根据文章第三段“Gosling found a correlation between assessments in four of the five categories, with emotional stability as the only one showing no significant results across personal and online assessments.( Gosling发现,五个类别中,有四个类别的评估之间存在相关性,情绪稳定性是唯一一个在个人与在线评估中没有显著结果的类别。)” 根据文章最后一段“In short, says Gosling, Facebook users aren’t generally using the site as an image buffer, a resume enhancer, or a separate self. “They just use it as a medium for social life.”(简而言之,Facebook的用户通常不会将该网站用作形象缓冲,简历的提升或者是独立的自我。“他们只是把它作为社交生活的媒介”。)”可知,Facebook的用户只是将网络作为社交生活的媒介,因此他们在网上保持自我,故选B。 【31题详解】 推理判断题。根据文章第一段末“And that has psychologists wonder: just how well do these online personalities match the person sitting at the keyboard?(这让心理学家们想知道:这些在线的个性与坐在键盘胖的人到底匹配得多好?)” A。 D Vehicles on our roads are now mostly petrol and diesel (柴油) cars, but their days cannot continue for much longer. Best Means of Transportation 【答案】32. A 33. D 34. B 35. 根据划线词所在句“One hurdle to the widespread adoption of electric cars has been ‘range anxiety’—drivers’ concerns about running out of juice on a journey.(电动汽车被广泛采用的一个hurdle是‘里程焦虑’——驾驶者担心在旅途中电量耗尽)”可知,“驾驶员担心在旅途中耗尽电能”是电动汽车的缺点,这是电动汽车普及的一个“障碍,难关”。 故选A项。 根据第三段中的“Plug-in cars will soon give internal combustion engine (内燃机) models a run for their money.(插电式汽车将很快与内燃机汽车一较高下)”可知,插电式汽车即将具备与内燃机汽车争夺市场的能力。 根据第四段中的“As well as development on the road, electric vehicles are taking to the seas and skies. Electric boats are among the oldest methods of electric travel, having enjoyed several decades of popularity from the late 19th to the early 20th century before petrol-powered outboard motors took over. Now, the global drive for renewable energy sources is bringing electric boats back. Steps towards electric air travel are also being made, with Airbus and NASA among the organizations developing and testing battery-powered planes.(除了在陆路上的发展,电动汽车正在走向海洋和天空。 根据第一段“Vehicles on our roads are now mostly petrol and diesel (柴油) cars, but their days cannot continue for much longer. If you’re also wondering how to read faster, you’re in luck. Here are some tips for how to read faster. Scan the text first. Before you kick off the speed-reading adventure, give the text a quick scan. ___37___ By giving your brain a pre view of the topic, you reduce time spent processing surprise information. This tip mainly applies to academic texts, but it can be a helpful strategy for any factual or how-to piece, from nonfiction books to news articles. Silence your inner subvocalizer. Instead of silently mouthing each word, train your brain to process chunks of words. ___39___ Have you ever been deeply immersed in a story only to stop short at a word you don’t recognize? The stronger your vocabulary, the slimmer your chances of slowing down to puzzle over the meaning of a word. ___40___Reading news articles from the economics section can help you learn new financial terms. And reading nonfiction health books can help you pick up medical vocabulary terms you might not see otherwise. And remember: Becoming a speed reader is like learning to salsa dance. Start slow, find your rhythm, and soon you’ll be breezing through pages like a literary Zorro! A. Expand your vocabulary. B. A larger vocabulary really counts. C. Try to put your inner voice on vacation. D. Reading outside your usual categories and topics helps. E. There are almost too many great books to read in a lifetime. F. Fast reading helps you complete your booklist more efficiently. G. Look for titles, subtitles, and any visual cue that offers a roadmap. E 37. G 38. C 39. A 40. 【36题详解】 根据后文“And as someone with a massive to-be-read lineup, I sometimes wish I could flip the pages with a little more speed.(作为一个有大量待读书目的人,我有时希望我能更快地翻页。)”和前文“Thrillers and romance and mystery, oh my!(惊悚、浪漫和神秘,天哪!)” 【37题详解】 根据前文“Before you kick off the speed-reading adventure, give the text a quick scan.(在你开始快速阅读之前,先快速浏览一下文章。)”和后文“By giving your brain a pre view of the topic, you reduce time spent processing surprise information.(通过给你的大脑一个主题的预览,你减少了处理意外信息的时间。)” 【38题详解】 根据后文“Mentally voicing the words you read can be a major roadblock to speed. Instead of silently mouthing each word, train your brain to process chunks of words.(在脑海中读出你所读的单词可能是提高阅读速度的主要障碍。不要默念每个单词,训练你的大脑处理大块的单词。)”可知,此处是指在心里默读,所以选项C“试着让你内心的声音去度假。”切合文意。故选C。 【39题详解】 根据后文“Have you ever been deeply immersed in a story only to stop short at a word you don’t recognize? The stronger your vocabulary, the slimmer your chances of slowing down to puzzle over the meaning of a word.(你是否曾经深深沉浸在一个故事中,却突然停在一个你不认识的单词上?你的词汇量越大,你就越不可能放慢速度去理解一个单词的意思。)”可知,此处是指要扩大自己的词汇量,所以选项A“扩大词汇量。”切合文意。故选A。 【40题详解】 根据后文“Reading news articles from the economics section can help you learn new financial terms.
