How can kids become heroes? Do they have to save the world? No. To become a hero, kids just have to think about what others need and find a way to help. Katie Stagliano is one of those hero kids.
Katie loved to garden. When she was 9, she harvested a huge cabbage which weighed 40 pounds. The cabbage was far bigger than what her family needed, so she thought about what to do with it.
She knew that there were lots of hungry people in South California, where she lived. So she decided to donate her enormous cabbage to a soup kitchen. It turned out that her kind donation helped feed more than 275 people.
Then Katie thought about other gardeners who had more vegetables than they could eat. Suddenly, she saw a way to solve both problems. Katie realized that she could help fight against hunger by encouraging kids to plant vegetable gardens and donate their harvest to hungry people. That’s how Katie’s Krops was born.
Katie says, “My dream is that there are no hungry people.” To make that dream come true, Katie got her whole school involved. The students planted a huge garden, but Katie knew she could do more. She contacted an organization called Fields to Families, which sent a master gardener to help.
“It’s so great to help people,” Katie adds, but kids don’t have to grow huge cabbages. If they could grow “even one vegetable plant and donate the harvest to a local soup kitchen, we could make a huge difference in the fight against hunger”.
It’s been several years since Katie Stagliano started work on her dream. Today, more than 60 gardens around the United States are being grown by kids. Young gardeners have donated tens of thousands of pounds of fresh vegetables to stop hunger.
Sadly, many people are still hungry. However, Katie’s Krops and hundreds of child gardeners are planting and harvesting to change that.

Five years ago, when Zhu Qing was 28, he paid a visit to Africa. While there he discovered the beauty of the land as well as the difficulties the local youth were facing—educational, economic(经济的) and environmental problems.
As a global affairs(国际事务) and international peace studies major, Zhu did field research at more than 10 non-governmental organizations (NGOs), national forest parks, governments and companies in six African countries including Kenya, Uganda and South Africa. He then decided to help solve these real-world problems by setting up a consulting firm(咨询公司) called Pumbaa Eco.
“Whether it is a government, an NGO or an individual(个人), they cannot solve all the social problems on their own. Many gaps can be filled by business power, in an efficient(高效的) way.” said Zhu.
Pumbaa Eco started plenty of projects to empower young African people and encourage cultural exchange.
The Africa True Story is a project that aims to draw the public’s eye to Africa and help African content creators. More than 100 young journalists (记者), environmentalists, scholars and business workers in Africa have taken part in it.
They have written articles and research reports and made videos about their lives or related social issues. Some of their works were posted on platforms like Toutiao, Wechat, The Paper and the IFeng website. Some works were sold to companies so these young people can make money as well as express themselves.
Pumbaa Eco has also worked with African Wildlife Foundation to hold wildlife protection forums(论坛), and organized dance and music classes as well as soccer competitions for kids in slum areas(贫民区). Now they are working to build an international volunteer center in Nairobi, the capital of Kenya.
“The center will open this spring. It will be a space for youth from across the world to communicate and a platform for sharing all kinds of projects.” explained Zhu. “More young Chinese people can connect to Africa more easily, too, whether through ecological(生态的) research trips, ecotourism(生态旅游) or volunteering experience.”
“I myself have achieved a sense of self-fulfillment(自我实现) through my work. I hope my work can help more young people, from both China and Africa, to live their lives to the fullest.” Zhu added.

① attracting the talented African people to work in China
② organizing classes and competitions for some poor kids
③ selling their works on different platforms to make money
④ starting some projects to support African content creators
A.①② B.③④ C.①③ D.②④
24.What do we know about the international volunteer center in Nairobi?

C.Zhu Qing has finished his work for helping the youth.
D.Zhu Qing will explore more fields to increase business.

Kids who took part in community service were 34% more likely to be in good physical health than those who didn’t, the study found. And those who volunteered were 66% more likely to be considered doing well in general. Kids aged 12 and older who volunteered were 25% less likely to have anxiety (焦虑) than those who didn’t. The findings come from survey data (数据) provided by the parents of 50,000 kids in the United States ages 6 to 17. 27
Studies like this have limitations (局限性). Parents answered questions about their kids’ health and community service activities. But a parent might not know if their children experience anxiety or consider themselves to be healthy. 28 It can only uncover connections. So it’s impossible to say for sure that volunteering leads to better mental and physical health.
29 In recent years, more and more young people are suffering from anxiety. So there’s a clear need for convenient and useful mental health resources. Giving back to the community may be one such resource. Previous research has also found connections between volunteering and well - being among adults. Serving the community seems to help people feel a sense of purpose. 30 Generosity has also been shown to boost happiness and improve physical health. It might be a practice worth developing.
A.This type of data also can’t prove cause and effect.
B.Most of the kids showed great interest in the survey.
C.And it makes them feel connected to those around them.
D.But the data comes at an important time for youth mental health.
E.About half of those parents reported that their kids did volunteer work.
F.That’s according to a new research published in JAMA Network Open, in May.
G.Volunteering means developing new skills, sharing love, and making new friends.

A.This type of data also can’t prove cause and effect.
B.Most of the kids showed great interest in the survey.
C.And it makes them feel connected to those around them.
D.But the data comes at an important time for youth mental health.
